Indonesia's ambitious plan to move the administrative headquarters of its capital city from Jakarta to a new location on the island of Borneo, in the East Kalimantan province, is nearing the completion of its first phase. Known as Nusantara, the new city's inauguration is scheduled to coincide with Indonesia's Independence Day on 17th August, the date of the final term of office for the current President Joko Widodo. The project has been deemed necessary as Jakarta is considered no longer fit for purpose. Located on the island of Java, it ranks as one of the most densely populated cities in the world and it is reported to be sinking by around 17 centimetres a year in some areas, due to a combination of environmental pollution and climate change. With four more phases to go, around two million people are expected to inhabit Nusantara by the planned completion date of 2045, but that remains dependent on a number of factors and the schedule has already hit some challenges. Future development is reliant on billions of dollars from foreign investors and currently the Government is struggling to secure much commitment. Furthermore, with Presidential elections due next month, there are concerns about whether a new leader will be inclined to continue with the vision announced by the outgoing President Joko Widodo. So this week on The Inquiry, we're asking ‘Can Indonesia pull off relocating its capital?' Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. **Tai-Ex opening ** The Tai-Ex opened up 12-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 16,525 on turnover of $2.8-billion N-T. The market lost ground on Thursday, despite the U-S House approving a debt ceiling and budget cuts package to avoid a default crisis. **Taiwan and Lithuania Ink MOU to Boost Bilateral Digital Resilience ** The National Institute for Cyber Security and Lithuania's Innovation Agency have signed a memorandum of understanding that seeks to mutually boost the digital resilience (數位韌性) of both nations. The agreement was signed remotely by institute head Ho Quan-de and the head of Lithuania's Innovation Agency using an external communication adapter during a virtual conference. According to Digital Affairs Minister Audrey Tang, the use of the external communication adapter marked a bilateral milestone as it was issued by Ministry of Digital Affairs and recognized by Lithuania. Along with strengthening mutual digital resilience, the M-O-U also aims to boost bilateral cooperation while seeking talent exchange. **UN Warns of Russia Blockage of Ukraine Ports ** The United Nations is warning of a new threat to global food security. U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Russia is limiting the number of ships allowed to pick up Ukrainian grain at Black Sea ports in its campaign to get Kyiv to open a pipeline for a key ingredient of fertilizer to get to world markets. He expressed serious concern that only 33 ships departed from Ukrainian ports in May, half the number compared to April, and exports of grain and other foodstuffs (食品) totaled just 1.3 million metric tons last month, less than half the amount of the previous month. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tweeted Wednesday that the port of Yuzhny is blocked and more than 1.5 million tons of agricultural products are waiting there for shipment to at least 10 countries. He urged everyone to pressure Russia to unblock food supplies. **US President "Fine" After Fall ** The White House says President Joe Biden is doing "fine" after he tripped and fell Thursday as he was handing out diplomas at a graduation ceremony at the US Air Force Academy. Toni Waterman has more. **Italy Florence Bans ShortTerm Vacay Rentals in City Center ** The city of Florence has announced an immediate ban on new short-term private vacation rentals in the city's historic center. The move is part of an effort to bring full-time residents back to one of Italy's most popular tourist destinations. Students in Italian cities, including Florence, Milan and Rome, have been camping out in tents on campuses to protest a lack of affordable housing. At the same time, art cities like Florence and Venice have seen their housing stocks depleted (耗盡) by short-term rentals, defined as covering any period less than 30 days. The Italian government is expected to adopt a plan that so far allows only the city of Venice to cap the number of days a property can be rented out at 120. That was the I.C.R.T. news, Check in again tomorrow for our simplified version of the news, uploaded every day in the afternoon. Enjoy the rest of your day, I'm _____.

