In this rich conversation, Guadalupe Nettel joins Adam Biles at Shakespeare and Company to explore the themes of her short story collection The Accidentals. They delve into the complexities of perception and the uncanny, the deep strangeness embedded in familial relationships, and the porous boundary between nature and human nature. Nettel discusses how her stories often begin with a striking image and unfold through a character's voice, frequently taking shape in the liminal space between realism and the fantastic. The conversation touches on the lasting psychological and social effects of the pandemic, the emotional and moral ambiguities of parenthood, and the hidden influence of family histories. Nature—particularly animal behaviour—serves both as metaphor and mirror, challenging the illusion of human superiority. The episode also examines the short story form, translation as reincarnation, and literature's power to illuminate the cracks in our perceived reality.Buy The Accidentals here: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/the-accidentals-2Guadalupe Nettel is a Mexican author of award-winning novels and short story collections. Memory Feather, who was born with a misshapen hand and was able to communicate with animals, looks back to when she was a child living with her newly divorced mother in a dilapidated hotel far from home. Her mother, Virginia cleans rooms and turns occasional tricks to support Memory until 1953, when she's forced to return to the Mississippi Gulf Coast town where her difficult, bigoted parents live. Much to their disdain, Virginia's childhood friend Mac welcomes Mem and her mother to live with him and offers Virginia a job in his antique store. As a gay man in the 1950s, Mac suffers harassment and violence, and even Memory's cat Minerva knows that the good-looking hustler who's moved in with Mac is evil. Mem recalls her anxiety, her fears, and her role in the series of events that changed her life forever. Welcome to another invigorating episode of The BoatCast, your go-to podcast for all things music. Today, we are thrilled to feature Patty PerShayla and Lucas Powell of Rock Boat Soundcheck winners, Patty PerShayla & The Mayhaps. Patty PerShayla, a former small-town pageant queen, embraced a rock 'n' roll persona that propelled her to success. With her solo EP, "Oracle Bones," she won the 2019 WYCE Jammie Award for Best Rock/Pop Album. Teaming up with guitarist Lucas Powell and drummer Alec Klinefelter, she formed Patty PerShayla & The Mayhaps, delivering blues-infused, riff-driven music. Their debut album, "Cheap Diction," garnered attention as the band toured extensively before relocating to Nashville. The Mayhaps, despite being a three-piece band, create an electrifying sound with powerful guitar solos and captivating vocals. Patty PerShayla's larger-than-life stage presence adds to the spectacle, wielding a bass guitar nearly the size of her wingspan. While addressing the internet's impact on "Cheap Diction," the band successfully crowdfunded their music video for "Slo Mo" and received accolades at various film festivals. Patty also engages with her audience through Patreon and showcases her talent through Instagram's #1RAD challenge and YouTube covers of heavy metal songs on the ukulele. In addition to her work with The Mayhaps, Patty joined forces with The Accidentals during their 2021 national tour and performed alongside YYNOT as their lead singer. Her involvement in the music community extends to collaborations with renowned artists, such as Mike Portnoy and Frank Bello, in tribute to Neil Peart. Looking ahead, Patty PerShayla & The Mayhaps are gearing up for an extensive tour and plan to record their next full-length album. I'm a pusher, and I hope you are one too, a lever or pedal pusher, that is. Just imagine a world of harps without levers or pedals. Certainly, there are folk harps that don't have levers and still play beautiful music. But to me, that's a little like living in the forest. There is endless beauty in the forest, but I like the seashore and the prairies too. The world of music has so much harmonic richness and I really love having my pedal harp to explore it all. Of course that harmonic richness isn't exclusive to harps with pedals. Lever harps can play music every bit as chromatically varied as pedal harps and sometimes even more easily. But perhaps you're new to the world of pushers, of harp music – either lever or pedal – with accidental changes that require pushing a lever or pedal. If so, or if you're not a newbie to pushing but would like some help with ways to improve your pedal or lever technique, then you're in luck because that's what we're talking about today. So often students don't really learn to push those levers or pedals before they are playing music that calls for them. It's not just about pushing the right lever or pedal; the art is in knowing when and how to push. You may not have tried any drills to help you learn the right technique, but plenty of these drills exist. Unfortunately, not all of those helpful drills come with an explanation of the important aspects of this technique. Even fewer attempt to unravel the mysterious and very inconsistent ways the changes are marked in music. Never fear, my friend. By the end of today's episode, you'll have all the info you need to become an intrepid pusher. Accidentals, those flats, naturals and sharps that occur in the middle of a piece, don't have to cause accidents while you play, and I have 8 tips and maybe even an extra one or two, that will help you breeze through those changes with ease. Sav Buist and Katie Larson were shy high school students when a music education presentation brought them together — and changed their future. Ten years later, they front a trio called The Accidentals and have earned glowing album reviews while packing venues with their live shows. But because they've never forgotten how that high school presentation changed their lives, they also host and lead workshops across the country to inspire young musicians to find their voice and use music to improve their mental health. In this episode, they talk about how it all came together and how they are changing young lives one song at a time. In this episode, you'll learn: The importance of music education. How music helps us process what's hard to express. Why it's so important to give back to others and help them follow their dreams.
