Today I'm talking about some awesome work presented by Gabriele Oettingen, the researcher who wrote the book "Rethinking Positive Thinking. Oettinger developed this idea of ""Woop," an acronym that stands for "Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan."  The WOOP framework is used as a mental strategy for setting and achieving goals. Here's what each part of the acronym represents: Wish: This is where you identify and clarify your specific wish or goal. What do you want to achieve? It's important to be clear and specific about what you want. Outcome: In this step, you vividly imagine and visualize the positive outcome or result of achieving your wish. Think about how achieving your goal will make you feel and what the benefits will be. Obstacle: Here, you identify and acknowledge the obstacles, challenges, or barriers that might get in the way of you achieving your goal. It's about recognizing the potential roadblocks. Plan: The final step involves creating a plan to overcome the obstacles you've identified. You think about specific actions you can take to address the challenges and work toward your goal. This step makes your goal more actionable and realistic. By going through the WOOP process, you combine both positive thinking (the "Wish" and "Outcome" steps) and a realistic assessment of potential obstacles (the "Obstacle" step) to develop a concrete plan (the "Plan" step) for achieving your goals. It's a practical and structured approach to goal-setting and motivation.

This evidence-based approach is great because it allows individuals to create a plan that addresses any difficulties they may face while also considering their desired outcome. Practicing the WOOP method helps to build confidence, increase motivation, and foster a sense of self-efficacy, which can be beneficial when striving to attain personal goals.• First, identify your wish or goal in detail, being clear about how you know when you've achieved it. Consider something in your life that you wish to improve: your career, education, relationships, or anything else. It should be challenging, realistic, and achievable.• Next, flesh out this outcome in your mind's eye, visualizing both the good and bad aspects. Visualizing your outcome helps you understand why you want to accomplish this specific goal. Specificity here is important because you won't be nearly as motivated to carry out your ideas if you have a hazy sense of what success would feel like or how your life would improve.• Carefully consider the obstacles in this plan, being honest and realistic about the unavoidable effort and challenge involved. Consider what it might look and feel like to have your objective met. Spend some time thoroughly imagining, seeing, and feeling what it would be like to achieve the finest potential outcome.• Finally, make a plan that addresses these obstacles so you'll know what to do when setbacks occur. This is important because keeping your options open will help you get up when things don't go your way. #Christiansen #DrGabrieleOettingen #Fritzsche #Krott #LifelongLearner #Visualizing #VisualizingHurdles #WOOP #RussellNewton #NewtonMG #PeterHollins #TheScienceofSelf #TheLifelongLearner

For more details on this podcast visit: https://www.journeybeyondweightloss.com/blog/89 Next week is Thanksgiving here in the states, and then we move full time into the Holiday Season! It's happening fast!! This time of year is always tough for people who struggle with obesity, for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is all the tempting treats around! So I wanted to take some time and talk about what we can do to prepare for the holidays so we don't gain any weight.  I recently discovered a process called WOOP, which stands for Wish, Outcome, Obstacle and Plan. Listen in as Marchelle and I use this process to plan for success during our holiday seasons, and then you can WOOP your holidays too! Episode Highlights: (07:23) One study showed that people gain just one pound over the holiday season, but that one pound never comes off! So if you gain a pound a year between 30 and 60, that means you are 30 pounds heavier by the time you hit 60 than you were at 30, purely from indulging in holiday treats. Frankly I believe most people gain more than that, as this was just one small study.  (10:00) To handle the holidays, we're going to use a process called WOOP, which is based on 20 years of research done by a scientist named Gabriele Oettingen. WOOP stands for; Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan. Gabrielle has a website called woopmylife.org, where she trains you how to do this. I would recommend you listen to this episode and then go to her website as well. (23:53) The plan is an “if”, and “then”. So you think about what you can do to overcome your obstacle. You name an action that you can take or a thought you can think that would overcome the obstacle.

