It's November 2023, and the world's most successful compilation series is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Five decades of compiling the latest hits, the occasional miss, but always the songs that soundtracked our lives. Always there, always democratically and expertly sequencing the music that the UK buying (downloading/streaming/swiping) public were grooving to, laughing to, dancing along with, or crying about (add in your own band or artists here). What else is still with us from 1983? And still having such an impact?Breakfast Time? Well, certainly not Frank Bough. The Ford Sierra? Taxi!£1 coins? Down the back of the sofa.Kajagoogoo? Hush hush, as they say. (One for the older listeners)So, as our friends at NOW rightly celebrate the past through a stunning array of special albums and even see podcasters pop up across several TV programmes waxing lyrically about the famous compilation series (well, no-one else will talk about it, will they?) the numbered series that started it all in November 1983 continued to do exactly what it set out to do; bring together the songs of NOW.Perhaps no longer just the Top Chart Hits, that tag line that emblazoned the front cover of earlier volumes, but now taking into account the various ways we actually DO consume music in the third decade of the 21st century.NOW 116 - The Best of the Best.47 tracks. Tik Tok stars, Film soundtrack anthems, legendary decade surviving artists. Pop, rock, dance, soul. All present and correct, all breathlessly exciting, all taking that snapshot in time of pop culture. And as we know, an invaluable window into the soundtrack of our lives.Where, indeed, Agnetha, do we go from here?To understand the past and the future, we always need to be in the NOW. (Take a note of that line, its a good one: Ed)And joining me to make sense of this dazzling volume of the world famous compilation series is award winning writer, journalist and NOW fan David Quantick.David explains why he wanted to get in 'at the deep end' and why he thinks that NOW116 highlights that pop is in a fine healthy state in. We explore what actually is a 'hit' in 2023/24, why short songs are always an indication of great songs, why NOW continues to keep getting it right and how the compilation series is Top Of The Pops in exile.Along the way, discover who David describes as 'the Dr. Who of Pop', who are 'The Strokes for Queen fans (or was that the other way around)' and what a bad AI version of George Michael may look (and sound) like. We also revisit why Pop continues to Eat Itself (yes, David came up with that one!), why the female artists are leaving the boys behind, who the 'ASDA Madonna' is and who the real Madonna is. And did Chris Lowe really offer Tracey Chapman a lift in 1988?We really do (watch what I do here) Paint The Town Red!Jump in, buckle up and remind yourself why pop is still very, very important. Welcome to the podcast for alpaca people!Observations from the Alpaca Farm: Morning Rituals and Seasonal ChangesIn this episode of the Alpaca Tribe podcast, host Steve Hetherington talks through his routines and experiences on an early, frosty morning. Steve shares his breakfast feeding routine with the alpacas, contemplates the weight of the feed bag and reflects on the peculiarities of the day, warning listeners about life's unexpected abnormalities. Steve revels in the seasonal changes, namely, the cold weather and frost, which he appreciates for their role in curbing parasites. He comments on the ascetic details of being out on a quiet, cold, frosty farm, and the peculiar behaviours of the alpacas, the birds, and a resident swan. Steve also emphasizes the importance of being observant, and asks listeners to reflect on what they notice in their surroundings, and how that affects their actions. The podcast wraps up with some pointers about seasonal preparation and maintenance to face the winter, including looking after running repairs, feeds, and fences. Wendy Mitchell is quite simply one of the most impressive people I have ever met. Diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease nine years ago at the age of 58, after an initial slump into depression, Wendy has since devoted her time and precious energy to raising awareness of dementia, frequently appearing on our broadcast media – she's a familiar face on the Breakfast Time sofas – and speaking at major conferences. Wendy's blog, Which Me Am I Today remains one of my favourite reads and, in writing it, she's created her own paper memory, something that has enabled her to produce two Sunday Times best-selling books about dementia, Somebody I Used to Know and What I Wish People Knew About Dementia – both written in collaboration with journalist Anna Wharton. This summer, Wendy's third book, One Last Thing, was published to great acclaim. As with all Wendy's writings, it comes from the heart and is honest, insightful and highly readable. Which, given its subject matter, is no mean feat. For One Last Thing deals with that most feared of subjects: death and dying. Though, as Wendy says herself, since her dementia diagnosis, she doesn't fear anything anymore, including death. In her book Wendy turns her mind to the serious matter of her future – which, as it does for all of us, involves her death – in order that she may fully appreciate living now. She explores this knotty, difficult topic through conversations with different people, including friends living with dementia and experts in various aspects of end of life, such as the legal practicalities and medical choices here in the UK.Often, she turns the spotlight onto herself: “As dementia dilutes my personhood,” she writes, “I cling to those things that make me who I am – a mum, a blogger, a walker and a photographer. For me, once those parts of me have been taken by this cruel disease, I'll have lost my personhood and would prefer death to an existence of snapshots of joy, as the time spent in confusion would far outnumber those moments”. Useful contacts:Wendy's blog can be found at https://whichmeamitoday.wordpress.com/ and her latest book, One Last Thing, How to Live With The End In Mind, published by Bloomsbury, is available on AmazonDiscover more about advance care planning advocate Clare Fuller and her services at https://speakforme.co.uk/My Future Care