I love living in DFW because I think we're one of the most philanthropic communities in the entire country. There are galas going on all the time, and almost all of them support a very worthy cause. That's why I have the folks behind the Yellow Rose Gala in the studio right now. To my right is Larry Lott, in the middle is Andrea Reich, and on my far right is Adam Lewis.

SERPENTINE PINK, 78min., USA Directed by Vivian Sorenson A dark surreal experience. A first of its kind, vortex of a lesbian?? It was an incredibly special experience to put on such an emotional story about broken hearts trying to heal in the weirdness of the California desert, everybody involved in the production bonded through the uniquely rigorous catharsis that occurred after conjuring such rawness in every performance. I can't remember who it was but it was either Kristin Condon, who co-leads the film as Henrietta and is a co-producer, or O-Lan Jones who plays Andra, who expressed that Serpentine Pink and the expansive possibilities within its surreal visual vocabulary, as well as the vibrational intimacy of the wounded characters, would make a rad indie movie. I was super moved and excited by the focus on the female-led filmmaking of an underheard LGBTQ+ story, as well as the idea of transforming the theatrical depiction of pain and the characters' wayward navigational attempts towards healing into an ambitiously poetic cinematic experience – at once personal and epic, highly stylized and on location on the spiritual vortices of the Joshua Tree desert. What motivated me to make this movie was the beauty and raw emotion embedded in Megan Breen's words (Screenplay writer and playwright). The pain these characters endure is both devastating and strangely beautiful, and I felt compelled to bring their experiences to life. I love the desert and the visuals you can capture there. I wanted dance to be a part of the film and the strangeness, hostility of the desert to be a character as well. I knew it would require a unique approach—boxing gloves to tackle the challenging, brutal scenes, and soft mittens to smooth, coax, and nurture the words, scenes, guiding them into a compelling narrative flow. I also always love a good driving scene! I'm drawn to horror, the starkness of wilderness and desert landscapes, and the emotional complexity they evoke. I also love working with actors as sensitive and talented as this cast. This project offered the unique challenge of transforming a piece that began as a play and evolved into a film script into a cohesive and captivating narrative that offered a perspective not usually seen in cinema. Originally aired as episode 198 on March 22, 2022. Trigger warning: This episode contains discussion of eating disorders. At the age of 25, Eva Noblezada is a two time Tony Award nominee, a Grammy Award winner, and a WhatsOnStage Award winning actress and singer. She starred as Kim in Cameron Mackintosh's London revival of Miss Saigon when she was 17 years old, and shortly after played Eponine in the West End revival of Les Misérables. Eva later reprised her performance as Kim in the first Broadway revival of Miss Saigon (also her Broadway debut). In 2019, she made her film debut in Yellow Rose starring alongside Lea Salonga, who originated the role of Kim in Miss Saigon. Eva originated the role of Eurydice in Hadestown on Broadway, and it's in Hadestown where she continues to lead, and take audiences “way down under the ground”. Eva speaks candidly about her past toxic relationship with the word “perfect”, how it affected her life as a 17 year old all on her own abroad, leading Cameron Mackintosh's London revival of Miss Saigon, and why she felt like she was “falling for years”. She opens up about living with anxiety, panic attacks, and body dysmorphia, and how she's learned to come back to herself at those times, and ask the important questions - “Are we in danger? - We're okay”. Talking about Hadestown, Eva shares her thoughts on Eurydice (and playing Eurydice), and her love for the “extra layer of consciousness” that can be seen throughout the whole show. In this episode, we talk about: Growing up Filipino Mexican, and discovering musical theater A strong work ethic, instilled by her father The mental and physical toll of an 8 show schedule Meeting Tara Rubin at the Jimmy Awards Pole dancing as fitness, and how society sexualizes women Her “all or nothing” way of life Connect with Eva: IG: @livevamaria Twitter: @EvaNoblezada Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Hey, Slackers!Ever miss the old TV guides? I know I would love to look at that crazy grid and plan on what to watch during the week. Thanks to TVTango.com, you can find pretty much every TV listing going all the way back to 1950.While we were raised on the "Big Three" networks of ABC, CBS, and NBC, there was another network before FOX was launched in 1987 - The Dumont Television Network, which ran from 1946 to 1956. But that's a little before our time.Throughout the episode we will jump around from the 60's, through the 90's, with particular attention paid to Tuesday and Thursday night programming. ABC dominated Tuesdays, with NBC controlling Thursdays.Oddly, for a period of time in the 1960's, one hour dramas would start at the half hour, which seems so strange to me. For most of my life, those TV dramas often aired in later timeslots, often starting at 10:00 PM. Who programs a drama to start at 8:30 or 9:30!? What were some of your favorites? And do you recall shows like the Yellow Rose or Riptide?
