Are you self-sabotaging your success? You may have spent a decade in a particular field and now you want to bring your talents to a new community that could really use your help. Maybe you're now ready to fulfill your life purpose and share your message with the world. Or maybe you want to put out your best work possible. You want to start working on your dreams, you want to feel aligned, and you want to start building out your legacy. If you are an aspiring thought leader and you find yourself in any of those scenarios and you want to leave a mark on this world, then this conversation is relevant to you. Look around you right now. Who is out there putting out those TEDx talks that you wish you could put out? Who is launching a foundation? Who is an influencer right now? Who just quit their job to own their own business? If you see them as competition, don't! See that as evidence or signs from the universe that you just need to pick up the pace. You have one life, this is not a rehearsal. If it could happen to someone on LinkedIn, it can happen to you as well. When you see people online, living their absolute best lives this tends to breed jealousy. And jealousy is a terrible thing to focus on when you are trying to become a fearless thought leader. This notion that you might not have anything to celebrate is absolutely false. There is always something to celebrate about. The problem is that you're focusing on the wrong things. You're busy comparing yourself to someone else that you're not looking at what you are bringing to the table. At the end of the day, it's a mindset issue – and it's actually quite easy to fix. This means you have to get to a place where you're spending no time looking at everyone else and feeling jealous. Instead, pour out all your energy, time, and effort into becoming a fearless thought leader. Don't focus on why you're not winning or why you're not as successful as those people you see online. Instead, think that you can as well. Share this episode with aspiring thought leaders who are ready to create an impact and share their message to the world but still couldn't muster up the courage to take action. Now is the time to take a step forward! Highlights Gratitude: Be grateful for whatever you have right now – education, access to water, your comfy bed, etc. And these are things you might not have considered worthy of immense gratitude. There's so much to celebrate! Focus on everything you can celebrate in your life. Mindset: Stand guard in terms of what you let into your consciousness. Celebrate people who are winning and who are doing things you wish you could be doing. Action: Accept whatever is your reality but don't stop there. Choose to do something anyway. Empowerment: Decide at some point that you want to become a fearless thought leader more than playing a victim who just dreamt about becoming a fearless thought leader one day. Stop making excuses. Vision: Imagine a new world where you're pouring all of your energy into your future. What if you could move faster and in a forward direction? Change: You have a shot at what you want out of your life, but not if you continue to hold on to your current way of life. Not if you continue to feel angered by other people's successes and celebrations. And not if you continue to dismiss your own celebrations. Courage Makerspace: You need a proven, sustainable strategy that works with your human tendencies. The Courage Makerspace™ is built around our natural tendencies. Focus: Shift your focus on what you can do and the help you can get and know that your success is not impossible. Courage: Pour all of your energy into everything you should be doing in fulfilling your purpose, achieving your dreams, and becoming a fearless leader. Avoidance: A lot of people are procrastinating because they think they're not ready to become fearless leaders so they're not taking the steps forward. Accountability: Find a mentor, have a system that works and get the accountability necessary to boost courage. Self-sabotage: Stop self-sabotaging your dreams, your impact, and the ideal vision of the life you know you should be leading right now. Thoughts: We have about 60,000 thoughts or so a day. But most of the thoughts that we tell ourselves are just recycled. Those same thoughts tend to be recycling through your mind and limiting your impact. Life purpose: The thought leaders on my online powerful coaching program are those on a personal mission to fulfill their authentic life purpose. Checking in: If you see everyone else's priorities featured on your calendar and there's not any of your own on your calendar, take note of it. If you keep talking over and over to your friends about the things you didn't accomplish or complaining about everyone else's successes, those are data for you to consider. Investment: Where are you investing your limited time? are you investing your time watching everyone else live their life? Are you trying to figure out how to become a thought leader on your own? Time: Now is the only time that matters because people need your help right now more than ever. You need to show up and push through