New Zealand's Phoebe Rings announce their debut album, Aseurai, today with a pair of new singles “Aseurai” and “Drifting.” On Aseurai, due June 6th on Carpark Records, the quartet, led by NZ jazz-school-trained pianist and songwriter Crystal Choi, adds disco and city-pop influences while staying true to the dream-pop sound of their self-titled EP. “Aseurai means around you in the atmosphere, hard to reach, fading away,” Choi says. “It's a poetic expression. You wouldn't say it in normal conversation, but I like that.” While Phoebe Rings was originally a solo project of Choi's, Aseurai marks a shift with contributing songwriting credits from the whole band, which includes Guitar/synthesist Simeon Kavanagh-Vincent, bassist Benjamin Locke and drummer/producer Alex Freer. The four musicians cut their teeth working on other notable NZ projects such as Princess Chelsea, Fazerdaze, Tiny Ruins, AC Freazy, Sea Views and Lucky Boy^. With a more ambitious collection of instruments, Choi says this album heralds the start of true collaboration: “I feel more precious about this LP because it includes everyone's gems.” The broth is richer with more cooks in the kitchen, and the brewing of textures creates a distinct ‘Phoebe Rings' sound.

Born in Venezuela, raised in Nicaragua, and musically christened in New Orleans with his band Lawn, Rui Gabriel is currently based in Indiana. On his debut solo album Compassion—out now from Carpark Records—he layers indie rock guitars, drum loop beats, and harmony-laden vocals that feel like Yo La Tengo snuggling up with Primal Scream or Len if they were part of the Elephant 6 collective. On this special episode of Hotline, he answers questions from the 1-877-WASTOIDS hotline about important topics like pizza vs burgers, drum loops, and liking music that might get you into trouble with your parents.Call us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS. Evan Lewis and Tom McGreevy of Ducks Ltd seem to be at opposite ends of the creative spectrum when it comes to organization. Lewis likes chaos: "The process should be a disaster," he says. McGreevy, on the other hand, needs order. His writing process involves emailing lyrics to himself, editing them, then sending the edited version to himself. Over and over. This allows McGreevy to see the version history of the lyrics in one giant email thread. The new Ducks Ltd. album Harm's Way is out now on Carpark Records. I'm very proud that not once in this podcast will you hear the term "jangle pop."
On today's episode, I talk to musician Fat Tony. Originally from Houston, Texas, Anthony Obi started his musical career performing with a number of different rap groups in high school, but it wasn't until his early 20s that he began writing and releasing albums under the name Fat Tony. Since 2010, he's released over a dozen albums and EPs on labels like Young One and Don Giovanni, and his latest I Will Make a Baby in This Damn Economy was just released on Carpark Records at the end of August, and it's great! The Beths - Silence is Golden from the 2022 album Expert in a Dying Field on Carpark. New Zealand indie pop outfit The Beths are on the verge of dropping their highly anticipated third record Expert in a Dying Field on September 16th via Carpark Records. The follow-up to 2020's Jump Rope Gazers sees the band delve into character sketches of relationships and their aftermaths, with an emphasis on the aftermath. Our Song of the Day is the single “Silence Is Golden.” Frontwoman Elizabeth Stokes spews lines at a brisk clip, nimbly quipping lines like, "I wish that I could freeze time, go to the wild, soak up the quiet / Till I'm dripping wet with it / Then I would drive home, go to my room, wring myself out / That would be the end of it." According to the band, the song conveys the, "stress and anxiety manifesting as an intolerance to noise, where each new sound makes you more and more stressed.” With fuzzy guitars and a screeching guitar solo contrasting that message, the song is a roaring and nervy antidote to silence. While silence may be golden, a Beths song gleams just as bright. It's an increasingly-common modern story. A project born out of a bedroom, a dorm room, a laptop, a loose collection of ideas, shifts from the micro to the macro. Few of these stories, however, have