SIGN UP HERE! (Go on… we're both waiting for you to do it… don't be a Wensleydale waffler!) And now, to this week's episode... Time for a cracking chat? We think so. Our special guest is the brilliant BEN WHITEHEAD – the talented actor and voice artist best known as the voice of Wallace in the beloved Wallace and Gromit films. Ben is a leading figure in the world of voice acting, having taken over the iconic role from Peter Sallis, with whom he worked closely before stepping into Wallace's well-loved shoes (and possibly slippers). His work continues to bring joy to audiences around the world through the timeless charm and humour of Aardman's creations. In this conversation, we talk to Ben about how he got started in voice work, what it was like working alongside Peter Sallis, and the unique process behind bringing animated characters to life. We also chat about the importance of seizing opportunities when they arise, his advice for aspiring voice actors—and, of course, that unforgettable trip to the Oscars. There's something delightfully British about this episode—it's equal parts heartwarming, hilarious, and just the right amount of bonkers. Feature: Wallace & Gromit return to the big screen with ‘Vengeance Most Fowl,’ we talk to the directors It’s been 19 years since the intuitive, Wensleydale-loving Wallace and Gromit graced the big screen, with their last feature being The Curse of the Wererabbit; now the duo returns with Vengeance Most Fowl, which also marks the return of an old foe, the silent penguin Feathers McGraw. Having begun as a graduation project at the National Film and Television School, and now being a three-time Academy Award-winning cast of characters, Wallace & Gromit creator Nick Park has teamed up with longtime collaborator Merlin Crossingham to direct this latest feature. So for this week’s FilmWeek feature, Larry sits down with Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl directors Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham to discuss all the work that went into making this stop-motion animated feature a reality. Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl will be released in select theaters on December 18 and streaming on Netflix on January 3.

Send us a textEpisode 159So, I've just come back from the UK, right? Honestly, I've eaten so much cheese, I'm practically sweating cheddar. I'm talking the full Monty – Brie, Stilton, Red Leicester – the whole cheese board. It's like I went on a one-man mission to prop up the British dairy industry. You know it's bad when you have a full English breakfast, and you're sprinkling cheese on your bacon. I was that guy.And let me tell you, when you're not used to it, your stomach goes, "Nah, love, we don't do this anymore." I'm in Japan, right? Lovely country, great food, but they're mostly lactose intolerant. This means I'm safe from the dairy demons. You know, the moment I touched down in the UK, it was like my body went, "Well, there's no lactose intolerance here, is there? Fill your boots!" Before I knew it, I was ordering triple-cheese pizzas like they were going out of fashion.By the end of it, I was having cheese dreams – and not the good ones where you're floating on a cloud of mozzarella. No, it was like I was being chased by a giant wheel of Wensleydale down a hill, with no escape. It was a cheesy nightmare. But could I stop? No chance! Cheese became my best mate, and I was like, "Just one more slice, come on." Like a junkie, but with cheese.Anyway, I get back to Japan – and I'm lugging around an extra two kilos of pure cheese weight. I swear to God, if the cheese had any more power over me, I'd have to apply for dual citizenship. The thing is, the Japanese are mostly lactose intolerant – God bless 'em – and thank God for it because if I lived in a country that embraced dairy the way the UK does, I'd be banging on even more than the two kilos I already did. I'd have a dedicated cheese fridge, a fondue fountain in the kitchen, and be mainlining cheddar in the mornings. But here, in Japan, it's all rice and fish. Proper food, innit? I've never been so happy to see a plate of sushi in my life. It's like my stomach took a bow and went, “Finally! Some bloody relief!” Honestly, my body feels like it's been through a traumatic experience – a cheese-induced hostage situation, and it's only just come out the other side. And then – wait for it – my old employer here in Japan gets in touch. “Fancy coming back to work?” Coming back?! Mate, you had me stuck in endless meetings with nothing but vending machine coffee and "ganbatte" pep talks. No, ta, pal! The last time I worked there, I nearly lost my mind from the company-wide emails about whose bento smelled like fermented nightmares. I'm not going back to a place where the daily excitement is a new brand of instant ramen in the breakroom. No way, mate, I've just survived the cheese apocalypse; I'm not signing up for round two in the land of never-ending overtime. So here I am, two kilos heavier, recovering from a dairy binge, and politely telling my old boss in Japan to jog on. Japan, thank you for your lactose intolerance. You've saved me from a life of cheese addiction and workplace purgatory.Music: Kulashaker -HushJames - Getting Away wit ItSupport the showInsta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.comArtwork @digitalnomadicart on Insta

