When you fish long enough, things break. That's the nature of life, really . . . things fall apart. But if you're resourceful, you put them back together.Sometimes it's out of necessity. Honestly, a couple decades ago, I simply couldn't afford to go through gear as fast as it was wearing down, so I learned to patch waders, fix a fly rod, mend a fly line, resole my boots, sew tears in my fishing vest and fix my landing net.Likewise,  we've all run into those moments on a fishing trip where we need a quick fix for a broken rod tip or a wader patch . . . whatever it is.We all spend a lot of time, money and effort to get to the river and go fishing. But as we all know, even the simplest gear failure can change the day — it can ruin your trip. But by carrying a few things like zip ties, electrical tape, tension straps, Dacron and maybe a sewing kit, field repair or maybe just fifteen minutes spent at the tailgate can save the day. Also, part of a life on the water is the maintenance and preparation — doing what you need to do — to keep your fishing gear stocked, functional and ready to go.Being a versatile angler, like we talk about so much, requires a lot of stuff, and if you don't think it through and keep on top of it, gear failures can hold you back. That's what the guys are here to talk about tonight. My friends, Matt Grobe, Bill Dell, Dr. Trevor Smith and Steve Sawyer join me for a great discussion.ResourcesREAD: Troutbitten | All the ThingsPODCAST: Troutbitten | Versatile Angler - S3, Ep15VisitTroutbitten WebsiteTroutbitten InstagramTroutbitten YouTubeTroutbitten Facebook Thanks to TroutRoutes:Use the code TROUTBITTEN for 20% off your membership athttps://maps.troutroutes.com Thanks to SkwalaUse the code, TROUTBITTEN10 for 10% off your order athttps://skwalafishing.com/

In this special episode, Will sheds light on the upheaval in the wilderness therapy landscape, particularly spotlighting the closure of Embark Behavioral Health's New Visions Wilderness Therapy programs. This narrative delves into the broader implications of private equity's role in the mental health care industry, with a focus on how these financial underpinnings have influenced the recent pivot away from wilderness therapy models, especially in the context of adolescent treatment. The episode underscores the closure of not just New Visions in Wisconsin and Deschutes Wilderness Therapy but notes a startling trend: the total cessation of ten adolescent wilderness therapy programs in the past year alone, signaling a seismic shift in the field. In discussing New Visions Wilderness Therapy, the episode shares a brief history of the program and spotlights the utilization of trauma-informed care as a factor in its growth and success. The incorporation of trauma-informed practices into their treatment model did play a role in differentiating New Visions in a growing behavioral healthcare marketplace, aiding in its expansion and the subsequent interest from larger, investment-driven entities. This examination underscores the complexity of the adolescent wilderness therapy field, where clinical innovation intersects with business interests, leading to significant changes in the availability and approach to adolescent mental health care. This episode navigates through the nuances of these closures and the broader implications for the changing wilderness therapy landscape, offering a dive into the intersection of financial decisions, clinical practices, and the changing dynamics of adolescent mental health treatment. As the wilderness therapy sector faces this pivotal juncture, White's analysis provides essential insights for professionals, families, and stakeholders, charting the ongoing evolution of treatment modalities in the face of economic and clinical challenges. Happy Birthday Riggins, would have turned 8 today. I love and miss you more than words can describe. Trying to live with clear eyes and a full heart without you buddy. I love you and miss you always.   Clear Eyes The ability to see what needs to be done, an understanding of what the problem or challenge is. In the sports world it is knowing your assignment, what you have to do and understanding what your teammates are doing while reading the changing situation that plays out in front of you. The ability to not get distracted by less important things. Like another player's trash talk or a mistake made on a previous play. The ability to not be thwarted by what we think we know to be true, diminishing the ability to take in new information so we can better see what is in front of us.    Full Heart Strong and sustained effort. Picking yourself up and moving forward when you get knocked down. The attitude that life is 10% what happens to you and 90% what you do about it. Being all in and committed. Loyal to those you share the challenge with. Keeping the balance between one for all and all for one. It is the grit that when you are losing you at least slow the process down so there is less ground to make up when coming back. It is having pride in what you do. It is respecting the effort and talents of others even when they might be our competitor.    Cant Lose It is valuing effort even when we fall short of our hopes and expectations. We might lose the game, lose the girl, not get the promotion, be dissapointed in the end result. Recognize that clear eyes and a full heart breed success in many ways perhaps not visible to the connections with others that you might not realize until long after the experience, or perhaps never at least in this life. It improves our ability to win the next game and if we do not win the effort improves who we are.    -Steve Sawyer

