New Hampshire Unscripted talks with the performance arts movers and shakers
It was a road trip day for WKXL's NH Unscripted as I was invited to co-host the great Ken Cail's “One Hit Wonder Wednesday” episode!! Ken asked me to bring a list of some “One Hit Wonders” that (hopefully) he and his fans hadn't heard yet. Challenge accepted! I brought hits that were considered novelty hits or hits that were sung by famous actors (think David Soul, Lorne Greene, Richard Harris, etc). What a great show. Soooo much fun and nostalgia. Enjoy!

Lee, Daniel and Leah form up a posse this time out to cover George P. Cosmatos' epic 1990s western "Tombstone" (1993), starring, well, pretty much everyone who was a name or would be a name in the next few years. Val Kilmer's recent death was the excuse to cover the film, but aside from talking about his career-defining performance, the hosts also talk about just how great everyone else is, and if the actual film itself manages to keep up with them. How historically accurate was this thing anyway? Is this revisionist or is it a more traditional western? Was Wyatt Earp just a gangster pretending to be the law? How much of this film is really George P. Cosmatos responsible for? Are the hosts your huckleberries? Tune in to find out! "Tombstone" IMDB Daniel's Bluesky, Podcast and Patreon. Lady Leah is running a marathon for charity, so help her out by donating to her in order to support local Youth Special Olympics. Featured Music: "The Legend of Wyatt Earp" by Hugh O'Brian with The Ken Darby Singers & "Ringo" by Lorne Greene.

This week, Kate brings more reminisces from Marjorie Clarke who grew up in Haliburton village in the 1890's and early 1900's. Today it's all about Marjorie's memories of what do you do with cows wandering the streets, especially when every household tended to have a cow on their small property? Plus Paul has the story of Lorne Green, a Canadian radio personality, actor, musician and singer. Lorne became a well-known face and name, especially in North America, for his many roles including as Ben Cartwright in the long-running tv western series Bonanza and as Commander Adama in the cult sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica. Portia May White was a operatic contralto, known for becoming the first Black Canadian concert singer to achieve international fame. Born in 1911, White's formative years were spent performing in her father's church choir in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She competed in local singing competitions as a teenager and later trained at the Halifax Conservatory of Music. One of her most popular recordings was of the African-American spiritual "Think of Me". She also had a hit with the song "4 & 20 Elders". In 1944, Portia White made her international debut auditioning for the Metropolitan Opera. White became the first Canadian to sing at New York's Town Hall performance space. The New York Times reported her singing was "remarkable." White later completed tours throughout Europe, the Caribbean, Central and South America. When vocal difficulties and cancer eventually contributed to her retirement in 1952, White settled in Toronto and trained other Canadian musicians such as Lorne Greene of Bonanza TV fame, and famous pop singer Robert Goulet. Portia White was interviewed by CBC Television in 1958. One of White's final major public appearances was a special command performance for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1964. Portia White occasionally performed on American radio during the medium's golden age. We found one appearance on the show New World A'Comin in 1945, celebrating the Allied Victory in Europe during World War Two, and it's meaning to African-Americans. More at KRobCollection.com

What's a George Kennedy-themed podcast without a DISASTER? On this episode of George Kennedy is My Co-Pilot California is hit by the BIG ONE in 1974's EARTHQUAKE where an all-star cast (including Charlton Heston, Ava Gardner, Richard Roundtree, Lorne Greene, Geneviève Bujold and - of course - George Kennedy) have to deal with the after-effects of a massive tremor that destroys most of California. Of course, before the quake hits there's plenty of melodrama and complex relationships (script by Mario Puzo!), but once the earth starts to move things get properly apocalyptic. Our EARTHQUAKE talk is preceded by a short chat about a late-era episode of the television sitcom WINGS featuring George playing a put-upon version of himself! ENJOY! The post Episode 242 – George Kennedy is My Copilot – Earthquake (1974) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.