Today, we have an interesting story about a Christmas-themed burger that has caused quite a stir. The Butcher's Tap and Grill in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, has introduced a unique burger that combines the flavors of turkey, chicken, and duck. Topped with gravy and cheese, this burger has sparked controversy not only because of its price but also because of the unconventional brown sauce that accompanies it. --- **The Festive 3 Bird Burger** The chef behind this burger is Tom Carriage, a renowned culinary expert with a Michelin star. On his Instagram, he announced the arrival of the "festive 3 Bird Burger." This burger consists of a delicious patty made from chicken, turkey, and duck. It is then wrapped in bacon, topped with Wensleydale cheese, honey roasted parsnip, cream sprouts, and brown sauce. Served with a jug of gravy, it promises to be a real treat for food enthusiasts. However, not everyone is thrilled about the combination of parsnips and Brussels sprouts inside the burger, while others believe that the gravy might make it messy to eat. -- **Kinder: The Baby Naming App** In other news, if you're struggling to find the perfect name for your baby, there's an app that can help. Jessica, a mom-to-be, discovered an app called Kinder, which works similarly to Tinder. Users swipe left on names they don't like and right on names they do. When both partners swipe right on the same name, it's a match. Jessica used this app and eventually chose the name Daisy for her daughter. She believes it will be a great story to tell Daisy when she is older, and recommends the app to anyone in search of unique baby names. **White Rhinos Rewilded in Africa** For those concerned about wildlife conservation, here's some good news. A non-profit organization called African Parks, along with support from the South African government, is undertaking a project to rewild white rhinos across Africa. These rhinos, previously bred in captivity due to financial challenges, will be released back into the wild over the next 10 years. This initiative aims to contribute to biodiversity and ecosystem health, combatting the threats of biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse. **Socks for Seniors** Ellie, a high school junior, has taken it upon herself to bring joy to senior citizens this holiday season. Through her project called "Socks for Seniors," she sends silly and colorful socks to nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Ellie's goal is to brighten the lives of senior citizens and bring some fun and color to their feet. Over the past four years, she has sent socks to 92 facilities across 48 states. Her initiative is a heartwarming example of how small acts of kindness can make a big difference**CosMc's: McDonald's Spinoff Chain** Lastly, for those who enjoy unique culinary experiences, McDonald's has launched a spinoff chain offering specialty beverages, coffees, and a variety of new food options. Our podcast guests today are Jeri Robinson Lawrence and daughter Irina Lawrence Matthais.  This hardworking mother/daughter team has contributed a few soundbites in between Points A, B, C and X in the rush of the New York State Sheep and Wool Festival every year, but as they're the ones that everyone needs something from at all times, a relaxed moment has been hard to come by with these two.So we went to the mountain (so to speak, although it's southern Pennsylvania just west of the Susquehanna River, so there were a few hills in there).  They have plenty of things available on their website for anyone who might want some delicious shades, colors, and types of fiber, but the physical location of the farm and shop known as Flying Fibers is a place for the senses.  Sheep (mostly Shetlands, with a few Leicester and Wensleydale in the mix), chickens, dogs, cats, toddlers, and what seems like every other creature in Noah's Ark are napping, creating, munching, gamboling or just sitting picturesquely on this little homestead, with green pastures surrounded by waving wheat and banks of bee-covered lavender.  We don't know how they trained all the critters to perform so beautifully for the cameras (but not the husband, I'm afraid – he ran when we pushed “record”), but the visuals were absolutely lovely.  The scents were fantastic too -- lavender AND lanolin included. Our Shetland mascot, Jane, could not have a better home with better people.  And the world is a better place because of pretty much everything connected with this little spot of heaven.Links:https://www.flyingfibers.com/https://www.shetland-sheep.org/https://sheepandwool.com/Support the show

