Det som är livsviktigt för oss kan också vara en stor fara för oss. Det är så lätt att oro och rädsla tränger in i vår liv, säger präst Joanna Kölsch i dagens andakt. This story was written by Greg Cahill for the March-April 2024 issue of Strings magazine and is read by editor Megan Westberg.“I love that film and soundtrack music aren't limited by preconceptions or genres,” says cellist, composer, software developer, and entrepreneur Tina Guo, 38, whose extensive film work includes the 2022 Academy Award–winning soundtrack to Dune. “Anything goes, and experimentation or seeking to always do something new is so wonderful and so exhilarating—depending on the project, anything from classical to electronic to heavy metal to country to new age to tribal to jazz. Literally anything. People used to tell me that I should ‘stick with one genre,' but this is the perfect playground for me to release all of my creative energy.”
Hans Zimmer is responsible for some of the most iconic film scores of the last 35 years. So how does one person create so much amazing music? It turns out, he doesn't do it alone. In this episode, Hans Zimmer's incredible team pulls back the curtain to reveal their extraordinary creative process, and uncover the secrets behind the otherworldly music of Dune. Tina Guo began playing the cello at the age of four and experienced an early life filled with endless hours of practice, which took a toll on her, but yet, she was able to claw her way up, as she said it herself, and reach great heights. Her classical training has given her a strong foundation and versatility as a musician, allowing her to seamlessly transition between genres. Tina drew inspiration from rock and metal music to use her electric cello in a such an amazing way that Hans Zimmer called her two weeks after the release of her "Queen Bee" video.. Her unique combination of instruments has led her to perform on many Hollywood films and video game soundtracks. From "Iron Man 2" to "World of Warcraft", she's lent her talents to some of the biggest names in the industry. As we go into the conversation she also shares precious advice for entrepreneurs, like how she got to her first million and how she balances between studio sessions, traveling, creating fresh compositions and having personal time with friends and family. Today you will understand the mindset of someone who took an all-in bet on herself, the one and only, Tina Guo.

This Video Game Grooves podcast episode finds itself bookended between "magicians making machine gun sounds" and "undeniable cello" somehow, so figure that out. We're joined by Chehade Boulos from Mana Wave Media to talk about the work his young label is doing and how he plans to win the three-way-standoff with VGG cohost Caleb and Hiroki Kikuta. We begin this extraordinary discussion with Anthony's feature of Magician Lord, which is itself one of the better-known releases on the extraordinary Neo Geo. We appreciate its preposterous gameplay and its equally awesome music score by Yuka Watanabe. The Neo Geo exists in its own special world, including its sound, and we immerse ourselves in the experience while sparing ourselves the financial burden of the singular game console. We then let Chehade entrance us with The First Tree, the first release from his burgeoning label. We spend time talking about the game itself and its rather low-key development philosophy, and discuss how the "cinematic" score by Josh Kramer (and cello by Tina Guo) elevate the entire thing to make it an unassuming hit across multiple platforms. We take a moment to discuss the relationship between the most rudimentary of creative work being done in video games and how music forms a synesthesia to become a new entity in your mind and experience. ...but that gets a little too deep so we head over to new releases and announcements to get you in on that dirty capitalism you love to hate. I have been lucky to have had some awesome guest mixes this year. The streak continues with this excellent modern classical mix called "Cello Mood Swings." It's an excellent collection of music that features the cello. Duh! This tracklist comes from loyal listener, Kevin, who was also responsible for last year's Japan themed mix - "Not Seeing is a Flower" Which you can find here - http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2020/07/not-seeing-is-flower.html Kevin collected a bunch of great tracks and I put them together as best I could and the result is pretty darn awesome. Here's what Kevin says about this mix: "The idea for this actually came from Tina Guo's haunting version of the Rains of Castamere (Game of Thrones). As I was putting the list together it suddenly dawned on me just how many women have chosen the cello as their main instrument. I tried to make it female only cello players but couldn't quite find enough tracks. The title, Cello mood swings, fits because as an instrument, the cello is brooding and melancholic. But it can be soothing and relaxing as well." Thanks for another great mix! Cheers! On this episode of the Geektown Behind The Scenes Podcast, I'm catching up with the wonderful and lovely friend of the show, composer Fil Eisler about his latest movie 'Thunder Force'.For those of you who haven't heard the six other times we've interviewed