The Not Ready for Prime Time Podcast: The Early Years of SNL
SNL kicks off 1978 with Steve Martin returning for his second (but not last) episode of Season 3 along with not one but two musical guests.Four musical numbers, and a film by Gary Weis, do not leave much time for sketches but Steve and The Not Ready for Prime Time Players make the most of their time with the return of some classic characters and the (re)introduction of one of the most iconic characters of the era at the Weekend Update desk. And, if all that wasn't enough, the show wraps things up with Steve strapping on a banjo and rocking out with The Dirt Band.Subscribe today! Georgia State Senator Julian Bond hosts this episode of NBC's Saturday Night Live. If you're not familiar with Julian Bond don't worry - he uses the entirety of the monologue to fill you in.Bond is a decent host (especially for a politician) who isn't afraid to take part in everything this weird and wild episode asks of him. He meets Jimmy Carter AND the Farbers. And if that wasn't enough...Tom Waits offers up a jazz number, Brick brings it, and Gary Weis does a documentary on Patti Smith!Darin Patterson from The SNL Nerds Show joins us offer his perspective on this episode and just might help Brad and Gary come around to more sketches than they thought.Subscribe today! Broderick Crawford hosts this week's episode of Saturday Night...Live and the addition of the "LIVE" was so much for Crawford that he fulfills most of his hosting duties from a plush armchair. This is an interesting episode of SNL (that's right, we can call it SNL now) because while the host doesn't play a big role in the episode, you do kind of fall in love with him. Or at least join him for a drink (or three), which he apparently would have been happy to do. His charm lends itself brilliantly to one of the best Gary Weis films we've seen so far and there are some wild behind-the-scenes stories from filming the week of St. Patty's Day. We also have a lot of sketches (some WITH Crawford) that are worth talking about such as the famous Bill Murray "New Kid" plea, Baba Wawa interviewing Godzilla, and a wonderful piece of physical comedy from Gilda.Lastly, there are 3 musical numbers from two different bands.Yet, with all this in the episode, Brad and Gary still wonder if the juice was worth the squeeze.Subscribe today! Sissy Spacek, obviously known for her comedic chops, is this week's host of NBC's Saturday Night. While nominated for an Academy Award for her role in Carrie, Spacek hosts a very…interesting episode. Full of baton twirling (thanks, Gary Weis) and a next-level performance from Richard Baskin this episode is one to remember…we think, we can't really remember. Luckily, Seth Abramovitch, of The Hollywood Reporter and "It Happened in Hollywood" podcast, joins us to discuss this one-of-a-kind episode. Subscribe today! Gary Weis has had a diverse background that has taken him from the music industry in the 80's to running a hotel and restaurant where putting ‘bums on seats' was the name of the game. Fast forward to the digital age and Gary applies the same principles to driving quality leads to your sales funnel. As Gary says, a business can not survive without sales and marketing is the precursor to that. The challenge for people who have dabbled in marketing and not having a great experience is like saying that using timber is no good for building a house. Unless you're qualified to build a house, you'll no doubt have a different result doing it yourself to that of a qualified builder with the right tools.Gary mentioned that every business needs a slightly different approach depending upon their stage, size and requirements and find out what you don't know.Gary has offered a complimentary call if you'd like to investigate your marketing strategies.Gary Weis can be contacted atLinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/online-marketing-brisbane/Website https://www.sbim.com.auStephen Sandor CEO Inspiring BusinessInspiring Business websitewww.inspiringbusiness.net Book an Exploration Call herehttps://inspiringbusiness.net/exploration-call-booking/ The Scale to Success Systemhttps://inspiringbusiness.net/deep-dive-program/Stephen Sandor LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephen-sandor/Inspiring Business LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/company/inspiring-businessFacebook https://www.facebook.com/inspiringbusinessaustralia

In this week's episode, host Scott J. Davis (@scottwritesfilm) and guest Matthew Turner (@FilmFan1971) get musical and podcast hard... First, we jump back to 1978 and jump into the world of The Rutles, a famous rock band with some striking similarities to a local band from Liverpool. Eric Idle and Gary Weis's mockumentary parodies and pastiches The Beatles with great love and affection with a film that was the forerunner to This Is Spinal Tap and the works of Christopher Guest and co. Next, they jump forward to 2007 with musician extraordinaire Dewey Cox and his incredible rise to fame as one of music's finest troubadours, with hits like Take My Hand, Let Me Hold You Little Man, and Black Sheep. Directed by Jake Kasdan (Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle) and co-written by Kasdan and Jude Apatow, this brilliant satire and spoof of the rock biopic - mainly Walk The Line and Ray - stars John C. Reilly, Jenna Fisher, and Kristen Wiig, as well as some incredible cameos from Elvis Presley and The Beatles, but not as you know them... Be sure to like, subscribe and follow the podcast on your favorite podcast platform, as well as leave us a review with your thoughts on the series so far. In the first installment of what will, over time, serve as a commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the All You Need is Cash TV film, I spoke with director Gary Weis. In addition to his career as a documentary filmmaker, SNL short film creator and music video director, he recalls his work on The Rutles’ long-form “rockumentary,” as well as his interactions with George Harrison throughout his career. [SNL sound clips owned by NBC and Broadway Video] The post 133: Rutles I – A Conversation with Director Gary Weis appeared first on Something About The Beatles.

Time to put your cup of tea to one side, pull up your trousers and return to the wonderful era in an alternate universe when Rutlemania ruled. The film selection for See Hear episode 42 was requested by Barry Knobel, “The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash” released in 1978. The film is (very probably) the first ever mockumentary about the Pre-Fab Four. Monty Python member Eric Idle along with ex Bonzo Dog member Neil Innes devised a TV show sketch featuring a band from another dimension where the more famous Liverpudlians don’t exist. Gary Weis of Saturday Night Live offered Idle the opportunity to give the characters a fully blown film. Wisely, it was made to look like a documentary rather than a narrative piece. Tim, Bernard and Maurice are joined by Rutle fan (and story editor for another of our favourite films, Good Vibrations) Colin McKeown. We discuss the art of parody on one band vs parody of a musical culture, American vs British comedy, Pythons, SNL, attention to detail, song parody, and the disgrace that is tea consumption. We are hugely grateful that Colin took the time to join us. He’s hugely passionate about music and films, so he’s good folks in our books. He also tells us what he’s done in film and what his next very exciting film project is……one that will definitely be of interest to See Hear listeners. We hope this is the first of many appearances on See Hear for Colin. You can download the show by searching for See Hear podcast on iTunes or download from http://seehear.podbean.com/ If you dig what we do, could you please rate us at iTunes or even better, spread the word that the show exists on social media or at real life social gatherings so more folks can tune in. Please join our friendly Facebook discussion group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/seehearpodcast You can send us emails at seehearpodcast@gmail.com to suggest films you'd like us to discuss, give us your thoughts on what we do or anything else music-film related.