Giddyap, pardner. This week's episode of brioux.tv: the podcast takes a deep dive into everything you need to know about collecting your favourite TV shows on DVD. My guest is archivist, curator and classic TV expert Andrew J. Klyde, executive producer of Bonanza: The Official Complete Series. For many boomers, Sunday nights were spent with your family crowded around the one set in the house watching Disney, Ed Sullivan at 8 and then at 9, Bonanza. Throughout its 14-season, 431-episode run, Bonanza was the most-popular TV series of the 1960s.Besides making sure every episode was restored and transferred from 35 mm camera negatives, Klyde packed extras and bonus materials into the Bonanza Complete Series DVDs. The result is a Master Class on the history of 20th century television. For example: In digging through the background of Ottawa-born actor Lorne Greene, not the first choice to play ranch patriarch Ben Cartwright, Klyde sourced and added rarely seen profiles and documentaries from the CBC and other Canadian sources. He even added an interview I did back in 1991 with Michael Landon, who played Little Joe on the series and went on to Little House on the Prairie and Highway to Heaven. Sadly, Landon died of cancer three months after we spoke.I'm proud to play a small role in such a handsome salute to this series. Listen as Klyde takes us back to the Ponderosa with dozens of behind-the-scenes stories. Then if you have a classic TV fan on your Christmas list, take note: Bonanza: The Official Complete Series DVD set is on sale now at Amazon.
A look at a car manufacturing flop and the record made because of it by a guy who really couldn't sing.....some fun with harmonicas and Lorne Greene is back getting old, and proud of it in the Celebrity Slip Up.

"The Naked Gun" movies were huge in the late '80s to mid '90s but what most people don't know is that we first met Detective Frank Drebin years prior with the short lived show "Police Squad!". Police Squad! is a classic comedy television series that originally aired in 1982. Created by the renowned duo Jim Abrahams and brothers David and Jerry Zucker, the show parodies the popular police procedural genre. Starring Leslie Nielsen as the bumbling and clueless Detective Frank Drebin, the series follows his misadventures as he tries to solve various crimes alongside his eccentric colleagues. Known for its rapid-fire sight gags, slapstick humor, and absurd wordplay, "Police Squad!" embraces a zany and irreverent style of comedy. Despite its critical acclaim and loyal fanbase, the show was met with an early demise, with only six episodes produced. Will the S1E1 boys agree with the network's decision to end this show early? Listen as they deep dive Police Squad's pilot episode, "A Substantial Gift (The Broken Promise)" www.S1E1POD.com Starring: Leslie Nielsen, Alan North, Rex Hamilton, Lorne Greene, & Kathryn Leigh Scott Instagram & Twitter: @S1E1POD
Show notes provided by Joe Peluso: "As my old pappy used to say, work is fine for killin' time, but it's a shaky way to make a living." Brett Maverick as portrayed by the great James Garner And WORK they did! From James Garner to Lorne Greene, from Michael Landon to Clint Walker, from Miss Barbara Stanwyck to Melody Patterson, the working actors of Hollywood turned the scripts of numerous writers into a passel of TV episodes that lassoed a nation of eager viewers for over two decades. Would the affable Brett Maverick parlay a sawbuck into a small fortune needed to rebuild an orphanage? Could The Virginian and Trampas lead a crew of cowpokes on a seemingly endless trek that drove 5000 head of prime beef from Medicine Bow, Wyoming to Abilene, Kansas before the winter snows set in? And would Captain Parmenter ever wise up to the shenanigans of Sgt. O'Rouke and Cpl. Agarn in and around Fort Courage? Join your two favorite bronco-busting ranch hands, Richie and Joe, as they ride the frontier landscape that was the AmericanTV Western. Unforgettable larger-than-life characters, harsh landscapes fraught with famine and peril, unbridled lawlessness, and passion, and countless acts of selfless heroism were all part and parcel of a typical night of TV watching in the 1950s and 1960s. From Saturday morning kiddie fare (The Lone Ranger and Fury) to prime-time "adult westerns" Maverick and Bonanza), the genre never ceased to amaze and entertain its loyal viewers. With A-list guest stars and talented newcomers (Burt Reynolds, Steve McQueen, and Clint Eastwood, to name a few), TV westerns told bold tales of courage, tolerance, friendship, and compassion. Sure, there was the occasional shoot-em-up, and the "treeing of a town" now and again, but the weekly efforts of Ben Cartwright, Marshall Matt Dillon, Victoria Barkley, and Judge Henry Garth paved the way over the dusty trails to a more civilized western frontier. And we loved it!! What else is there left to say but, "Who was that masked man?"
From February 5, 1979 on CBS Radio this is the first episode of Sears Radio Theater. The Host is Lorne Green and stars John McIntire and Janette Nolan. Announcer is Art Gilmore. Air check from KMOX St. Louis. Sears Radio Theater was a radio drama anthology series which ran weeknightly on CBS Radio in 1979, sponsored by the Sears chain. Often paired with The CBS Radio Mystery Theater during its first season, the program offered a different genre of drama for each day's broadcast. In 1980, the program moved to the Mutual Broadcasting System and became the Mutual Radio Theater. The Mutual series broadcast repeats from the CBS run until September 1980, when a short season of new dramas was presented. Sears continued as a sponsor during the Mutual run.Monday was "Western Night" and was hosted by Lorne Greene. Tuesday was "Comedy Night", hosted by Andy Griffith. Wednesday was "Mystery Night" with Vincent Price as host. Thursday was "Love And Hate Night" with Cicely Tyson doing honors as host. Finally, Friday brought "Adventure Night", first hosted by Richard Widmark and later by Howard Duff and then by Leonard Nimoy.Actors heard on the series included Parley Baer, Mary Jane Croft, Howard Culver, John Dehner, Virginia Gregg, Janet Waldo, Vic Perrin, Hans Conried, Marvin Miller, Elliot Lewis, Jeff Corey, Lesley Woods, Robert Rockwell, Lurene Tuttle, Eve Arden, Keith Andes, Harriet Nelson, Alan Young, Tom Bosley, Marion Ross, Lloyd Bochner, Rick Jason, Frank Campanella, Toni Tennille, Arthur Hill, Dan O'Herlihy, Jesse White and Frank Nelson. It was produced and directed by Fletcher Markle and Elliott Lewis. The theme was composed and conducted by Nelson Riddle.Though less long-lived than NPR's Earplay or the Mystery Theater, it was an ambitious attempt to reinvigorate a neglected field. Like Earplay, it was broadcast in stereo.
Lorne Greene started his life in Ottawa, and began his career with the CBC as the Voice of Canada. Before long though, he became America's Dad thanks to Bonanza, and cemented himself as one of the most beloved television actors in history. WOW!!!!! Talk about flashbacks. This show was a real trip down memory lane for me. I almost find it hard to believe that there was a time when everybody who was somebody was cutting a country album. So my friends I put the show together as a "Guess Who". TERESSA BREWER, LORNE GREENE, ROSEMARY CLOONEY, CONNIE FRANCIS and BING CROSBY to name a few. And,,,,, believe it or not ,,,,,CHET ATKINS actually singing ,,,, and,,,,, you're not gonna believe it but the GRATEFUL DEAD ,,,the rock group actually sang country. Enjoy ,,,,, and please share.
We look at William Hung, the American Idol "She Bangs" guy from the 2000s certainly had his own few minutes of fame, but what happened to him? There some something stupid about 60s hits square dance style and Pa Cartwright/Commander Adama actor Lorne Greene "digs" into his singing with some hard labor about water on this week's Celeb Slip Up.