How can wilderness therapy help young people suffering from trauma? Is transporting young people to wilderness therapy traumatizing? We explore these topics and more with Steve Sawyer, Co-Founder/Chief Clinical Consultant of New Visions Wilderness. Steve has been a long-time champion of trauma-informed care and entered the wilderness therapy field when there was little discussion about trauma in behavioral healthcare. Steve shares his thoughts about trauma-informed care versus trauma-responsive care and how wilderness therapy programs have evolved in their approach to trauma over the years. Steve also dives into the challenging subjects of whether transporting youth to wilderness therapy can be done without trauma and whether behavioral healthcare has become too focused on trauma. From the New Visions Website: Steve Sawyer is a licensed psychotherapist filled with passion and knowledge surrounding the intervention and change process. His experience comes from over a decade of intervention with tough-to-reach client populations in therapy settings ranging from residential, community-based, outpatient and wilderness therapy. Steve is trained in several unique therapeutic models including somatic trigger release, traumatic memory reprocessing, and HeartMath. He is also recognized internationally as a Brainspotting trainer and consultant who trains outpatient therapist and treatment programs. Through his experience he has authored two books, co-founded Wisconsin's only wilderness therapy program, New Vision Wilderness, and works as a core therapeutic training development staff with the Institute of HeartMath. He was an author in the innovative and comprehensive HeartMath Interventions Establishing a New Baseline for Sustained Behavioral Change therapist training Module that revolutionizes modern therapy interventions through an emotional physiology approach. Steve's largest project has been the development of NVW's Trauma Informed Care model in the wilderness setting that has challenged the entire wilderness therapy industry on making healthier interventions with their clients. Steve's trainings are recognized nationwide for cutting-edge therapeutic techniques and inspiration.

It's still November, which means National Signing Day is still upon us. Last year, Last year, Soccer Talk spoke to several student athletes going through the process. Their perspective was invaluable, but this year, we thought we would change vantage points and connect with some former college coaches that have taken on the business of helping student athletes navigate the recruiting process. After playing college soccer at Brown University, our guest, Steve Sawyer went on to coach at Connecticut College (D-III) and Villanova University (D-I). Steve Swayer is Co-Founder/Chief Clinical Consultant of New Visions Wilderness. Steve's journey into the wilderness field began after he had spent many years practicing as a licensed psychotherapist and was a director of a large outpatient mental practice in Wisconsin. His focus was on trauma-informed care, and when a tragedy happened in his own life, he went to Alaska to spend time in the wilderness to heal. He was so inspired that he would go onto co-found New Visions Wilderness in Wisconsin and Oregon. Through his experience he has authored two books, co-founded Wisconsin’s only wilderness therapy program, New Vision Wilderness, and works as a core therapeutic training development staff with the Institute of HeartMath. He was an author in the innovative and comprehensive HeartMath Interventions Establishing a New Baseline for Sustained Behavioral Change therapist training Module that revolutionizes modern therapy interventions through an emotional physiology approach. Steve’s largest project has been the development of NVW’s Trauma Informed Care model in the wilderness setting that has challenged the entire wilderness therapy industry on making healthier interventions with their clients. Steve’s trainings are recognized nationwide for cutting-edge therapeutic techniques and inspiration.

Michael Masse wrote us about this and a tribute he's produced. Michael writes, "I wanted to share with you a recording I recently completed as a tribute to Brad Delp, the lead singer of Boston who passed away recently. When I heard the circumstances surrounding his death, a suicide, it broke my heart. That someone who brought millions of people so much joy could feel so sad and alone—there’s no thought more tragic to a fellow musician and fan. "One of my favorite Boston songs has always been A Man I’ll Never Be from Don’t Look Back. That song hits home for me even more now. It expresses a feeling of inadequacy that I think we all can relate to at some point, and I expect that song gave Brad some comfort, too. "Here’s my humble rendition—it’s sort of an acoustic arrangement. I could never do Brad's voice justice, but I wanted to record it to mark his passing. I performed all the vocals and music, and recorded and mixed it in my home project studio. The chain was a Neumann TLM49 into a Pacifica pre amp then through my RME Fireface 800 into Cubase 4."
