The recent election and appointments to cabinet were a step backwards for gender representation in Irish politics. On today's podcast Hugh and Jennifer are joined by Aldagh McDonogh, chairperson of Women for Election, to talk about why Ireland has among the lowest proportion of female elected politicians in Europe. The conversation covers the history of female representation in Ireland, the impact of gender quotas, and the systemic and cultural barriers preventing more women from entering politics. They also look at the significance of incumbency, the need for support at local levels, and the potential future landscape of Irish politics with more balanced gender representation. Hosted on Acast. When it came to picking an alternative government, it felt to many like there was little real choice in the election just held. Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil always looked likely to return to government, with only the details to be ironed out. And so it proved. So where does that leave Irish politics? Is there any prospect of a change in the landscape before the next general election that presents voters with another option?Theresa Reidy and Gerard Howlin join Hugh and Pat to discuss this question and others thrown up by the election. Dr Theresa Reidy is a political scientist at University College Cork. On this week's episode we sit down with author and award-winning political journalist Harry McGee. Harry is the political correspondent with The Irish Times, and has previously worked for several publications, including being political editor of the Irish Examiner, as well as jobs with the Sunday Tribune, and the Sunday Press. Harry also authored “The Murderer and the Taoiseach: Death, Politics and GUBU”, which explores a notorious case in 1980s Ireland involving Malcolm Macarthur, an Irish aristocrat who committed a brutal killing spree in an attempt to alleviate his financial troubles. The case not only shocked the nation but also had profound political ramifications, leading to widespread damage to the reputation of then Taoiseach Charles Haughey. The term GUBU (grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre, and unprecedented) was coined by Haughey himself to describe the events, encapsulating the surreal and shocking nature of the scandal. Has Simon Harris managed to change the narrative? He's 'taken back control' of at least some of the key issue. We shouldn't underestimate the powerful psychological impact of wiping out Sinn Fein's aura pf 'electoral inevitability'.Is ' buying the next election' with a giveaway budget really a sensible strategy? Even politically? Is it true to FG's self-image as the party of fiscal rectitude? Is it even possible - is the Irish electorate that biddable? Perhaps call the general election and ask the electorate: vote for us and then we will show you the money.Alternatively, maybe a budget for housing, health and infrastructure would be more politically astute than one that doles out cash via tax cuts.SF's tack to the centre - or even the anti-immigration right - includes schmoozing business. Clare's Green Senator says the leader of their party had to step aside for personal reasons. Eamon Ryan will formally announce he's stepping down as leader of the party at a press conference this afternoon, having already informed the parliamentary party and Government leaders of his decision. It comes after the Greens lost both their seats in the European Parliament in the recent elections and although they did slightly better than expected in the locals, they still didn't fare that well, losing half their seats. Eamon Ryan is the second coalition leader to stand down this year, after former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar resigned as Fine Gael leader in April. Inagh-based Green Party Senator Roisín Garvey has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan she believes Eamon Ryan will leave a positive impression on Ireland for generations to come.

Get ready to unravel the complexities of Irish politics with our guest, Professor Nicholas Kiersey, an acclaimed expert on the matter. We kick off our conversation with a fresh perspective on the recent events in Ireland, the seismic shift in public consciousness during the 2008 economic crisis, and its aftermath. Together, we analyze the cultural influences and the perceptions of economic virtue in Ireland, and how these have been shaped by historical and contemporary events. In the throes of our discussion, we navigate through the influence of the Irish Labour Party, its alignment with the Brahmin left, and how neoliberalism has altered the political scene in Ireland. We draw parallels with center-left parties across Europe and the Americas, examining Brexit's ripple effect on Ireland's relationship with the EU, and the unique role Irish immigrants play in East Asia's teaching realm. We also grapple with the challenges faced by the left, the absence of a parallel economy in Ireland, and the broader implications of these on the global stage. As we wrap up, our discourse takes a fascinating turn towards the Occupy movement in Ireland, with riveting insights from guest speaker Occupy IR Theory. We dissect the current state of global affairs, the war, and the use of RICO charges. What's more, we delve into the evolving Dublin cityscape, the generational shift, class politics, the housing crisis, and the transformation of Sinn Fein, all painting a comprehensive picture of Irish politics. Join us for this riveting exploration that promises an in-depth understanding of Irish politics and its global implications. You wouldn't want to miss it!Nicholas Kiersey is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. His research addresses austerity, biopolitics, and the crises of the neoliberal capitalist state. He is currently working on a book about socialist governmentality, and the cultural political economy of the end of capitalism. Support the showCrew:Host: C. After two months of little or no food supplies, Palestinian families of seven in the south received only three sacks of flour. An increasing number of Palestinians have been posting that they no longer can find food in the south, let alone the north of Gaza. Famine and starvation have been used as a weapon of war in Ireland and in the US too, will the world allow this to happen in Palestine? As Palestinians watch western countries support Israel, they at least expect their supporters and friends to not let them die, not by bombs nor starvation. Dr Yousef Aljamal, Helena Cobban and Tony Groves discuss starvation in Gaza and how nothing kills like hunger. Jason Knirck is the chair of the History Department at Central Washington University. He is a modern Irish historian who also teaches British and western European history. His research concerns the Irish revolution and the foundation of the Irish Free State, focusing particularly on the political rhetoric of the period. Some of his previous books include Women of the Dáil: Gender, Republicanism and the Anglo-Irish Treaty and Afterimage of the Revolution: Cumann na nGaedheal and Irish Politics, 1922-32 and he is co-editor, with Mel Farrell and Ciara Meehan, of A Formative Decade: Irish Politics and Political Culture in the 1920. In this interview he discusses his new book, Democracy and Dissent in the Irish Free State (Manchester University Press, 2023), a history of minor parties and democracy in post-colonial Ireland. A new analysis of the difficulties in normalising opposition in the Irish Free State, Democracy and Dissent in the Irish Free State analyses the collision between nineteenth-century monolithic nationalist movements with the norms and expectations of multiparty parliamentary democracy. The Irish revolutionaries' attempts to create a Gaelic, postcolonial state involved resolving tension between these two ideas. Smaller economically-driven parties such as the Labour and Farmers' parties attempted to move on from the revolution's unnatural focus on nationalist political issues while the larger revolutionary parties descended from Sinn Féin attempt to recreate or restore notions of revolutionary unity. This conflict made democracy and opposition hard to establish in the Irish Free State. Aidan Beatty is a historian at the Honors College of the University of Pittsburgh. On the 27th of August 1979, the Provisional IRA assassinated one of the best known members of Britain's royal family as he holidayed in County Sligo. But this was just one of 25 killings that took place that day. The events of that afternoon soon came to represent a watershed in the history of Anglo-Irish relations, and a landmark moment of escalation in a Northern Ireland conflict that was now settling into what some referred to as the "Long War". Naomi and Tim unpick the wider context of this notorious episode of the Troubles, and explore how it encompassed so much more than the death of a celebrity royal.
