The Sea Captain Way is about energizing top performers to take risks, push outside their comfort zone, and pursue life-changing goals. Co-hosted by Phil Bender, Sea Captain Coaching's Founder, and Greg Patton, President of Trade Wind Marketing, the podcast investigates what it takes to navigate the uncharted waters of personal and professional growth. In this episode, you will hear the story of Phil and his journey to found Sea Captain Coaching. What is the plot of your story and what makes it compelling? Key Points Sea Captain Coaching is all about helping others navigate the uncharted waters of personal and professional growth. We work on meeting people, discovering what visionary life they want to achieve, and helping them pursue it. Phil had many coaches and mentors throughout life. Until he was 35 he never really let one in to help him achieve living a visionary life. That was when he set his course for navigating uncharted waters. Who you are is more than what you do. What gets you to Base Camp is a lot more about what you do and what you know, but to summit it takes more than just that. Collaborating with clients helps them develop a compelling story about their personal journey and how that helps them connect with clients and prospects. Lead with vulnerability. Helping people articulate their character is important. It builds intimacy and allows them to pursue their hopes and dreams. Phil says his life's goal is to be a hero. He asks people what hero traits they think about when they're at peak performance. What are those traits? Phil had a defining moment that brought him to this career. “And that path changed me in a lot of ways, not right away, not even consciously, but to know me is to know that, from that day forward, I was going to become a protector of people. And maybe you could make a case for being my penance. But the point is that I was set to become a protector of others.” It's important to figure out your own story in order to use it in the engagement process with potential clients. Who you are is more important than what you are. Greg told his Quin Oaks branding story. (feel free to elaborate here) What is your story? What makes it compelling? What are the different character layers you pull from it? Greg is very clear on why he was a college coach for so many years, and I found it truly inspiring to feel his passion for helping young people develop. Greg is a tremendous example of how any college tennis coach can have a deep impact on a community and countless lives through college tennis, without having to win a bunch of NCAA titles in the process.

Legendary coach and motivator Greg Patton joins the pod this week for an incredible conversation about his coaching principles, love for the game of tennis, passion, success and more. Just being a part of this conversation made such a positive impact on my life - both on the court and beyond! I hope this episode affects you similarly! "The General" Greg Patton is a 2-time NCAA National Coach of the Year and is fourth all-time in NCAA Division I career wins. Just last month he was selected to be inducted into the ITA Collegiate Hall of Fame. He's led his teams at Boise State, UC Irvine, UCSB and CSU Bakersfield to 24 conference championships and has been selected the Conference Coach of the Year an astounding 15 times! In addition, he's had two stints as a US Junior National Team coach where he's worked with the likes of Pete Sampras, Jim Courier, Michael Chang, Andy Roddick and more! Some of the things Greg shares in this interview are: -how music impacts tennis performance -his coaching principles -the greatest feeling in the world and why (he thinks) we play tennis -how success without celebration is failure ...and more! ---------- Follow me on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/andygerst10s) to stay up to date on new podcast episodes or be sure to SUBSCRIBE on Soundcloud, iTunes and Stitcher! We had former BSU tennis coach Greg Patton to talk about being inducted to the international tennis hall of fame and then Jeremy Morris joined us to discuss the judge overturning the jury on the case against him and his HOA on his Christmas decorations.
University of Arizona Men's Tennis Head Coach Clancy Shields joins the pod to talk about his compelling junior tennis story that ended up getting him featured in a movie, how competitiveness has made him so successful as both a player and coach and a whole lot more! We get into his coaching philosophy that's built around a love for the game, enthusiasm, hard work and positivity and having guys on his teams that are energy givers rather than energy takers. We also discuss how to build he uses a developmental plan for his players to help them stay focused on the process each and every day. Clancy was a blue chip recruit as a junior player before his successful playing career at Boise State University. Playing with his brother Luke and under legendary head coach Greg Patton, he achieved a top 20 national ranking in both singles and doubles, led his team to a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA tournament and was named the WAC Player of the Year his senior season. He began his coaching career as Greg Patton's assistant coach at Boise State before taking the head men's coach position at Utah State, a perennial last place finisher in the Mountain West conference at the time. By just his third season the program had arguably their best year ever - winning the conference title, setting a dual match win record and achieving the highest NCAA team national ranking in school history two seasons in a row. Clancy then went on to accept the University of Arizona head coaching position where he is today, and not surprisingly has helped turn that program around as well. Last season the team posted their most dual match wins this decade and this season they've already achieved a ranking as high as #21 in the country. This was an awesome conversation with one of the best young coaches in college tennis. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! -------- Follow me on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/andygerst10s) to stay up to date on new podcast episodes or be sure to SUBSCRIBE on Soundcloud and iTunes! Our last Bronco Monday of the season. Greg Patton came in to speak about his speech he's preparing for the KBOI Business Breakfast 3/19
Tennis is an obsession for Garrett Patton. You can tell how much he loves the game the instant you start talking to him about it. Born into a tennis family, he's been around it his whole life and has enjoyed it as long as he can remember. Now early in his coaching career, that passion and excitement he brings every single day to the courts is one of the things his players love most about him! In this interview we get into Garrett primary obsession...college tennis! We talk about the recruiting process, team identity and his coaching philosophies. We also get into the topic of foreign players in college tennis - if there should be a limit on how many there are per team, what influence they have on their teammates and on college tennis as a whole. Garrett Patton grew up as a highly-touted junior player in Boise, Idaho. He's the son of Greg Patton - a very well-respected coach who worked with our USA Junior National Team in the 1980s and is the only tennis coach to win the NCAA National Coach of the Year award at two different universities. Bleeding Bronco Blue for as long as he can remember, Garrett went on to play his college tennis with his dad as his coach at Boise State University where he achieved a high ranking of #15 in the NCAA national individual rankings and lead his team to four straight NCAA team appearances. Following a brief career on the pro tour and as a hitting partner on the WTA tour, Garrett became the assistant men's coach at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He's now in his third season coaching the Mustangs with head coach Nick Carless.
