The practice of singing enables us to embody and give voice to characters who are living the way we would like to live, and experience the kinds of things we would like to experience. These characters also invite us to express powerful emotions and opinions, in ways that can empower us to communicate more passionately and effectively in real life. This week I review the book ‘Rethinking Positive Thinking' by Professor of Psychology at NY & Hamburg, Gabrielle Oettingen. I discuss; the cult of positivity, my opinion on positive thinking as a default, the benefits of positive thinking and positive fantasies, the drawbacks of positive fantasies, and using positive and negative thinking to set and achieve your goals. While I wouldn't rush to recommend reading the book unless you're interested in reading all the supporting data to the claims made in this podcast, I would suggest having a quick watch of Gabrielle Oettingen's talks on YouTube if you need further information. Prowadziła i prowadzi badania nad „niebezpieczeństwem pozytywnego myślenia, kontrastowaniem mentalnym i technikami samoregulacji, które pomagają skutecznie zapanować nad codziennym życiem i zaplanować długofalowy rozwój” (Oettingen, 2018).
Description Too often we overschedule ourselves, we don't know how to prioritize, we can't focus well, we procrastinate on difficult tasks, we turn to mindless entertainment, and we don't make time for the things that are most important in our lives. Christina Shenvi, a practicing Emergency Physician, educator and mom of 4, has made it her goal to help busy professionals have less stress by learning to think about their time differently and by giving them the tools they need to change their approach to time. Having always been an overachiever, Dr. Shenvi has an MD, a PhD, is working on an executive MBA, and graduated summa cum laude from Princeton. Despite all the achievements, she was full of self-doubt and imposterism. Constantly beating herself up, she was plagued by worry. Realizing she feared complacency more than she desired contentment, she embarked on a journey to learn how to hold both contentment and ambition at the same time. What You Will Hear Dr. Shenvi’s struggle with self doubt, imposterism and the motivation that fueled her achievements. As an overachiever, the moment when you realize you’ve achieved all of your goals or hit a slump Managing competing priorities. Patterns of thought and their effects on our lives. Rebuilding neural pathways. Implementation intentions. WOOP Dr. Shenvi’s venture into her current work helping other high performing professionals transform their minds. Strategy, efficiency, effort and managing your mind. Quotes “We recall the negative things so much more than the positive things.” “Be careful how you talk to yourself, because you’re listening.” “Your assumptions are your windows on the world. You need to wipe them down every now an again.” “The biggest transformations are in our minds.” “Put it on the calendar is a strong power move.” Mentioned Rethinking Positive Thinking by Gabrielle Oettingen www.timeforyourlife.org The Power of the WOOP framework The Politics of Promotion

I've been thinking about how I can help you optimize (technically, I'm pretty much *always* obsessing about it) and realized I should probably do some more behind-the-scenes videos to capture my (often messy) thought process about how to take Optimize to the next level and do my life's work while serving you profoundly and creating an exemplary business that scales in the process. 2000 Books for Ambitious Entrepreneurs - Author Interviews and Book Summaries
The obstacles that we think prevent us from realizing our deepest wishes can actually lead to their fulfillment. Starry-eyed dreaming isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and as it turns out, dreamers are not often doers. While optimism can help us alleviate immediate suffering and persevere in challenging times, merely dreaming about the future actually makes people more frustrated and unhappy over the long term and less likely to achieve their goals. In fact, the pleasure we gain from positive fantasies allows us to fulfill our wishes virtually, sapping our energy to perform the hard work of meeting challenges and achieving goals in real life. Based on her groundbreaking research and large-scale scientific studies, Oettingen introduces a new way to visualize the future, calledmental contrasting. It combines focusing on our dreams with visualizing the obstacles that stand in our way. By experiencing our dreams in our minds and facing reality we can address our fears, make concrete plans, and gain energy to take action.
What do we see when we zoom out? Scientists Michelle Thaller and Sean Carroll talk about the beginning and end of the Universe. Dan Carlin talks hardcore history, poker pro Annie Duke advises on improving your long game, Prof Hal Hershfield explains how we are disconnected from our future selves, psychologist Gabrielle Oettingen says positive thinking actually leads to negative outcomes, comedian Jimmy Dore relates a fight with a disgruntled audience member, and much more!