Most organizations around the globe have faced a significant number of challenges over the last couple of years. The same can be said for intellectual property (IP) offices. From the pandemic to financial market turmoil, through supply chain issues, increased cyberthreats, IP offices have navigated these hurdles and probably more, stretching their IT, budget, and organizational resources in unexpected ways. Yet, IP asset registrations have been soaring globally, and IP offices generally seem to have been riding those waves with success, often transforming challenges into opportunities to evolve to better meet the needs of creators, businesses, and the market.Beyond their role as processors of IP applications and registrations or an inventory of registered assets, how do IPOs envision their mission in 2023? What sort of initiatives do they carry out to ensure they stay in tune with innovators, businesses big and small, and the market at large? How much of a transformative force can they be for the IP world? Our guest today is Kathi Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)—America's Innovation Agency. As the chief executive of the USPTO, Ms. Vidal leads one of the largest IP offices in the world, with more than 13,000 employees and an annual budget of more than US $4 billion. She is the principal IP advisor to the U.S. President and its administration through the Secretary of Commerce, and is focused on incentivizing and protecting U.S. innovation, entrepreneurship, and creativity. Prior to joining the USPTO, Ms. Vidal was Managing Partner for the Silicon Valley office of the law firm Winston & Strawn, a position she held since 2017, representing both patent holders and defendants, both innovators and startup companies with limited resources, and some of the most successful and well-known companies, in U.S. courts and the International Trade Commission. She has also been deeply involved in practice before the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), Federal Circuit appeals, and the Supreme Court. Join Ms. Vidal for a fireside chat at INTA's upcoming 2023 Annual Meeting Live+ in Singapore. Covid-19 struck amid a push by the Indonesian government to increase the role of science and technology in driving economic development. The government enacted a new Science and Technology Law in 2019, and has also formed a new National Research and Innovation Agency, known as BRIN. In this week's Talking Indonesia podcast, Dr Dave McRae chats with Professor Arief Anshory Yusuf, founding director of the SDGs Centre at Padjajaran University, about the economic impacts of Covid-19, Indonesia's likely trajectory for recovery, and the prospects for a transition as part of this recovery to a so-called knowledge economy - an economy based on the ability to produce and make use of knowledge. Today's episode is the latest in the “Policy in Focus” series of Talking Indonesia episodes, supported by the Knowledge Sector Initiative (KSI), a partnership between the Australian and Indonesian governments that aims to improve the use of evidence in development policymaking. This series will appear periodically in alternate weeks to the regular Talking Indonesia episodes. The views expressed in this podcast episode do not represent the views of the Australian or Indonesian governments. The Talking Indonesia podcast is co-hosted by Dr Dave McRae from the University of Melbourne's Asia Institute, Dr Annisa Beta from the University of Melbourne's School of Culture and Communication, Dr Jemma Purdey from Monash University, and Dr Charlotte Setijadi from the Singapore Management University. Familial hypercholesterolaemia (or FH for short) is an inherited condition which can lead to extremely high cholesterol levels. It's passed down through families and without treatment, FH can lead to heart disease at a very young age. But it can be treated with medicines and a healthy lifestyle. The key is diagnosis. A pilot scheme supported by the Innovation Agency is aiming to help increase the number of cases of FH, detected at an early age. Dr Sue Kemsley, a GP in Cheshire, is leading the parent-child screening programme for FH and has been explaining more about how it works and the significant difference it could make. GP practices wishing to join the pilot are welcome to contact Dr Julia Reynolds, associate director of transformation, at the Innovation Agency Julia.reynolds@innovationagencynwc.nhs.uk

The number of Blackpool mums classed as smokers when they give birth has shown a dramatic decrease. Up to 3,000 women give birth in Blackpool each year. The percentage classed as smokers once stood at 31 per cent. Now the figure is closer to 21 per cent and falling, making the resort one of the most improved areas in the country. The success is down to the efforts of a dedicated nine-strong team who work closely with expectant mums to explain the health benefits of not smoking during pregnancy on their baby. Research shared by the Innovation Agency, the Academic Health Science Network for the North West Coast, has helped provide the Blackpool team with additional insight to help mums make potentially life-changing decisions as Nigel Thompson reports.

Mike Baker talks about a spin-off of the ‘We are the NHS’ campaign which had a big impact on recruitment, particularly of nurses. Mike, Associate Director of Communications at Wirral University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, delivered an intensive two-week campaign across different social media campaigns using the slogan We are ‘WUTH’. It resulted in a 168 per cent increase in completed applications for band 5 nursing posts compared with the previous two weeks. Mike was speaking at the Innovation Agency’s EngageWell event in May 2019.
Consultant psychiatrist Dr Johannes Cronje of Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust describes ‘Selling the sizzle not the sausage’ – a different approach to recruitment. Their traditional method of placing ads in a national journal was expensive and not having the desired impact. They worked with The Guardian on sponsored editorials, using testimonials from staff and supporting with a range of promoted posts on social media. A key feature was video interviews by Deputy Medical Director Dr Arun Chidambaram with consultant colleagues about working at Mersey Care. The result was a huge increase in consultant recruitment. Johannes was speaking at the Innovation Agency’s EngageWell event in May 2019
NHS England Lead Campaign Manager Ian Hampton describes the biggest highlight of his career – leading on the creation and delivery of the ‘We are the NHS’ campaign. He tells how the NHS’s first recruitment campaign for over a decade was delivered at break-neck speed and how retaining a focus on specific audiences directed the creative development. It was important to retain an impartial and evidence-based focus in a complex political environment, to deliver real results. Ian was speaking at the Innovation Agency’s EngageWell event in May 2019. Apologies for a glitch in the recording just after three and a half minutes.