Fil, he is a muli-award-winning composer with projects ranging from big studio action pieces and comedies, to gritty independent films and hit television shows. He began his career as a touring musician, where he travelled, recorded and wrote with a multitude of artists, including Robbie Williams, with whom he has written a number of songs as well. As a tv composer, he has been the man behind the music for shows such as ‘Empire’, ‘Revenge’, ‘UnREAL’, and ‘What/If’, along with recent Netflix series 'Biohackers' and 'Outer Banks', both of which are due to return with 2nd Seasons, and the new Disney+ series 'Big Shot'. On the film side, he has scored movies such as ‘The Titan’, ‘CHIPS’, Marti Noxon’s ‘To the Bone’, the documentaries 'Newtown' and 'US Kids', and a number of Melissa McCarthy/Ben Falcone films including ‘Life of the Party’, ‘Superintelligence’, and their latest, which is the No 1 streaming movie in the USA, 'Thunder Force'.'Thunder Force' stars Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer as two childhood best friends who are reunite as an unlikely crime-fighting superhero duo when one invents a formula that gives ordinary people superpowers. It is an outrageously fun film, and Fil has created an outrageously kick-ass soundtrack to go with it.Teaming up with heavy metal legends such as Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Mr Bungle), Scott Ian (Anthrax), Corey Taylor (Slipknot), Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), alongside heavy metal cellist, Tina Guo, Fil put together something of a metal supergroup to create a sound they have been referring to as "Orchestral Metal". It is one of my favourite things Fil has created so far, and if you check out his Instagram feed, you'll see he had an outrageously fun time doing it too. I should also point out, this was all put together in the logistical nightmare of a global pandemic...It's always a pleasure to chat with Fil about his work, but it was especially interesting this time around as he discusses working with some of his childhood (and adulthood) heroes, collaborating again with the lovely Melissa McCarthy & Ben Falcone, and the issues with trying to record an orchestral soundtrack in the middle of a pandemic. Multimedia artist, modern-day Renaissance woman, and vocal powerhouse Sangeeta Kaur (Teresa Mai) is a singular talent. Sublime vocalist, charismatic performer, devotional spiritual practitioner, Sangeeta’s body of work is both cinematic in scope and accessible to the casual listener. In a world where we are all searching for inspiration, Sangeeta consistently delivers. Sangeeta pursued the formal study of music since she found refuge and even miracles through music at a young age. Teachers recognized her natural talent and gifted voice and encouraged and supported her through training and scholarships. Through their direction and her persistence and practice, Sangeeta earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Opera Performance from the Bob Cole Music Conservatory at California State University, Long Beach; and a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance from Boston Conservatory. While traveling the world as an operatic vocalist, Sangeeta was introduced to the power of spiritual mantra as well as the discipline of yogic practices. Through song, she started to develop a spiritual practice that continues to transform her life and influence her musical expression. As she says, “My life’s goal is to share music from a high vibrational place.” The high vibrational place shines through in every mantra Sangeeta chants, every aria she sings, and in every original composition she shares. Her body of work spans a wide range of genres and traditions showcasing her talents in composing and performing music ranging from soaring operatic arias to musical theater, New Age compositions, sacred mantra chants in multiple languages, and uplifting and accessible English singer-songwriter arrangements. So far she has released four award-winning albums: Niguma, Ascension, Mirrors, and Compassion. With a team of collaborators, Sangeeta produced, staged, and premiered the ambitious and acclaimed mantra opera Niguma, in Los Angeles. Her growing list of additional collaborations include work with noteworthy pop producer Narada Michael Waldon, Grammy Winner Peter Kater, Grammy winning singer Hila Plitmann, the Hungarian Studio Orchestra, Hungarian Studio Choir, Gerhard Joost, Nicholas Neidhardt, and more. Sangeeta brings new meaning to world music with her innovations, creativity, and in production and performance. Some of the many awards she has received include induction into the Indie Music Hall of Fame by the Indie Music Channel, Best New Female Artist of the Year and Best Classical Artist from the Indie Music Channel, multiple Peace Song Awards, and multiple Radio Song Awards, among others. Sangeeta is committed to being an independent artist who is serving in the creation of entertainment that inspires and progresses beyond genre to truly harmonize with the heart. Through awards and acclaim, Sangeeta is regularly recognized for the purity, clarity, and resonance in her voice. Sangeeta performs on stage regularly and is currently in the recording studio creating new work that merges classical and contemporary