your hesitation, and learn how to overcome your fears and leverage your talents right now. “I'll figure out” is commonly thrown around these days – but did you know there's a hidden cost of saying it? In fact, trying to figure it all out on your own is the biggest mistake you can make as an aspiring thought leader. Today, I will talk about the hidden cost of saying I'll figure it out. This is especially important if you are serious about fulfilling your purpose. If you are at this point where you want to create something important – whether a podcast, documentary, memoir, TedX talk, video game, foundation, or even a movement – and despite knowing what you should do, you're not taking enough action. You're probably trying to figure out how to get out of your own way on your own. Yet, anxiety, imposter syndrome, procrastination and caring about what others think are holding you back. Then this episode is precisely for you. Now, saying “I'll figure it” out in and of itself is not a bad thing. It's being resourceful. If you look at the common characteristics of those who rise to the top as influencers and thought leaders who are respected and heard, the majority of them were resourceful to begin with. Ultimately, you don't know what you don't know if you have never attempted to be a thought leader before. Using an employee mindset to an entrepreneurial ambition is not going to cut it either. The bravery necessary to pull this off is unlike the risks that consultants and employers can shoulder. What happens if you are left to figure this out on your own is that you'll spin your wheels and waste a lot of time trying to reverse engineer what the best thought leaders are doing. Being resourceful to the point that you're pushing yourself and psyching yourself to do things that feel embarrassing, hard, and scary doesn't mean that you should. You don't need to turn a certain age like 50 or 60 to become an official thought leader, and then to finally fulfill your purpose. You don't need to waste time reinventing the wheel and forcing yourself to pull yourself together before becoming a thought leader. You don't need another courageous, motivational, nor mindset quote to get you over one hurdle. You don't need more marketing and sales tools online to help you work through the logistics of becoming a thought leader (if all you needed was more templates then you'd already be one). You need more courage to actually execute on the things that feel scariest, to step outside of your comfort zone, to get past rejections, and to move faster despite setbacks so you become unstoppable in the pursuit of your purpose. Why try to figure out things on your own and reinvent the wheel when I have already cracked the code for aspiring thought leaders? Also, share this with someone who is having a hard time doing everything it takes to become a fearless thought leader! Highlights Burnout: There are times when resourcefulness can backfire. Being too resourceful, if not done efficiently, can lead to you doing everything on your own and this leads to burnout. This could also impact your family's quality of life as well as the people around you. Being resourceful can get you in trouble especially if you're trying to do something you haven't done before. Mentorship: There's a lot that you do not get to see behind-the-scenes that your favorite thought leaders had to do to rise to the top. They, too, needed a guide or mentor to speed up their timelines or boost their motivation despite their losses or to show them best practices to kick-ass in life. Courage: This is the missing piece that stops even people with years of experience from stepping up and saying they have an important message to share and that they should be heard. That's what distinguishes a fearless thought leader from someone who someday dreams about fulfilling their purpose on their terms. Take action: Stop waiting for the world to ask for your insights and recommendations. It's your duty to find meaning in your life and to bring attention to the causes, mission, solutions you know you have been called to lead. Passion: You need incredible passion to do what's necessary to share your message or solution with the world and for it to make a real impact. Faking the funk is not going to be enough. Strategy: If you haven't picked up the pace to become a fearless thought leader, it's isn't because you lack the right marketing tips and hints. You can find those things online. But what's not there is a guide who can boost your courage and overcome your fears. Recalibrate: It takes courage to reset some things when setting out to fulfill your purpose. Resilience: It takes several steps that must be modeled, taught, rehearsed, and enhanced over a specific duration of time so that you can get to the point that being knocked down from a pedestal won't stop you from pressing forth. Anxiety: You need to change your relationship with your anxiety so that you can take the biggest leaps available as early as possible. Intuition: You have to regain access to your intuition so that you can go put yourself out there and be the loudest bullhorn for your