The tech industry has turned dogfood into a verb… creating an entirely new word. Ever hear this? Dogfooding. For some reason… in the tech industry… it dogfooding is when an employee uses the company's products. When I listen to KSL… because I work here… that'd be considered “dogfooding”Bosses love when loyal employees use the product. Some people think the term comes from the Old Alpo Dog Food Commercials. 40 years ago the late actor Lorne Greene would talk to the audience as he fed Alpo to his dogs. You can hear the dogs chewing there. Lorne Greene was the spokesman for Alpo… his dogs ate it. Dogfooding…The ultimate example… comes from the CEO of AirBnB. Brian Chesky is worth 8-billion dollars. But he's put his home on AirBnb. Well. Not his home. But he's renting out a room in his home… and he promises he'll be there for the guests. So you might pop outa the shower and run into a billionaire. By the way… price for the room is ZERO dollars. Since it's AirBnB the cleaning fee is probably 250-bucks. But it lists at zero. And availability is zero. It was booked up in a milliseond. So you won't get to personally experience the ultimate example… of dogfooding.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Lorne Greene played a duo part, his starring role as Ben Cartwright as well as a look-alike Hustler, exact replica of Papa Ben Cartwright. This was to be one of my favorite roles as I played Dixie Wells, a break from the simple pretty girl parts and given a character that I hadn't ever played before. You might say I was a Seductress.I could slip into being a woman who'd been around and when I say "been around" I mean she'd worked in saloons and knew exactly how to entice men and wrap them around her fingers Big Time.Actually, you fellows are no doubt aware of this species of females, AREN'T YOU???As the character I was familiar with how to "work my feminine charms on my men as you'll surely pick up on & notice her strategies, etc. This was really a very fun part for me to play. And, If I may, the antithesis of who I was in real life. OH BOY!, this was a wonderful part Indeed and one I was excited to play...Going forward, the whole Cartwright family was exceptional, exuding warmth and was special because they represented very good and honest Americans. Each and every one of the actors in the Cartwright Family were Brilliant along with the devoted helper and cook Hop Sing played by Victor Sen Yung. Before closing this fun and interesting segment, I want to mention that I was also chosen to play another part or role on Bonanza that will entice you, my audience, friends and followers. You will see in a totally different Bonanza segment, the lovely and talented Linda Crystal and me together. The title is WARBONNET.Now, let's get right into it.Lorne Greene was wonderful and in my estimation, he enjoyed every minute of it. He would say to me during breaks, "this is a good switch for me. I can finally be a bad guy and surprise my audience.” I heard him utter some words under his breath, quickly looking at me saying, "you didn't hear that did you?" I said, "what"? he said good, you're not supposed to hear words that aren't meant for your ears. To tell the truth, I did hear it but I just wasn't going to go there...You know what I mean.Mr. Greene loved switching back from the honorable Ben Cartwright, powerful head of one of the biggest family ranch owner in the territory, to a swindling hustler bad guy and may I say he did it with a great deal of finesse.During lunch breaks, he'd go into his trailer but occasionally would come out and talk as he always had something to say but only when he was in the mood. Over all, he couldn't have been nicer and garnered a great deal of respect from all cast members and crew.Oh, I want to add something about a specific scene of so-called passion with Ben Cartwright playing a dual part as the bad guy imposter and me, as the conniving wench hoping to luck out and entice some attractive man with her sensual charms, and make some money to get away from being a simple saloon girl selling those charms. Her character had always dreamed of falling in love with a rich man. Thinking back to one day in particular, our Director, Lewis Allen, had become very interested in one scene he was directing. And since I was in that scene, I vividly recall from my vantage point that I could actually see our director's reflection in a mirror on the wall that no one else could see, just me. Especially, NOT Even from the cameraman's POV aka "Point of view". So YES, there was a passionate kiss I had with Ben Cartwright as the conniving look alike bad guy. And lest you forget, I was the only human being that could see the director's reflection in that mirror. Now, to this day, I believe that, for an instant, I saw the director's eyebrows kind of flipping up and down as if He Was not only enjoying but living vicariously through the Ben Cartwright romantic scene. It might have been a nervous tick but I Don't Think So.