music with mantra and a range of lyrical traditions and approaches. The mainstream embrace of Sangeeta’s spiritual approach to music that is soulful and healing reinforces the meaning of this musical journey. Illuminance: Following last year’s multi-award-winning breakthrough, Compassion, classical crossover/New Age star Sangeeta Kaur returns with her most inspiring and diverse album yet, Illuminance. Produced by two-time Grammy Award-winning composer and pianist, Peter Kater, Illuminance is a journey through the universe within each and every one of us. Highlighted by Sangeeta’s stunning and angelic voice, each song takes listeners on a soothing and empowering trip from darkness to the discovery of their brightest light. Featuring the brilliant performances of Grammy-nominated cellist Tina Guo and Grammy-winning percussionist MB Gordy. https://www.sangeetakaurmusic.com ------------------------------------------------- Path 11 TV is Here! Classic video game consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System didn't just play games; they also played music. Their onboard synthesizers put strict limits on what kinds of music game composers could write, but from those limits came a cornucopia of musical themes that remain iconic even today. It's been a rapid fire few days in special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation into Russian collusion during the run-up to the 2016 presidential, with sentencing memos for Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen last week, followed by Cohen's sentencing this week. Also this week, we learned from federal prosecutors that the National Enquirer’s parent company, American Media Inc. has admitted to paying hush money to silence a woman who alleged an affair with Donald Trump in “concert with” the Trump Campaign, corroborating Cohen's account. And in a separate investigation, Maria Butina pleaded guilty to conspiracy, admitting that she tried to influence high profile Republicans and National Rifle Association members on behalf of Russia. All the while, President Donald Trump has doubled down, again referring to the investigation as a "witch hunt." But how do these latest developments fit into the larger picture of Mueller's investigation, and are we anywhere near the end? This week on Politics with Amy Walter from The Takeaway, we attempt to break it all down and examine what we know from all different angles, hearing from a reporter, a former FBI agent, a historian, a Democratic Congressman, and a conservative publisher during the course of the hour. Guests: Mark Mazzetti is the New York Times' Washington Investigative Correspondent. Asha Rangappa is a discussing Senior lecturer at Yale University's Jackson Institute for Global Affairs and a former FBI special agent. Julian Zelizer is a professor of History and Public Affairs at Princeton University. Congressman Adam Schiff is on track to become the Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Chris Buskirk is the publisher and editor of the conservative publication American Greatness. Opening music composed by Tina Guo. Check out her music here. All other music composed by Jay Cowit.

This is a bonus episode and part of Score: The Podcast's extended conversation with Tina Guo from May 22, 2018. Tina talks about performing and recording for Wonder Woman with Hans Zimmer, and how her upbringing in Shanghai, China, helped to nurture her musical passion, and the “metal” sound she’s been able to bring to her otherwise traditional music. Score: The Podcast welcomes Tina Guo, a virtuoso cellist who has played on more than 50 Hollywood film scores including Inception, Wonder Woman, Dunkirk, the Fast & Furious series, Sherlock Holmes, and many of the Marvel and DC films. She is also a featured artist on Hans Zimmer’s international concert tour, and current nominee for Female Artist of the Year by the 2018 Classic BRIT Awards, which celebrate the best of classical and crossover musicians for her recent solo album “Game On!” Robert, Kenny and Matt begin the show with an update on the new Leonard Bernstein biopic project Steven Spielberg has been secretly working on, and Bradley Cooper coming on to star and direct it, as well as the rival biopic on Bernstein recently announced starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Plus, we talk through why Leonard Bernstein’s life is such an interesting subject for biopics. Then Tina Guo comes on to discuss how she connected with Hans Zimmer for the ‘Hans Zimmer Live” international tour, and how she financed her own music video which eventually led to a meeting with Hans and Guy Ritchie on Sherlock Holmes, and then composer John Debney for Iron Man 2. In Behind the Score, composers Trevor Rabin, Lorne Balfe and Bear McCreary talks about one of LA’s unique landmarks: Billboards advertising films that aren’t finished yet. With tight schedules and heavy deadline pressure, the billboards literally loom over many composers in Hollywood. Then, Tina plugs in her electric cello “White Walker” to talk about her album “Game On!” and play some recognizable video game themes in a Score: The Podcast musical first. Lastly, Tina joins the guys to play Name That Score, where you — yes, you! — could be a winner! This week’s theme: Movies with Strong Female Leads.
