Most self-help advice makes me cringe. Vision boards, “manifesting,” and the whole daily affirmation thing? Yeah, I've always put that in the woo-woo category. But lately, I've been stuck in my head, wrestling with self-doubt, perfectionism, and the classic case of overthinking everything. So I decided to try something that made me deeply uncomfortable: staring at myself in the mirror and saying things like “I am enough.” And no, I didn't spontaneously combust from secondhand embarrassment. In this episode, I test daily affirmations for a week, even the corny ones, and rope my wife into writing a few that are, well, questionable at best. For more go to: www.scottmlynch.comLevel up your life by joining my Patreon where you'll get exclusive content every week and more badass offerings (rips t-shirt in half, Hulk Hogan style, and runs around the room). And/or…Unlock practical and tactical insights on how to master your mindset and optimize your happiness directly to your inbox. If you're a glutton for punishment and want more swift kicks in the mind follow me on social:InstagramYouTubeLeave a review and tell me how I suck so I can stop doing that or you can also tell me about things you like. I was recently reading my notebook where I collect thoughts and ideas from some good things I hear or read about in books and other places, and came across a passage from Haruki Murakami's book, “Kafka on the Shore.” It is one of my favourite passages from all the books I have read, and while I was reading it one more time, I thought I would turn my thoughts into this episode of The Inner Game podcast. This is one of those passages that has always shaken something deep within me, and this time was no different. This passage speaks to the storms we all face—those intense, unavoidable challenges that seem to come out of nowhere and leave us questioning everything. USEFUL RESOURCES: 1. Summary In this episode, I talk about one of the biggest flaws in content creation and how it prevents people from being successful. I emphasize the importance of building a content machine and creating relatable content. I point out that many marketers forget that they are speaking to human beings looking for solutions to their problems and advise business owners and marketers to be vulnerable and share their struggles to connect with their audience. They can build trust and establish a strong connection with their customers by being relatable and real. Takeaways The number one thing that prevents people from being successful in marketing is trying to be more than they are. It is important to be relatable and show that you understand your audience's struggles. People connect with people who are similar to them and who are vulnerable. Sharing your own story and struggles can help build trust and connection with your audience. Avoid portraying an image of perfection or unattainable success. Instead, be real and human and show that you still have struggles and problems. Continuously create relatable stories by documenting your experiences and finding teachable moments that can help your audience. Building the know, like, and trust factor is crucial in marketing. Throughout the interview, Jacqueline and Shannah engage in a lively and informative conversation that will resonate with anyone interested in improving their financial well-being and achieving financial freedom. Takeaways Money decisions are often driven by our emotions rather than just math.  Gender equality is crucial in the financial industry.  Some common money myths need to be debunked, such as the belief that money is only about math, that achieving goals is solely about saving money, and that being debt-free is always the best option.  The course, "Un-F Your Relationship with Money", can help individuals overcome these myths and develop a healthier relationship with money. Being vulnerable and open about money mistakes is important for personal growth and learning.  Values such as intentionality and curiosity drive decision-making in the financial realm.  Money dates, or intentional meetings to discuss finances, can help individuals take control of their money and make empowered decisions. Recommended money moves include understanding one's mindset, improving financial literacy, and setting goals with a spending plan.  Successful investing requires patience, loyalty, and forgiveness.  Improving financial literacy can be achieved through podcasts, finding a money mentor, and being mindful of what one pays attention to.  The course, "Un-F Your Relationship with Money", offers a supportive community and practical tools for personal growth. PODCAST CONFESSION: Sometimes I Need Help Too Welcome to Join Up Dots, the podcast that believes life should be a fun-filled adventure every day. Hosted by David Ralph, this hit podcast encourages listeners to tap into their talents, skills, and God-given gifts to create the life they dream of. However, even a host full of enthusiasm has moments of vulnerability, and David opens up about feeling depressed lately, which is unusual for him. He shares that he has always suppressed his emotions and presented a facade of happiness to the world. David reflects on the importance of being authentic and genuine, even when life isn't all rainbows and sunshine. Society often values projecting positivity and strength, but it's essential to allow oneself to feel and express negative or vulnerable emotions. Suppressing emotions can lead to isolation and hinder the development of authentic relationships. He realizes that he needs to surround himself with real-life people and build meaningful connections to combat feelings of loneliness. David reaches out to his