carved out such an intense niche as Dylan Baldi's noise-rock vehicle Cloud Nothings. Initially serving up indie pop with a sunny disposition, the band nosedived into Steve Albini-approved dissonance on 2012's Attack on Memory and never looked back. A prolific outfit and a rough-and-tumble live must-see, Cloud Nothings continue to adapt and evolve as a full-band assault. Following the release of their most recent album, The Shadow I Remember, Baldi spoke to us from his Philadelphia home about the band's ever-continuing and endlessly-intriguing story. The Shadow I Remember is out now via Carpark Records. Sometimes, all it takes to write a signature song is...quitting your band. During a sabbatical from the tense White Album sessions of 1968, a trip on Peter Sellers' boat gave Ringo the inspiration for "Octopus's Garden." With a little help from his friends, George in particular, he was able to put together something that's incredibly charming and fun, and the last example of the band all pulling together to support their beloved drummer; it's a stellar performance all around, and a sonic gem, along with the rest of Abbey Road. As childlike and saccharine as it may be though, is it possible this is a much deeper song, where Ringo's really seeking out some shelter from the storm around him? Could this be his "Help"? We're joined this week by Liz Stokes and Jonathan Pearce, 1/2 of the New Zealand-based rock band The Beths. Their latest album Jump Rope Gazers, out now on Carpark Records, was in our top 3 albums of 2020, a literal constant quarantine companion. Over the last few years, their blend of propulsive, sing-along choruses, four-part vocal arrangements, and wry, introspective lyrics has earned them fans around the world, as well as opening slots for indie rock titans like The Breeders, Pixies, Weezer, and Death Cab for Cutie. We chatted on Mardi Gras day about all sorts of things, from very different Beatle-fan perspectives, and, in a podcast first, Jonathan admits that he maybe got his ranking wrong on this one. You can follow The Beths online at thebeths.com, as well as on Facebook and Instagram. Jump Rope Gazers is streaming everywhere, and you can grab a copy on vinyl or cd at https://thebethsnz.bandcamp.com. Do it and thank us later. What do you think? Too high? To low? Just right? On today’s special episode, join the talented Johanna Warren near her home in Wales for a private concert. Enjoy her plant-inspired lyrics as she is surrounded by the sounds of the forest. Johanna recently lent her voice to Netflix series ‘The Midnight Gospel’ and released her fifth solo album Chaotic Good on Carpark Records. Beyond her musical artistry, Johanna is a mystic, herbalist, Reiki Master, and advocate for the healing powers of Nature. For more from Johanna, catch her upcoming livestream concert on October 1. Tickets on sale now! “I’ve been thinking of life as one big roleplaying game,” Johanna Warren offers when asked why she chose to title her new album after a Dungeons & Dragons reference. “There’s chance, there’s choice, and there’s alignment—what forces in the universe do I choose to align myself with?” Chaotic Good is Warren’s fifth full-length album and first for Wax Nine/Carpark Records. It represents a moment of rupture in the singer-songwriter’s career as she transitions away from the quiet, folk-adjacent work that defined her early solo albums with a bold statement piece that demonstrates the breadth of her ambition. Here, Warren flits between crushing admissions set to spare piano solos and muscular declarations of independence that have more in common with grunge acts of bygone years than anything we’ve heard from Warren in the past. “The last few years I’ve had an urge to change my name, or create some alter-ego,” she says. “But I’ve come to realize that ‘Johanna’ is already just a character. We think we know who we are based on what’s already happened, but we’re allowed to make new choices.” The oceanic, soothing single “Bed of Nails” illustrates that realization perfectly when Warren sings: “I tried a little bit too hard to be myself/It turned me into something else.” Recording Chaotic Good was an exercise in self-reinvention. Warren decided to produce the album on her own, borrowing recording equipment from a friend to do much of the