American neurologist Walter Jackson Freeman had refined Moniz's procedure and developed a non-surgical procedure that could be performed in a doctor's office, which he called a transorbital lobotomy. Freeman's procedure involved inserting a medical instrument similar to an icepick into the patient's orbital socket to sever the neural connections, without requiring surgery, hospital stays, and long recovery times. Touted as a quick, easy, and painless solution to everything from general malaise and occasional depression to schizophrenia and aggressive behavior, the procedure a go-to solution for the very complex psychological problems that have affected countless people for centuries. Unfortunately, while the procedure was effective for a small number of those who received a lobotomy, it was used indiscriminately, often without consideration for the increasingly disastrous outcomes.Today we talk about the tragic and disastrous lobotomy on Rosemary Kennedy and thousands more that occured after it. Dr. Richard Restak concurs with the 18th century British writer, Samuel Johnson, who once said, “The true art of memory is the art of attention.”A neurologist and neuropsychologist and expert on the human brain, Dr. Restak believes that all methods of nourishing and protecting one's memory entail the ability to focus attention. His favorite technique is turning words into visual images to establish what he calls a “memory path.”“Seeing something and converting the word or a sense into a picture, into a mental drawing, is the key to setting up memory,” he explains.Dr. Restak also advocates other paths for protecting one's memory - cooking (which can require organization and memorization of recipes), the use of technology (to support memory, not replace it), getting adequate sleep, playing games, avoiding fast food and trending toward vegetarianism, and exercising. Guest Bio:Dr. Richard Restak is a noted neurologist and neuropsychiatrist who has written extensively on the subject of the human brain. He is the author of 20 books, all on aspects of the brain, two of which were New York Times Best Sellers - The Brain (1984) and The Mind (1988). Both those books were turned into television series by the Public Broadcasting System. His most recent book, The Complete Guide to Memory: The Science of Strengthening Your Mind, published in 2021, is a cornucopia of information on memory and offers numerous suggestions for how individuals can enhance their memory and protect it from deteriorating.Dr. Restak earned degrees from Gettysburg College and Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed his internship at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City and residencies at Georgetown University Hospital and George Washington University Hospital. Now 80, he still has a private practice in  neurology and neuropsychology and is a clinical professor of neurology at George Washington Hospital University School of Medicine and Health.Often appearing as a guest on television and radio shows, Dr. Restak has written articles for numerous newspapers and contributed entries on neuroscience and the brain to the Encyclopedia Brittanica and the Encyclopedia of Neuroscience. PICKING UP THE PACE|Jay Rogers, founder and CEO of haddy- a 3D -printed furniture company,  joins host Gregg Garrett to discuss the lessons he learned by 3D printing autonomous vehicles and how the team is now looking to disrupt the complete supply chain of a less regulated industry with a similar product set. Of course, Jay speaks about his Top 3: God, who is part of his life everyday, his boys who help him to learn and reverse mentor him, and 3-star General Mike Dana who specializes in servant leadership. And you have to hear what he has to say about reading by candlelight. ABOUT JAY ROGERS John “Jay” Rogers is CEO and Co-Founder of haddy inc. – a pioneering digital manufacturing company serving the furniture industry and built on revolutionary technology and IP. Haddy is changing the way furniture is designed, built, delivered, and recycled. It is the world's first micro-manufacturer of furniture produced through a proprietary method of direct digital manufacturing (“DDM”). Through DDM, haddy enables more rapid technology and material adoption and a superior resilient supply chain.   Jay grew up a lover of woodworking, machines, and a student of industry; his grandfather owned the legendary Indian Motorcycle Company, founded concrete and steel giant Texas Industries, and was the first Cummins Engine Distributor in the United States. Jay's grandfather is also credited with saving the Public Broadcasting System during the Nixon Administration and founding the Children's Television Workshop, which is best known for Sesame Street. In combining his family legacy of manufacturing, his military leadership, entrepreneurship, and education, Jay has hand selected a team of co-founders and set forth on a most ambitious plan: Creating, heroic, beautiful, durable furniture for retailers, to their design, built locally in the most resilient and sustainable manner.   