Behavioral economics has given us a lot of insights into how we can influence our own and other's behavior. But the approach has some serious limitations, especially when applied to promoting health behaviors.Joining me on the podcast is Michelle Segar, a frequent guest here on the Change Academy. Michelle is an NIH-funded researcher at the University of Michigan. She's also a best-selling author and health coach whose work focuses on fostering behavior change that can survive the complexity and unpredictability of the real world.TakeawaysTake some time on a regular basis to reflect on how your personal values, beliefs, and motivations align with your desired behavioral changes (and vice versa!)Acknowledge emotional and psychological issues that may present barriers to change. Consider seeking support from a mental health professional, especially if you face challenges like depression, anxiety, or past trauma.Take a look at your social and physical environment and think about how these factors impact your behavior. Consider where you might find supportive communities or how altering your environment might encourage positive habits.Consider getting involved with community initiatives or advocacy groups that are working to address broader societal issues that impact our ability to choose healthier behaviors.  For example, groups advocating to make our cities and neighborhoods more walkable or bike-friendly, or organizing mobile farmer's markets, or upgrading local recreational facilities.  MentionedThey Thought We Were Ridiculous (5-part series on the history of Behavioral Economics)Better habits aren't the answer?   (Change Academy Ep #111, with Michelle Segar)No Sweat: How the Simple Science of Motivation Can Bring You a Lifetime of Fitness, by Michelle SegarThe Joy Choice: How to Finally Achieve Lasting Changes in Eating and Exercise, by Michelle Certification program for health coaches --Stronger Bones: Practical Strategies for Lifelong Bone Health - Sign up for the LIVE WORKSHOP at http://changeacademypodcast.com/bones ★ Support this podcast ★

We're going back into the vault for this episode for a conversation that I had in January 2019 with the one and only James Clear. James is best known as the author of Atomic Habits: An Easy And Proven Way To Build Good Habits And Break Bad Ones. During our conversation, James discusses why he wrote Atomic Habits and how it differs from other habit books, the importance of breaking habits down into "atomic" small changes, and the "two minute rule" for making habits simple and easy to do. We also get into how seasons and social reinforcement can help with habit consistency, strategies for curtailing behaviours that you want to do in moderation, and his collaboration with Baronfig. Key Discussion Points Start small with habits by scaling them down until they take two minutes or less. This makes them simple to automate. Layer many small habit changes on top of each other to achieve big results over time. Use tools and software to help with habit consistency, especially for infrequent habits. Slow down and pay attention to your current behaviours to identify where to insert new habits. Write things down in a central place to capture ideas and sort them later. Don't worry about organization in the moment. I hope this very productive conversation with James Clear gives you some valuable insights into building good habits through small, sustainable changes. Context heavily influences our behavior (regular listeners of the show know our “context matters” mantra well!). Sometimes, because of what life throws at us, we have to re-evaluate our options. The best choice isn't always the perfect choice. For instance, in an ideal world, we might be planning a 5 mile run after work. But instead we need to collect our sick child from school early and have to settle for a 2 mile run on the treadmill in the basement, or some dancing in the kitchen while we unload the dishwasher. It's the perfect, imperfect choice, or what our guest, Michelle Segar calls The Joy Choice. Michelle Segar PhD is an award-winning lifestyle coach and sustainable behavior change researcher at the University of Michigan. For nearly three decades, she has pioneered methods to create sustainable healthy behavior change that are being used to boost patient health, employee well-being, and gym membership retention. “My approach to creating sustainable change is fundamentally grounded in changing the people's mindsets.” ~ Michelle Segar PhD In this episode, we are lucky enough to talk to Michelle about her new book, “The Joy Choice: How to Finally Achieve Lasting Changes in Eating and Exercise”. We discuss why Michelle steers away from habits as a way of framing behavior change, the role of the executive function, and of course, how music influences her life.   Topics (3:20) Welcome and speed round questions. (7:31) Why we all need to find The Joy Choice. (14:26) Why do we beat ourselves up about missing exercise and diet goals? (17:35) How our identity can motivate our behavior change. When was the last time that you knew you had to do something but you really didn't want to do it?   Chances are that there's are several things in the day for each of us that we would rather not do. But there's a way to get you to actually want to do all of these things.   In The Joy Choice by Michelle Segar, she explains that it all boils down to knowing what the right why is.   By doing this, we can turn our chores into gifts.   For example, telling yourself that you HAVE to go to the gym versus living in the understanding that you GET to go to the gym should bring on an instant shift in energy.   Segar suggests that we make the connection between the decision to engage in a behavior and the way that we will feel now versus the way we might feel some day.   An example of this that is shared in the book is a set of participants who were surveyed at the gym and asked why they were working out.   Those that responded with answers along the lines of ‘because it makes me feel better each day when I exercise' had a much higher success rate for health and fitness versus those who answered with responses such as, ‘I want to lose 50 pounds.'   Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton break down ways to see through the big picture so that you can enjoy the colors as you create your very own masterpiece.     ⩥ PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL ⩤ https://bi3xbvVont.ly/   CLICK HERE for our best-selling products: https://amzn.to/3xaG3xw and https://rdbl.co/3DIQVUC   CLICK HERE to join our free Police, Fire, Military and Families Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/38w2e7r   Check out our website and learn more about how you can work with LEO Warriors by going to: https://www.leowarriors.com/   Like what you hear? Award-winning researcher and health coach Michelle Segar sits down with Chase to talk about what it takes to achieve lasting changes in our health and fitness. Michelle discusses the role of goal-setting and motivation on our journey of growth, and how having a strong “why” drives us forward as we make our daily choices. She encourages us to always have self-compassion, and to see the path of lasting change as an opportunity to better not just ourselves, but those we care about as well! Does it ever actually serve us or is it always going to be nothing more than a crutch? Getting clear on your “why” is, more often than not, the missing link between making lifestyle changes, and sustaining those changes Michelle explains why she prefers to use the term “daily choice making” instead of “behavior change” Not every big decision needs to be life-or-death. What I discuss with Sarah Fay: Almost one in five people (47.1 million) in the US have been diagnosed with a mental health condition. That number increased by about 1.5 million from last year. More may follow with a mounting sense of isolation in our fragmented country. But is a mental diagnosis the path to healing or a self-fulfilling prophecy? Sarah suffered from six mental illness diagnoses for almost thirty years, all labeled because of the DSM. She realized the DSM is seriously flawed, even useless, but it's all we have through that process. John R. Miles - Why we become what we think about and seven ways you can build positive beliefs | Brought to you by Masterworks (https://www.masterworks.io/ code passion) Notable American radio speaker and author Earl Nightingale once said, “We become what we think about.” This truthful statement embodies and emphasizes just how vital our mindsets and beliefs are to creating the lives we live. -- ► Full show notes: https://passionstruck.com/you-become-what-you-believe/  -- ► Subscribe to My YouTube Channel Here: https://www.youtube.com/c/JohnRMiles --► Subscribe to the podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/passion-struck-with-john-r-miles/id1553279283 *Our Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/passionstruck. A belief is any cognitive notion that is held as accurate. It is the acceptance that something exists, even though its existence cannot be proved. This means that the potency of a belief is entirely dependent on a person's choice to accept or reject it. Take, for example, two people with similar qualifications who are given $1000 to use for starting a new business. One of them believes they can start a business, profit, and earn thousands of dollars — a beneficial belief. In contrast, the other person believes $1,000 is too little to start anything of meaning and fails to start anything — a restricting belief. Show Links Questions that you and your friends or family members can discuss about this episode: What are beliefs and how are they formed?. What did you find most inspiring about the story of Sean Stephenson? What can you learn about the self-limiting beliefs from Stephenson's story? What is the most fascinating thing about our belief system? What are the differences between beneficial and restricting beliefs? What are seven things you can do to form more beneficial beliefs? New habit formation is so challenging. Not only do most of us struggle to establish new routines, we often rebel against our own best interest and go in the other direction. When we fall off a new diet regime, we then feast on junk food. When we slip up and have a drink during ‘dry January,' we then proceed to have five more. This rebellious self-sabotaging behavior isn't unique and psychologists have studied it extensively.  On this week's podcast, we meet psychologist, Michelle Segar, who suggests that the solution to making healthy lifestyle changes a long-lasting habit is to focus on making smaller strides toward your goal. It's a refreshing approach to all or nothing thinking that dooms most of us to failure.  Learn Why reactance behavior often drives us to rebel against rules and restrictions How CHAOS (Confusion, Hubbub and Order) can make sticking to new health habits more difficult Why it's important to change your internal dialogue  Links Michelle's Site ABOUT OUR GUEST Michelle is a researcher at the University of Michigan who's spent nearly thirty years studying how to help people adopt healthy behaviors. When it comes to making behavior change around diet and exercise, it's no secret that many people fail in their efforts. My guest would say that's because too often we only concentrate on the things that drive us towards that change — whether willpower, or motivation, or the rewards that turn behaviors into habits — and that we need to think more about the obstacles keeping us from making the decisions we desire. Her name is Michelle Segar and she's a behavioral science researcher and health coach, as well as the author of The Joy Choice: How to Finally Achieve Lasting Changes in Eating and Exercise. Today on the show, Michelle explains why exercise and eating aren't conducive to becoming habits — at least of the automatic variety — and why it's more helpful to think of these behaviors in terms of "life space" and "choice points." She makes the case for why we shouldn't just focus on what drives behaviors, but also understand what disrupts them, and unpacks four of these disruptors: temptation, rebellion, accommodation, and perfection. Michelle then offers a three-step decision tool for dealing with these disruptors, and explains how to develop the flexibility to choose the perfect imperfect option that keeps you consistent and even celebrate and enjoy the decision to do something instead of nothing.Resources Related to the PodcastMichelle's previous appearance on the show — Podcast #575: Counterintuitive Advice on Making Exercise a Sustainable HabitAoM Article: How I Finally Made Flossing a HabitAoM Podcast #782: Anxiety Is a Habit — Here's How to Break It (With Judson Brewer)Kurt LewinFreakonomics episode that includes Daniel Kahneman referencing LewinGrounded cognitionAffective–Reflective Theory of physical inactivity and exerciseConnect With Michelle SegarMichelle's Website
