We can take hundreds of hours of lessons on how to improve our games, perfect our strokes and learn tennis strategy. But you can't take lessons for something that's infinitely harder...being a tennis parent! In today's episode we tackle that topic and more with a good friend Wade Murphy as he shares his personal story and the lessons he learned raising his son Sean, taking him through the obstacle course and arduous journey (for both child and parent) that is junior tennis. There's tons of great insight in this episode not only for parents but for players and coaches too. We talk about how Wade re-committed himself to the game and became an excellent club player in his adult life, his observations on how judgmental the tennis world is and what the role should be for the support team of a player. Lastly, we discuss college tennis and how to find the perfect fit for an aspiring high school player. ------- Follow me on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/andygerst10s) to stay up to date on new podcast episodes or be sure to SUBSCRIBE on Soundcloud, iTunes and Stitcher! We pick right back up the conversation with Curt Wheeler from a couple weeks ago in Episode 31 as we get into all the different formations you may run into in a doubles match - 1 up and 1 back, 2 up, 2 back and even I-formation. Not only do we talk about how to beat each one of them but we always share some tips on how and why YOU can use each one effectively. Additionally, we share our thoughts on lefty/righty teams and which sides each player should play, and lastly we finish with Curt and I's simple doubles principles that, if you can stick to them and do them effectively, they'll help you win a lot of matches. Lots of great doubles tips and info in this conversation so I hope you enjoy! Curt grew up a highly touted junior player out of Salem, Oregon. He played his college tennis at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego where he excelled at both singles and doubles, culminating in an NAIA All-American selection in 2009. After a brief stint coaching back in his hometown Salem area, Curt returned to Point Loma and shortly thereafter was named the head coach of both the men’s and women’s programs. ------- Follow me on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/andygerst10s) to stay up to date on new podcast episodes or be sure to SUBSCRIBE on Soundcloud and iTunes! University of Arizona Men's Tennis Head Coach Clancy Shields joins the pod to talk about his compelling junior tennis story that ended up getting him featured in a movie, how competitiveness has made him so successful as both a player and coach and a whole lot more! We get into his coaching philosophy that's built around a love for the game, enthusiasm, hard work and positivity and having guys on his teams that are energy givers rather than energy takers. We also discuss how to build he uses a developmental plan for his players to help them stay focused on the process each and every day. Clancy was a blue chip recruit as a junior player before his successful playing career at Boise State University. Playing with his brother Luke and under legendary head coach Greg Patton, he achieved a top 20 national ranking in both singles and doubles, led his team to a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA tournament and was named the WAC Player of the Year his senior season. He began his coaching career as Greg Patton's assistant coach at Boise State before taking the head men's coach position at Utah State, a perennial last place finisher in the Mountain West conference at the time. By just his third season the program had arguably their best year ever - winning the conference title, setting a dual match win record and achieving the highest NCAA team national ranking in school history two seasons in a row. Clancy then went on to accept the University of Arizona head coaching position where he is today, and not surprisingly has helped turn that program around as well. Last season the team posted their most dual match wins this decade and this season they've already achieved a ranking as high as #21 in the country. This was an awesome conversation with one of the best young coaches in college tennis. USA Fed Cup Captain and USTA Head of Women's Tennis Kathy Rinaldi sat down with me in Melbourne during the Australian Open to talk about a number of different topics, including her meteoric rise as a teenager on the pro circuit, her role at the USTA, goals for American tennis, coaching philosophy and more! We discuss the crucial elements of building a strong foundation for young players and what it takes to navigate through the different stages of development all the way to the pro tour. Kathy burst onto the WTA tour as a 14 year old, reaching the quarterfinals of the first Gran Slam event she ever played at Roland Garros. Later that summer she became the youngest player ever (at the time) to win a match at Wimbledon. As a pro she reached a career high ranking of #7 in the world in singles and #13 in doubles. Following her playing career she joined the USTA as a high performance coach working with all levels of players, from young juniors all the way to the best in the world. Late last year she became the Head of Women's Tennis for the USTA, complementing her role as the USA Fed Cup captain - a job she takes great pride in. In just two seasons as captain she's led the USA to two Fed Cup finals and the 2017 title, their first since 2000. Above all else Kathy truly cares about the players she works with and is so passionate about helping people and making a positive impact on their lives. This really shines through when we talked about her coaching philosophy and career and is something that I, along with many others, truly admire and appreciate about her. It was a real honor and privilege to have this chat with Kathy and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! --------- This episode is sponsored by Adidas Tennis apparel. If this interview doesn't get you excited to hit the courts, I don't know what will! In this episode we talk to Peter Lucassen - a veteran coach on the pro tour - about coaching philosophies, his favorite drills and things he's learned being around with some of the best players in the world. Most notably, he got to spend three weeks with Roger Federer during his off-season training prior to winning the 2018 Australian Open. All the great insights Peter had to offer along with his excitement and passion for the game of tennis made this one of my favorite conversations on the podcast I've had yet! In this episode we talk about: -lessons learned from spending an off-season with Roger Federer -similarities and differences between European vs. American player development -how to move better and more efficiently on court -great drills to improve movement and develop your weapons -finding your identity as a player -things learned from observing the best players in the world on tour ---------- Peter Lucassen grew up in the Netherlands as one of their top ranked junior players. After a brief career on the pro tour where he reached a career high ranking of #541 in the world, he decided to come to the US to play college tennis at University of Southern California where he was an integral part of two NCAA National Championships in 2010 and 2011. Shortly after his playing career at USC he started coaching on the pro tour. He first started working with promising Dutch player Indy de Vroome and then came back to the US to work with his USC teammate Steve Johnson. Since then he's worked with a number of top 100 pros, including Ernesto Escobedo, Ryan Harrison, Mackenzie McDonald, Christina McHale and Bradley Klahn, just to name a few. A lifelong student of the game, Peter's love and passion for tennis is infectious and rubs off on the people around him. It was an absolute pleasure to do this podcast with him, so I hope you enjoy and learn some things that you can take and apply to your tennis game too!
