The Florida State Seminoles reached 5-0 on the season after a win over the Virginia Tech Hokies. This weekend, they'll host the Syracuse Orange in an attempt to reach bowl eligibility. Each week, as part of our Line of Scrimmage series, we'll be speaking with members of the beat that covers FSU's upcoming opponent, getting all the details from those who know those teams best. The Syracuse season started off hot with a 4-0 record but will be headed into Tallahassee after back-to-back losses. To help us catch up on the up and down season for the Orange, we'll be joined by Christian De Guzman of SBNation's NunesMagician, who tackled the following questions: Let's start with head coach Dino Babers. I like Babers, I could start each day watching his locker room speech after the Virginia Tech upset. He's 4-2 on the season, after a 7-6 record last year. What's the overall feelings with Babers at the helm for Syracuse? Are you happy with where he has the program? While last year saw quarterback Garrett Shrader and the Orange struggle against Florida State, it was a different story in 2021 when Shrader shredded the Seminoles with 137 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. This year, he ran wild against Purdue but has been pretty contained, at least on the ground, in the other games. Where do you feel Shrader has improved overall this year? And where does he still struggle?  Sticking to the backfield, Sean Tucker is gone and in his place is LeQuint Allen. The sophomore is averaging just over 4.5 yards per carry this season. Is Allen the big bruising back or the speedy/shifty type? Also, any other names to know from the backfield? As far as receiving, Shrader appears to have spread the ball around pretty well so far with eight players catching at least six passes. Who are the names to know at receiver or tight end? And has the group taken any steps back with the Oronde Gadsden injury? Last question on offense, Shrader has been sacked 14 times this season and the offensive line has suffered it's fair share of injuries with the loss of David Wohlabaugh and Kalan Ellis. What's your thoughts on the big guys up front? Flipping over to defense, through the first four games, the Orange defense held up well before allowing 31 to Clemson and 40 to North Carolina. Would you put that on just the step up in competition or has the defense taken a step back overall? Let's go front to back on defense. Caleb Okechukwu is following up his breakout season of seven sacks with two so far this season. He's joined by Terry Lockett, Kevon Darton, and others on this defensive front. What does this line do well? And is there an area where it has struggled this year?  I love a good linebacker name and Marlowe Wax is a fantastic one. What's the defensive junior backer bring to this team? And how have you felt the second line has performed this year? Finally, the secondary. The Orange saw quite a bit of transition in the off-season in this position group. Garrett Williams is in the NFL, Duce Chestnut is at LSU, Ja'Had Carter is at Ohio State. On today's episode of "Land-Grant Uncut," we are bringing you unedited audio from Ohio State head football coach Ryan Day and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles from their respective Tuesday, Sept. 5 press conferences. The pair of coaches discussed their impressions of the 23-3 victory over Indiana on Saturday. While Day noted that the offense would have to improve for the team to reach its goals, Knowles was overall pleased by his unit's performance, aside from a few third-down plays. Both coaches said that the new clock rules hampered their ability to rotate players in more, including Devin Brown and Xavier Johnson on offense and C.J. Hicks and Ja'Had Carter on defense. Ohio State's first game of the 2023 season is 10 days away, but the Buckeyes still don't have a quarterback. With it now appearing likely that Ohio State's quarterback competition will continue into the start of the season, we start this week's episode of Real Pod Wednesdays by weighing what we make of the Buckeyes still not picking a starter, when they must settle in on one quarterback and who will hold the edge if the competition continues into the season.Of course, quarterback isn't the only position where players have been competing for a starting spot or spots in preseason camp. Josh Simmons, Carson Hinzman and Josh Fryar appear to have won starting jobs on the offensive line and Sonny Styles has solidified himself as a starter at safety, but the free safety job remains up for grabs between Ja'Had Carter, Josh Proctor and Malik Hartford. We discuss all of that on this week's show as well as the buzz that keeps growing louder surrounding Carnell Tate, Ohio State's excitement about second-year defensive ends Kenyatta Jackson and Caden Curry and C.J. Hicks emerging as the potential leader to play significant snaps at Jack.We also discuss what we make of Ohio State selecting only three captains this year, discuss our picks for which regular-season games we‘re most and least confident Ohio State will win and share our thoughts on Ohio State staying within the Big Ten with its new presidential hire. The full rundown of topics we're discussing this week: 0:37: Ohio State still needs to pick a starter, but it's a good thing to feel good about two quarterbacks 4:20: Ohio State needs to have a firm starter before the Notre Dame game, and ideally sooner 10:42: In-season quarterback competitions have worked out at other schools in recent years 12:46: A quarterback competition continuing into the season typically favors the younger player 17:59: Ohio State can't let the quarterback competition get in the way of winning games 20:49: There's no longer any doubt Sonny Styles will play a huge role this year 23:54: We still see Ja'Had Carter as the likely starting free safety, but Malik Hartford is making a move 28:34: Ohio State seems to have its starting offensive line and growing confidence in that unit 35:02: Kenyatta Jackson, Caden Curry generating excitement as second-string defensive ends 36:39: Carnell Tate making real push to play a big role as a true freshman 41:25: C.J. Hicks and Cody Simon should both play regularly, and Hicks could lead the way at Jack 45:17: Only three captains was surprising, but it's not a bad thing 51:26: Who we‘re most confident Ohio State will beat and which games we see as the biggest tests 1:04:01: Five-star pairing of Eddrick Houston, Justin Scott a crucial recruiting win for Larry Johnson 1:08:24: Ohio State's new president already knows the Big Ten and loves sports 1:12:22: Best wishes to Sammy Sasso, who we hope to see back on the wrestling mat soon