Handbook, an interactive book that helps people plan for later life: https://myfuturecare.org/ Hosted on Acast. Bible Reading: 2 Timothy 3:14-17 I wish we didn't have family devotions right after breakfast every day, thought Jordyn. She especially wished she could skip them on days when she was late getting downstairs and had to wait till after devotions to eat breakfast--and that happened quite often. One day when she was late, she decided to ask about it."How come we have to do this every single day--even when I'm really busy?" she asked when Dad ended his prayer. Instead of answering her question right away, Dad picked up the cereal box and held it out toward her. Before she could take it, he pulled it back. "Ohmaybe you don't want breakfast today," he said."Of course I do!" Jordyn exclaimed. "I'm starving!""I see." Dad handed her the cereal. "Well, I don't suppose you'll be eating lunch today, will you?" Jordyn looked at him in surprise. "Why wouldn't I? You know I always take a lunch to school or eat in the cafeteria.""Oh, that's right. Well, what about dinner?" Dad asked. "Do you plan to eat dinner today too?""Dad!" Jordyn was beginning to get irritated. "Why are you asking all these questions? You know I always eat all my meals, including dinner.""Yes, I know you always have in the past," Dad said, "but don't you think it might be a good idea to give up eating on busy days?""Give up eating?" Jordyn repeated, pouring milk onto her cereal. "When I'm busy, I need food even more than when I don't have much to do. We talked about that in health class. So why are you" Suddenly she stopped. "Oh," she said slowly, "you're trying to tell me I need a time of devotions on busy days too, aren't you?""Yes," Dad said with a smile. "Perhaps it's even more important on busy days. Spending time with Jesus and reading His Word is like getting spiritual food. We need Him to nourish us with His love and grace each day. Don't you agree?"Buttering a piece of toast, Jordyn nodded. "I'll be on time for devotions tomorrow," she said before taking a bite. Ruth I. JayHow About You?Do you skip meals when you're busy? Probably not--you need to eat to keep up your strength and energy. How about food for your soul? Jesus offers us spiritual food in His Word, the Bible. When we spend time reading what He has to say to us and talking to Him, He nourishes us and reminds us of His love. Find a time that works well for you and spend time with Him each day. Today's Key Verse:Jesus [said], "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.'" (NKJV) (Luke 4:4)Today's Key Thought:Spend time with Jesus each day

GamerDude has always loved breakfast. When he was a kid, he ate mostly cereal, and he loved the different kinds of sugary cereals all kids love, even though his mom didn't buy them very often. He craved the Sugar Smacks, Sugar Corn Pops, and Sugar Frosted Flakes, but usually had to settle for Rice Krispies, Corn Flakes, and the various Chex cereals. He also enjoyed Shredded Wheat, especially after his dad taught him how to make warm shredded wheat. He also liked hot cereal, from oatmeal, to Cream of Wheat, and once again, his dad taught him a way to eat oatmeal that made it delicious. GamerDude also talks about his love of Grape Nuts cereal, and how it actually helped transition him to a love of granola. He also talks about his mom's famous recipe for "Eggs on Toast," which was nothing more than scrambled eggs on toast, and how she introduced him to scrambled egg sandwiches. Because she usually made those for lunch, it was normal to GamerDude to eat eggs and toast at pretty much any time. He also talks about his grandmother's bacon, and how nothing compared with it. GamerDude explains how he was introduced to all of the other breakfast foods, like waffles, French toast, pancakes, and sausage, when he went away to college. One of the cafeterias on campus had a special restaurant called The Strawberry Patch, which specialized in different breakfast foods. It was there that GamerDude expanded his horizons when it came to breakfast; in addition to everything else, he discovered the delights of hashbrowns and home fries. GamerDude also shares his quick and simple recipes for French toast. He explains how it can be as simple, or as fancy, as you'd like it to be.

“I’m always on a mission. It doesn’t mean that the mission is necessarily entirely apparent to me... even now, I’m not quite clear what it is that creates that shape. Although I think there is something about storytelling and really understanding what’s happening in the world. A sense of investigation and trying to get to the bottom of what’s really going on is part of it.” My guest this episode is New York Times CEO, Mark Thompson. Born in London, he grew up in Hertfordshire, UK. After graduating from Oxford University with a First Class Honors in English, he joined the BBC as a Trainee, quickly working his way up through the ranks, launching shows such as ‘Watchdog’ and ‘Breakfast Time’, before various stints as Editor on flagship news shows such as Newsnight, the Nine O’Clock News and Panorama. He became controller for BBC Two and was then appointed Director of Television, before leaving the BBC in 2002 to become CEO of Channel 4. In 2004, he returned to take up the role of Director General at the BBC, during which time he reshaped the organization to meet the challenge of the digital age, with the launch of services such as the BBC iPlayer. On November 12th, 2012, he became President and CEO of the New York Times, making him responsible for leading the company’s strategy, operations and business units. Mark has been instrumental in accelerating the pace of The Times’s digital transformation. Under his leadership, The Times became the first news organization in the world to pass the one million digital-only subscription mark. Having served at the helm of world-class media companies during the course of a career spanning over four decades, I was fascinated to hear more about what purpose and fulfilment mean to Mark. We talked all about: how he navigated the BBC in his early career, and how he eventually came to lead an organisation in which he started as a trainee. We also touched on moving to New York, the challenges he faces as the CEO of the New York Times, as well as his future ambitions.