mission, cause, or solution. Network: Confidently engage with thought leaders and build powerful relationships before you need them. Creativity: Regain access knowing how to use your imagination to help seek growth opportunities that will help define you as a thought leader. Authenticity: Stop caring about what others think when it comes to your voice and quirky, imperfect, real personality (many people sanitize themselves when first aspiring to become a thought leader and this doesn't work). Emotions: Tell your story in a way that evokes strong feelings and gets people excited about your mission, cause, or solution. Trust: Learn to trust yourself again so that you can pick new and relevant standards for yourself and execute with consistency. There are three toxic fears that are ruining your odds of becoming a thought leader or authority in your field – the fear of judgment, the fear of being found out, otherwise known as imposter syndrome, and the fear that you won't be able to do anything big due to anxiety. This episode is specifically for someone who could use more courage to create authentic content to connect with power players who may feel out of your league for now, and also folks who want to communicate their message – the message on your heart with a dose of realness. These three fears are going to sabotage your most well-intentioned efforts, especially when it comes to doing anything that might currently feel outside of your comfort zone. They can cripple even the most well intentioned, aspiring thought leader like yourself, from putting yourself out there. Whether you want to deliver a TEDx talk, or get in front of camera and do a video on Instagram, or maybe write a LinkedIn article that really showcases your expertise – all of this can be petrifying if you don't know how to overcome those three toxic fears. If you don't know how to overcome these fears, you will totally stop yourself from even showing up as an authority in your field. Then the odds of you doing what you want to do to become a thought leader will cease to exist. Or worse, you'll be putting out there a diluted form of your authentic self. So let's dig into why these three fears exist and how you can work around them to start putting yourself out there faster and more authentically. I have personally coached so many people who had every single right under the sun to call themselves an authority in their fields. These are people who have brought decades of personal or professional experiences to the table. Yet even they didn't dare to put themselves out there until they got with me, and because they had these persistent and nagging thoughts. If you continue to wait for someone else to say you're an authority in your field, then you're ultimately putting your destiny in someone else's hands. Ultimately, these three fears can be overcome if you're using the right processes to rebuild your courage muscles, one that includes a bit of faith in your own ability to harness the power of your imagination to generate the bravery you need to extinguish those three fears. Share this with someone who has a message to share with the world but is struggling with these fears so they can finally move from feeling powerless to feeling powerful, and be the change they want to create in this world. Highlights Limiting belief: It's a thought or belief, or worse, a conviction that you might even confuse as a proven fact that gets in the way of living life on your terms. Courage: My coaching program called Courage Makerspace(™) is centered on helping aspiring thought leaders who need to overcome their fears so they can have the courage to connect, communicate and create something incredible. Challenge: The hardest piece of the puzzle to find and put in its place is being able to identify the precise limiting belief that is holding you back. Barrier: If you are using your finite energy to battle limiting beliefs instead of applying that energy to pursue your dream of becoming a thought leader, that is a huge impediment. Self-awareness: When you have those doubts about how others think about what you do, self-awareness is key. Acceptance: Would you rather just accept that you're going to be judged or focus your energy on battling with judgment from other people? Instead, focus your energy on taking steps forward towards becoming a thought leader. Personal experience: If you have experiences that would add value to a particular space, don't discount the personal experiences that might completely outweigh the professional experiences of anyone in that field. Imposter syndrome: Find it within yourself to move forward even if you don't feel like you're totally qualified as a thought leader yet. Trust: People wait for something before they think they're qualified enough to start calling themselves thought leaders. But you need to learn how to trust yourself again. Cognitive dissonance: You can't continue to wait until you feel like you are as qualified and influential before you can start rubbing elbows with people in your circles. Change: Be aware and catch yourself every time you feel like an imposter and you hesitate to