We're starting the new year off with a bang as we welcome ATP touring pro Jason Jung to the podcast! A long-time friend and training partner, Jason has gone on to have a long and successful career on the pro tour. His journey has been arduous but 2018 was (as far as results are concerned) his best year on tour, as he reached a career high ranking of #114 in the world and played in his first ever Grand Slam main draw at Wimbledon. Jason and I grew up together in the South Bay area of Los Angeles, CA. We had the same coaches for quite a while as juniors, working with Dan Mattera when we were young and then Paulo Alipio in our teenage years. We trained together often and even got the chance to play doubles with each other at a number of different tournaments, including the USTA Hard Court Super Nationals in Kalamazoo, MI. Jason went on to play his college tennis at the University of Michigan where he was one of their top players throughout his four year career. After a brief hiatus from the game, Jason began his professional career in 2011 and has been grinding his way up the rankings ever since. In this episode we get into the highlights, challenges and things he's learned during his professional career seven years on the pro tour. I hope you enjoy this conversation with Jason Jung! ------------ Follow Jason on Instagram --> https://www.instagram.com/jsnjung/ Read Jason's blog --> https://jasonjungtennis.wordpress.com

We came, we conquered! More great doubles tips are in store for you as Curt Wheeler and I discuss the Open level tournament that we recently played (and WON!) together! In this "debriefing" episode, we break down the tournament match and match, talking about the things we learned and the tactics we used against each new opponent. Some of the things we discuss include: -different tactics for playing the deuce and ad side -what to do on the "no-ad" deuce point -what to focus on under pressure or when you're feeling "tight" -who takes the ball through the middle ...and more! It's always fun talking tennis with Curt Wheeler - the head men's and women's tennis coach at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, CA. He's got such a great mind for the game and is such a student of the game, I always end up learning something new every time I talk to him. That's why he's one of our favorite podcast guests! If you haven't already, be sure to check out episodes #11 and #17 with him for some simple singles and doubles tips that are easy to apply to game right away. University of Washington Associate Head Coach Chris Russell joins the pod to discuss how to use your warmup - something we do every single time we step on the court - to make big improvements in your game. The warmup is an extremely valuable 10-20 minutes that we often times don't put much thought into, but with some simple goals, drills and things to focus on you can use that time to get better every single time you play. Chris Russell is one of the best and most experienced assistant coaches in NCAA Division I college tennis! He's currently in his 15th season at the University of Washington where the Huskies have reached the NCAA Tournament 10 times during his tenure. In 2016, Chris was named the Northwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year by the ITA. Prior to his time at UW, he served as the head coach at the University of Oregon and was named the Pac-10 Head Coach of the Year in 2000. Prior to that he was the head coach at UC Santa Barbara (his alma mater)for five seasons. Throughout his coaching career he's worked with multiple NCAA Div. 1 All-Americans and professional players on both the ATP and WTA tours. Chris and I's connection is very unique and special. Not only did he serve as my coach at the University of Washington for the first two years of my college career, but he also coached Kip Brady (another podcast guest) who was my coach when I was growing up as a junior. I've been fortunate to have a number of great coaching mentors in my life but Chris might have to be considered the Godfather of my "coaching mentor tree". Much of what I teach and believe in today I either learned directly from him or indirectly through different people that he's also influenced. It was a real treat to have Chris on the podcast and pick his brain about coaching. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did!
Back by popular demand! In this episode, Curt and I discuss some simple and easy doubles tips that you can quickly apply to your tennis game to help you win more matches right away. Shot selection, positioning, how to be a better partner and more...hope you enjoy this one as much as we enjoyed recording it! He’ll be the first to admit that he's not the biggest and strongest player out there, but one of the things that has made Curt so successful throughout his career as both a player and a coach is his mind for the game. He has a keen understanding of tactics, patterns and how to expose his opponent’s weaknesses. In this conversation I pick his brain a bit and learn what he thinks are some key tactics that he likes to teach to his players at Point Loma.

