Saturday Night Live is celebrating the big 5-0. Who better to put it in perspective than the Canadian writer who was there at the start. On this special presentation from brioux.tv: the podcast and LateNighter, Rosie Shuster tells how it all began. She was born with a funny bone as the daughter of Frank Shuster (half of the comedy team of Wayne & Shuster). She meets Lorne Michaels at junior high, he falls for Rosie, and Lorne then soaks up every showbiz lesson he can from her dad.  Together with their Toronto school chum Howard Shore, all three land at 30 Rock in New York, assemble the Not Ready for Prime Time Players, put together the next generation of comedy writers (including Rosie) and create the greatest live TV comedy-music showcase ever. Shuster talks about the show that came before, CBC's Hart & Lorne Terrific Hour; writing for Gilda Radner (a joy) and John Belushi (a struggle), getting props from her proud poppa, and her on-again, off-again marriage to Michaels. But will she get a dress in time for two galas in New York, including the three hour SNL50: The Anniversary Special as well as the hour-long red carpet show? Tune in Sunday, Feb. 16, on NBC and Global to find out.

ABOUT TITUS O'NEIL AND WRESTLING WITH FATHERHOOD: My Championship Journey to My Greatest Title: Dad  From the moment Titus O'Neil laid eyes on his first son nearly 20 years ago, he has considered fatherhood his greatest accolade. Neither his decorated college football career, nor a WWE Tag Team Championship, nor his staggering achievements in community service could compare. Having grown up fatherless, O'Neil strived to raise his children in not just his own image but into something greater.   Learning on the fly how to raise two young boys, and later adopting a teenage daughter, O'Neil soon realized that he, like any parent, is far from perfect. Now, as his three children - Titus, T.J., and Leah - become thriving adults, O'Neil shares the details of his humbling successes and failures in parenting so that others may learn from his experiences.   Wrestling with Fatherhood tackles important issues in relatable terms and is loaded with stories and guidance for fathers from all walks of life. No matter the topic, from encouraging emotional intelligence to handling difficult conversations to simply expressing love and affection, you will find anecdotes and advice to enrich the lives of your children and your family's journey together.  WWE BIO  With a giant heart to match his titanic frame, Titus O'Neil is among the most compassionate and hard-working Superstars in all of WWE.   A former WWE Tag Team Champion and the first-ever 24/7 Champion, O'Neil has flattened many a WWE Superstar since emerging in NXT in 2010, and he brings that same determination to his many charity commitments outside the ring. His passion for community and uplifting others inspired him to write his first book, "There's No Such Thing as a Bad Kid: How I Went from Stereotype to Prototype" in 2019.   In addition to being a force in and of himself, this former football player for the University of Florida and the Jacksonville Jaguars knows a thing or two about teamwork. In addition to scoring championship gold alongside Darren Young as The Prime Time Players, Titus was the mastermind behind Titus Worldwide, memorably joining forces with Akira Tozawa, Apollo Crews and Dana Brooke.   A hell of a competitor and a hell of a humanitarian, O'Neil aims to continue to dominate in the ring and inspire others.  ABOUT TITUS O"NEIL  WWE Global Ambassador Titus O'Neil (born Thaddeus Bullard) is a father, philanthropist, and champion of good. Raised in poverty, O'Neil overcame a troubled childhood with help from a caring adult. Today, the Tampa, FL, native lives a life of service, empowering individuals, families, and communities across the world.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/i-am-refocused-radio--2671113/support.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of “Saturday Night Live” – and while many of the “Not Ready for Prime Time Players” have gone on to achieve remarkable careers, few have had as fascinating a journey as Dan Aykroyd's. As the youngest member of the 1975 original cast, Aykroyd quickly became known for his iconic sketches, including parodies of Julia Child and Richard Nixon, the beloved “Two Wild and Crazy Guys,” and the absurd “Bass-o-Matic.” His sketch “The Blues Brothers” not only became a cultural touchstone, but evolved into successful feature films and a live musical act. Aykroyd's talents also extend to behind the camera, as he wrote and starred in the comedy classics “Dragnet,” “Coneheads,” “Spies Like Us” and “Ghostbusters.” Aykroyd's career has earned him numerous accolades, including an Emmy Award and Grammy and Academy Award nominations. He is also an entrepreneur and co-founder of the House of Blues music venues and Crystal Head Vodka. In this conversation, host Alec Baldwin speaks with Aykroyd about the early days of “SNL,” the evolution of his career into music and dramatic roles, and how his upbringing helped shape the creation of “Ghostbusters.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd were at the forefront of American comedy in the late 1970s and early '80s. Emerging from The Second City, they both joined the original cast of the Not Ready for Prime Time Players as Saturday Night Live was being formed in 1975. On that show, they helped redefine television comedy and ushered in a new era of revolutionary satire. By 1979, they had a #1 hit record with their band, The Blues Brothers, and a year later, they released a motion picture about the characters, which became a major box office success.Daniel de Vise chronicles the lives and careers of both Aykroyd and Belushi in his recent biography, The Blues Brothers: An Epic Friendship, the Rise of Improv, and the Making of an American Film Classic. Beginning with their childhoods, the book recounts their individual comedic beginnings, explores the friendship they forged, details their joint rise to comic stardom, and culminates in an in-depth look at the making of this comedy classic.Daniel joins us to discuss not only John and Dan but also to share stories about his research and writing process. We delve into their iconic roles and the legacy of both performers—as well as that of Jake and Elwood—helping to cement what makes these two comedic legends truly unforgettable.Listen till the very end to hear how you can win an autographed copy of Daniel's book,The Blues Brothers: An Epic Friendship, the Rise of Improv, and the Making of an American Film Classic! You can also purchase a copy of here!---------------------------------Subscribe today!Follow us on social media: X (Twitter): NotReady4PTPodInstagram: notready4ptpodFacebook: The Not Ready for Prime Time PodcastContact Us: Website: https://www.notready4ptpod.comEmail: notready4ptpod@gmail.com