This week on Beale Street Caravan is the Concert to Protect our Aquifer. The annual fundraiser features appearances from Tom Paxton, The Accidentals, and Terry "Harmonica" Bean, live from First Congregational Church in Cooper-Young, Memphis, TN. Grammy nominated blues man, Guy Davis, will be with us to deliver an installment of the Blues Hall of Fame, an exploration of the lives of the pioneers and innovators enshrined in the Blues Hall of Fame, here in Memphis, TN, brought to you by the Blues Foundation.
This weeks guests are Sav Buist and Katie Larson from The Accidentals. It's hard to know where to start when talking about the 3-piece Nashville based (by way of Traverse City, MI) punk-folk outfit. They've made an album and toured with a full orchestra, scored a film, received acclaim from NPR and Billboard, and collaborated with the likes of Tom Paxton, Mary Gauthier, Kim Richey, and Dar Williams. On top of that, Sav just won the overall grand prize in the USA Songwriting Competition. I think you'll enjoy our conversation! Join your host Greg Howard Jr as he gets to the heart of what makes a musician tick with THE ACCIDENTALS!!!!Long before glowing acclaim from NPR and Billboard, packed shows, unforgettable festival appearances, millions of streams, and collaborations with everyone from BTS to Kaboom Collective Orchestra, the journey of The Accidentals commenced in a public high school classroom in Traverse City, MI. As the story goes, concertmaster violinist, Savannah Buist, and cellist, Katie Larson, raised their hands at the request for volunteers to play a music boosters concert and wound up being musical soulmates. As high school ended, Sav and Katie added Michael Dause to the band on drums and began nonstop touring, playing 200+ shows a year at such festivals as Electric Forest, Rocky Mountain Folk Fest, Summerfest, and SXSW, and on stages with the likes of Brandi Carlile, The Wailers, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, Andrew Bird, Martin Sexton, Rusted Root, The Decemberists, and more. Following the 2016 release of Parking Lot EP, Huffington Post touted The Accidentals among its “Sweet 16 of 2016.” Billboard called them “the band to watch.” On its heels, they signed a deal with Sony Masterworks label and 2017's Odyssey rapidly accelerated the momentum.Garnering praise from Yahoo! Music, Pop Matters, Billboard and more, NPR claimed, “[The Accidentals] are some of the most compelling songwriters of our time...they display equal interest in the focused musical forms of indie rock and pop and the expansive potential of orchestral arrangements, jam band open-endedness and impressionistic singer-songwriter expression.”The Accidentals' WebsiteInstagramTwitterFacebookYouTubeSUPPORT THIS SHOW

Episode 220 - Sav Buist and Katie Larson Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guests, Sav Buist and Katie Larson. Katie and Sav met in their public high school orchestra and became a band after witnessing an immersive workshop by two women that played the same instruments they did. Seeing the possibilities firsthand gave them the courage and empowerment to pursue music beyond the orchestra. They were inspired. They often say that music connected them to friendships and skill sets that changed the trajectory of their lives for the better. Sav and Katie met Liza Grossman, Conductor and Director of Kaboom Student Orchestra when she reached out about recording one of The Accidentals songs with her orchestra. That process allowed Sav and Katie to work with an orchestra on a whole other level. “Liza was one of the most inspirational teachers we have had the pleasure of working with, we learned more from her in a week than in any classroom we have been in.” After 10 years as a band, multiple major and indie label deals and touring over 5000 live shows and festivals, The Accidentals started their own non-profit called Play it Forward Again and Again to provide opportunities for students to