A Texas House committee on Tuesday subpoenaed death row inmate Robert Roberson to testify Friday at the Capitol. The 58-year old Roberson was sentenced to the death penalty for the 2003 death of his 2-year-old daughter, Nikki. In other news, the body of Texas native, a U.S. Army vet killed fighting for Ukraine, returned home Tuesday; the Dallas County Commissioners Court has given its elections vendor an ultimatum: prove the software problems that plagued the Nov. 5 general election are solved or lose the county's business; And Dallas is once again playing an early role in the physical rollout of a brand for Kendra Scott, who launched her namesake jewelry brand more than two decades ago. THE ROSES OF THE ENCHANTED CASTLEOnce upon a time, there was a castle, long abandoned, surrounded by a large garden; only two gardeners remained to care for it and cultivate the flowers. The roses, with their vivid colors, shone in every season on the green lawns and flowerbeds. The castle overlooked an old town. From a distance, it appeared magnificent, and perhaps it had been."What secrets might lie inside the castle?" the roses wondered. One evening, after sunset, they discussed this with the fireflies, who were also naturally very curious. The Red Rose, always the most adventurous of the group, approached whispering to the fireflies with a confident and velvety voice: "Friends, how about an adventure in the castle tonight?"The brightest firefly, Lucilla, responded enthusiastically: "It would surely be fun! But how will we get in?""Ah, I heard the gardeners talking about a key hidden under the third stone near the old well," said the Yellow Rose, joining and rubbing its petals as if sharing a precious secret. The Blue Rose intervened timidly, "But we must be careful, I've heard that the castle hides ancient mysteries and playful spirits."Lucilla laughed lightly, "Oh, do not fear, Blue Rose. With our light and your beauty, no mystery can withstand us!""And what if we encounter some obstacle?" asked the White Rose, always the most prudent of the group."We will face them all together," replied the Red Rose with determination. "After all, we are not just flowers and insects, we are the explorers of the enchanted castle!"The decision was made and in the dark and magical night, they bravely made their way along the path leading to the castle's entrance. After a short stop at the well to get the key, they approached the great door silently. Unlocking it, they pushed with all their might and with difficulty, managed to open it a crack.A rusty and scraping sound echoed: SCREEEK. CRREEK. SCREEEK.All the geckos, insect eaters, got scared and running up and down the castle walls fled away in an instant along with the bats. The fireflies, followed by the roses, sneaked into the grand hall, where a very high ceiling was decorated with the most fantastic designs; majestic and fantastic statues stood on the sides—a shiver of magic made the rose petals tremble. Moving together, they entered a huge hall, resembling a museum: medieval soldiers' armors with swords on one side, and Japanese samurais with their sharp, gleaming katanas on the other.Every room in the castle was fascinating and rich in history, and there were so many of them! Halls, corridors, staircases, and secret rooms to discover. The explorers were enchanted every time they opened a door or turned a corner, but when they realized that the first light of dawn was approaching, the roses hurried back to the garden, and the fireflies, having become invisible, disappeared into the air. In their flight, the roses tripped over each other, and a cloud of lost petals of various colors fluttered in the air. Fortunately, the gardeners, rushing to their aid, glued them back with dew. By now, they had discovered the theft of the keys and the great movement of the night. All the flowers and insects in the garden, upon waking, whispered to each other the tale of the magical night:"What secrets are yet to be discovered in the castle?"The following evening, there were no speeches. In front of the castle's entrance were the roses and fireflies, but also tulips, ladybugs, crickets, lilies, bees, butterflies, camellias, grasshoppers, and even two sunflowers, tall and imposing, who took the lead in front of the group.Again, the great creaking: SCREEEK. CRREEK. SCREEEK.Once