preliminary tracking alone in a garage. She enlisted a few key collaborators to fully enliven her vision, most notably former Sticklips bandmates Chris St. Hilaire and Jim Bertini. On the raucously resilient “Part of It,” Warren is joined by her musical brethren as she addresses a noncommittal narcissist and—a trademark of Warren’s work—the narrator’s complicity in her own suffering: “Don’t look at me like I’m the one holding you back/and I won’t look at you like you have something I lack.” Adding to the album’s dynamism is the fact that it took shape over the course of four years in studios across the United States while Warren was touring her most recent albums Gemini I and II. Warren uses words like “patchwork” and “scrapbook” to describe Chaotic Good; it is a collection of sonic snapshots that transport her to specific places in time with each listen. “This album is about learning how to be with myself after a lifetime of codependent relationships,” Warren says. You can hear that especially well on “Twisted,” which finds her confronting a former lover, and ultimately, letting them go. “I’m a warrior, but I give up,” Warren howls, the surrounding production warping and distorting as her raw vocal crests to an acidic scream. Though her lyrics are resigned, her delivery is anything but. It is a moment of total abandon, when the multitudinous aspects of a personality coalesce to form something at once dazzling and monstrous. “Chaotic Good is a metamorphosis,” Warren says. “It’s my phoenix moment. Everything I’ve done before was just building the funeral pyre.” Johanna Warren is a multi-instrumentalist and producer who began her career as a singer/songwriter in the Brooklyn-based psych folk band Sticklips. The group released two albums before disbanding in 2012, and after a stint performing backup vocals for Iron & Wine, Warren self-released her debut solo album, Fates, in 2013. The album prompted her to tour nationally under her own name, and since then, she’s led a nomadic existence, calling cities across the United States home for short periods of time. Over the past few years, Warren has toured alongside Mitski, Julie Byrne, and Marissa Nadler, but a life on the road hasn’t slowed her output. In 2015, she released her sophomore album nūmūn to acclaim, propelling her to the forefront of artists to watch in the second half of the decade. Warren dedicated the spellbinding collection of acoustically-driven songs to the phases of the moon and to the divine feminine — forces of great power and consequence that are all-too often overlooked. The following year, Warren announced a twin set of albums released on her own label Spirit House, which promoted a radically inclusive, artist-friendly ethos. Each of the songs on Gemini I corresponds with a song on Gemini II, which debuted later, in 2018. The two albums are in conversation with one another, offering up a character sketch of dueling personalities vying for acceptance. To contrast nūmūn, which was rendered using a simple palate of acoustic instruments, the arrangements on Gemini I and II integrated a wide array of instrumentation and more palpable percussion, furnished with help from a small cohort of Warren’s longtime collaborators. Following the release of Gemini II, Warren embarked on her extensive Plant Medicine Tour, during which she invited local herbalists, farmers, and activists to come and share resources with attendees about alternative remedies. In the spare moments between tour stops, Warren recorded her latest album in studios across the United States. Entirely self-produced, Chaotic Good is Warren’s first album for Wax Nine/Carpark and it is her boldest to date, finding her in a state of transition as she introduces listeners to a new phase of her artistry. 2 MUCH TV. Watching TV and writing songs about it. We're talking about THE SOPRANOS this week. We also get into change and personal growth, like how Matty doesn't have bugs in their hair anymore and Sam's room isn't full of dead mice. Our guest this week is FAT TONY. You may know him from his music, Vice Live or Thrift Haul. Fans of ours may recognize his name from the Dude Ranch cover compilation that came out last month. We go long on his love of the Sopranos, comfortable footwear and the human condition. He also says that he loves us!