experience the inspiration that launched their careers. The 40-member Kaboom Studio Orchestra, is a Hollywood-style industry ensemble that performs and records all of the music at Kaboom. Kaboom is hands-on creating with professionals, giving students the chance to learn in real time. The Accidentals have a repertoire of cinematic music just waiting to be reimagined with a full orchestra. A partnership was formed. The Accidentals would provide basic tracks and Liza's students would score, arrange and record ten Accidentals songs alongside industry professionals who would guide their creation in a supportive, encouraging way. That album would be released, and a tour would be arranged for The Accidentals with the Kaboom Student Orchestra. On that tour would be students learning tour management, sound engineering, merchandising, stage crew, hospitality, promotion, marketing, press, and more. https://www.theaccidentalsmusic.com/ https://kaboomcollective.org/ Reimagined Album: https://hypeddit.com/a89hc3 Note: Guests create their own bio description for each episode. On this week's episode of Out and About, Jerry Kolb joins Jenn Gordon to talk about the concert celebrating the release of The Accidentals and the Kaboom Collective's album, Reimagined. The Accidentals, a 3-piece indie band, are said to be "among the most emotionally compelling songwriters of our time,” according to NPR. The band leads workshops across the country hoping to inspire other young musicians. Kaboom Collective, a 40-member studio orchestra comprised of professionals and students reinvented a repertoire of the Accidentals' cinematic music. The full orchestra put a fresh, robust sound to the basic tracks provided by The Accidentals. The Reimagined concert happens on August 4th at the Scottish Rite Theatre in Downtown Peoria. For tickets and information visit: https://www.scottishritepeoria.com

Episode 205: An influx of superb roots artists from Michigan to Nashville has been good for Music City, with Billy Strings, Lindsay Lou, even Jack White. Rather new to the city are The Accidentals, the highly-skilled and daring roots pop trio from Traverse City. Since emerging five years ago, they've toured like crazy and built a large and loyal fan base. They got on a pandemic co-writing tear with some of the greats, including Mary Gauthier and Tom Paxton. And they made their most ambitious and exceptional album yet with 2021's Vessel. I talk with multi-instrumentalists Sav Buist and Katie Larson about the journey from school orchestra as teens to this run of acclaimed, edgy folk music.

AmericanaFest 2017 is in the books, and it was large and loud. Fifty venues across Nashville. A new hotel headquarters. It felt the same yet different. We're 18 years into this thing after all. It's hard to discern trends from inside the belly of the beast. But in the hour ahead we'll try. Five artists or groups from different generations and places on the musical spectrum talk about career, art, commerce, inclusion and exclusion and the elusive but cherished idea that is Americana music. In case this is new terrain for you, AmericanaFest is the snappy short version of what's been formally called The Americana Music Festival and Conference, a Nashville gathering launched in 2000. What began as strategic ideas convention has grown into a major draw for music fans with about 300 artists playing some 50 formal and informal venues around town. The exponential growth of venues and audiences and private parties surrounding AmericanaFest is emblematic of the format's success in the wider world. Americana is a legit player at the top tiers of the music industry, whether indicated by Margo Price on Saturday Night Live or Sturgill Simpson going up against Beyonce at the Grammy Awards. It's good times. Can that get too good? Too big? Too much of what Americana was meant to be an alternative to? That concern is definitely in the air, and that will get touched on in the hour ahead.