inside, all together, they climbed a wide staircase. At the top, there was a dark tunnel with a large carved door at the end, which, touched by the two sunflowers, magically opened. Inside, a wonder! A large, dusty hall containing shelves overflowing with books large, small, and medium-sized. It was the castle's secret library!Surprisingly, there was a lot of movement: books jumped from one shelf to another, shaking off the dust, and words came out from the open pages and filled the hall with a great chatter. Every book wanted to have its say because it had been so long since anyone read or listened to them. One of the roses, along with a camellia, were resting and chatting on a wooden bench when a small children's book fell on the rose's corolla. "Oh, oh, oh, who's the culprit?" she exclaimed almost amused, and at the same time, an idea came to the two flowers, lighting up their petals with joy."Wonder of wonders!" said the rose, "We must make this library known to all the children and inhabitants of the town. Each of these dusty books is waiting for nothing more than to be opened, read, and cherished with care!"So at dawn, the group of explorers, while returning to the garden, were already devising an action plan for the following night. Sunset came again, and with it the night and its magic. That evening, in front of the castle staircase, there were really everyone: the roses and fireflies, tulips, ladybugs, crickets, lilies, bees, butterflies, camellias, grasshoppers, and the two sunflowers from the previous night but also dahlias, irises, centipedes, geraniums, beetles, petunias, spiders, and even the two gardeners who were now in cahoots and agreed on what to do.Once again, the great door was opened with the usual great creaking: SCREEEK. CRREEK. SCREEEK.Once inside, all together, they climbed the staircase and walked through the dark tunnel to the library. At the entrance, this time appeared the old librarian custodian, who had been there for time immemorial and who had not shown himself the previous evening because he wanted to see what would happen. His hair was gray, he wore a cloak faded from use and all covered in cobwebs, two half gloves full of holes, and a pair of glasses perched on his nose, without which he couldn't see from here to there.Intimidated, the garden inhabitants stopped, except for the roses who, bowing, greeted the old librarian and expressed, on behalf of everyone, the desire to open the castle to the children — particularly the enchanted library, where books could be consulted, read, and appreciated by everyone in the town. What did the old librarian custodian of ancient secrets think of this idea? "This is an enchanted castle," he said, "with goodwill, anything can come true!"No time was wasted, and the company immediately began with the preparations. During the night, they dusted and reorganized the shelves, and by dawn, only the final touches were left. The gardeners dressed as butlers, with dark suits, white gloves, and black shoes, to greet the children at the entrance. The roses went to the beautician to smooth their petals and trim their thorns: their task was to accompany the curious boys and girls and provide all the information the young visitors wanted to know. Now everything was ready. The gardener butlers, the roses, and all the garden inhabitants sprang into action. The little visitors were amazed, impressed by the armors, paintings, and secret passages. But once they reached the library hall, they wasted no time and began to choose books to read. The sunflowers, perched on two ladders, made sure that the books jumped from the shelves into the hands and backpacks of those who had requested them. At the exit, the butlers made a grand gesture of thanks to each visitor, handing out three sweets: two to munch on and one to give to someone else. The enchanted castle had returned to its splendors, and everywhere stories and wonders of its past were told while the roses and fireflies, satisfied, had become the guardians of the garden, together with the two faithful gardeners. What a beautiful adventure they had started together! "Come in, come in, little explorers of the enchanted castle! Choose a book and a new adventure will start immediately!" — said a sign at the entrance of the blooming garden: "You're all welcome!"

