When killing is crucial, not just convenient... Choose the right tool for the task. Folks, I resisted addressing this trendy topic of using small calibers on big game for a long time. But I've had so many requests to do so, I can no longer take the easy road. Here's my blunt, fact- and science-based opinion on the practice of using small calibers loaded with target-type bullets on big game. ENJOY! FRIENDS! Today Mark Huelsing from Exo Mountain Gear and the Hunt Backcountry Podcast is on the show with us to talk about his recent Dall Sheep hunt up in Alaska. As you'll learn here shortly, that hunt was quite the adventure with lots of emotional ups and downs along the way. He eventually got it done and tagged a great looking sheep on his hunt, but that whole experience seemed like a giant roller coaster ride and sounds like it really tested the limits of human endurance as well. On this Final Friday episode, Jake sits down with Jeff Bloomquist. Jeff has been on the Hunt Backcountry Podcast a couple of times before and is a long-time friend of Exo. Jeff has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to bowhunting elk and has a lot of information to share on how to be successful and how he got to that point of success. Amongst some off-topic conversations, here are the questions Jake asked Jeff... - 1) How did you get out and hunt as much as you could when you were in your 20's? And now? - 2) How do you manage your time when you are hunting? Now and then? - 3) Did you do much training when you were younger? Has that changed over time? - 4) Being a successful hunter, what would you say your biggest weakness is while out hunting? - 5) What is one piece of advice you could give listeners (younger/older) who are looking to increase success? The difference between notching your tag or going home empty-handed from a hunt is usually determined by a few decisions or important moments. It is often only with hindsight that the outcome of the hunt can be understood by analyzing the decisive moments that led to the outcome — for good, or for bad. Reverse-Engineering Hunting Success is a new series on the Hunt Backcountry Podcast for the month of July. Each week we will speak with an experienced hunter and dissect a particular successful hunt, looking back to understand or "reverse engineer" the key decisions or other decisive moments that led to their success. On this week's episode, we speak with Jeff Bloomquist about a solo elk hunt where Jeff killed a 327" bull with his bow during an epic rut fest. But as you will hear, the hunt wasn't without mistakes or challenges. Many experienced and knowledgeable hunters often forget what it is like to be a beginner. A lesson they learned through experience in years past is now something they do by instinct, rather than forethought. Given that their knowledge is now ingrained into their subconscious, they can easily overlook the pieces of wisdom that would benefit newer hunters. While newer hunters “don't know what they don't know”, experienced hunters often know more than they may be able to communicate effectively. This gap between the experienced and the beginner is something we encouraged listeners of the Hunt Backcountry Podcast to reflect on, and then share their “What I wish I knew when I started” lessons with us. Today, we share those lessons from you, the listeners... Search the Podcast Archive: exomtngear.com/podcast Become an Exo Insider: exomtngear.com/newsletter Contact Us: podcast@exomtngear.com

After being a self-proclaimed "bow hiker" for 5 years, our guest filled his first archery elk tag. What made the difference? What can you learn from his story to help you spend less time as a "bow hiker" and increase your odds at filling more tags? We answer those questions in this episode with Hunt Backcountry Podcast listener, and now guest, Trevor White.

"Rare are the times in life when you can feel yourself growing as a person. Some are obvious, children being born, joining the military, certainly major life events. This hike however snuck into that same category. I was tested, I was broken, mentally defeated by pain through a war of attrition. I had so little skin left on my feet after day 2 I wanted to quit, it was all I think about. I wrestled with it alone for hours. Each step felt like walking on broken glass. I won't lie I actually broke down and cried at one point around mile 80 I was struggling so badly. The bottom line is I was able to pull from the guys around me when I was weak, I reached into a reserve tank I had never felt before. By mid morning day 3 I would've walked through fire to finish. I had to prove to myself and my guys I could do this, no matter what. EVERYONE should get to this level at some point and it doesn't matter where or how far it takes. One line from the @jockowillink podcast bounced in my head and seemingly fit this situation like a glove. “Human will is a superpower when called upon.” Amen to that." - Dan SolsmanThe above quote is what sparked this episode. It was written by my guest Dan Solsman, shortly after his experience on the Exo Mountain Gear "Death Hike." I found Dan when he came on the Hunt Backcountry Podcast to talk about this exact post and what it meant to him. After getting a taste for where his thoughts were, I decided to reach out for a chat. He kindly obliged and this podcast episode is the result. On this episode we talk about pushing our personal limits and why it's important to do so. This episode is dedicated to those of you who know what it's like to find your limits and hopefully it's an inspiration to those who are sitting back waiting for something to happen.Dan is a hell of a guy and has a straight forward way about him. Additionally, because Ryan wants to ensure that he can hunt the backcountry for decades to come, he invests in his health in a serious way. It is a great time of the year to get some inspiration and helpful health advice from Ryan, so that we can also pursue our passion in the outdoors for many years to come. You are miles-back and you just arrowed the animal you've been hunting for days-on-end. As the adrenaline and elation begin to subside, you quickly realize how much work you have ahead of you. Temperatures are rising and the clock is ticking. How do you process this animal and make sure that you harvest and preserve as much meat as possible? How do you get it back to the trailhead? How do you get it home? How do you get it in the freezer? Those are just some of the questions that we answer on this episode of the Hunt Backcountry Podcast with guest and author, David Draper. http://exomountaingear.com/46

In this episode of The Hunt Backcountry Podcast we speak with Matt Davis of Hoyt Archery and discuss what a bowhunter should look for when they're selecting a new bow — from Hoyt or from any of the numerous other great bow manufacturers on the market. We break down the anatomy of a bow and talk translate the technical specifications — such as speed ratings, brace heights, axle-to-axle length, etc. — and discuss how each one of these technical numbers should guide you in what you're looking for from your next bow. Additionally, we break down numbers traits of the draw cycle and explain terms such as "valley", let-off, and the "wall". Before we dive into that, we also have a brief chat about Matt's role as Hoyt's Pro Staff Manager and what a good industry Pro Staffer is and does. http://exomountaingear.com/19