Ohio State is nearly one week into preseason camp and two more teams are leaving the Pac-12 for the Big Ten.That gives us plenty to talk about on this week's episode of Real Pod Wednesdays as Chase Brown joins Dan Hope to discuss the most notable things we've seen and heard during the first six days of preseason camp and weigh the pros and cons of the Big Ten continuing to expand by adding Oregon and Washington in addition to USC and UCLA.(Note: This podcast was recorded before Gene Smith announced he will retire as Ohio State's athletic director next year.)The timeline for this week's conversation: 1:51: It was fun to see fans at practice for a change, and we hope to see that continue 3:53: Sonny Styles and Ja'Had Carter getting first-team reps isn't a surprise, but where they lined up was 8:05: If Styles starts at nickel, we expect Cameron Martinez or a cornerback to play some snaps there too 14:08: Josh Proctor, Malik Hartford also among candidates to be in the “six plus one” at safety 18:49: We don't know how much Buckeyes will rotate in secondary, but the good news is they can 21:04: Ohio State doesn't necessarily need C.J. Hicks to play, but it should still find a role for him 33:46: Kourt Williams doesn't have a clear path to playing time, but linebacker should fit his game well 38:54: Tywone Malone looks increasingly poised to make immediate impact at defensive tackle 41:49: Zen Michalski takes the first reps at right tackle, but that doesn't mean he's won the starting job 47:06: We haven't seen enough yet to draw any conclusions about the quarterback competition 54:06: Adding Oregon and Washington is a win for Big Ten football, but not college sports as a whole 1:00:45: The Big Ten's next round of expansion seems likely to be schools from the ACC 1:05:56: The Big Ten is in a position of power now, but it wasn't always guaranteed to go that way 1:11:38: More competition in Big Ten will ensure regular season still matters even with CFP expansion 1:18:46: FBS football should have its own governing body, but that won't undo damage to other sports

If you could pick only 22 Ohio State football players to go win a game for you against 22 other Ohio State football players, which Buckeyes would you choose? That's the question we were tasked with answering on this week's episode of Real Pod Wednesdays as we held our annual Eleven Warriors preseason team draft, going head-to-head to pick the best possible lineups for a hypothetical intrasquad game. The ground rules were as follows: Each of us had 22 total picks to draft 11 offensive players and 11 defensive players. Offensively, we were required to draft one quarterback, five offensive linemen and five skill-position players (wide receivers, running backs or tight ends). Defensively, we were required to draft at least three defensive linemen, two linebackers and four defensive backs with the other two picks being flexible, though we both opted to draft four defensive linemen and five defensive backs.Griffin won the pre-draft coin toss which allowed him to choose between the No. 1 overall pick or the second and third picks, and he chose to pick first. Following the No. 1 pick, we alternated selections two at a time in a snake-draft format until we both filled up our 22-man rosters. Our picks:1. Marvin Harrison Jr., WR (Griffin)2. After that, we rank all eight Ohio State transfer acquisitions in terms of their potential impact on the Buckeyes during the 2023 season. There was plenty of other football news to break down as well, as Ohio State now has official kickoff times and networks for two big East Division showdowns in November – including The Game itself – in addition to several future schedule adjustments in both the 2024 and 2029 seasons. On the basketball front, we talk about Brice Sensabaugh's potential to improve his draft stock at the NBA Combine this week in Chicago, and how Seth Towns surprised us all with his decision to enter the transfer portal two seasons after he last played for the Buckeyes. Finally, Chase takes us through the most significant developments Around the Oval in the world of Ohio State's Olympic sports, but not before we share our exuberance for Avery Henry following the news that his cancer has gone into remission. The full rundown for this week's episode: 0:28: Griffin is back from New Orleans, but with Dan now on vacation, we welcome in Chase Brown for his debut appearance as a co-host on RPW 2:52: The Big Ten's new TV deal will see OSU take on Michigan State on NBC this season, but a night game in mid-November might be a chilly one 5:28: No change for The Game as Ohio State and Michigan will still play at noon on FOX in 2023 9:20: Another Ohio State-Georgia quarterback storyline emerges as Dylan Raiola commits to the Bulldogs 12:58: The commitment of Ole Miss transfer Tywone Malone brings depth to Ohio State's defensive tackle position 19:42: With almost three times as many transfer additions this offseason as the Buckeyes have ever had under Ryan Day, it appears the program's portal philosophy has shifted 25:35: Griffin thinks Davison Igbinosun could be the most impactful transfer for Ohio State in 2023 32:09: Should Josh Simmons win a starting tackle job, he may end up the most important piece Ohio State added to its roster from the portal 35:30: Ja'Had Carter is still well-positioned for a spot on the two-deep at nickel safety despite seeing his spring cut short with an injury 38:45: Long snapper transfer John Ferlmann may be more impactful than some might think after the special teams snafus late last season 42:00: Victor Cutler could wind up a non-factor, but there are still questions to be answered at the center position this season 43:38: Malone will likely be more impactful at DT beyond 2023, but could still receive reasonable playing time given Larry Johnson's penchant for rotating linemen 45:10: If all goes well for OSU, Tristan Gebbia won't see the field in 2023 (aside from blowouts), but we've seen a third-string QB have to step up for the Buckeyes before 51:15: Lorenzo Styles figures to be a prospect for the future at cornerback after transferring in from Notre Dame and converting from wide receiver 54:42: Huge shoutout to Avery Henry, whose cancer is in remission after receiving an osteosarcoma diagnosis in December 56:36: Seth Towns surprises everybody by entering the transfer portal 101:14: Chase runs down the latest happenings in Ohio State's Olympic sports

