Synopsis The thick historical novels of the 19th century French writer Alexandre Dumas, Sr. are packed with some fact and a lot of fiction. Chapter 22 of "The Three Musketeers," for example, set during the 17th century reign of King Louis XIII, begins as follows: "Nothing was talked of in Paris but the ball which the aldermen were to give to the king and queen in which their Majesties were to dance the famous 'La Merlaison' — the favorite ballet of the king. Eight days had been spent preparing for the important evening. The city carpenters erected risers for the guests; the hall would be lit by two hundred huge candles of white wax, a luxury unheard of; and twenty violins were ordered, the price for them double the usual rate, since they would be playing all night." In this case, Dumas was referencing a real event. On today's date in 1635, at Chantilly castle, a gala ballet premiered. It depicted in stylized dance the Louis's favorite activity: hunting the blackbird ("la merlaison" in French). The choreography, the costumes, and music were all created by the King himself—who also danced several of the lead roles. It got a rave review in the press of the day. If there were any critics, we suspect Cardinal Richelieu, the dreaded power behind the throne in Dumas's novel—and in real life—had them hauled off and "dealt with." Ah yes, it's good to be King. Synopsis For their February 2013 cover story, the editors of BBC Music Magazine, came up with a list of the 50 most influential people in the history of music.  Bach was on it, as you might expect – but so was Shakespeare. Any music lover can see the logic in that, and cite pieces like Mendelssohn's music for “A Midsummer Night's Dream” or Tchaikovsky's Overture-Fantasy entitled “Romeo and Juliet,” or all the great operas based on Shakespeare's plays, ranging from Verdi's “Falstaff” to a recent setting of “The Tempest” by Thomas Adès. And speaking of “The Tempest,” in New York on today's date in 1981, Sharon Robinson premiered a new solo cello suite she commissioned from the American composer Ned Rorem,  a work titled “After Reading Shakespeare.” “Yes,” says Rorem,  “I was re-reading Shakespeare the month the piece was accomplished… Yet the experience did not so much inspire the music itself as provide a cohesive program upon which the music be might formalized, and thus intellectually grasped by the listener.” Rorem even confessed that some of the titles were added AFTER the fact, “as when parents christen their children.“   After all, as Shakespeare's Juliet might put it, “What's in a name?” Music Played in Today's Program Ned Rorem (b. 1923) — After Reading Shakespeare (Sharon Robinson, cello) Naxos 8.559316 On This Day Births 1835 - Austrian composer and conductor Eduard Strauss, in Vienna; He was the youngest son of Johann Strauss, Sr.; 1864 - Norwegian composer, conductor and violinist Johan Halvorsen, in Drammen; 1901 - American composer Colin McPhee, in Montréal, Canada; 1926 - American composer Ben Johnston, in Macon, Ga.; 1928 - American composer Nicolas Flagello, in New York City; Deaths 1842 - Italian composer Luigi Cherubini, age 81, in Paris; 1918 - French composer Lili Boulanger, age 24, in Mezy; 1942 - Austrian composer Alexander von Zemlinsky, age 70, in Larchmont, N.Y.; Premieres 1807 - Beethoven: Symphony No. 4 (first public performance), in Vienna, at a benefit concert conducted by the composer; 1885 - Franck: symphonic poem "Les Dijinns" (The Genies), in Paris; 1897 - Rachmaninoff: Symphony No. 1 (Gregorian date: Mar. 27); 1908 - Ravel: "Rapsodie espagnole" (Spanish Rhapsody), in Paris; 1911 - Scriabin: Symphony No. 5 ("Prometheus: Poem of Fire"), in Moscow, conducted by Serge Koussevitzky and with the composer performing the solo piano part (Julian date: Mar. 2); 1981 - Stockhausen: opera "Donnerstag, aus Licht" (Thursday, from Light), in Milan at the Teatro alla Scala; This is one of a projected cycle of seven operas, each named after a day of the week; 1994 - Peter Maxwell Davies: "Chat Moss" (the name of a quagmire in Lancashire) for orchestra, in Liverpool by the orchestra of St. Edward's College, John Moseley conducting; 2000 - Corigliano: "Mr. Tambourine Man: Seven Poems of Bob Dylan," at Carnegie Hall, by soprano Sylvia McNair and pianist Martin Katz; An orchestrated version of this song-cycle premiered in Minneapolis on October 23, 2003, with soprano Hila Plitmann and the Minnesota Orchestra conducted by Robert Spano; Others 1895 - Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, age 22, makes his operatic debut at the Teatro Nuovo in Naples, singing the lead tenor role in Domenico Morelli's comic opera "L'Amico Francesco." Composer Danaë Xanthe Vlasse recently received a Grammy nomination for her album Mythologies featuring sopranos Hila Plitmann and Sangeeta Kaur. The album is a collection of works inspired by Ancient Greek myths. Danaë's father Marcus (née Vlassopoulos) grew up on the island of Ithaca, once ruled by Homer's legendary hero, Odysseus. Centered on vocal works, Mythologies celebrates some of the most lasting myths of history and invites listeners to ponder long-standing cultural concepts, such as idolized heroism, divine power, crisis of faith and morality, and the junction of fate and free-will. We spoke with Danaë on the Classical Post podcast about creating this album. Now that it is Grammy-nominated you should certainly take note of it. We've added one of the tracks to our new Fabuluxe playlist on Spotify. So go and check that out, too. One of the standout concepts from our interview with Danaë was exploring “cultural patience” — the need to be more self-reflective as a society. We also speak on the similarities between the ancient Greek hero's journey and the American dream. Below are the various recommended products/places we discussed on this episode. Multimedia artist, modern-day Renaissance woman, and vocal powerhouse Sangeeta Kaur (Teresa Mai) is a singular talent. Sublime vocalist, charismatic performer, devotional spiritual practitioner, Sangeeta’s body of work is both cinematic in scope and accessible to the casual listener. In a world where we are all searching for inspiration, Sangeeta consistently delivers.  Sangeeta pursued the formal study of music since she found refuge and even miracles through music at a young age. Teachers recognized her natural talent and gifted voice and encouraged and supported her through training and scholarships. Through their direction and her persistence and practice, Sangeeta earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Opera Performance from the Bob Cole Music Conservatory at California State University, Long Beach; and a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance from Boston Conservatory.  