He graduated from Princeton University and went to a startup in China and then to Ewing & Partners where he became a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). After that, he went on to the US Marine Corps where he served for 9 years in the infantry in the western Pacific and Iraq, to Harvard Business School and to become a consultant for McKinsey & Co. Most recently, he founded and led Local Motors, a next generation vehicle OEM. It was there that Jay discovered the basic technology of DDM, and in 2021 he handed over the reins of Local Motors to a new investor group and left to start haddy full-time. The story of how communities of customers and suppliers can effectively participate in the innovation and creation of leading technology products is a journey Jay shares widely. He has spoken at BIF, PopTech, TedX, Picnic in Amsterdam, Do Conference in Wales, St Gallen Symposium, the White House conference on making, CES, CeBIT, IMTS, Singularity University, and many more conclaves. Additionally, the story of American innovation, co-creation and digital manufacturing has been shared on Discovery, PBS, Fox, CNBC, and Speed Channel. You can find Jay's impact first in long form narrative as part of many books, starting with MacroWikinomics written by Don Tapscott and Anthony D. Williams and more recently in America's Moment: Creating Opportunity in the Connected Age by Rework America and Zoe Baird. His work has also been featured in Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, Wired, Top Gear, AutoWeek, Inc., Details, Forbes, and others. In 2020, he was awarded the honor of leading Local Motors to one of the top 10 global innovative transportation companies by Popular Science. Jay is a director of the RBR Foundation, which gives annually to the cause of childhood education and development. He is the father of 4 boys who are growing up in a connected age and whom, he hopes, will take advantage of the incredible opportunity that the internet has given the world.   Visit Jay, haddy and the future of American Manufacturing Innovation in Tampa, FL where the first haddy microfactory is being built, and where he calls headquarters and home. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the weeks of May 23 and May 30, 2022.  This episode, marking the Memorial Day holiday observed this year on May 30, repeats an episode first done in 2015. MUSIC – ~17 sec – instrumental. That tune, composed during the U.S. Civil War, sets the stage for a water-related exploration of the origin of Memorial Day.  Have a listen to the music for about 35 more seconds. MUSIC – ~35 sec – instrumental. You've been listening to a version of “All Quiet Along the Potomac Tonight,” recorded by Chloe Benner and Stewart Scales.  The tune was composed in 1863 by John Hill Hewitt.  The title, and the lyrics associated with the tune, are from “The Picket Guard,” a poem by Ethel Lynn Beers, published in 1861.  The poem relates the loneliness, homesickness, and then sudden death of a rank-and-file soldier patrolling the dark, wooded, and deceptively quiet Potomac riverbank.  As a similar tragic fate befell tens of thousands of Civil War soldiers along rivers, ridges, and battle lines in Virginia and elsewhere, surviving family and friends began honoring fallen soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers, especially during spring.  The practice grew across both North and South, eventually becoming a spring tradition known as “Decoration Day.” On May 5, 1868, Gen. John Logan called for Decoration Day to be an annual, national holiday on May 30, and the first national ceremony was held that year in Arlington National Cemetery, near the banks of the Potomac.  After World War I, the annual observance began to include honoring those who had died in all U.S. military conflicts.  In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day an official national holiday, to occur on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day invokes very personal and local expressions of honor and remembrance, true to the holiday's origin of individuals decorating Civil War graves with flowers.  In that spirit, we close this tribute to Memorial Day with about 25 seconds of “Flowers of the Forest,” by No Strings Attached, from their 2002 album, “Old Friend's Waltz.” MUSIC – ~26 sec – instrumental. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic issued General Order Number 11 designating May 30 as a memorial day ‘for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land.' “The first national celebration of the holiday took place May 30, 1868, at Arlington National Cemetery, where both Confederate and Union soldiers were buried.  Originally known as Decoration Day, at the turn of the century it was designated as Memorial Day.  In many American towns, the day is celebrated with a parade. “Southern women decorated the graves of soldiers even before the Civil War's end.  Records show that by 1865, Mississippi, Virginia, and South Carolina all had precedents for Memorial Day.  Songs in the Duke University collection Historic American Sheet Music include hymns published in the South such as these two from 1867: ‘Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping,' dedicated to ‘The Ladies of the South Who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead,' and ‘Memorial Flowers,' dedicated ‘To the Memory of Our Dead Heroes.' “When a women's memorial association in Columbus, Mississippi, decorated the graves of both Confederate and Union soldiers on April 25, 1866, this act of generosity and reconciliation prompted an editorial piece, published by Horace Greeley's New York Tribune, and a poem by Francis Miles Finch, ‘The Blue and the Grey,' published in the Atlantic Monthly.  The practice of strewing flowers on soldiers' graves soon became popular throughout the reunited nation. “President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed Waterloo, New York, as the ‘Birthplace of Memorial Day,' because it began a formal observance on May 5, 1866.  However, Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, also claims to have held the first observance, based on an observance dating back to October 1864.  Indeed, many other towns also lay claim to being the first to hold an observance. “In 1971, federal law changed the observance of the holiday to the last Monday in May and extended the honor to all soldiers who died in American wars.  A few states continue to celebrate Memorial Day on May 30. “Today, national observance of the holiday still takes place at Arlington National Cemetery with the placing of a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the decoration of each grave with a small American flag.  Protocol for flying the American flag on Memorial Day includes raising it quickly to the top of the pole at sunrise, immediately lowering it to half-staff until noon, and displaying it at full staff from noon until sunset. … “Many veterans of the Vietnam War, and relatives and friends of those who fought in that conflict, make a pilgrimage over Memorial Day weekend to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., where they pay their respects to another generation of fallen soldiers.” SOURCES USED FOR AUDIO AND OFFERING MORE INFORMATION On the History of Memorial Day Library of Congress, “Today in History—May 30/Memorial Day,” online at https://www.loc.gov/item/today-in-history/may-30/. Les Brown and his twin brother were born on the floor of an abandoned building in Liberty City, a low-income section of Miami, Florida. Their birth mother, married at the time to a soldier stationed overseas, had become pregnant by another man and went to Miami secretly to give birth and three weeks later, she gave them away. He was adopted by Mamie Brown, a 38-year-old single woman who worked as a cafeteria attendant and domestic assistant. As a child, Brown was finding it impossible to concentrate and was labelled "educable mentally retarded" in the fifth grade which damaged his self-esteem and confidence. While in high school, Brown used to fantasize about being on stage speaking to thousands of people.  After high school, Brown was firmly intent on becoming a DJ, he learned all he could about the workings of a radio station. One day, when a disc jockey became drunk on the air and Brown was the only other person at the station, he filled in at the microphone. Impressed, the owner of the station promoted Brown to part-time and then full-time disc jockey. In the late 1960s, Brown moved to Columbus, Ohio, where he had a top-rated radio program and was eventually given added duties as broadcast manager. This new level of influence inspired Brown to become more socially and politically conscious, urging his listeners to political action.  After being terminated from the radio station, he ran for election in the Ohio House of Representatives and won. After leaving the Ohio State Legislature, he shifted his career to television and became a host on PBS. From September to Nov 1993, he hosted a talk show, The Les Brown Show. When he entered the motivational speaking arena in the mid-1980s, he had virtually nothing, having moved to Detroit with his clothes and just one tape of his motivational speeches. He rented an office that he shared with an attorney.  Now, Les Brown is a highly sought-after resource in business and professional circles for Fortune 500 CEOs, small business owners, non-profit and community leaders from all sectors of society looking to expand opportunities. He energizes people to meet the challenges of the world around them. Hundreds of thousands are watching him on YouTube and tens of thousands interact with him regularly on Facebook. Episode Notes Journey through Space and Time to an alternate universe in which PBS, or the Public Broadcasting System to all you non-Americans, charges every household that wants to watch Masterpiece Theater the same price that one would pay Hulu if one wished to watch network television garbo without commercials. In this alternate universe, the monthly fee for Masterpiece Theater and Sesame Street is not enough revenue for PBS so they create a behemoth production studio to create Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City for every city all over the world. Sound unlikely? Silly? Now- close your eyes and return to the universe you call home. Remember your experience with the out-of-control, power-hungry, monthly-fee-crazy PBS in that alternate universe. When you wake in your own familiar bed, replace PBS with the BBC and Armistead Maupin with Chris Chibnall and you will be able to understand why Adric is worried about Series 11 of Doctor Who. SPOILERS/ POSSIBLE SPOILERS for any previously transmitted Doctor Who story... Welcome fellow travelers through Time and Space! We are most grateful that you have chosen to take a short interdimensional trip with us! SeannieWan and Adric take a good, hard look at the perfect storm of misunderstanding and confusion that seems to be rampant among the new production team and new BBC marketing team of Doctor Who re:Doctor Who. Something is amiss in merry, old England and the change-for-the-sake-of-change changes on Doctor Who are not things that anybody asked for... except a female Doctor... which is great, Adric... really, really great! That's Great, Adric is a Doctor Who podcast hosted by SeannieWan and Adric... kind of... that focuses on the Bigger Picture. Adric has a Gameboy for when he gets bored. For over half a century, the BBC has transmitted a