"Maximize your strengths and minimize your weaknesses." I'm sure that's something you've heard from a tennis coach or expert before. However, in this episode we are going to unpack that statement to help you understand it better and get more out of your tennis game right away! While it may be a common piece of advice that's often times easier said than done, maximizing your strengths and minimizing your weaknesses is really what playing smart, tactical tennis is all about. Having a better understanding about your own tennis game allows you to have a more clear plan when your playing points and competing. It gives you more confidence in what you can do and makes it easier for you to expose what your opponents don't want you to in their game as well. Tennis is an obsession for Garrett Patton. You can tell how much he loves the game the instant you start talking to him about it. Born into a tennis family, he's been around it his whole life and has enjoyed it as long as he can remember. Now early in his coaching career, that passion and excitement he brings every single day to the courts is one of the things his players love most about him! In this interview we get into Garrett primary obsession...college tennis! We talk about the recruiting process, team identity and his coaching philosophies. We also get into the topic of foreign players in college tennis - if there should be a limit on how many there are per team, what influence they have on their teammates and on college tennis as a whole. Garrett Patton grew up as a highly-touted junior player in Boise, Idaho. He's the son of Greg Patton - a very well-respected coach who worked with our USA Junior National Team in the 1980s and is the only tennis coach to win the NCAA National Coach of the Year award at two different universities. Bleeding Bronco Blue for as long as he can remember, Garrett went on to play his college tennis with his dad as his coach at Boise State University where he achieved a high ranking of #15 in the NCAA national individual rankings and lead his team to four straight NCAA team appearances. Following a brief career on the pro tour and as a hitting partner on the WTA tour, Garrett became the assistant men's coach at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The US/Mexico border is a very polarizing and divisive topic in our country right now. While many people may have varying opinions regarding the policies that dictate the region, I'm sure we could all agree that bringing tennis to underprivileged kids there is an amazing thing! That's exactly what Charlie Cutler's organization called the Border Youth Tennis Exchange (BYTE) does...and more! Charlie grew up as a top 100 nationally ranked junior player in the Portland, Oregon area. He played his college tennis at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri where he led his team to a Division 3 National Championship in 2008. Following a short professional career on the Futures and Challenger circuits, Charlie got his Master's degree from the University of San Francisco in International Studies with a concentration in Human Rights. While researching border asylum cases for his thesis project, he was inspired to bring tennis to the region for kids that would otherwise never have had the opportunity to learn our wonderful sport. And thus, BYTE was born! Border Youth Tennis Exchange (BYTE) is a bi-national initiative that provides after-school tennis training and academic programs to youth on both sides of the US/Mexico border. BYTE is part of the USTA Foundation's 2017 Capacity Building Cohort and the only National Junior Tennis & Learning chapter to operate internationally, at four sites in Nogales Arizona and Nogales Sonora (MX). Besides offering innovative, tech based program to under-resourced communities in the US/Mexico border region BYTE also strives to connect its student-athletes across the border through mirror curriculums, shared projects, and cross-border events. The sport of tennis puts a unique set of demands on both a player's body and mind. In this week's episode, we break down those demands with strength and conditioning coach Nick Berger along with discussing how to train tennis players accordingly, coaching philosophies and more! Nick and I grew up childhood best friends and doubles partners. Nick went on to attend college at Cal Poly SLO where he received an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology. He continued to pursue higher education and got a Master's degree in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition from Cal State Long Beach. He worked with Velocity Sports Performance as a Sports Performance Director and helped execute an NFL Combine Training Camp for the 2011 NFL Draft class that included Von Miller, Nate Solder and Ryan Kerrigan among others. Become a better doubles player by learning how to play each position more effectively. What should you be focused on as a server, returner or net player in a match? How do you use the I-formation to your advantage? In this episode of Everything About Tennis, Kip Brady and I discuss different tips, drills and tricks that you can use to help you improve your doubles game. This interview was especially cool for me because Kip started giving me private lessons when I was just 4 years old. He was an integral part of my junior tennis development and much of what I teach now are the things I learned from him at an early age. Kip was an accomplished junior player growing up in Kansas before he earned himself a scholarship to play college tennis at UC Santa Barbara. He received All-American honors during his senior year there and proceeded to compete on the ATP pro tour for a number of years. During his pro career he reached a high ranking of #369 in the world and participated in the qualifying draws at multiple Grand Slams. Currently, he's the Junior Tennis Director at the Jack Kramer Club in Palos Verdes, California where he's been coaching for the past 20+ years. Additionally, last year him and his son Kai reached the finals at the USTA Father/Son Hard Court National Championships in San Diego, CA. I hope you enjoy this episode! Boomer Sooner! University of Oklahoma Men's Tennis head coach Nick Crowell talks about Baker Mayfield, how to create a successful college tennis team culture, developing junior tennis players, how kids can find the perfect college tennis team for them and more! I got the opportunity to learn from Coach Crowell in my time at Florida State University. He was the Associate Head Coach while I was an Assistant Coach and we also ran the Seminole High Performance Junior Tennis Academy together. In that short time together he quickly became one of my most important coaching mentors. During his first season at the University of Oklahoma he led his doubles team of Spencer Papa and Andrew Harris to the NCAA Individual Doubles title, the first in OU's school history. In his 13 years at Florida State the men's team reached the NCAA Tournament every season, earning him the Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
