Rick interviews Ben and John from the Henhouse Prowlers about their new project!

What connects you to the year 1946? Think of the time immediately following World War II, and perhaps black and white images of men in fedoras and women in long dresses come to mind. Maybe you have parents or grandparents who were born around that time, or maybe you know someone who lived then and has past on. It is an era that now seems quite distant for most of us, a kind of abstraction that can be read about but which remains present only in its dusty tomes and mono records. But like all eras of our past, the time when bluegrass music was born remains with us in tangible, even impactful ways. In 1946, Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys recorded their first songs with new members Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, and a new genre of music was born. Born that same year in New York City was Pete Wernick, who came to know all of the Blue Grass Boys as well as most if not all of the other first-generation stars, and played with many of them eventually as well. He remains one of the few people today who embodies a direct link to this era, making it leap from the pages of history across the decades and get us tapping our feet to bluegrass music that is still being born. Episode 267: When Ben Wright, then 28 years old, saw a banjo for sale in the window at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music, he had no idea how far it would take him. Not just to gigs at the country's best bluegrass festivals but to an improbable life of sharing American music with audiences young and old in more than 25 countries. Not only does Ben's band, the Henhouse Prowlers, have a new record deal and a fine new album, the quartet has a track record of sharing bluegrass and good vibes with more non-Americans than probably any other band. And they've created a non-profit called Bluegrass Ambassadors to extend that mission into the future.

Jon Goldfine and Ben Wright are the founders of the Chicago based Bluegrass band, The Henhouse Prowlers. Last week they issued their 10th album, "Iron and Lead."  On top of that, for the last 10 years, they have acted as Bluegrass Ambassadors through the US State Department and otherwise bringing American culture to distant parts of the world.  They have also taken those presentation skills and created a non-profit that brings music programs to schools around the country.  Make sure to check them out at the Acorn Theater on October 27.

Melissa Ngan and Herine Coetzee Koschak of Fifth House Ensemble join us to discuss their roots in the community engagement initiatives spearheaded by the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and their origins on a 36-hour road trip. They share their philosophy on the importance of relationships as the basis for developing ensemble membership and an avid listener base. We discuss the studio, social, and civic practice continuum, and how they design arts integration initiatives in collaboration with teachers and students in a way that perpetuates arts education beyond the initial residency. We chat about the Fresh Inc Festival for emerging artists and about Melissa's video game evolution from Duck Hunt to Journey. Praised by the New York Times for its “conviction, authority, and finesse,” the Chicago-based Fifth House Ensemble harnesses the collaborative spirit of chamber music to reach beyond the traditionally-perceived limits of classical music. The ensemble's artistic, educational, and civic programs engage theater groups, video game designers, corporate innovators, and folk bands to share stories as diverse as the communities it serves. Through the ensemble's heartfelt social and civic practice work, Fifth House has co-created artistic projects with urban neighborhoods, social service organizations, and an agricultural community to spark conversations on issues that matter. Ben Wright, banjo player of the Henhouse Prowlers, is a world travelling ambassador of hope and love. He's brought the gift of musical fellowship to Russia, the Baltic States, Africa and beyond. It was a true pleasure to hear his tales and catch up with a person who is a shining example of how to live life for the benefit of the self and the world. Dig it!
