Aged between 12 and 18 the tributes must fight to the death until there is one survivor. When Katniss volunteers as tribute to save her younger sister she ends up becoming a symbol of the resistance as she defies the rules of the Games. For additional notes and resources check out Douglas' website.Suzanne Collins' trilogyThe Hunger GamesCatching FireMockingjayAbout PanemPanis et circenses (Latin for bread and circuses), coined by Juvenal, c.100 AD. Note: circuses refer to (extremely violent) chariot races, gladiatorial spectacles, and so forth. Iam pridem, ex quo suffragia nulli uendimus, effudit curas; nam qui dabat olim imperium, fasces, legiones, omnia, nunc se continet atque duas tantum res anxius optat, panem et circenses (Satire 10.77–81).The parallel between Panem and the ancient Roman Empire, which controlled the masses through bread and circuses, is thus made explicit.Protagonist: Katniss Everdeen. Antagonist: President Snow.10 Biblical themes FreedomPeace. This is the way of the Lord, not war. What sort of society finds violence amusing?HopeVanity: the shallowness of the masses, as well as of the powers-that-be. This is biblical: truth exposes the manipulation, hypocrisy, and self-interest of human power structures.Social justiceCompassion: action, not just feeling.Sacrificial love (Katniss takes the place of her sister Prim).Leadership (though the protagonist is more of a Moses figure than a Christ figure)The need to be engaged, not withdrawing emotionally but staying in the fight.Minor biblical allusions (e.g. twelve districts, or thirteen minus one)Mini-article in Christianity Today (Christ in the Hunger Games, September 2012, p.86)"When The Hunger Games released to theaters in March, many dismissed it--and the popular book trilogy before it--as a grisly story about "kids killing kids." But the books, and the film... are so much more. Set in a post-apocalyptic future, the stories are a scathing--but engaging--social commentary, decrying not only violence but human trafficking, totalitarianism, and the unchecked power of evil. But there's also sacrificial love, mercy, hope, and redemption."For Christians, there are biblical parallels, especially in Peeta Mellark, a key character who consistently displays unconditional love; he's even willing to die for a friend. A baker's son, a young Peeta risks his well-being to give a starving girl the gift of bread. Later, as a teen, he risks his life to save the one he loves. In one scene, he takes a wound that was meant for another, then "buries" himself in the ground to hide. Three days later--imagery alert!--Peeta emerges from a cave with renewed vigor and hope. The film is rich with discussion fodder for discerning families with older children." --Mark Moring, CT senior associate editorAn anti-war piece?War is not glorified; death is tragic, people count. One can make a strong case that The Hunger Games is an anti-war polemic."I [Katniss] no longer feel any allegiance to these monsters called human beings... Because something is significantly wrong with a creature that sacrifices its children's lives to settle its differences. You can spin it anyway you like.... But in the end, who does it benefit? No one. The truth is, it benefits no one to live in a world where these things happen."—Mockingjay, p. 377.Why you should watch/read The Hunger GamesTo understand what younger people are being exposed to. This is vital if you work with youth ministry, or are a parent or grandparent. With 26 million copies in print (as of May 2013), how can we afford to ignore it?It's an easy conversation starter for evangelism. It's captivating, and the message is worth thinking about.