It's a same day turnaround for this holiday treat, as Justin Jones (@xPrimusPilusx) returns to the podcast to discuss The Iron Claw, the new movie about the Von Erich family, which we saw earlier today. There are plenty of spoilers (for a docudrama), so if you haven't seen it yet, save it for after you watch it. Short answer: it's a good movie, in and of itself, but not great, and pretty good for a wrestling movie. We discuss the whole film, which actors we thought did the best jobs in the main cast, as well as looking at all the actual wrestlers in the movie. (The one everyone is making fun of on social media isn't that bad.) There's also a lot of general wrestling chat: territorial history, foreign menaces as world champion, attendances now and then and how to judge them, the careers of Ross and Marshall Von Erich and more. We also tease which new biopic will probably be the subject of an upcoming pod and will be praised nearly as much as this picture. Note: we recorded this in the movie theater parking lot, while sitting in the car, and so the quality is not as good as usual. We apologize for the inconvenience.

This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief traveled West to Houston, Texas to visit Yellow Rose Distilling and their Head Distiller, Michael Langan. Yellow Rose is known for their Outlaw Bourbon that has a 100 % Yellow Dent Corn Mash bill. The whiskey has changed a lot in the past 5 years since the big man first tasted it. It's gained that outlaw spice that he was looking for with its name. In the first half, Big Chief and Michael start with a sample of their Outlaw Bourbon that is still a few years from being released. At two years and barrel strength, it surprised Big Chief. In the second half Michael treats Big Chief to a special pour from a Crowded Barrel blend for The Texas Whiskey Festival that includes their Outlaw Bourbon. This blend was made up of 3.5 yr. Old Bourbon from San Luis spirits, 2 yr. old Bourbon from Shire Distilling and 4 yr. old Bourbon from Yellow Rose Distilling. At 116.1 proof this is a big, bold, beautiful Texas whiskey. This ride on The Whiskey Trip shows how a distillery can change over time and also how their whiskey can come of age. Go back and re-visit those distilleries that weren't quite ready for your palate in the past. Cheers!

I first heard of the movie Blackboard Jungle while reading Derek Thompson's Hit Makers: The Science of Popularity in an Age of Distraction. The film is most remembered today for opening with the song Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley & His Comets, which set off the rock and roll revolution and everything that came after it. Blackboard Jungle is a story mostly told through the perspective of an inner-city teacher named Richard Dadier, and serves as a way to showcase what at the time was considered urban dysfunction among teenage boys. Here's how Thompson describes the significance of the film and its opening track.“The breakout success of ‘Rock Around the Clock' had everything to do with its placement at the beginning of the film Blackboard Jungle,” said Jim Dawson, author of Rock Around the Clock: The Record That Started the Rock Revolution. The reaction to Blackboard Jungle was something like hysteria — not just among teenagers, but also among their parents and politicians. Kids danced in the aisles of movie theaters and blasted the song from their cars. On May 17 1955, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Princeton University dorms held a competition to play the song as loudly as possible from their rooms. Around midnight, the students emptied into the quads, set fires to trashcans, and chanted up and down the streets. Meanwhile, several major American cities censored the film. The mayor of Memphis forbade teenagers to see it, while Atlanta tried to ban the movie after an alderman's wife said it threatened the “peace, health, morals, and good order of this city.”Just as l'affaire Caillebotte consecrated impressionism through scandal in the 1890s, Blackboard Jungle's notoriety promoted its opening track, unleashing the rock-and-roll genre. On July 2, 1955, three months after Blackboard Jungle debuted, “Rock Around the Clock” became the top-selling single in the country and the first song called “rock 'n' roll” to reach number one on the Billboard charts, ultimately selling more physical copies than any song by Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Madonna, or Michael Jackson. One of the laws of chaos is that a microscopic change in the present trajectory can lead to wildly