I'm on the foot of the second sock. I have a skein of Gay Pride Flag from Weird Sisters Wool Emporium waiting to be cast on for my next pair of socks (for a gift). I finished spinning the Cormo x Merino x Wensleydale fleece. I have about 1500 yards of a 3-ply that is about fingering weight. The staple length gives the yarn a nice sheen but it is soft enough that most people could probably wear it in a pullover. This is a Black Sheep Gathering fleece from 2016. I still have another box of this for another project. I'm now spinning the Corriedale x Targhee x Merino fleece where I dyed the wool and then carded. The batts are a nice heathered blue/purple and I'm spinning woolen. I have 9 ounces of the purple carded batts to spin. This is a Black Sheep Gathering fleece from 2017. I still have about 2 lbs of this fleece left and I was losing about 10% in the carding process on this fleece.  I am also working on processing a Corriedale x Border Leicester from 2016. This fleece has nice long locks so I am doing the same as with the black fleece. I am flicking the locks before I feed them into the drum carder, trying to keep the fibers as aligned as possible (as is done in combing). With this fleece I'm pulling the batts off the carder through a diz and making nests of pseudo-combed top. This process has resulted in about 20% loss.  I think I'd like to finish processing the whole bag (about 36 ounces). I've processed about 8 ounces in the first batch and ended up with 6.25 ounces of nests.  I will probably use this for rug yarn.  Pop Up Giveaway:  Valley Oak Wool Mill: California Red Roving 8oz Targee/Alpaca Roving 8oz  Debouillet Roving 2 oz Shetland Roving 4 oz Events Summer Spin In: Memorial Day - Labor Day, May 29 - September 4 Monterey Wool Show Fleece Judging–August 12 at Monterey County Fairgrounds SF Pen Show August 25-27 in Millbrae  Monterey County Wool Auction–September 4 at Monterey County Fairgrounds Lambtown October 7-8 in Dixon

“Please work with us!” That's the message to the Government this morning from labour providers who say there are severe staff shortages in food and farming and 60 per cent of farmers and manufacturers expect they won't have enough workers next year. Tis the season for an announcement on seasonal worker visas - last year it came on Christmas Eve, heralding 40,000 6-month visas for people coming from abroad to work on UK farms and in poultry processing this year. We understand the exact numbers for NEXT year are currently being discussed by the Home Office and DEFRA. The National Farmers Union have called for 55 thousand visas - but the Immigration Minister, Robert Jenrick, recently told the House of Commons that he felt 40,000 a year “is approximately the right number” and pointed out that this year there were 1,400 visas left unused. Our week long travel through the world of cheese culminates in a trip to the Yorkshire dales where it's believed versions of Wensleydale were first made a thousand years ago. Farmhouse production came to an end after the second world war but it's making a come-back and bringing benefits to smaller farm businesses. And the UK needs to reduce its reliance on ‘risky import markets' for phosphorous and instead develop innovative ways of recovering it from animal manures and wastewater. That's the advice in the UK Phosphorous Transformation Strategy, which has just been released. Phosphorus is needed for biological processes in plants and animals. At the moment the UK imports 174,000 tons a year - mainly from Russia, China and Morocco - and prices have been impacted by the war in Ukraine. I've started the armhole shaping.  Spinning: I'm still spinning the Manx Loaghton. I have spun 768 yards, or 15.2 ounces, of a 2 pound bag of roving. No work on this since the last episode. Started spinning the two 8 ounce braids I bought at Black Sheep Gathering. A corriedale cross and 70/30 merino/silk. I have finished three skeins (two ply of each single) and have about 753 yards/7.1 ounces.  Here is a link to the listing for my mother's 1968 Ford that we said goodbye to.  Kelly's Projects: Currently spinning and plying yarn from a black Shetland. So far I have about 430 yards and 190 grams. But they aren't washed yet so the weight will probably go down a bit. I have another bobbin of yarn done and I'm about half finished with the carded batts.  I've also started carding the Wensleydale X Cormo that was already washed and waiting to be processed. I'm about halfway through the carding and I have about 9 large batts. On average the fiber is about 4 inches long and very fine. It isn't carding up like a long wool at all. The staple length is longer than the Shetland, but the batts are super dense and puffy like a cormo or a merino would be. I'm looking forward to spinning it.  CVM Hats, one is finished, one is on the needles. Future project: Wensleydale x Lincoln fleece from 2003 into a lock woven rugs for the dogs for camping or for their pillows inside. Adventures Kelly went on a camping trip to Dumbarton Quarry campground in Fremont, CA. The campground opened in August of 2021 and has an interesting history. “Tuibun Ohlone Indians inhabited a nearby village for 2,000 years before the arrival of Europeans. Their descendants preserve Ohlone culture with programs and special events at adjacent Coyote Hills Regional Park. Subsequent land use has included ranching and farming.  Dumbarton Quarry was in operation from the 1950s through 2007. Quarrying changed a 190-foot hill into a pit 22 acres across and 320 feet below sea level at the deepest point, making it the lowest human-made elevation in North America. The quarry took 12 years to fill using six million cubic yards of dirt from major construction projects in the Bay Area, including the Bart extension to San Jose. The top 50 feet of dirt was then compacted with a 10-ton weight suspended from a crane.” Summer Spin-In  Started June 1 and goes until September 5. Bad Dads Film Review

