Hello Therese, we're back for our annual holiday extravaganza. This year we're movie-clubbing Todd Haynes' very luscious and very gay Carol (2015), starring Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, and Sarah Paulson. We discuss the erotic imagery of merely a glove, lesbian sex scenes through the lens of a gay man, and the joy in watching flat male characters (what even IS Jake Lacy's character's name?). All that Carol talk for you plus our reactions to the Golden Globe nominations, our dream casting of Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Emma Stone as Pearl Bailey and Carol Channing in a future film, and some Muppet talk. And then…we give you a solid ten minutes on our theory that gay men hate all gay male things while lesbians are much more accepting, our trip down memory lane to remember “lesbian kiss episodes” during November sweeps, the legacy of Roseanne, and Natalie Zea hunting down Kimberly Pierce for the Boys Don't Cry short she starred in!  Anyway, happy holidays! It's Pride! And what better way to dive into it than revisiting culturally relevant, trailblazing -- and traumatic -- movies about the LGBTQ+ community. This week we welcome artist, urban planner, activist, and host of the Fruta Fresca podcast, Jose Richard Aviles to talk about the film Boys Don't Cry directed by Kimberly Peirce and starring Hilary Swank, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of the real-life trans man Brandon Teena and his murder in Nebraska in 1993. They had lots to say about this very poignant -- but very problematic film for 2023. Released in 1999, Boys Don't Cry was a watershed moment for queer representation -- but we know that it hasn't aged well. Aviles and Dino-Ray Ramos navigate through this film with critical thinking, but most of all, with empathy. It's a tragic story and to see that translated on screen brings about a lot of risks in representation and makes space for toxicity and violence. Watching Boys Don't Cry in 2023 is like walking through a landmine of harmful and hard to watch portrayal of trans people as well as much-needed queer representation we have never seen in 1999. DISCLAIMER: Some topics we discuss may be triggering and difficult to hear. === Problematic Fave is presented by DIASPORA and is created, hosted and produced by Dino-Ray Ramos. The series is also produced by Sanjay Sharma of Marginal MediaWorks and edited by Brian Aguilar. Filmmaker Kimberly Peirce talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about her award-winning film “Boys Don't Cry” that was featured on the second season of Turner Classic Movies series “Reframed”. “Reframed” addresses famous/classic films that may have been controversial when they were released due to their themes like homophobia, misogyny, racism etc. The series that aired throughout November also took a look at pioneering LGBTQ films from an historical perspective. Each film is shown along with a discussion from film experts about these issues. Peirce co-hosted the show with Ben Mankiewicz who engaged in a conversation about how this 1999 breakthrough film raised awareness to the lives of our transgender community and the discrimination they faced that unfortunately continues today. “Boys Don't Cry” was directed by Kimberly and co-written by Peirce and Andy Bienen. The film is a dramatization of the real-life story of Brandon Teena played by actress Hilary Swank who won a Best Actress Oscar for her performance. The story is about a trans man who attempts to find love in Nebraska but falls victim to a brutal hate crime perpetrated by two male acquaintances. The film co-stars Chloë Sevigny who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress as Teena's girlfriend Lana Tisdel. We talked to Kimberly about what she hopes to accomplish with her work and her spin on our LGBTQ issues.  Kimberly Peirce received a BA from the University of Chicago and an MFA from Columbia University Graduate Film. She also graduated from Sundance Institute's Writing, Directing & Producing Labs. Her unflinching debut feature “Boys Don't Cry” earned numerous honors and was inducted into the Library of Congress as a National Treasure in 2020. Her second feature “Stop-Loss” was released by Paramount Pictures in 2008. In 2013 she directed a remake of the horror film “Carrie”. Kimberly is a Governor of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and a National Board member of the Directors Guild of America. This podcast covers New Girl Season 2, Episode 13, A Father's Love, which originally aired on January 15, 2013 and was directed by Jake Kasdan and written by Berkley Johnson and Josh Malmuth. Here's a quick recap of the episode:Nick is surprised when his father shows up for an unexpected visit and Jess finds out that he's a con man when hilarity ensues at a horse race track. Meanwhile, Schmidt runs into Robby and both try to win Cece back. We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Kalinka - When Nick and his dad were being confronted by the Russian horse dealers, the Russians started singing the Russian folk tune, Kalinka.Sugar Ray [Leonard] / Sugar Ray [Robinson] - The con Nick did as a kid was called the Sugar Ray, where he would pretend to be a diabetic kid.Additional Pop Culture References