Gabriele Oettingen is a Professor of Psychology and author originally from Germany. She has been teaching at New York University and the University of Hamburg for more than 20 years. Her research focuses on the Science of Motivation and explains why positive thinking alone is not enough to achieve our goals. Upon more than 25 years of research, she developed a goal-achievement strategy called WOOP. WOOP stands for WISH, OUTCOME, OBSTACLE, and PLAN. This empirically based approach focuses on helping people connect to their biggest wishes, clarify the desired outcome, identify the obstacles that may stand in the way, and set a realistic plan in just ten minutes or less! I first heard about Gabriele's work three years ago, and I found it immensely helpful for setting goals. This time of year, many of us are thinking about what new objectives we want to achieve, so I was so thrilled to be able to get Gabriele on. With Gabriele's advice, you can make this the year that you actually achieve some of your deepest desires, be it English fluency, weight loss, better health, a new job, or even less anxiety! Gabriele shared with me a bit about how she ended up in the USA and some surprising cultural differences. Whether she still finds it challenging communicating in English. Why the advice to be optimistic or think positive may not always be to your benefit. How you can use WOOP to identify the right goals for this new year and actually achieve them. When you should use WOOP to be most successful and plenty of examples. How we can deal with risk aversion. How you can use WOOP to be a better parent. So much more. I'm so excited to bring you Gabriele's work and wisdom, I hope you find it as helpful as I have. Let's jump into episode 23 of Beyond Borders! Download the App .......... Crina and Kirsten Get to Work
End of the Year Tune-Up Part 2: Setting Intentions

Crina and Kirsten Get to Work

Twelve months from now you will feel, experience, imagine and embody something. Do you want to be in the drivers' seat or leave it up to chance? Setting intentions and working toward your goals is the way to get, become, dare we say manifest(?) exactly what you want for yourself, your life and your work.    SHOW NOTES    In this episode of Crina and Kirsten Get to Work, we get to ring in the New Year with Part 2 of a 2 part series on Reflections and Realizing Intentions.  In Episode 75 (what?!! 75 episodes!) we learned about the power of reflection.  Reflecting on the past year is a great start to setting intentions for the new year - and this episode focuses on how to make those intentions real.  As Crina says - and she says someone else said it - you are going to be someone in 12 months, you are going to have done things in 12 months and experienced things in 12 months - so who do you want to be and what do you want those things done and experiences had to be?   Last year we focused our “intentions” episode on setting mental intentions to achieve who we want to be, how we want to feel and how we want to react.   Take some time to reflect on last year - and organize the reflections.  It can be as simple as good and bad or you can define the categories you most resonate with.  Kirsten uses emotional, physical, work, relational, financial and spiritual.  Pick whatever feels right.   Once we reflect on last year, think about what we want to repeat (or not) in the coming year. We can set specific goals - anything from finding that new job, going on a date a month or creating one new experience a month - whatever our jam is, this is the time to clearly define it and set a goal.  And those goals can mirror your reflections - or not.   Once we set goals, we can direct our intentions to make those goals come to life.  How do we focus our intentions so that “stuff happens?” Depak Chopra writes, “intention is the starting point of every dream. It is the creative power that fulfills all of our needs, whether for money, relationships, spiritual awakening, or love.”  So, Depak, how does that work?   Many people find that reminders are helpful - post goals on the bathroom mirror, create a vision board or a vision box, journal and make a commitment to review that goals list once a week or once a month.  If we set a goal in January that does not feel good in August, dump it.  We can be flexible and allow for the space to change our minds.   Some people believe that just imagining it can make it so - those are The Secret folks.  And while there is certainly magic in the Universe and sometimes those things just happen - it's usually not the case.  A friend of Kirsten has had many goals of owning a second home somewhere and the opportunity seems to appear out of nowhere - so much so that the friend's husband has asked her to stop.  This is not most of our experiences.   Other people advocate for positive thinking, but it turns out that is not what it is cracked up to be.  Gabriele Oettingen is a Professor of Psychology at New York University and at the University of Hamburg. She wrote “Rethinking Positive Thinking” which synthesizes 20 years of research on the science of human motivation.  The research shows that positive thinking is much less promising than we think.  In the moment, positive thinking gives us pleasure, but in the long run if we simply have positive thoughts, we put in less energy and have fewer successes towards our goals. This leads to reduced happiness and loss of motivation.     Positive thinking is very helpful to explore possibilities in the future - and here is the catch, when positive thinking is combined with a good sense of reality.    It turns out that small steps and planning have a lot of influence on whether you achieve your goals.     It is important to take one small step towards your goal - and then another and another and another - and soon enough you will be there.  Kirsten tells a story about Dr. Nicole LePera who essentially changed her whole life by starting with drinking a glass of water every morning to begin to hydrate her body for the day.  If you want to save $1000, start with $100 - or even $10.    Another strategy is to plan, which is well articulated in a system called WOOP - in fact that is the name of the website advocating this method.  According to the WOOP (which stands for wish, outcome, obstacle, plan) website, “The obstacles that we think most impede us from fulfilling our wishes can actually help us to realize them. WOOP instructs us to dream our future dreams but then to imagine what obstacles inside ourselves prevent us from achieving these dreams.”  In other words, we need to understand what we want, what does getting it look like, what will get in our way and how to we get around, through or over that obstacle.   The New Year is a great time to go through this process of reflection, goal setting, intention setting and directing and goal actualization, but we can do this any time of year or multiple times a year.  Our lives are precious - creating something we love will give us ease, meaning and joy!