take a move in the right direction. Change your relationship with your limiting beliefs and take a second look at your excuses. Anxiety: Change your relationship with anxiety and change the amount of trust that you have in your own ability to work through whatever anxiety pops up. Impact: This is not just about you, but the people you want to help. Anxiety is not going anywhere. It's not disappearing. So make it work for you. Want to be a COURAGEOUS thought leader? Many classrooms and schools rely on systems of punishments and rewards, and these systems can be especially common for children with special needs. Punishment and reward systems provide external motivation to behave appropriately. They don’t teach social and emotional skills or problem solving, and they rely on judgment rather than personal responsibility. They foster separation instead of inspiring unity and connection. With Conscious Discipline, the focus is on blending effective SEL, school culture and classroom management to educate the whole child and teach new skills. This approach leads to increased connection, collaboration and compassion—and to lasting behavioral changes. Of course, making this shift often feels scary or overwhelming at first. In this episode, Melissa McComb, the Director of Special Education in the Litchfield Elementary School District, talks about her district’s experience with moving from a points system to skills tracking. Despite initial doubt, Melissa and her district stayed the course and experienced phenomenal results. Listen in to learn more about Melissa’s journey and hear her top tips for other school districts. Essential Takeaways • One strategy to increase both teacher understanding and teacher buy-in of new systems is to involve teachers in their creation and development. In Melissa’s district, a group of teachers helped build the new skill tracking system. • It’s important to check in with teachers throughout the process: How did that feel? How’s it going for you? What’s holding you back from doing it this way? • Since shifting to teaching skills, Melissa’s district has experienced an 87% decrease in CPI holds and restraints. Students and staff feel calmer, secondary trauma is down, and a compassionate family culture is emerging. • As the district’s understanding of Conscious Discipline expanded, they revisited and revised their new processes again and again. This is why we often call Conscious Discipline a journey: It is an ongoing cycle of personal growth, reflection, adjustment and action. In Melissa's words:I’m Melissa McGraw, founder of The Creative Potential, and I’ve helped brands gain millions of website visitors. Nope That’s not a typo. Millions.I’ve helped brands grow their organic audience by millions, and brands I’ve worked with have multiplied their organic search by triple digits in a matter of months. I’m bringing all of that big-brand experience to help creative entrepreneurs boost their online presence, so they can make the impact and the money they want. You see, I kind of fell into the world of SEO when I started writing copy for Amazon over 9 years ago. I openly admit to being an analytics dork, so the psychology of why people search for certain phrases or keywords fascinates me. That fascination led me to create over 100,000 SEO friendly product listings that are bringing in the dollars on Amazon today. But hey you’re not Amazon, so why should you care? Well…because I have been right where you are. You’ve created this amazing, life-improving product or service, and now you need to bring in the eyeballs (and credit card digits) to actually BUY IT. Well, I’m the SEO wizard who’s going to do the hard work for you no matter if you have a product or service-based business and get you more clients, web traffic and sales!Links:To learn more about me or how we can work together head on over to my websitethecreativepotential.com. Today, we’re talking about co-dependency. In my field of work, co-dependency shows up a lot. I have this client, whom we’ll call Melissa (though that is not her real name), who was really struggling and by the time she came to me, she was diagnosed with six different clinical diagnoses. And her mom was someone that many would consider overbearing or a co-dependent. Whenever Melissa would come into my clinic to visit me, her mother would bombard her with constant calls, updates, and emails. But, the thing is, I don’t think Melissa’s mom was ‘a co-dependent’; I think she was acting co-dependently. Whether this is semantic to you or you have been that family member who has been called co-dependent, I highly recommend that you stay tuned in for this one as we dive deeper into what it means to be co-dependent, why these behavioral patterns exist at all, and how we can help others to overcome and move past this co-dependent behaviors and mindset. Topics Discussed: [:42] About today’s topic: co-dependency, and a story about a client of mine. [2:35] More about this term, ‘co-dependent.’ [3:22] My perspective on Melissa’s ‘co-dependent’ mom. [3:51] The three components I’m going to break down in this episode (on co-dependency): what does it even mean to say somebody is co-dependent? Why do these behavioral patterns exist? And how do we help others overcome and get past these co-dependent behaviors? [4:10] How co-dependency is defined and how it first came about. [9:40] Why do these co-dependency behavioral patterns exist? [13:24] How we “cured” Melissa’s mom of her co-dependent behaviors, and why it is incredibly important that we keep it sub-clinical rather than a full-on, clinical disorder. [15:55] How do we measure dysfunction in a couple or a pair of people where this co-dependent pattern of behavior works well for them? [17:04] In Melissa’s and her mother’s story, did co-dependency actually end up serving them? [18:49] What is important to know if you’re struggling or you know someone who is struggling. [20:10] If this was helpful for you or somebody you know, take a screenshot of this podcast, share it on social media, tag me, and let me know how it resonated for you! A whore’s career was usually short-lived. Women who began selling their bodies at age 20 often stopped when they turned 30 just because their looks started to fade. In Melissa's case she be gan working at age 15 in New York City which lasted for 25 years. She has since left the life of sex work and lives a normal life and has put that life life long behind her. Have you ever been hurt through your time in ministry? Do you wonder how to weave faith into the day-to-day operations of your business? What role does obedience play when you’re processing hard times while growing your business? In this episode, I talk with virtual tax advisor Melissa Whaley about what leadership looks like when you’re processing ministry hurts plus how our faith grows as we lead our businesses. Simple ways to weave your faith into your business: Share principles of what Jesus taught. In Melissa’s case, she shares about the importance of paying taxes and being honest. Don’t be ashamed to share your faith and talk about how God is working in your life. Melissa will share with others God’s view on money. Encourage people to grow in their faith. Melissa does this by encouraging people to be good steward of their business and personal finances. Processing ministry hurts Anyone who has gone through a church split or left a church knows that it’s emotionally difficult to process. After going through a split at her church, Melissa shared these lessons: Remember that it takes time to heal, trust, and start relationships again. You may need a change of pace like a house church. Obey what God asks you to do even if you don’t feel like doing it. Evaluate whether visiting a spiritual director might be a fit for you. Be kind to yourself as you adjust from having a leadership role to simply attending on a Sunday morning. Melissa’s book recommendations: Daring Greatly* by Brene Brown Rising Strong* by Brene Brown Key Quotes from episode: “If you have other people watching you and following your example, you’re a leader.” “God can equip you to lead in a small or large capacity.” “My purpose is not to make as much money as possible, but to serve people well and to help them and to weave my faith into my business." Melissa: My name is Melissa. I started the blog called Living In the Wait and the URL is livinginthewait.com. In this episode Michelle is joined once again by the gifted Mrs. Melissa Montiel, MS CCC-SLP, (see Episode 14 “Banishing Confusion for Clefts”), from the Medical University of South Carolina and the Evelyn Tramell Institute for Voice and Swallowing. In Melissa’s second lecture, we address both the speech component of VPI (velopharyngeal insufficiency), but also the more elusive and often misunderstood swallowing aspect of VPI. Sit back in awe as Melissa educates colleagues about signs and symptoms that would warrant a VPI evaluation and the steps involved during the VPI eval. If you have a patient with nasal regurgitation, then this might be perfect for you!
This week's episode is an extraordinary one! In it, you'll get to journey with Melissa during her Life Between Lives regression. This is a special, longer episode, so I encourage you to make time for it. Break it into parts if necessary because it's packed with fascinating and enlightening information. In a Life Between Lives regression, aka Spiritual Regression, not only do you experience a past life but also what happens after you die. In Melissa's experience, you'll get to hear her describe what happens at the moment of death and beyond. This includes the life review process, the lessons from that lifetime, as well as what one is meant to learn and experience in this lifetime. You don't want to miss this memorable glimpse into the afterlife! I can't wait to hear your comments after you go through this experience with Melissa. If you have questions for Melissa or me, we’ll address those in a future episode - so please submit your questions using the contact form on http://www.afterlifetv.com/contact/. As always, leave your comments on AfterlifeTV.com, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. And if you're watching via YouTube, I hope you enjoy Melissa's photography. Until next time, shine on!