Somebody who was there, however, is my guest this week on brioux.tv the podcast: Lorraine Santoli. No, she was never one of the "Not Ready from Prime Time Players." Lorraine, who worked at NBC, was on the floor, pulling cables for the camera operators during the broadcast. Lorraine went on to a spectacular career in entertainment. When we met 40 years ago in California, she was the main Disneyland publicist. Thanks to Lorraine, I had a backstage pass to a time when it was still possible to interview Roy Disney, animators Ward Kimball, Ken Anderson and Bill Justice and voice artists such as Jimmy Macdonald.Meanwhile, Lorraine became close friends with original Mouseketeers Annette Funicello and Bobby Burgess, among others. SEASON 2 - EPISODE TWENTY TWO - Elimination Chamber 2015A new concept in wrestling is difficult to come up with. In 2002 on the back of the attitude era and the death of any real competition, the WWE created the Elimination Chamber. Four chambers, six competitors and a whole new way of deciding titles, contenders and feuds. Like any concept be it the Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania, Ladder Matches and the like, there will always be ups and downs. By 2015 the Chamber had its own ppv, but strangely this ppv had been moved to May, and with no real need for elimination chamber matches that year, the decision was made to throw in the IC and Tag Team Titles. A chamber event with the Los Matadores, Ryback, Prime Time Players all popping out the pods was always going to be a hard sell, but man oh man, we haven't scratched the surfce of this awful event! His professional wrestling career began when he was part of the second season of NXT and also competed on the show's fifth season, NXT Redemption. By 1978 New York was changing - The city was broke - Billy Martin got fired - Studio 54 was making more money than the mafia. While down at Studio 8H things were changing for our “Not Ready For Prime Time Players” - in fact they weren't even called that anymore, as the show that had started just 3 years earlier was now the launching pad for some of Hollywood's biggest and most bankable stars like Chevy Chase, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. Even superstar acts like The Rolling Stones used Saturday Night Live to reinvent themselves as the 1970's were coming to a close.  Season 4 while not the final year of the golden age of SNL would prove to be our last with most of the cast together - after Season 4 this group would never again work together - no more Tuesday all-nighters, no more after parties, no more Blues Bar, no more living on couches - after Season 4 things would never be the same again.  So, let's take the trip together one last time to the Olympia Cafe, a final visit with the Festrunk Bros, The Bees, one more infomercial from Ron Co, and of course sayonara Samurai Futaba.  The bright lights are calling so it's time to sit back and relax Mom and Dad won't be back for at least an hour and Welcome To The Latch Key Kids Present “Ready For Prime Time Players Part VIII - The Pepsi Syndrome”