While traveling the world as an operatic vocalist, Sangeeta was introduced to the power of spiritual mantra as well as the discipline of yogic practices. Through song, she started to develop a spiritual practice that continues to transform her life and influence her musical expression. As she says, “My life’s goal is to share music from a high vibrational place.”  The high vibrational place shines through in every mantra Sangeeta chants, every aria she sings, and in every original composition she shares. Her body of work spans a wide range of genres and traditions showcasing her talents in composing and performing music ranging from soaring operatic arias to musical theater, New Age compositions, sacred mantra chants in multiple languages, and uplifting and accessible English singer-songwriter arrangements.  So far she has released four award-winning albums: Niguma, Ascension, Mirrors, and Compassion. With a team of collaborators, Sangeeta produced, staged, and premiered the ambitious and acclaimed mantra opera Niguma, in Los Angeles. Her growing list of additional collaborations include work with noteworthy pop producer Narada Michael Waldon, Grammy Winner Peter Kater, Grammy winning singer Hila Plitmann, the Hungarian Studio Orchestra, Hungarian Studio Choir, Gerhard Joost, Nicholas Neidhardt, and more. Sangeeta brings new meaning to world music with her innovations, creativity, and  in production and performance.  Some of the many awards she has received include induction into the Indie Music Hall of Fame by the Indie Music Channel, Best New Female Artist of the Year and Best Classical Artist from the Indie Music Channel, multiple Peace Song Awards, and multiple Radio Song Awards, among others. Sangeeta is committed to being an independent artist who is serving in the creation of entertainment that inspires and progresses beyond genre to truly harmonize with the heart. Through awards and acclaim, Sangeeta is regularly recognized for the purity, clarity, and resonance in her voice.  Sangeeta performs on stage regularly and is currently in the recording studio creating new work that merges classical and contemporary music with mantra and a range of lyrical traditions and approaches. The mainstream embrace of Sangeeta’s spiritual approach to music that is soulful and healing reinforces the meaning of this musical journey. Illuminance: Following last year’s multi-award-winning breakthrough, Compassion, classical crossover/New Age star Sangeeta Kaur returns with her most inspiring and diverse album yet, Illuminance. Produced by two-time Grammy Award-winning composer and pianist, Peter Kater, Illuminance is a journey through the universe within each and every one of us. In Episode 19 of the Time To Be You Podcast, Hila Plitman, Grammy award winning vocalist, teaches her listeners exactly how to tap into their creative flow, citing the importance of just getting the process started and putting work out into the world, “even if you think it’s junk.” Besides her work in opera and contemporary classic music, Hila is an active songwriter, actress and mother of a young teenager. While juggling all these roles can prove difficult, Hila is no stranger to putting in the hard work necessary to fulfill all the roles she pleases. Hila has been working in the music industry since she herself was fourteen, and works smart, outsourcing the tasks she doesn’t gain energy from.   -- Questions asked in this episode: 1. Give us a brief background of yourself and what you do? 2. When writing and singing, how do you tap into your creative side when you are also a mother and so many things? 3. How does tapping into your creativity help run your business? 4. In songwriting I know artist tend to have a lot of self-judgement, how do you come from a place of just creating and not thinking about who will or will not like it? 5. How do you tap into the feelings of your body to create? 6. What would you say to someone that hasn't tapped into their creative energy or buried it for a long time, how do they get it back and nurture it?   --   Bio: Grammy award-winning vocalist Hila Plitmann is a glittering jewel on the international music scene, known worldwide for her astonishing musicianship, light and beautiful voice, and the ability to perform challenging new works. Today’s guest, Hila Plitmann, is like me, a regular at SoulCycle. It’s no surprise that I noticed her energy right away as she was always smiling, singing or dancing. But when I heard her angelic voice, it stopped me in my tracks and I knew I had to meet her.   Hila connected with music at a very young age, landed her first opera role at age 14 and attended Julliard School of Music. Now a singer and actor, Hila is just as passionate about music now as she was years ago. And once you hear her sing (and our conversation), you’ll see the intention and light behind her.   I always love hearing about all of the various creative processes out there and I hope you’ll also enjoy hearing how Hila taps into the feelings of her body with each new project or song.   --      Question Highlights: What was it for you when you were younger that made you know that you had to follow this dream of singing, and what were the consequences if you didn’t experience or follow it? What would you say to someone who maybe doesn’t know how that creative expression can come about? How do you nurture that? When you go into creation mode, what are you thinking when you want to put something out in the world? Did you recognize your dream and create it? What happened after? What do you do now when you have a lot of extra creative energy? What new things are going on for you right now?   In This Episode We Talk about: How Hila and I connected at SoulCycle Not taking pain too seriously, but rather embracing it and inviting it in Walking and writing to process feelings Releasing self-judgment and criticism Tapping into the feelings of your body to create Hila’s non-structured structured life And so much more…   Quotes:   “It’s a state of timelessness when music and stories are in my life.”   “Relish and let yourself be in this amazing experience of life.”   -- A Grammy Award-Winning Singer, Songwriter and Actress, Hila Plitmann is a glittering jewel on the international music scene, known worldwide for her astonishing musicianship, light and beautiful voice and the ability to perform challenging new work.