science-fiction television program about a humanoid alien and his adventures traveling through all of Space and Time with a companion or two... and for a few years, with Adric. Doctor Who has seduced millions of socially anxious and awkward people of all ages. It has been a passion project, a cult hit, and now a worldwide phenomenon. That's Great, Adric! ...Really, really great. That's Great, Adric... A Doctor Who Podcast... and it's really really great. He was Artistic Director of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Studies while it was located in Boston and, after 18 years on the faculty of the Music Department of The City College of New York, he is now Distinguished Professor Emeritus although, as a performer, he remains as active as ever. Cynthia founded For Grace in 2002 to raise awareness about CRPS and five years later expanded the organization’s mission to include all women in pain. Before becoming ill, she was an accomplished ballerina and worked professionally as a dancer, actor and singer. Since 1997, she has been a leading advocate for women in pain, raising awareness through local, national and worldwide media as well as public speaking. Toussaint championed and gave critical testimony at two California Senate informational hearings. The first, in May 2001, was dedicated to CRPS awareness. The second took place in February 2004 and explored the chronic under treatment of and gender bias toward women in pain. Both of these efforts were the first of their kind in the nation. In 2006, Toussaint ran for the California State Assembly to bring attention to her CRPS Education Bill that Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed after she got it to his desk in its first year. Her next bill, a seven-year effort, was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown in 2015. This Step Therapy legislation reformed an unethical prescription practice used by the health insurance industry to save money in a way that increased the suffering of California pain patients. Toussaint was the first CRPS sufferer to be featured in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and on the Public Broadcasting System and National Public Radio. She is a consultant for The Discovery Channel, ABC News, FOX News, the National Pain Report and PainPathways, the official magazine of the World Institute of Pain. Also, she is a guide and guest contributor for Maria Shriver’s Architects of Change website. Her many speaking engagements include the National Institutes of Health and Capitol Hill. She is the author of Battle for Grace: A Memoir of Pain, Redemption and Impossible Love. Also, Toussaint is experiencing her first-ever partial CRPS remission mainly due to the narrative therapy of writing this book. Toussaint continues to be a leading advocate for health care reform in California. She was instrumental in changing public opinion which sparked sweeping HMO reform legislation that was signed by Governor Gray Davis in 1999. Her focus has now shifted to creating a single-payer, universal health care plan in California that would provide a model for the rest of the country. On this episode of the Healthy Wealthy and Smart Podcast, I had the pleasure of welcoming Cynthia Toussaint onto the show to discuss her experiences as a patient managing Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. Cynthia Toussaint is the founder and spokesperson of For Grace, an organization that promotes better care and wellness for women in pain. Toussaint championed and gave key testimony at two California Senate hearings – one was dedicated to CRPS awareness, the second explored the chronic under-treatment of and gender bias toward women in pain. She will lead a 2017 conference that will convene healthcare and policy leaders to bring pain care into the 21st century. The solutions proposed at the event will mandate structural changes that respond to patient needs and gender inequalities in California. Toussaint is the author of Battle for Grace: A Memoir of Pain, Redemption and Impossible Love. In this episode, we discuss: -The story behind Cynthia’s long battle with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome -How Cynthia developed independent survival solutions when medical providers would no longer help -Why gratitude, acceptance and grieving are necessary components for the management of chronic pain -For Grace: better care and wellness for women in pain -And so much more!   Cynthia’s long history of battling unimaginable physical and psychological pain has taught her how to be resilient. She believes, “We don’t know what we can live with until we are there.”   Cynthia has used her past experiences as inspiration for her advocacy and has created meaningful change for CRPS patients. Based on her experience, she stresses, “Don’t ever let anybody say you can’t get something done.”   Cynthia has found that adversity can breed strength and that, “People who go through the impossible odds survive and they go on to make the world a better place.”   After exhausting her family support system and the recommendations of her medical providers were unable to help with her chronic pain, Cynthia found her greatest relief through her own strength and will. She states, “With high impact chronic pain, we have to refuse to be a victim. We have to be our own advocates. We have to be deeply involved with self management.”   For more information on Cynthia: Cynthia Toussaint serves as Spokesperson at For Grace and has had Complex Regional Pain Syndrome for 34 years.
