Today I'm talking about some awesome work presented by Gabriele Oettingen, the researcher who wrote the book "Rethinking Positive Thinking. Oettinger developed this idea of ""Woop," an acronym that stands for "Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan."  The WOOP framework is used as a mental strategy for setting and achieving goals. Here's what each part of the acronym represents: Wish: This is where you identify and clarify your specific wish or goal. What do you want to achieve? It's important to be clear and specific about what you want. Outcome: In this step, you vividly imagine and visualize the positive outcome or result of achieving your wish. Think about how achieving your goal will make you feel and what the benefits will be. Obstacle: Here, you identify and acknowledge the obstacles, challenges, or barriers that might get in the way of you achieving your goal. It's about recognizing the potential roadblocks. Plan: The final step involves creating a plan to overcome the obstacles you've identified. You think about specific actions you can take to address the challenges and work toward your goal. This step makes your goal more actionable and realistic. By going through the WOOP process, you combine both positive thinking (the "Wish" and "Outcome" steps) and a realistic assessment of potential obstacles (the "Obstacle" step) to develop a concrete plan (the "Plan" step) for achieving your goals. It's a practical and structured approach to goal-setting and motivation.

Crina and Kirsten Get to Work

Twelve months from now you will feel, experience, imagine and embody something. Do you want to be in the drivers' seat or leave it up to chance? Setting intentions and working toward your goals is the way to get, become, dare we say manifest(?) exactly what you want for yourself, your life and your work.    SHOW NOTES    In this episode of Crina and Kirsten Get to Work, we get to ring in the New Year with Part 2 of a 2 part series on Reflections and Realizing Intentions.  In Episode 75 (what?!! 75 episodes!) we learned about the power of reflection.  Reflecting on the past year is a great start to setting intentions for the new year - and this episode focuses on how to make those intentions real.  As Crina says - and she says someone else said it - you are going to be someone in 12 months, you are going to have done things in 12 months and experienced things in 12 months - so who do you want to be and what do you want those things done and experiences had to be?   Last year we focused our “intentions” episode on setting mental intentions to achieve who we want to be, how we want to feel and how we want to react.   Take some time to reflect on last year - and organize the reflections.  It can be as simple as good and bad or you can define the categories you most resonate with.  Kirsten uses emotional, physical, work, relational, financial and spiritual.  Pick whatever feels right.   Once we reflect on last year, think about what we want to repeat (or not) in the coming year. We can set specific goals - anything from finding that new job, going on a date a month or creating one new experience a month - whatever our jam is, this is the time to clearly define it and set a goal.  And those goals can mirror your reflections - or not.   Once we set goals, we can direct our intentions to make those goals come to life.  How do we focus our intentions so that “stuff happens?” Depak Chopra writes, “intention is the starting point of every dream. It is the creative power that fulfills all of our needs, whether for money, relationships, spiritual awakening, or love.”  So, Depak, how does that work?   Many people find that reminders are helpful - post goals on the bathroom mirror, create a vision board or a vision box, journal and make a commitment to review that goals list once a week or once a month.  If we set a goal in January that does not feel good in August, dump it.  We can be flexible and allow for the space to change our minds.   Some people believe that just imagining it can make it so - those are The Secret folks.  And while there is certainly magic in the Universe and sometimes those things just happen - it's usually not the case.  A friend of Kirsten has had many goals of owning a second home somewhere and the opportunity seems to appear out of nowhere - so much so that the friend's husband has asked her to stop.  This is not most of our experiences.   Other people advocate for positive thinking, but it turns out that is not what it is cracked up to be.  Gabriele Oettingen is a Professor of Psychology at New York University and at the University of Hamburg. She wrote “Rethinking Positive Thinking” which synthesizes 20 years of research on the science of human motivation.  The research shows that positive thinking is much less promising than we think.  In the moment, positive thinking gives us pleasure, but in the long run if we simply have positive thoughts, we put in less energy and have fewer successes towards our goals. This leads to reduced happiness and loss of motivation.     Positive thinking is very helpful to explore possibilities in the future - and here is the catch, when positive thinking is combined with a good sense of reality.    It turns out that small steps and planning have a lot of influence on whether you achieve your goals.     It is important to take one small step towards your goal - and then another and another and another - and soon enough you will be there.  Kirsten tells a story about Dr. Nicole LePera who essentially changed her whole life by starting with drinking a glass of water every morning to begin to hydrate her body for the day.  If you want to save $1000, start with $100 - or even $10.    Another strategy is to plan, which is well articulated in a system called WOOP - in fact that is the name of the website advocating this method.  According to the WOOP (which stands for wish, outcome, obstacle, plan) website, “The obstacles that we think most impede us from fulfilling our wishes can actually help us to realize them. WOOP instructs us to dream our future dreams but then to imagine what obstacles inside ourselves prevent us from achieving these dreams.”  In other words, we need to understand what we want, what does getting it look like, what will get in our way and how to we get around, through or over that obstacle.   The New Year is a great time to go through this process of reflection, goal setting, intention setting and directing and goal actualization, but we can do this any time of year or multiple times a year.  Our lives are precious - creating something we love will give us ease, meaning and joy!