listeners, asking if anyone has gone through similar experiences and invites them to share their advice. In conclusion, he emphasizes that while Join Up Dots typically promotes positivity, it's equally important to be authentic and acknowledge struggles. He wants to connect with his audience on a deeper emotional level and invites them to support him on his journey to self-discovery. If you've resonated with this episode and have advice or experiences to share, reach out to David at . Thank you for listening, and remember, life may not always be perfect, but together, we can navigate the ups and downs. Join Up Dots will be back with more inspiring interviews soon. Success in one's career does not always translate to a fulfilling personal life, and the same can be true in reverse. Being mindful of how time and energy are allocated between work and family can lead to a healthier and more balanced lifestyle. This requires intention and prioritization, ensuring that both personal and professional commitments receive the necessary attention and focus. During the podcast, Cory Carlson shares his experiences with struggling to find balance in his own life as a leader. He emphasizes the importance of being intentional in choosing what to prioritize and understanding that saying yes to one thing often means saying no to another. Through his own self-reflection and executive coaching, Carlson found greater balance, leading to personal growth and increased revenue professionally. He encourages leaders to be mindful of their physical, emotional, and mental well-being, spend time with family, and pursue a sense of purpose in both work and life. Managing Sacrifices as a Team It is crucial for leaders to recognize that every decision made has consequences, and sometimes, sacrifices are necessary to achieve certain goals. To maintain balance and harmony in professional and personal relationships, it is important to communicate openly and honestly about these sacrifices and collectively manage expectations regarding them. In the conversation with Mickey Anderson, Cory Carlson shares his thoughts on the importance of communication, particularly within the context of personal relationships. He discusses how to open conversations with his spouse regarding goals and expectations played a significant role in managing the sacrifices they made as a team. Carlson stresses the need for sharing both the highs and the lows, fostering trust and resilience in personal relationships by allowing family members to build coping skills and understand challenges better. "It's hard to compete with someone when they're having fun." - Mickey Anderson Developing a Vision Statement A clear and inspiring vision statement is an instrumental tool for businesses and individuals alike. It helps provide direction and focus on the organization's mission, ensuring that all efforts are aligned toward a common goal. A well-crafted vision statement not only serves as a guide for decision-making but also creates a sense of purpose and motivation for employees and stakeholders. Cory Carlson highlights the importance of having a compelling vision statement during the podcast, referencing his own journey to develop a personal vision centred around connecting people to greater performance and a more significant purpose. With this vision in mind, Carlson found that not only did his sales team's revenue improve, but the process became much more enjoyable for all involved. He encourages leaders to create their own vision statements as part of a broader strategy to prioritize work-life balance and achieve personal and professional success. Controlling the Controllables To cope with the ups and downs of life, it is essential for individuals to focus on the factors within their control and release the concerns and worries about things they cannot change. This strategy helps to manage stress and anxiety while still allowing for personal and professional growth. Throughout the podcast, Cory Carlson emphasizes the need for leaders to focus on the things they can control in their lives. He encourages individuals to examine their schedules critically and make strategic decisions about where to focus their time and energy. By concentrating on the "controllables," leaders can make impactful changes and reduce unnecessary stress related to factors beyond their control. "The wins at work don't feel as good when you're not winning at home." - Cory Carlson Rise and Go Building up the courage and confidence to face challenges and disappointments is a significant aspect of personal and professional growth. When setbacks occur, it is important to remain resilient and push forward toward goals, using learned strategies to rise and overcome obstacles. Cory Carlson, in his conversation with Mickey Anderson, shares his experience of dealing with setbacks after launching his coaching and speaking business just before the pandemic hit. He discusses how facing the loss of over 35% in revenue required courage, resilience, and the utilization of the very strategies he teaches his clients as an executive coach. By facing these challenges head-on with persistence and determination, leaders can find success even in the face of adversity. The path to vulnerability doesn't make sense if you believe being vulnerable means you're weak or you'll feel exposed to a cruel world. Yes, there are people you can't be vulnerable around. But there are also those you can and maybe should be if you want to develop closer bonds.   Vulnerability can be the scariest but most freeing thing to do. Don't waste your time trying to be someone you're not because you end up with a lingering drain that never goes away.