Play Episode Listen Later May 6, 2022 88:19

When it comes to onscreen violence there's nothing quite like a beheading to get the blood pumping. Whether it be in service of the story or the audiences blood lust, screenwriters have chosen time after time to lop off a character's head, so this week sees us discussing the Top 5 Decapitations. Perhaps we missed one out, if so head on over to Twitter or any one of our channels to let us know. BABY DRIVER (2017) is Edgar Wright's thrilling heist caper, set to a propulsive soundtrack which weaves its way through every beat of the movie, almost like a trailer but for 2 hours and nowhere near as awful as that implies. Baby is coerced into working as a getaway driver for crime boss Doc but as his final job looms, life becomes more complicated when a crew of dangerous criminals becomes entangled in his newly found romance with waiter Debora. Jamie Foxx provides genuine menace as the psychotic Bats whilst Jon Hamm's Buddy is a more nuanced villain, striking a paternal role with the tinnitus and trauma suffering Baby. Lily James is fine as the love interest, so too is Eiza Gonzalez as enthusiastic but meaningless character Darling which just leaves the remaining cast to talk about: Ansel Elgort and Kevin Spacey which is all a bit problematic to be honest, with both men being accused and investigated of sexual crimes. Actually, what we should talk about is the movie, which is an inventive and thrilling genre film musical, not a combination you see every day. DP Bill Pope ensures the whole thing looks incredible and the movie is witty and impeccably edited. Maybe the final act doesn't quite match the pure fun of the build-up, but this is bravura filmmaking that comes with the approval of all of the Bad Dads, for whatever that is worth. Nothing. RASTAMOUSE is a stop-motion animated tv series which first aired on CBBC in January 2011. The series follows the adventures of the eponymous(e) rodent and his mystery solving bandmates Da Easy Crew, as they assist President Wensleydale and the orphans of Mouseland with whatever constitutes the latest emergency. This episode sees the town engulfed in a scam when legendary film director Spike Cheese turns up to shoot his latest movie but why does he need so many orphans and what is he doing with them all? Sadly of course Rastamouse was deported as part of the Windrush scandal back in 2018 so we won't hear his take on a complicated issue about race which emerges out of the existence of the show, which the Bad Dads attempt to muddle through. Does RASTAMOUSE represent a homogenisation of Black cultures and is it therefore fundamentally a bit racist? As ever we don't know so don't look to us for answers. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Try us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... Bad Dads