From the golden age of SNL one man transcended the writing room, the stage, the silver screen, the recording studio, and the egos.  One man was able to; for the most part not only avoid self-destruction but put his friendship and sanity on the line to help others as they were spiraling out of control.  One man was able to parlay his lizard brain and high intellect into a career that has spanned seven decades and has taken him from the back alleys and speak easy's of Ottawa all the way to the Academy Awards - Of course that man is Fred Garvin Male Prostitute or his more recognizable name Dan Aykroyd.  Did you know Aykroyd played drums for Muddy Waters, starred alongside John Candy in a popular Canadian TV show while simultaneously working on SNL, and started not one but two multi-million dollar businesses that give back to the communities they serve? There is a reason we here at The Latch Key Kids call him “The Real Genius” let's find out why together because it's time to sit back and relax Mom & Dad won't be back for at least an hour and Welcome To The Latch Key Kids Presents “Ready For Prime Time Players Part VII: It Just Popped In There”

By the Fall of 1977 New York City had emerged from the Summer of Sam, Studio 54 was opened wide, and Reggie Jackson was about to become Mr. October.  Meanwhile at Studio 8H the die had been cast after a remarkable first two seasons of what was now officially called Saturday Night Live and what a difference two years makes - the show that couldn't get some affiliates to even carry the show in October of ‘75 was pulling down close to a 40 share in the ratings meaning that in 1977 and 1978 an unprecedented 4 out of 10 TV sets were tuning in to the Not Ready For Prime Time Players every Saturday Night.  From the Check Brothers to Samurai Night Fever to Nick Winters singing Star Wars…even OJ - season 3 would have it all and then some - oh yeah even the return of Chevy Chase…I'm sure that went off without a hitch.  So, grab your bell bottoms and final net hairspray..Because It's Time To Sit Back And Relax Mom And Dad Won't Be Back For At Least An Hour And Welcome To The Latch Key Kids Present: “Ready For Prime Time Players Part VI: Cheeseburger Cheeseburger Cheeseburger”