The Beths - "I'm Not Getting Excited" from the 2020 album Jump Rope Gazers on Carpark Records. New Zealand pop band The Beths return this month with their sophomore album Jump Rope Gazers, out July 10th via Carpark Records. But frontwoman Elizabeth Stokes is keeping her cool about it. In a press release, she states: “People always ask ‘are you excited!?’ and it’s a fair question, because exciting things do happen to us sometimes. Support slots, overseas tours, music releases. Stuff we’ve dreamed about for years. So the correct answer is always ‘yes.’ But the truth is that deep down there’s a tiny Liz saying, ‘don’t get excited.’ She is certain that anything good that could happen will most likely not happen, because of a freak accident. Or because somebody finally realises that we aren’t worthy, shouts ‘phony!’ and takes everything away. I wrote ‘I’m Not Getting Excited’ last year, well before everything really did get taken away. From everyone. It feels like the song has a new context, but we don’t know what it is yet. And now we all share a blurry, uncertain future.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate

The Beths are a rock band based in Auckland, New Zealand, founded by lead singer/songwriter Elizabeth Stokes and guitarist Jonathan Pearce. Blending cool, catchy riff rock with fun vocals -- from all four band members, no less -- the band has a likeably addictive sound. Jonathan and Liz recently invited us in for a look at their makeshift home studio, and chatted with Maia about their new album, and what life may look like for the band this year. In the latest episode, the dads talk about Cloud Nothings' 2012 album—- Attack on Memory. Based in Cleveland, Ohio, the band started in 2009 in Dylan Baldi’s parents’ basement as one of several “fake” MySpace bands. However, over the years, the act slowly gained a following after being invited to open for Woods and Real Estate. Not long after, the Dylan was signed to Carpark Records as a one man band. The record we look at today was their third release, but the first Cloud Nothings album to feature frontman Dylan Baldi’s live band as full time members. It was also recorded with producer/engineer Steve Albini at Electrical Audio, so that’s pretty rad. These changes resulted in a heavier and darker sounding album than the previous power pop tracks that the band was known for. The dads also get off topic and talk about Creed and the Corona Virus.

This week we are joined by the multifaceted MC Fat Tony who has a new album out called Wake Up on Carpark Records. Topics discussed include smokiness levels in Mezcal, his experiences with Vice, the NY underground rap scene in the early aughts, comedy, and his need to connect personally with his producers. Tony is one-of-a-kind and we had a lot of fun talking with him. In the second segment we are joined by hip-hop writer Jack Riedy to talk about live shows, Chicago, and various levels of washdedness.

On today's episode I talk to musician Liz Stokes. Based in New Zealand, Liz is the lead singer and guitarist of the indie rock band The Beths. While a relatively new group - their debut EP Warm Blood was released in 2016 - they have a sense of self and chemistry that is utterly apparent from even a casual listen. Their first album Future Me Hates Me will be released on August 10th on Carpark Records, and it is truly delightful! It might be a cliche to call someone a Renaissance woman, but it’s difficult to describe Lexie Mountain any other way. The artist, writer, musician and comedian has been a mainstay in Baltimore’s arts and DIY communities for years, creating work that often grapples with gender and communication. Lexie might be best known for The Lexie Mountain Boys, an all-female experimental vocal group that put out two records on Carpark Records. Lexie talked about using art to stave off depression, and told the story behind some of her projects, including an attempt at staging the world’s longest game of telephone at The Walters Art Museum in May. Lexie also is a writer -- full disclosure, she contributes to City Paper and has written for The Baltimore Sun in the past -- and she's currently in a rock band called Scroll Downers. Lexie also discussed Twitter, tarot and finding her scene.(Photo courtesy of PSquared)

On today's episode I talk to musician Sadie Dupuis. Originally from New York, Sadie grew up both in the city and also the wilds of Connecticut. Perhaps though, you might know Sadie from her amazing band Speedy Ortiz. Speedy Ortiz started as a solo project for Sadie while she was working at a summer camp, but after the first album The Death of Speedy Ortiz, it became a full band, and their first studio album Major Arcana was released last year on Carpark Records. And it is super! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter, and check out my gameshow podcast Snap Impression!
On today's show I talk to Katherine, Teeny and Lizzie Lieberson of the fantastic band TEEN. The Lieberson sister come from a long line of musicians and dancers, but originally, only Teeny had pursued music as a career, playing keyboards in the popular band Here We Go Magic. While she had some time off from the band, Teeny began to write and record songs on her own, and eventually recruited her sister and friends to form a band to play the songs. They've released a number of albums and EPs, and their latest album The Way and Color is now available on Carpark Records. It's genuinely an awesome album. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter, and check out my gameshow podcast Snap Impression!