After years of finding positions of need and plugging in major difference-makers, the Buckeyes have now moved to adding depth pieces and potential playmakers at every position they could have used help at. That includes offensive line (former San Diego State offensive tackle Josh Simmons and former Louisiana-Monroe center Victor Cutler), the secondary (former Syracuse safety Ja'Had Carter, former Ole Miss cornerback Davison Igbinosun and former Notre Dame athlete Lorenzo Styles Jr.) and other positions that could have used a boost. Former Ole Miss defensive tackle Tywone Malone is just the latest example of that; he chose to commit to Ohio State over other top suitors on Tuesday afternoon. #ohiostatefootball #OhioState #CFBNews Subscribe for more Ohio State Football coverage: https://www.youtube.com/c/Lettermenrow?sub_confirmation=1 Ohio State Buckeyes videos from Columbus, Ohio from the staff of Lettermen Row. James Laurinaitis Returns, Ohio State Basketball Has A Bad January and the Buckeyes Land Another Big Transfer

Real Pod Wednesdays

Ohio State football got two pieces of exciting news over the past week, but Ohio State's basketball struggles went from bad to worse. We talk extensively about both sports on this week's episode of Real Pod Wednesdays, starting with Ohio State football. While it's a quiet National Signing Day for the Buckeyes in that they are not making any additions to their high school recruiting class of 2023, they made news on Friday when they announced the return of former Buckeye linebacker James Laurinaitis to the program as a defensive graduate assistant. We discuss the impact Laurinaitis could make for the Buckeyes both on the field and on the recruiting trail, then pivot the conversation to discussing the state of Ohio State basketball after a 2-7 month of January. Is this season still salvageable, and will Chris Holtmann be coaching for his job in February and March? We discuss what's gone wrong for those Buckeyes, what needs to happen if they're going to earn their way back into the NCAA Tournament and why we'd still be surprised if Ohio State made a coaching change this year. After learning in the midst of recording this week's episode that Davison Igbinosun had committed to Ohio State, we boomerang back to football to talk about the value of adding the former Ole Miss cornerback. Finally, we spend a few minutes discussing our ranking of Ohio State's top 10 quarterbacks of the 21st century. The full rundown for today's show: 0:14: Today is National Signing Day, but it doesn't feel like it for Ohio State 1:04: Ohio State's 2023 recruiting class is a good class, but a little short on top-end star power 7:26: Hiring James Laurinaitis is a no-brainer that could pay dividends on the field and in recruiting 11:53: It's way too early to call James Laurinaitis the next Brian Hartline, but you can see the upside 14:55: We wouldn't have guessed a month ago that we'd be talking about Ohio State missing the NCAA Tournament, but that's where we are 16:50: Ohio State went from losing close games to losing games soundly, which makes this more than just a slump 20:06: The Buckeyes' laundry list of issues in January included rebounding, ball movement, shooting and defense 23:15: Bruce Thornton, Zed Key and Justice Sueing among Buckeyes whose performance has declined 32:02: Does Ohio State have a talent problem or a coaching problem? Can't pin it on just one 34:43: Is Chris Holtmann coaching for his job right now? We still think he's likely to be back next season 45:24: Ohio State has two winnable games this week against Wisconsin and Michigan, but 1-1 seems more likely than 2-0 48:04: OSU women's basketball had a bad week too, but should soon get the boost it needs from Jacy Sheldon's return 49:54: Landing Davison Igbinosun and Ja'Had Carter is a big boost for Ohio State's secondary 54:31: Ohio State shows it can adapt by being more aggressive in the transfer portal 56:46: How our individual ballots compared to our full-staff ranking of OSU's top 21st-century quarterbacks

