On this week's episode we sit down with author and award-winning political journalist Harry McGee. Harry is the political correspondent with The Irish Times, and has previously worked for several publications, including being political editor of the Irish Examiner, as well as jobs with the Sunday Tribune, and the Sunday Press. Harry also authored “The Murderer and the Taoiseach: Death, Politics and GUBU”, which explores a notorious case in 1980s Ireland involving Malcolm Macarthur, an Irish aristocrat who committed a brutal killing spree in an attempt to alleviate his financial troubles. The case not only shocked the nation but also had profound political ramifications, leading to widespread damage to the reputation of then Taoiseach Charles Haughey. The term GUBU (grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre, and unprecedented) was coined by Haughey himself to describe the events, encapsulating the surreal and shocking nature of the scandal.

The acronym used by the Irish Taoiseach used to describe the crime, GUBU (grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre and unprecedented) would come to sum up everything that Charles Haughey and his party mishandled over the course of their tenure, and the serial killing would ultimately bring down a government in the most dramatic way imaginable.Julie Jay chats to the hilarious and lovely Killian Sundermann. The Floating Voter podcast looks back on the political year that defined GUBU, with guest, Minister Paschal Donohoe, while doling out some Christmas Politician Awards along the way. The days of GUBU, Charlie Haughey and co were halcyon compared to what happened in 2016.  From the birth of new politics, the re-bert of Bertie Ahern, to water charges down the drain and car insurance and rent sky rocketing.  The Celtic Tiger was replaced by leprechaun economics; 1916 was commemorated but not celebrated; and while Joan Burton fell out of a boat, Enda Kenny was still leading the country. Joining Kevin Doyle, Philip Ryan and Niall O'Connor to look back on the year in politics was Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Paschal Donohoe where they discussed the mistakes of the general election campaign, the uncertainty over Brexit, the consequences of the Trump agenda, the Fine Gael leadership race, and predictions for 2017. Plus in the first Floating Voter Christmas Awards, who got the vote for the Bob Cratchit Hardest Working Politician award as well the Political Grinch of the Year? Each week on the Floating Voter, INM's political team discuss the main issues affecting Irish politics bursting the bubble around Leinster House. New episodes on Independent.ie every Thursday.