Here is one of my most valued interviews: one-on-one with Michael Landon, in his office in Culver City, Calif. The conversation took place in March of 1991. As you'll hear, Landon is in top form: funny as hell, wise in terms of television and life. What none of us knew at the time was that he had mere months to live.On assignment for TV Guide Canada, I flew home to Toronto right after our talk. A few days later, the terrible news broke that Landon had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. By July 1, a little over four months later, the 54-year-old actor-writer-director-producer was dead.Landon had the rare distinction of starring in three consecutive hit TV shows: Bonanza (1959-'73), Little House on the Prairie ( 1974-'82) and Highway to Heaven (1984-'89). He was shooting a fourth series, US, when I spoke with him, and when we got to Lorne Greene's horsemanship on Bonanza, he had me laughing out loud. The conversation turns serious towards the end. We talk politics, and Landon voices his disgust at how polarized America had become. He also vents his frustration at political correctness. Landon didn't like where America was headed, and wanted his last series to speak to, "the people along the banks."Hope you enjoy this visit with Michael Landon, coming to you straight "From The Vault."

Sears continued as a sponsor during the Mutual run. Monday was "Western Night" and was hosted by Lorne Greene. Tuesday was "Comedy Night", hosted by Andy Griffith. Wednesday was "Mystery Night" with Vincent Price as host. Thursday was "Love And Hate Night" with Cicely Tyson doing honors as host. Finally, Friday brought "Adventure Night", first hosted by Richard Widmark and later by Howard Duff and then by Leonard Nimoy. Actors heard on the series included Parley Baer, Mary Jane Croft, Howard Culver, John Dehner, Virginia Gregg, Janet Waldo, Vic Perrin, Hans Conried, Marvin Miller, Elliot Lewis, Jeff Corey, Lesley Woods, Robert Rockwell, Lurene Tuttle, Eve Arden, Keith Andes, Harriet Nelson, Alan Young, Tom Bosley, Marion Ross, Lloyd Bochner, Rick Jason, Frank Campanella, Toni Tennille, Arthur Hill, Dan O'Herlihy, Jesse White and Frank Nelson. It was produced and directed by Fletcher Markle and Elliott Lewis. The theme was composed and conducted by Nelson Riddle. Though less long-lived than NPR's Earplay or the Mystery Theater, it was an ambitious attempt to reinvigorate a neglected field. Like Earplay, it was broadcast in stereo.