In our last few +1s, we’ve been Optimizing our Optimism.   After hanging out with some long-lived nuns, we spent some time with Marin Seligman (NOT SMOKING two packs a day) then we spent some time with Sonja Lyubomirsky (journaling on our awesome future lives).   Today I want to go back to Kate Hefferon’s textbook: Positive Psychology and the Body.   RIGHT AFTER the section in which Kate chats about the nuns, she shares some wisdom in a sub-section called “Caveat to optimism.”   Cue suspenseful music.   → Dun DUN DUNNN!!!   Here’s what Kate has to say: “As with most of the topics in positive psychology, we must take into consideration the alternative viewpoints. We need to be very open about the benefits and indeed the negatives when dealing with optimism in health. Optimism may cause individuals to persist at trying to control situations that are biologically uncontrollable, which may in turn lead to enhanced levels of distress, disappointment and depression. It may also cause us to forgo adoption of medical advice and treatment. Overall, the ‘cult of optimism’ and tyranny of positive thinking must not go unheeded. Kashdan and Rottenberg have argued that psychological flexibility is imperative in illness and health environments, enabling us to adapt to uncertain environments and outcomes and to better adjust to these.”   Ah!!   The “cult of optimism” and the “tyranny of positive thinking” MUST NOT go unheeded.   Which is why Gabriele Oettingen’s Rethinking Positive Thinking is one of my favorite books and why we come back to her wisdom again and again.   One more time: Science says, we MUST (!) embrace the constraints of reality and honestly appraise obstacles.    It also says that unmitigated good isn’t good.    Instead, we’d be wise to counterbalance our levity with the appropriate gravity to create optimal BUOYANCY!   When?   How about…   TODAY!!!