In The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, Katniss Everdeen recovers from her injuries in District 13 after being attacked by a hijacked Peeta Mellark. President Coin sends her to join the assault on the Capitol's armory in District 2, where she is able to rally the rebels and convince District 2 to join the rebellion. She is shot by a civilian but merely injured due to her bulletproof Mockingjay costume. Katniss is recruited into the Star Squad, which includes Gale and a recently married Finnick. Led by Boggs, the team makes their way to the Capitol, evading booby-trapped "pods" placed along the way. In setting up for a shot in a courtyard, Boggs is fatally wounded by a pod and bestows the Holo on Katniss. The group are then trapped in a building by Peacekeepers. Katniss lies and says that Coin has sent her on a mission to assassinate President Snow. The Peacekeepers destroy the building and the Capitol broadcasts a video of the attack announcing Katniss' apparent death, which is then interrupted by Coin who delivers an impassioned eulogy for Katniss to rally the rebels. The group decides to continue on to the mansion and quietly assassinate Snow.JOIN Inspired Disorder +PLUS Today!
SynopsisThe Hunger Games (2012)Every year, in the ruins of what was once North America, the Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of the 12 districts to send a boy and girl tribute between the ages of 12 and 18 to compete in the Hunger Games: a nationally televised event in which the 'tributes' fight each other to the death until one survivor remains. When Primrose Everdeen is "reaped," her older sister Katniss volunteers in her place as tribute to enter the games and is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts and knowledge when she's pitted against highly-trained and fierce tributes from all of the other districts and has to think quickly on her feet to survive. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)Along with fellow District 12 victor Peeta Mellark, Katniss Everdeen returns home safely after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games. Winning means that they must leave their loved ones behind and embark on a Victory Tour throughout the districts for a couple of days. Along the way Katniss senses a rebellion simmering upon the capitol - one that she and Peeta may have sparked - but the Capitol is still in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Hunger Games - the Third Quarter Quell - that could change Panem forever. Check out the Ladies on Video for their review of Catching Fire. Catching Fire is the second book in The Hunger Games series. As the sequel to the 2008 bestseller The Hunger Games, it continues the story of Katniss Everdeen and the post-apocalyptic nation of Panem. Following the events of the previous novel, a rebellion against the oppressive Capitol has begun, and Katniss and fellow tribute Peeta Mellark are forced to return to the arena in a special edition of the Hunger Games.
The Hunger Games is the first book in the series. The Hunger Games follows 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District 12 who volunteers for the 74th Hunger Games in place of her younger sister Primrose Everdeen. Also selected from District 12 is Peeta Mellark. They are mentored by their district's only living victor, Haymitch Abernathy, who won 24 years earlier and has since led a solitary life of alcoholism. Peeta confesses his longtime secret love for Katniss in a televised interview prior to the Games. This revelation stuns Katniss, who harbors feelings for Gale Hawthorne, her friend and hunting partner. Haymitch advises her to feign feelings for Peeta in order to gain wealthy sponsors who can provide crucial supplies to the "star-crossed lovers" during the Games. In the arena, Katniss allies with Rue, a young tribute from District 11 who reminds Katniss of her kid sister. When Rue is killed, Katniss places flowers around her body as an act of defiance toward the Capitol. Then the remaining tributes are alerted to a rule change that allows tributes from the same district to win as a team. Katniss finds a seriously wounded Peeta and nurses him back to health. When all of the other tributes are dead, the rule change is abruptly revoked. With neither willing to kill the other, Katniss comes up with a solution: a double suicide by eating poisonous berries. This forces the authorities to concede just in time to save their lives. During and after the Games, Katniss develops genuine feelings for Peeta and struggles to reconcile them with what she feels for Gale. Haymitch warns her that the danger is far from over. The authorities are furious at being made fools of, and the only way to try to allay their anger is to pretend that her actions were because of her love for Peeta. On the journey home, Peeta is dismayed to learn of the deception.
Tread Perilously's Failed Pilots month concludes with a look at the 2005 attempt to bring Warren Ellis's Global Frequency to the airwaves. Ex-cop Sean Flynn finds a mangled corpse and a tricked out mobile phone in a San Fransisco alley. Soon, he is recruited by the enigmatic Miranda Zero into a vast open conspiracy of do-gooders known as the Global Frequency. Partnered with theoretical physicist Dr. Katrina Finch, he must stop a refugee from a Soviet superpowers experiment before he absorbs all of the Bay Area's electrical power and explodes. Will they find the missing man? And will Miranda Zero be able to use her attitude to break into a top secret NSA black site? Erik and Justin immediately get lost in a discussion about comic books and comic book creators. Vancouver's Chinatown once again plays San Fransisco's Chinatown (and fails). Erik questions why the episode wasn't just set in Vancouver. The presence of Michelle Forbes leads to a discussion of her career and, maybe, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Justin becomes convinced the pilot script was a workshop project. Peeta Mellark makes a cameo appearance and Justin continues to deny the existence of The Vicar of Dibley.

In Episode 118 of Fireside Chat, we talk about one of the Catching Fire book-to-film changes that was recently revealed by Entertainment Weekly: Peeta will be able to swim. While Peeta knowing how to swim isn't really a big deal, many fans are upset about a comment Francis Lawrence made to EW when discussing this and other changes: "We made some changes to Peeta's narrative," says Francis Lawrence. "We manned him up a little." Why do Lawrence and those involved in the film franchise think Peeta needs to be "manned up"? How do we feel about this? How do YOU feel about this? Let us know! We also weigh in on the news that Coldplay will be releasing the first song from the Catching Fire soundtrack!

In Episode 108 of Fireside Chat, we weigh in on the news that COVERGIRL has partnered with Lionsgate to launch an advertising campaign and makeup collection inspired by the Capitol. In light of this announcement and the lavish Capitol-themed Catching Fire party at Cannes, many fans have begun to wonder if Lionsgate's "glorification" of the Capitol has gone too far. What do you think?Do things like the COVERGIRL collection, Capitol Couture, and last year's China Glaze nail polish line detract from the important messages contained within the Hunger Games trilogy? Or are they simply fun marketing strategies that we shouldn't worry about? We spend the latter portion of the show discussing the recent outbreak of "Peeta Paranoia" that has taken over large segments of the fandom. Peeta hasn't been very visible in Catching Fire promotions thus far; is this a sign that his role is being significantly reduced for the movies? A lot of people seem to think so. We try to put this worry to rest.
It's time for another unscripted episode of Hunger Games Fireside Chat! We have no set plan in place for Episode 105. We do, however, have a "topic cornucopia" teeming with listener-submitted questions, discussion topics, Crackpot Theories, What Ifs?, etc. Update: A list of the topics we pulled appears below. - Banan: When is the new trailer coming out?- Satsuma: Did the Capitol doctors choose not to save Peeta's leg in order to punish him?- Do you think Peeta was the same after he recovered from being hijacked? - Matilda: What happened to Beetee, Johanna, Enobaria, Annie, etc., after Coin's assassination?- Crackpot Theory: Gale only existed in Katniss's mind.- What if Peeta had been killed at the Cornucopia?- Nicole: What if Gale had been reaped instead of Peeta?- Ashley B.: In the book, [Finnick's death] was so rushed. What if in the movie they made him die in a different way or took out his death altogether?- Crackpot Theory (from Lola): Did District 13 bomb District 8 in order to make a good propo?- Maura: How did Plutarch, who in Mockingjay is on the side of the rebellion and working with District 13, become the new Head Gamemaker?- Gregory: What inspired Suzanne Collins to base the arena off of a clock?- Crackpot Theory: Cinna is alive.