Episode 81 and Wendi and Dfernando's guest interview is actress, author, writer, producer, and activist Mimi Kennedy.Born in Rochester, NY, Mimi first fell in love with acting as a child in community theater, which would lead her to ignite her acting career on stage opposite TV legend Sid Caesar in Neil Simon's LAST OF THE RED HOT LOVERS along with multi-Emmy Award winner Doris Roberts, who became a friend and mentor.Mimi was active in the NYC theatre scene in the 1970's, cast in plays like Jim Steinman's DAS RHEINGOLD and Andy Warhol's legendary PORK – a role she left due to reasons recounted in her 1996 mid-life memoir TAKEN TO THE STAGE: The Education of an Actress (soon to be released as an audiobook on Audible).  Steinman would become a life-long friend and Warhol, at least in her case, would be proven wrong about his “15 minutes of fame” quote.  In 1976 Mimi made her Broadway debut as one of the Pink Ladies: Jan, in the original Broadway run of the legendary musical GREASE.  She was also a member of the original touring production of THE NATIONAL LAMPOON SHOW.In 1975 Mimi was invited to audition for the original cast (The Not Ready for Prime Time Players) of a brand-new late-night NBC TV sketch comedy-variety series SATURDAY NIGHT (later known as SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE), but Lorne Michaels decided on casting Jane Curtin for that spot.    Her stage career did not end when Hollywood and television came calling shortly after. She has performed the 1-woman play about newspaper advice columnist Ann Landers, THE LADY WITH ALL THE ANSWERS, at both the Pasadena and Cleveland Playhouses. In 2013 she wrote and starred in a 1-woman play about suffragist and abolitionist Matilda Joslyn Gage, MIMI KENNEDY FINDS MATILDA JOSLYN GAGE.For 8 seasons Mimi portrayed the much beloved character, Marjorie, on the hit Chuck Lorre CBS TV sitcom MOM. She garnered a Critics Choice Award nomination for Best Guest Performer in a Comedy Series before becoming a series regular in Season 2.  This was the second pairing of Mimi and Lorre; she played Abby O'Neil on the hit 90's ABC TV sitcom DHARMA & GREG for 5 seasons. Her television debut was on the 1977 NBC TV musical-variety mini-series 3 GIRLS 3, also starring dance legend Debbie  Allen, and Ellen Foley. The New York Times declared it a hit, however it sadly only aired 4 episodes. You can view all 4 episodes on Mimi's YouTube channel. 3 GIRLS 3 was quite an introduction to Hollywood allowing her the opportunity to play opposite Bob Hope, Carl Reiner, Flip Wilson, and Steve Martin (in his prime-time TV debut.) Regular TV sitcom series roles followed throughout the 70's and 80's, most notably as Stockard Channing's sister on the CBS TV sitcom JUST FRIENDS, and  co-starring with comedy legend Peter Cook in THE TWO OF US.  The 1990's started with Mimi in a dramatic role portraying a slightly darker side of the affluent WASP-type she had portrayed on sitcoms previously. As Queen-B Ruth Sloan on HOMEFRONT, she netted another American Television Critics nomination, this time as Best Supporting Actress in a Drama. In the 2000's she recurred as CIA Director and House Minority Leader in HBO's THE BRINK and VEEP, respectively. Upcoming television guest roles in 2022 include Netflix's GRACE & FRANKIE, and the long-running ABC TV sitcom THE GOLDBERGS, as well as a new character on a popular drama series.Mimi's most notable roles on film include: Woody Allen's Oscar winning MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, IN THE LOOP, the Oscar winning ERIN BROCKOVICH, PUMP UP THE VOLUME, MAN IN THE CHAIR, THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT, SAVING PARADISE, the recent Tony Hale comedy EAT WHEATIES!, and the upcoming GOING PLACES.The experience of attending and graduating from Smith College during the Vietnam War era (with Julie Nixon as a classmate) exposed Mimi to new ideas and perspectives. The seeds of an activist and world citizen were born.  Nonviolence is her core political principle, learned in weekly classes after 9/11 taught by Rev. James Lawson, whom Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called “the teacher” for his educating activists in nonviolent theory and practice at the start of the civil rights struggle in the 1960s.  Mimi was the founding Advisory Board Chair of Progressive Democrats of America in 2004 and remains on its National Board in a leadership role on the Election Integrity Team.  Her work in Election Integrity is nationally recognized, from Capitol Hill to LA County; where she served on the Advisory Panel for LA's new paper-ballot voting system.  Her 1-woman play about 19th century suffragist Matilda Joslyn Gage wove the spiritual and political activism of Gage with today's need for reproductive justice and conscious parenting.  She was proud to stand with the MOM cast and producers in donating the show's 2017 Emmy budget to Planned Parenthood.  Mimi and the PDA were instrumental in convincing Bernie Sanders to run in the 2016 Democratic Presidential primary; hosting Sanders' first LA fundraiser in her home. She has also worked with the Office of the Americas against the covert wars in Central America and Artists United to Win Without War.Mimi lives in Los Angeles, CA with her husband of over 40 years, actor, educator, and musician Larry Dilg. They have two grown children, two grandchildren and an adorable dog. Also on Episode 81, Dfernando and Wendi are back and touch on things that occurred during their time off: Dfernando's 57th and Greg Covey's 52nd birthdays; Wendi's gift of a week's worth of Magnolia Bakery Banana Pudding and pizza; Wendi's new article in NEW BEAUTY Magazine, which includes various photos from their first photo shoot together (one which includes Wendi wearing one of Bob Fosse's own bowler hats); and Wendi talks about her time in Vancouver where she filmed the new Disney Plus film PROM PACT. On THE RIPE REPORT, Dfernando talks about the new Netflix cake-baking competition show IS IT CAKE?, hosted by SNL's Mikey Day, and Wendi shares a new discovery: Uncle Tetsu Japanese Cheesecake and shares a ROTTEN: celebrities licking faces on the red carpet at awards shows.  Watch Wendi and Dfernando and their TEAM GENERATION RIPE: Greg Covey, Shelley McLendon and Ponciana Badia on Season 7 Episode 2 of CELEBRITY FAMILY FEUD - now on ABC OnDemand and Hulu and on the GENERATION RIPE website.  Follow us on our Instagram:Wendi McLendon-CoveyDfernando ZarembaGENERATION RIPE... and our guest Mimi Kennedy, her Twitter, her TikTok, her Facebook, and her YouTube Channel. Remember to subscribe to GENERATION RIPEAnd rate & leave us a review by clicking HERE!Visit Dfernando Zaremba's website: dfernandozaremba.com