On today’s Brain Booster it is my great pleasure to introduce as my guest Gabriele Oettingen. In this current situation this may well be one of THE most important podcasts I have ever done. Gabriele’s work is truly groundbreaking and incredibly thought provoking. It is counter intuitive to ‘conventional wisdom’. So often in golf or life we are inundated with advice to “think positively.” Just ‘Think positively, believe in yourself’!!! The general message is the same: look on the bright side, be optimistic in the face of adversity, and focus on your dreams. And whether we’re trying to motivate ourselves to win a golf tournament or run a marathon, we’re told time and time again that focusing on fulfilling our wishes will make them come true. Gabriele Oettingen draws on more than twenty years of research in the science of human motivation to reveal why the conventional wisdom falls short. The obstacles that we think prevent us from realizing our deepest wishes can actually lead to their fulfillment. Starry-eyed dreaming isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and as it turns out, dreamers are not often doers. Based on her research and large-scale scientific studies, Oettingen introduces a new way to visualize the future, called mental contrasting. It combines focusing on our dreams with visualizing the obstacles that stand in our way. By experiencing our dreams in our minds and facing reality we can address our fears, make concrete plans, and gain energy to take action. In Rethinking Positive Thinking, Oettingen applies mental contrasting to three key areas of personal change— becoming healthier, nurturing personal and professional relationships, and performing better at work. She introduces us today to the key phases of mental contrasting using a proven four-step process called WOOP—Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan—and offers advice and exercises on how to best apply this method to daily life. Through mental contrasting, people in Oettingen’s studies have become significantly more motivated to quit smoking, lose weight, get better grades, sustain fulfilling relationships, and negotiate more effectively in business situations. The potential effect you could enjoy in your game as a result of this information are profound. Gabriele Oettingen is a Professor of Psychology at New York University and the University of Hamburg and a bestselling author. Her research focuses on human motivation and goal setting, exploring the impact of the way we look at the future on our emotions and behaviour. We’re living in an age where positive thinking is all the rage – from pop music to political speeches thee message is the same: think positive, focus on your dreams and they’ll come true before you know it. The problem with following this advice is not only that it’s empty and hard to action – but that it can actually reduce your chances of achieving your goals. Gabriele Oettingen has spent twenty years researching the science of human motivation and discovered time and again that conventional positive thinking falls short. By changing the way we think about the future her research has proven that we can become healthier, improve our personal relationships and perform better at work. In this conversation we discuss a range of topics including: - How people normally set goals and what they’re doing wrong - The pitfalls of positive thinking and how to avoid them - The practical tools you can apply to get better results in your life So whether you’re looking to make some major changes in your life or just level up that extra one per cent, you’ll learn the practical strategies needed to change your mindset and habits in order to achieve your goals.

The obstacles that we think prevent us from realizing our deepest wishes can actually lead to their fulfillment. Starry-eyed dreaming isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and as it turns out, dreamers are not often doers. While optimism can help us alleviate immediate suffering and persevere in challenging times, merely dreaming about the future actually makes people more frustrated and unhappy over the long term and less likely to achieve their goals. In fact, the pleasure we gain from positive fantasies allows us to fulfill our wishes virtually, sapping our energy to perform the hard work of meeting challenges and achieving goals in real life. Based on her groundbreaking research and large-scale scientific studies, Oettingen introduces a new way to visualize the future, calledmental contrasting. It combines focusing on our dreams with visualizing the obstacles that stand in our way. She is the author of more than a 100 articles and book chapters on thinking about the future and the control of cognition, emotion, and behavior. Her first trade book, Rethinking Positive Thinking: Inside the New Science of Motivation challenges the prevailing popular view. In Rethinking Positive Thinking, Oettingen applies mental contrasting to three key areas of personal change— becoming healthier, nurturing personal and professional relationships, and performing better at work. She introduces readers to the key phases of mental contrasting using a proven four-step process called WOOP—Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan—and offers advice and exercises on how to best apply this method to daily life. Through mental contrasting, people in Oettingen’s studies have become significantly more motivated to quit smoking, lose weight, get better grades, sustain fulfilling relationships, and negotiate more effectively in business situations. Whether you are unhappy and struggling with serious problems or you just want to improve, discover, and explore new opportunities, this book will deepen your ideas about human motivation and help you boldly chart a new path ahead.

Michael Covel speaks with Gabriel Oettingen on today’s podcast. Gabriele Oettingen is a Professor of Psychology at New York University and the University of Hamburg. Her research focuses on how we think about the future, and how this impacts cognition, emotion, and behavior. Her first book is called Rethinking Positive Thinking. This is an interesting conversation for Covel--Oettingen is looking at data, just like traders would, but she is looking at data on motivation and positive thinking. Is too much positive thinking a problem? It can be. Is there a way to go about thinking about the future, and thinking positively? Oettingen has a framework and structure that can help us all. Covel and Oettingen discuss positive thinking, optimism and over-confidence; how positive thinking can reign in your sense of urgency; the effect of positive thinking on us from a scientific viewpoint; whether Oettingen views her work as an attack on the self-help industry; Oettingen’s process and how she views data; the WOOP (Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan) process; understanding each component part of WOOP; “ah-ha” moments in Oettingen’s early development; the idea of WOOP as mental contrasting; non-conscious processes.
