Next up in the Shape+ series is Dania. “This mix is a collection of organic sounds, guitar, violin, cello and especially voice. I've included a few demos I've been working on with just guitar and voice with my friend Ilyas Ahmed which will be released on Geographic North in October. Here you will also hear some music from Ulla and Perila who just released an album on my label Paralaxe Editions. They used the floor as a studio to create some beautiful ambient jazz. Also, some forthcoming by composer Flora Yin Wong which will come out next year. All in all, some gentle but visceral sounds. Some other reverby bells, and music for tranquil times.” An architect of textured, neo-ambient soundscapes, Dania explores both sound and identity, focusing specifically on how the latter has fractured in a post-colonial world. Born in Baghdad, raised in Tasmania and now based in Barcelona, she moves between cultures and continents, her amorphous creative vision directly tied to her transient existence. The founder of experimental platform Paralaxe Editions, Dania divides her time between Spain and the remote corners of Australia, where she works as an emergency doctor. Dania is an artist of the SHAPE+ platform for innovative music and interdisciplinary art, co-funded by the European Union and Pro Helvetia. An exceptional episode with an exceptional guest!    Expeditions have the power to ignite a profound mindset shift. They open up new possibilities, urging you to think beyond conventional boundaries and encouraging the birth of fresh and creative ideas.    These ventures allow you to examine your own aspirations with honesty and find inspiration within them. Mark shares that as an entrepreneur, balancing financial stability and pursuing your dreams is crucial. Earning money is necessary to sustain your livelihood, especially if you want to venture into expeditions, and incorporating this need into your sponsorship package is imperative.    However, the key to success is creating a remarkable product or service that genuinely benefits people. Your brand is synonymous with the business you represent. When others resonate with your energy, passion, and the path you're pursuing, they will be more inclined to support and sponsor you, forging a powerful alliance.   Join the conversation with Mark Wood, an established speaker, author, and explorer who has completed over 30 major expeditions worldwide. Mark's expeditions include: Guiding film crews to the Magnetic North Pole. Leading two trips to the Geomagnetic North Pole. Completing solo journeys to both the Geographic North and South Poles.   Mark is also an accomplished mountain climber and has peaked Mount Everest two times and narrowly missed a third peak to save another climber's life. He has been a part of major BBC and Channel 5 documentaries and, over the years, has trained and led people in the extremes of the planet.    Mark's has created extreme classroom environments on Mount Everest involving over 1.2 million students and is ranked among the top 5 communicators in the world on the Skype platform.   Let's jump in!   Key Highlights From The Show:   [00:01] Episode intro and a quick bio of the guest; Mark Wood [02:41] When Mark discovered his passion for being an explorer  [08:09] Mark's key driver to his expeditions and exploration of the world [10:57] A very key moment that Mark is proud of in his path [14:56] Four things Mark teaches to young people all over the world   [19:54] Taking time to create, appreciate and have fun with your world [21:02] Mark's most intense situation that he had to deal with in life and exploration [27:38] How Mark translates his experiences in extra-ordinary situations to his audience  [31:29] Mark's experience on solo expeditions that last for many days [43:17] About Mark's next 100 days solo expedition [49:47] The planning and preparations that go into solo expeditions [51:19] Why Mark consider himself an entrepreneur  [53:52] Ending the show   Notable Quotes :   The key to everything you do is to have total respect for yourself, respect for the environment, think differently about life and take time to appreciate and have fun.  Focus on the moment and take one step at a time; the moment is the key price to use. The core of adventure is inspiration; if you do it for ego, you will fail because it is freaking hard-bearing extremes.   Preparation for expeditions is paramount. Nothing is a failure; it is only an obstacle that you have to pass through; as entrepreneurs, we gain energy from each failure.   Connect With Mark Wood:   Website: http://markwoodexplorer.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/markwoodexplorer Latest expedition: http://www.expeditionsolo100.com/  Mark's Books: https://www.wordsbydesign.online/shop/mark-wood-solo-explorer    ----- Help me inspire more (wannabe) entrepreneurs.     In April of 2020 I posted "Of Reed and Breath" which is an ambient sax mix. You can find that mix here: http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2020/04/of-reed-and-breath.html https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/of-reed-and-breath/   When I created that one I wasn't sure how it would work. Turns out, ambient sax is a great theme to build a mix on. I've been planning on a follow up for a long time and it's finally here.   Since that first mix two years ago I have totally bought into wind instruments in ambient and modern composition music. That's why my fav album from last year was "Departures" by mastroKristo(who makes an appearance in this mix). From Clariloops to Sam Gendel to Dirk Serries to Andrew Heath, sax and other woodwinds have become a big part of my ambient listening habit. All the tracks in this mix are excellent but I especially love the cut from Matt Borghi & Michael Teager and the cut from Dirk Serries. Perfect combo of sax and ambient. I also have to mention the final track Max Richter's On the Nature of Daylight by Signum Saxophone Quartet. That track is one of my favorites of all time so when I found a sax quartet cover of it I nearly lost my mind. Perfect way to end the mix.   I don't do these year-end jazz mixes every year. Most of the time I'm just too lazy. I don't keep close track of what came out and what I liked. At some point this year I started tossing individual tracks into a playlist and that helped me remember what I enjoyed in 2021. So here's my Jazz 2021 mix. It is by no means a "Best of" mix. It's merely a collection of jazz-ish tracks from albums I liked this year. And of course some of the tunes lean a bit toward ambient.     I'm getting this mix up & running just in time for Halloween. This one, while it does have a bit of a nighttime feel to it, is a little less creepy than some past Halloween mixes. For this collection I looked for titles that fit the theme of night to day. The mix moves chronologically from sunset to night to moonrise and set to darkness to dreaming and finally to light and dawn. Grab a pumpkin spice beer and...UGH, no don't do that! Grab a normal beer, like a refreshing Hamm's, and sit on the porch, in the dark, listening to this mix. Happy Halloween. Clarice Jensen, the composer, cellist, and Artistic Director with the Brooklyn-based ACME — that’s the American Contemporary Music Ensemble — has a new cassette release out via Geographic North, titled Drone Studies. The two pieces that make up this release, titled “The Organ that Made You Bleed” and “One Bee” show off an improvisational and naturally expressive tonal exploration that veers away from the compositional works she’s created with ACME, and via collaborations with artists such as Jóhann Jóhannsson, Max Richter, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Dustin O’halloran, Stars of the Lid, and more. Host Chad Radford met up with Jensen and Jonathan Turner at Knoxville, Tennessee’s Big Ears festival in March of 2019, where they discussed these two side-long pieces and their relationship to her body of work.