Ohio State landed cornerback Davison Igbinosun from Ole Miss in the transfer portal on Tuesday. Not only does he fill a big need for the Buckeyes, but Igbinosun was the highest-rated player regardless of position remaining in the transfer portal. The Buckeyes have done a good job overall this season in the portal, as they also landed the top safety on the market in Ja'Had Carter from Syracuse, brought in a solid offensive lineman in Victor Cutler from Louisiana-Monroe, and solidified their depth at quarterback with Oregon State transfer Tristan Gebbia. Now that Igbinosun is in the fold, what does the depth chart look like for Ohio State at cornerback in 2023? Also, it's a huge day on the OSU beat as we will interview head coach Ryan Day and all of the assistant coaches this morning and into the early afternoon. How Ohio State's 2023 Roster is Stacking Up

The 2023 college football offseason is officially underway, and the outlook for Ohio State's roster next season is starting to become more clear. The 2022 college football season officially ended Monday night with Georgia's 65-7 shellacking of TCU in the national championship game, and we start this week's episode of Real Pod Wednesdays by sharing our reactions to Monday night's blowout. We can't help but think Ohio State would be celebrating a national title right now if a couple more plays had gone its way in the Peach Bowl, and the Bulldogs' performance against the Horned Frogs certainly makes the Buckeyes' performance against Georgia look more impressive – though we (or at least Dan) don't disagree with Ohio State being fourth in the final rankings. With the 2022 season now over, though, it's time to start looking ahead to 2023, and that's what we spend most of this week's show doing. First, we discuss the Buckeyes' transfer addition of former Syracuse safety Ja'Had Carter and explain why Ohio State's track record of limiting transfer attrition remains impressive. We also discuss the impact of Cade Stover, Miyan Williams and Xavier Johnson all opting to return to Ohio State for another season and the NFL draft decisions the Buckeyes are still waiting on. (Note: This episode of Real Pod Wednesdays was recorded before Luke Wypler and Matt Jones announced their NFL draft decisions.)Then, we do a rundown of how Ohio State's 2023 roster currently stacks up at every position, taking a look at where the Buckeyes are loaded with depth and where they enter the offseason with significant question marks. Finally, we talk about the week that was for Ohio State basketball, why Ohio State's lack of big men isn't entirely a bad thing and how Brice Sensabaugh is looking more and more likely by the week to be a first-round NBA draft pick next year. The full rundown of topics discussed this week: 0:30: Picking TCU to cover was not our best prediction 1:42: It sure looks like Ohio State would have been the national champion if it beat Georgia 4:20: Ohio State's defensive performance doesn't look quite as awful after Georgia carved up TCU 8:17: Most 11W readers think Ohio State should be ranked second, but Dan agrees with the poll voters 10:12: Ohio State is behind Michigan and Penn State in some early 2023 rankings 13:26: Why Ja'Had Carter is a valuable addition for Ohio State's secondary 15:50: It's a win for Ohio State if it loses only five transfers during the first transfer window, and none of the outgoing transfers are shocking 20:25: Offensive tackle remains Ohio State's biggest transfer need by far, but the Buckeyes might be out of options in this transfer window 22:00: Cade Stover and Miyan Williams are back, and don't sleep on the impact of Xavier Johnson's return 27:55: Kyle McCord vs. Devin Brown looks like a real competition, and Lincoln Kienholz has promise for the future 32:06: Ohio State has a lot of depth to manage at running back and wide receiver, but that's a good problem to have 36:53: Stover's return makes Ohio State's tight end depth chart look a lot stronger 38:10: Ohio State has lots of bodies but few proven commodities on the offensive line 41:42: Defensive line features strong top-end talent but some depth questions 44:54: Buckeyes could return both starting linebackers, but could get a coverage boost from C.J. Hicks (or Sonny Styles) 47:26: Ohio State needs young cornerbacks to step up, but its talent at the position is promising 50:10: Plenty of candidates to fill vacated starting spots at safety 53:40: Zed Key's absence exposes Ohio State's lack of big man depth, but smaller roster could be more suited to win in March 57:42: Brice Sensabaugh is looking more and more like a one-and-done candidate with his consistent scoring 1:00:36: Ohio State women's basketball is off to its best start ever and showing lots of resiliency