March 5, 2022, marked the 40th anniversary of the death of John Belushi.  In many ways and for many people, especially those who loved him, his death served as a wakeup call to the dangers of a lifestyle where there were no holds barred, no limits too far, and no high to be left behind.  However, when looking back from our perch here in the 21st century, it's clear that what we lost on that morning in the shadow of the Chateau Mormont, was much more than a comedian.  We lost a force of nature - a dynamo - a fearless performer who was just scratching the surface of an immense reservoir of talent that went far beyond the Ray Ban sunglasses of Jake Blues, or the child like antics of John Blutarsky, or even the street wise disposition of Ernie Souchak.  We lost a prime example of America -  where the son of a hard working Albanian restauranteur rose up and conquered the world of Television, Movies, and Music when in 1978 he could claim the most watched Television show in Saturday Night Live, the #1 album with “The Blues Brothers - Briefcase Full Of Blues”, and up until that point the highest grossing comedy movie of all time ‘National Lampoon's Animal House'.  What John Belushi meant to his generation and beyond is hard to quantify, sort of like the Theory of Relativity, most be people can't explain it…all you know is that it's hard to imagine a world without it or without him.  So, let's go on that roller coaster together because…It's time to sit back and relax Mom and Dad won't be back for at least an hour and Welcome To The Latch Key Kids Presents “Ready For Prime Time Players Part V: We're On A Mission From God”

On May 17, 1976, in Los Angeles at the 28th Prime Time Emmy Awards hosted by John Denver and Mary Tyler Moore something amazing happened….NBC's Saturday Night took home the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy / Variety or Music Series beating out the legendary Carol Burnett for the award.  This would be the first of their 86 Prime Time Emmys with over 252 nominations as of this recording - a record that will likely never be broken.  Yet storm clouds were on the horizon and not just for our Not Ready For Prime Time Players but for the world.  Yet over the summer some of our players vacationed together at The Joshua Tree Hotel to celebrate their championship season - not knowing that in a short amount of time their #1 star from that first season would be staying out west and they would be in search of a replacement as well as a new name for the show…Yet as one star faded another brighter star would emerge and that star would quickly take Season 2 of the newly titled Saturday Night Live into the stratosphere and all of us would come along for the ride.  The reign of John Belushi was about to begin! So, it's time to sit back and relax Mom and Dad won't be back for at least an hour and Welcome To The Latch Key Kids Presents “Ready For Prime Time Players Part IV: Feelin' Alright”

July 1976 was a busy month in New York City. The United States was in the midst of not only celebrating its highly marketed bi-centennial, but it was also in the middle of figuring out who was going to run the country in its 201st year.  Was it going to be the man from Plains, Georgia - Governor Jimmy Carter who was just nominated earlier in July at New York City's Madison Square Garden, or was it going to be the up until now unelected 38th President Gerald Ford or perhaps even the one time B movie actor and two time Governor of California Ronald Regan?  On July 31st by the time Kris Kristofferson signed off as the final host for season one of the runaway new hit NBC's Saturday Night one thing was crystal clear - Chevy Chase was leaving it all behind and heading West.  Chase was setting off on a pioneering trail becoming the first in a long line of talented SNL stars to exit Studio 8H for that neighborhood in the heart of Los Angeles - Hollywood.  And what if I told you it was all for a girl?  So, it's time to sit back and relax Mom and Dad won't be back for at least an hour and Welcome To The Latch Key Kids Presents “Ready For Prime Time Players Part III: It's A Quest….A Quest For Fun”

Between Christmas 1983 and Christmas 1989 three movies would be released staring four of our original five “Ready For Prime Time” actors, all five of these actors came from the “Not Ready For Prime Time Players” lineup over the first five seasons of the groundbreaking show Saturday Night Live.  Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, and Eddie Murphy would come to define not only the comedy of a generation, but a certain level of consciousness.  An entire generation has identified with their tag lines, one liners, and impressions for the better part of 50 years.  Over the course of this season The Latch Key Kids will explore just how much these five actors have meant to the generation that remembers staying up really late on Saturday Nights and to the generations that have now grown up in a pop culture world these actors helped create.  We will discuss the show that simultaneously brought them all together and helped break them all apart.  Yet over the many years that followed SNL many of these actors would find themselves in each other's orbits, some quite frequently, and for one actor in particular his orbit would be so large that even now close to 40 years after his death we are still starstruck.  Three movies – 1983's ‘Trading Places', 1988's ‘Scrooged', and 1989's ‘National Lampoon's: Christmas Vacation' combined four of our principal five players and in so doing changed Christmas forever.  And while John Belushi is not in any of these movies his influence and impact are crystal clear.  So, we will kick off our season by coming home for the holidays….       Because it's time to sit back and relax….Mom and Dad won't be back for at least an hour and Welcome to The Latch Key Kids Present “Ready For Prime Time Players Part I: Home For The Holidays”.