It's a common belief that perfectionism is one of the main causes of procrastination. Does having high standards make it harder to start?  Many of my colleagues in the legal profession, for example, have perfectionist tendencies. Procrastination can get lawyers into trouble. It creates high stress and anxiety, and often leads to subpar work and serious errors. But as it turns out, there's no strong link between perfectionism and procrastination, says Dr. Piers Steel. He's a professor and leading researcher on the science of motivation and procrastination. He's the author of the book, The Procrastination Equation.Dr. Steel has a mathematical formula that accounts for motivation and procrastination. It is [Expectancy (E) x Value (V)] divided by [Impulsiveness (I) x Delay (D)] = MotivationThe formula is based on 30 years of research and hundreds of studies. To have more motivation, and less procrastination, you want the numerators (E and V) to be high and the denominators (I & D) to be low. In this episode, I describe 4 ways to stop procrastinating and just start: (1) create success spirals; (2) practice mental contrasting; (3) get super-focused; and (4) set clear goals. Success spirals increase expectancy, mental contrasting raises value, super-focus reduces impulsiveness, and clear goals minimize delay. I review Dr. Gabriele Oettingen's WOOP method for incorporating If-Then statements into your plan for overcoming obstacles. WOOP stands for Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan. I also explain Dr. Tim Pychyl's theory that procrastination is an emotion management problem, not a time management issue. We procrastinate because we're thinking about all the things that might happen rather than just starting what we have to do. Procrastination is a coping strategy to deal with negative emotions like frustration and anxiety. It is based on assumptions that the task won't feel good. When we procrastinate, we have less time to complete the project.  We sometimes tell ourselves we work better under pressure. But we just make more errors when we wait until the deadline is tomorrow. Whatever you have to do, just start now. Resources Cited:  Pierce Steel, The Procrastination Equation: How to Stop Putting Things Off and Start Getting Stuff Done Gabriele Oettingen, Rethinking Positive Thinking: Inside the New Science of Motivation  Timothy A Pychyl, Solving the Procrastination Puzzle: A Concise Guide to Strategies for Change Music by:Sebastian Brian MehrCheers,Dyan WilliamsCheck out the book: The Incrementalist, A Simple Productivity System to Create Big Results in Small StepsVisit website: www.dyanwilliams.comSubscribe to productivity e-newsletter

In recent episodes we've been talking about why the popular idea of positively fantasizing IS NOT ENOUGH to help us accomplish our goals. In fact, Prof. Gabriele Oettingen, in a previous BrainFirst Radio episode, had the following things to say about this whole positive fantasizing approach:“The more positively university graduates fantasized about an easy transition into work life, the fewer dollars they earned two years later. Also, the fewer job offers they received, and importantly, the fewer job applications they had actually sent out.”“With students, the more positively they fantasized about their success in an exam, the less well they actually did in the exam.”“In the interpersonal domain, with students, those who positively fantasized about getting together with their crushie, meaning, with the person they really like, the less likely it was that they actually got into a romantic relationship.”“We also saw this effect with the elderly. The more positively, for example, hip replacement surgery patients fantasized about their easy recovery after surgery, the less well they could move their new joint, the fewer steps they could walk, and the less well was their general recovery - as judged by the physiotherapist.”We need a better approach - one that enables us to make behavior change stick!

Same procedure as every year!
