British punk trio and International Clash Day alums Big Joanie are releasing this sophomore record Back Home on November 4th via Thurston Moore and Eva Prinz's Daydream Library Series (UK) and Kill Rock Stars in the US. Ahead of its release, they've dropped a string of singles including “Happier Still” and our Song of the Day, “In My Arms.” Led by a rambling guitar, the nostalgic track looks back on a past relationship with regret and melancholy. “I've compromised too many times /In my life,” sings Stephanie Phillips. “One day I'll make the great escape /And send another you away /But now I dream /Of you in my arms.” Frontwoman Stephanie Phillips said this of the song in a statement: “At this point I was getting tired of living in London and dreaming about another life. It's about knowing you should go another way in life but you end up dreaming about the road you've already travelled down even though you know it won't take you where you need to go.” On the flip side, the Lydia Garret-directed video for the track is joyful in celebrating queer love and friendships. Focusing on a group of teens over the course of an exhilarating day where they explore a theme park, have a bonfire on the beach, and finish off with a personal dance party with Big Joanie as the entertainment. Ibibio Sound Machine - "Electricity," a 2021 single on Merge. Just about three years ago, when the world was in a very different place, KEXP celebrated International Clash Day by venturing across the pond to London for a showcase of upcoming artists that radiate the spirit of the Clash in vibrant, diverse ways. One of the most electrifying performances over those four days came from electro Afro-funk ensemble Ibibio Sound Machine. Fusing the polyrhythms of West African funk, highlife, disco, and post-punk, the Nigeria-born, London-based band light stages figuratively on fire with their genre-bending sound. This fall, the band released their first single since their 2019 LPDoko Mienwith a title fitting for a band with this much kinetic energy. “Electricity” sees Ibibio Sound Machine team up with Hot Chip for a pulsing electronic track with elements of West African instrumentation. ISM vocalist Eno Williams had this to say about “Electricity”: “Even in trying times, ‘without love, there's no electricity.' This one started out as an idea to mix Afrobeat with Giorgio Moroder–style synth vibes. The end section with Alfred's korego (Ghanaian 2-stringed folk guitar) solo was already there when we got into the studio, but then we added the big kick drum that happens underneath and Owen from Hot Chip's crazy drum machine percussion at the end, which gave it a futuristic Afro feel when mixed with the more talking drum parts.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

JOHN - "Šibensko Powerhouse" from the 2021 album Nocturnal Manoeuvres on Brace Yourself Records / Pets Care Records. As one YouTuber comically remarked on the footage of JOHN's Live on KEXP Performance from 2019's International Clash Day celebration, “The best band with the worst SEO.” And they're not wrong, trying to find a band that goes by the most common English first name in the world on the internet is an incredibly difficult task. But once discovered, the riches that the duo rewards you with are plentiful. Made up of John Newton and Johnny Healey, the duo are an absolute force to be reckoned with. Their latest album Nocturnal Manoeuvres, released in October, takes the explosive riffs the two Johns have a penchant for and spreads them out into maximalist, psychedelic new territories. Our Song of the Day is the album's early single “Šibensko Powerhouse,” a turbulent thumper that features vocals from none other than IDLES bassist Adam Devonshire for an extra layer of fury.  “The lyrics came from a now-distant memory of visiting a festival in another country,” offers drummer and lead vocalist Newton. “I remembered standing alone in baking 40 degree heat on the hillside outside of my apartment – only to hear a familiar song echoing live in the distance from over the hill's crest. It was a once in lifetime moment that just stuck with me, a reminder of my small scale in the greater scheme of the world.” Nocturnal Manoeuvres follows 2019's Out Here on the Fringes. Somos antirracistas. Somos anti-violencia. Somos pro-creatividad. Estamos en contra de la ignorancia. (Joe Strummer). Vamos ya. Should I stay or should I go?

El International Clash Day. Police on my back.

Y hacerlo además a nivel internacional y simultáneamente.

We hung out at a doughnut shop with event organizers Ian Lodewyks and Ben Rodecker, both of whom have long been involved with the Strummer tribute events -- Ian as a member of [Sub City](http:///www.facebook.com/SubCity-Dwellers-6034099373/) and Ben as a member of [The Crackdown](http://thecrackdown.bandcamp.com/releases). They're both performing at the tribute this year as well. Ian's part of an all-Clash tribute act called Guns of Wolseley, and Ben's back with a newly-reunited Crackdown, almost a decade after their initial breakup. The show also features Selkirk's finest, The Farrell Bros., as well as The Murder Birds. This episode is brought to you by a special Valentine's Day screening of [Birdemic: Shock and Terror](http://www.facebook.com/events/408106542977972/), presented by our friends at the Park Theatre alongside CINEFILE and hosted by comedian Tyler Penner.