such as:Chicago Bulls (“Chica Go Bills”) - The hats Walt tried to get Nick and Winston to sell as kids didn't say “Chicago Bulls”, but instead said “Chica Go Bills”. The Chicago Bulls are an American professional basketball team based in Chicago. The Bulls compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league's Eastern Conference Central Division. The Music Man - Professor Harold Hill from The Music Man used the scheme of "Fake trombones for a fake band" like Jess references when she learns that Walt is a con man. The Music Man is a 1962 American musical film based on Meredith Willson's 1957 Broadway musical of the same name. The premise is that Harold Hill poses as a boys' band leader to con naïve Iowa townsfolk.Uncle Buck - When Jess is trying to sell the horse, she exclaims, “Damn it, Uncle Buck! This horse will never race again.” Uncle Buck is a 1989 American comedy film written and directed by John Hughes and starred John Candy as Uncle Buck, a bachelor and all-around-slob who babysits his brother's rebellious teenage daughter and her younger brother and sister. When Schmidt is bummed he never got Cece to wear a sari for sexual reasons, he spoofed a few movie scenarios in his head:Monsoon Wedding - Monsoon Wedding is a 2001 Indian comedy-drama film that depicts romantic entanglements during a traditional Punjabi Hindu wedding in Delhi. Although it is set entirely in New Delhi, the film was an international co-production between companies in India, the United States, Italy, France, and Germany.Slumdog Millionaire - Slumdog Millionaire is a 2008 British drama film that is a loose adaptation of the novel Q & A by Indian author Vikas Swarup, telling the story of 18-year-old Jamal Malik from the Juhu slums of Mumbai reflecting on his life after being accused of cheating on the Indian version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?".The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a 2011 British comedy-drama film based on the novel These Foolish Things by Deborah Moggach, and features a group of British pensioners moving to a retirement hotel in India, run by a young and eager man.Hilary Swank - Jess says Nick seems like Hilary Swank mixed with a wet dog when he was nervous about lying. Hilary Ann Swank is an American actress and film producer. She began acting in 1992 and came to international recognition in the early 2000s for her performances as Brandon Teena, a trans man, in Kimberly Peirce's Boys Don't Cry, and as Maggie Fitzgerald, an aspiring boxer, in Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby. When Schmidt and Robby were brainstorming a plan to get Cece back they referenced:Ocean's Twelve / Brad Pitt - Ocean's Twelve is an American heist comedy film and is the second installment of the Ocean's franchise. William Bradley [Brad] Pitt is an American actor and film producer who received multiple accolades including: two Golden Globe Awards and an Academy Award for his acting, and another Academy Award, another Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award as a producer.Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a 1969 American Western film based loosely on fact, telling the story of Wild West outlaws Robert LeRoy Parker, known as Butch Cassidy, and his partner Harry Longabaugh, the "Sundance Kid" who are two con men on the run. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was selected by the American Film Institute as the 7th-greatest Western of all time in 2008.We also cover Robby and Schmidt's conversation about elephants as our “Schmidtism” this episode. For our “not in the 2020s” we discuss Schmidt and Robby crashing Cece's house, how they exclaimed ‘white guy power', and their lack of sensitivity for others' cultures. Our “yes in the 2020s” covers Schmidt and Robby's friendship. We also give a brief look into Dennis Farina (Walt), Stone Eisenmann (Young Nick), and Jordan Fuller (Young Winston), the guest stars of this episode. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Nelson Franklin (Robby - Previously discussed in S2E1), Pasha D. Lychnikoff (Buyer #1), Ivo Nandi (Buyer #2), Nick Vallelonga (Owner), Cris D'Annunzio (Dusty), Mona Sishodia (Pavun's aunt), Juliocesar Chavez (Kid), Sunit Gupta (Pavun's Father), Thushari Jayasekera (Pavun's cousin), and Andy Kimbel (Race Fan).We also discuss how the character Pavun Shetty is played by himself and he was a producer on New Girl, how Nick's room has a picture of Jimmy Croche in it, and how the glass of orange juice that Schmidt knocks over while stalking Cece is upright when he talks to Robby later. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:(Vice President) Joe Biden - In this episode, Nick mentions that one of the people he'd want to be unpredictable is Vice President Joe Biden. Joseph Biden Jr. was born in 1942 and served as the 47th Vice President of the United States from 2009 to 2017 under President Barack Obama. He was also elected the 46th President of the United States in 2021. Prior to his time as a Vice President he was also the Delaware Senator for 36 years, being sworn in just after he turned 30.Sari - When Cece is meeting with Pavun's family, she's wearing a sari which makes Schmidt upset. A sari is an article of clothing, traditionally from the Indian subcontinent that is wrapped around the waist with one end around the shoulder. There are many styles of wearing the sari and most are worn with a blouse and an under-skirt called a petticoat.Throughout the episode Schmidt and Robby circled through multiple ideas on how to get Cece back including the following:Trojan horse - This is a reference to the wooden horse used by the Greeks to enter Troy and win the Trojan War by sneaking inside and destroying the city. Since, it has metaphorically been used to mean any trick that invites the target to invite their enemy into a secure location that they are in.Buying a Star - Although there are a number of registries that allow you to buy and name a star which results in a certificate with the star's name, no astronomer or observatory will refer to the star by the name you purchased as this is more of a novelty gift.United States Navy Ball - The “Naval Officers' Ball” that Robby mentioned is an annual celebratory ball recognizing the birthday of the United States Navy, which was signed into order on October 13, 1775. During the Ball, there is also a keynote speech, dinner and desserts, a cake cutting ceremony, official toasts from high level officers, and even musical performances. This episode got a 7.5/10 Rating from Kritika whose favorite character was Nick and Kelly rated this episode a 7.5/10 and her favorite character was Jess! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 14!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/

We were absolutely giddy talking to Natalie about cutting her teeth on the wacky soap Passions, how she convinced the Hollywood powers-that-be that she was a gifted comedic player, and maybe most importantly, we dug into Natalie’s first role as Lana Tisdale in Kimberly Peirce’s unreleased short, Boys Don’t Cry, which would go on to inspire the feature film. Conversations with Judy Greer on December 10, 2012. Moderated by Richard Ridge, Broadway World. Judy Greer consistently captivates both critics and audiences with her engaging performances. She is one of the most prolific actresses of her time, appearing in 80 roles across film and television to date. She is currently making her Broadway debut alongside Katie Holmes and Norbert Leo Butz in the Broadway show "Dead Accounts" by Theresa Rebeck. "Dead Accounts"is the story of a brother, a sister, and a surprise reunion that turns their family upside down. A $27 million secret proves that the truth can be complicated. Greer is also currently starring in her own Yahoo! series called "Reluctantly Healthy," which she started in December of 2011. Each week this webisode gives special tips and advice on how to stay healthy while on-the go, working long hours, and traveling away from home. Greer just wrapped production on the remake of the 1976 film, "Carrie," directed by Kimberly Peirce. She will star as Miss Desjardin, the gym teacher, alongside Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne More. She will also return voicing 'Cheryl' on the fourth season of FX's animated hit series "Archer," which became an instant cult classic after its television debut in 2010. The show comes back this January. She's also currently in production on "Arrested Development" in which she is reprising her role as Kitty Sanchez, George Bluth's (Jeffrey Tambor) assistant/girlfriend, in the fourth season. Greer was most recently seen in Alexander Payne's "The Descendants" opposite George Clooney. The Academy Award® nominated film centers around attorney 'Matt King' (Clooney), who learns, after his wife suffers a boating accident and winds up in a coma, that she'd been having an affair with local real estate broker 'Brian Speer' (Matthew Lillard). Greer has received critical acclaim for her supporting role in the film, garnering solo nominations from both the Satellite Awards and the Denver Film Critics Society, in addition to being nominated as part of the ensemble cast for a Gotham Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Broadcast Film Critics Association Critics Choice Award. This year, Greer has also starred opposite Ed Helms, Jason Segel, and Susan Sarandon in "Jeff, Who Lives at Home" for directors Jay and Mark Duplass. Greer will then be seen in screenwriter Robbie Fox's "Playing the Field," for director Gabriele Muccino opposite Gerard Butler, Jessica Biel, Uma Thurman, Dennis Quaid, and Catherine Zeta Jones. In the comedy, which follows former professional athlete George' (Butler) after he agrees to coach his son's soccer team only to find himself fending off the romantic advances of his players' mothers, Greer stars as recent divorcee Barb,' one of George's' many pursuers. FilmDistrict will release the film December 25, 2012.

Stephen King's first novel became his first book to film adaptation. Brian De Palma's version of Carrie (1976) stands as a horror classic and even earned Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie Oscar nominations in a rare tip of the hat to the genre. It speaks the strength of the material and the quality of talent involved in the film. Kimberly Peirce's remake starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore didn't strike the same cord in 2013 as the original, but does it deserve the criticism?