different future outcomes; the Brazilian butterfly shakes her wings, and a Pacific typhoon forms off the coast of Indonesia. The most popular melodies of 1954 and 1955 were dulcet waltzes next to the high-tempo hits of the later 1950s. Billboard's number one songs before and after “Rock Around the Clock” were the schmaltzy “Unchained Melody” and the minstrel ballad “Yellow Rose of Texas,” which sounds like it could have been written in the 1850s.Could what's implied here possibly be true? That one song placed at the start of one film changed everything about music and ultimately led to a seismic shift in American culture, with implications for everything from education and crime to family formation? The possibility boggles the mind, but I can't totally dismiss the idea. One thing I knew for sure after reading the passage above was that I needed to see this movie. After tackling some deep questions about the causes of historical events and how contingent they might be, Rob and I focus on how race and gender issues are portrayed in the movie. On race, the film seems practically modern. Some themes and tropes that wouldn't have been out of place in the 1990s or 2000s include: the middle-class professional being horrified at being accused of racism; the black kid having a good heart while only the white kid can be portrayed as pure evil; and the way that racial differences are downplayed in a social context. This last point is particularly striking, as a group of lower-class white boys has no racial consciousness at all, and for all practical purposes the young men treat their black and Hispanic classmates like they do anyone else. When it comes to relations between the sexes, however, one sees the 1950s as a completely different universe. It is considered completely normal for the main female character to care primarily about her looks and keeping her husband happy. Overall, we see a great deal of stagnation in American culture on race, alongside radical changes in how men and women relate to one another. While the movie's portrayal of male-female relations lines up with popular propaganda about the 1950s, I found myself shocked at the difference between how that decade is commonly described and what was shown in this film. Surely, movies don't perfectly reflect reality, but the fact that this particular representation of race relations was plausible to an audience of that time is surely worth noting. This experience has made both of us to want to watch other old films in order to have a more direct understanding of the cultures of past eras. Very little can be simply taken for granted.Listen here or watch on YouTube. Get full access to Richard Hanania's Newsletter at www.richardhanania.com/subscribe

German indie alternative rock duo Para Lia will be releasing their latest album "In Clash With The Zeitgeist" on August 25, 2023 via the Berlin label About Us Records. "In Clash With The Zeitgeist" was mastered by Thommy Hein (Die Ärzte, Nina Hagen, Udo Lindenberg ) which blends their love for the late 80s and early 90s indie rock with some 60s influences, psychedelic, garage rock and early prog rock elements. For their love of Greece, their band name is Para Lia, meaning "coast" or "beach" in Greek (παραλία) -a name full of mystery but optimism, which both has history and evokes a balance of the masculine and feminine. Para Lia is multi-instrumentalist René Methner and vocalist Cindy Methner. For this duo, symbolism and lyricism are of importance. Their second single,'Yellow Rose' is an ode to losing a loved one who can never be forgotten and keeping a piece of them in your heart. The yellow rose stands for loyalty, close friendships and the circle of trust. Here, Para Lia creates the yellow rose perfect symbiosis of these - melancholy with warmth, sadness with joy, and the prospects of hope - all at the same time. https://paralia.bandcamp.comPlaylist and podcast: https://djnocturna.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DJNocturna Listen : http://modsnapradio.comQUEEN OF WANDS with DJ NocturnaEvery Saturday on ModSnap Radio KMOD: San Antonio2pm (HST), 5pm (PST), 6pm (MST), 7pm (CST), 8pm (EST)

Episode 16 is a fun but reflective conversation with my brother, Dr. Jeffrey T. Johnson. Memories of our childhood give way to current realities, ultimately leading yo to the recognition of the one-year anniversary our mother's passing. Anne Genell Crawford Johnson was, and always will be, our "yellow rose of Texas." Her story obviously shaped ours. Perhaps hearing this conversation will impact your story as well.