And that's a wrap on our 31 days of Horror Flog. Thank you to everyone who downloaded any of the episodes during October! In a year that featured a new Halloween film, it seemed appropriate to end proceedings on Michael Myers & his new housemates, Big & Little John.  Keep an eye out for our Christmas Flogmas plans!  Flogoween edition! Topics discussed during the episode include: (I may have gotten a bit carried away with this episode) Ben's Boom Arm is in its usual place but somehow in the way? Evil will die tonight!? Evil must die tonight!?  What did you think of Bobby, the ring leader? Has Fiona been Andrew this whole time? Slightly concerning. The ghosts of Big & Little John cause musical mischief. Is Fiona's ‘feedback sandwich' worthy of a new  segment? Ben finally (sort of, doesn't) gets the bottom of why Michael Myers's numerous masks upset him so much. Is it nice to see Michael Myers's sensitive side? At what point do you like or dislike a franchise? Is this really worse than Mrs Doubtfire from 4? What about Witch Myers from 5? Druid Myers from 6???????????? Ben still can't let the Jason Takes Vancouver debacle go.FilmFloggers receive their first heckler. Was I harsh on Dr Loomis's stand-in? Did the heckler do a better job? Why does Fiona have such a problem with The Boogyman? It was great to see Danny Devito reprising his role as the Penguin. Is Michael Myers supernatural or just capable of the spectacular? Was Myers crapping his overalls when the townsfolk formed that circle?Myers doesn't seem to hold much regard for all the hardworking healthcare professionals. Was hunting down The Shape with a cheese knife a wise move? Is Michael Myers a brie or Wensleydale guy? Michael Myers has come home...To a house in serious need of redecorating.Fiona doesn't like me looking at her whilst serenading her.Am I turning into Danny Devito? To celebrate the spookiest day of the year, we devised the great idea (it wasn't) of attempting to release 31 horror-themed films for every day in October! Located in a small town in New England, Wing & A Prayer Farm began as an idea sparked during a trip to England in 2000. Inspired by the many sheep farms dotting the countryside, Tammy and her children decided to start their own sheep farm with a few Shetland rescues. It is now a flourishing farm with a variety of animals and avenues of business.  It is home to Clun Forest, Poll Dorset, Colored Merino, Cotswold, Wensleydale, Teeswater, and Cormo sheep. It is also home to Vermont's first Valais Blacknose Sheep. Currently, the farm sells fiber for yarn, which is derived from registered Shetland, Cormo, Cotswold, and Merino sheep, registered Angora goats, and alpacas. Along with the fiber, Wing & A Prayer sells fresh eggs, chickens, turkeys, honey, homemade soap and homemade pies! It must be noted, Farmer Tam is more than a fiber farmer. She also has a passion for the making arts--creating unique wood products, naturally hand dyed fiber products and home baked goods on her farm. Her passion as a teacher has also led her to run classes teaching fiber farming and sheep rearing. In this week's episode, we will discuss Tammy's journey building a successful business and the hilarious stories of the animals living on her farm. Fell running is one of the oldest and most traditional sports in northern England.   Races take place across the Yorkshire Dales throughout spring and summer.  In this podcast you are taken to the ‘Hawkswick Dash' in Littondale in June 2021, organised by the British Open Fell Runners Association.  Hear the voices of Skipton's ‘Mr Sport' Roger Ingham, ‘Run The Dales' writer and organiser Victoria Benn, Kilnsey Show fell race record holder Mick Hawkins and Wensleydale fell runners Heather Hodgson and Brian Carlisle.    The cover photo is by Stephen Garnett Photography.  As Stephen has said, the image, taken at the Hawkswick Dash, “captures the lung busting rawness of fell running”.

Voices From The Dales

John Thwaite (1873-1941) was a Wensleydale dialect poet who wrote about the natural beauty as well as the ordinary working class people around him.  He worked as a grocer in the town of Hawes.  Some 30 years after his death a group of people in Wensleydale recorded his poems on cassette tapes.  In this episode hear two poems read by Jack Fawcett:  ‘The Quarryman's Cross' and ‘T'Auction Mart'.   It is presented by Andrew Fagg from Hawes Main Street and was recorded on 6 March 2021.

Voices From The Dales

“The energy is no longer there,” said the Methodist minister in Reeth in 2016, as another Dales chapel closed.  As journalist Mike Amos reported, a way of life was quietly disappearing. Chapels were at the heart of village life in Wensleydale and Swaledale for around 150 years, but decline set in during the second half of the last century.  And yet in half a dozen places such as Gayle and Gunnerside the Methodists are ‘still alive', as they like to say.  In this episode hear Walden preacher Rowland Dent, as well as Jean Cockburn from Aysgarth, Joan Fawcett from Hawes and the late Richard Dinsdale of Gayle.  It is presented by Andrew Fagg from outside West Burton Methodist Church and was recorded on 4 March 2021.