On this week's TCBCast, Gurdip and Justin briefly touch on some recent Elvis news such as the confirmation from Baz Luhrmann that he's seeking to release the Viva Las Vegas remix from the film, a new preview track from the forthcoming Elvis On Tour box set, and we take time to give gratitude to listener & patron Rick, who incredibly generously donated his collection of Elvis material and memorabilia to the TCBCast library. This episode also marks the first return of TRIVIA in a long while, helped along by part of Rick's donation. Then, Justin takes Gurdip on a journey through history ("flux capacitor... fluxing") to close out "Justin Explains Bad Elvis Movie Songs Month" with what is ostensibly an exploration of the "College Songs Medley" recorded for the 1969 film "The Trouble With Girls." In it, Elvis and The Mello Men sing alma maters, fight songs and other melodies associated with various American universities, from "The Whiffenpoof Song" to "Far Above Cayuga's Waters" and more... including "The Eyes of Texas", which prompts a Song of the Week-within-a-Song of the Week for "The Yellow Rose of Texas/The Eyes of Texas" from the 1964 "Viva Las Vegas" and those songs's less cheerful pasts. And THEN the final College Medley song takes us all the way back, wrapping Elvis's film career up in a neat and tidy bow... if you've ever heard the songs in the medley before, you can guess exactly where this episode is heading, and you're absolutely right... Bad Elvis Movie Songs Month becomes a celebration of one of the greatest! If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Editors - Julia Bloch and Taylor Levy BODIES BODIES BODIES editors Julia Bloch and Taylor Levy combined their editorial talents, albeit not always at the same time, to craft a sly and satirical take on the horror genre. Although the two NYC-based editors had never (really) met before, each had a few "prerequisite" genre films to their credits and that experience served them well in the cozy confines of their shared cutting room. The film's distributor, A24, describes the plot of BODIES BODIES BODIES as such; When a group of rich 20-somethings plan a hurricane party at a remote family mansion, a party game goes awry in this fresh and funny look at backstabbing, fake friends, and one party gone very, very wrong. JULIA BLOCH Julia Bloch has edited such films as; Chaos Walking (2021), His House (2020), Hold the Dark (2018), The Wall (2017), Green Room (2015) and Blue Ruin (2013). TAYLOR LEVY Editor Taylor Levy's work can be seen in; Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon (2021), Prisoners of the Ghostland (2021), Drunk Bus (2020) and Yellow Rose (2019). Details: Las Vegas International Pipe Show - The Premiere Show for Pipe Enthusiasts (vegaspipeshow.com) Pipe Question: (From Jeremy Dukes) Hey Beau and Jon David, Erin and I went out to do a trip in the Bourbon Trail last week for my birthday. I'd never been and I cannot praise it enough. All the tours we took were exquisite and informational. Plus, the tastings were amazing. Buffalo Trace (and more specifically Eagle Rare) is my favorite distiller and blend, and we were fortunate enough to tour their facilities. If you've never been, you must put it on your bucket list. Worth every hour of my trip many times over. My question though is this: during the tastings they gave us a small piece of chocolate for a palate cleanser, but our guide actually got us to take a bite of the chocolate and then a swig of Buffalo Trace. It was like I'd never tasted Buffalo Trace before! It enhanced so many flavors of the whiskey that I'd never recognized prior. So…the question…..would a tobacco blend with notes of chocolate (let's say Polar Express) have a like affect on my palate when I drink a glass of whiskey? Hope you both are well and enjoying your “Lunting America Tour”. Best wishes from my family to yours. -jeremy Quick Fire Questions: John Coatney Confirmed Pipe SMokers of Fiction & Literature Edition Henry Mitchell (the dad) or George Wilson (the neighbor) (Dennis the Menace) The Wind in the Willows or Curious George Tony Stark or Professor X Meriadoc Brandybuck or Peregrin Took Listener Feedback: (From Eric Karloski in GR) Beau?
