Fly Fishing the Mono Rig -- Versatility and the Tight Line Advantage Taken Further

Troutbitten

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 19, 2021 80:02

After hundreds of Troutbitten articles featuring the versatility of the Mono Rig, now there's a podcast. My friends Josh, Austin, Trevor and Bill join me to discuss how each of us fishes this hybrid rig as a complete fly fishing system, detailing the ultimate flexibility of this amazing tool. The Troutbitten Mono Rig is a hybrid system for fishing all types of flies: nymphs (both tight line and indicator styles), streamers, dry-dropper, wets, and small dry flies. With twenty pound monofilament as a fly line substitute, better contact, control and strike detection are gained with the Mono Rig versus a traditional fly line approach. And yet, the casting here is still a fly line style cast. Ironically, it takes excellent fly casting skills to efficiently throw a Mono Rig.The Mono Rig is similar to tight line and Euro Nymphing styles, however . . . it's a full system for fishing all fly types, with and without indicators — with and without split shot. The Mono Rig is a very versatile tool. And that's the focus of this podcast. We all fish similar mono rigs with some variation. And we all use it in different ways, too. Some are slight. Some are major. This discussion provides a full picture of what the Mono Rig really is and what you can do with it — all the options — and all the versatility. We Discuss the Following:Mono Rig Butt Sections and DiametersTight Line NymphingEuro NymphingTight Line to the IndicatorTight Line Dry DropperStreamers on the Mono RigDry Flies on a Mono RigFly Rod Selection for the Mono RigResourcesREAD: Troutbitten | Category | The Mono RigREAD: Troutbitten | Design and Function of the Troutbitten Standard Mono RigREAD: Troutbitten | The Mono Rig and Why Fly Line SucksREAD: Troutbitten | The Full Mono Rig System -- All the variations, formulas and adjustmentsREAD: Troutbitten | Euro Nymphing and the Mono RigREAD: Troutbitten | Beyond Euro NymphingVisit:Troutbitten WebsiteTroutbitten InstagramTroutbitten YouTubeTroutbitten Facebook

The Frontcourt (Fours and Fives) starts at 1:00 Hunter Dickinson was pretty good, awesome in fact, and then just plain awesome as they doubled him and took away his favorite shoulder. He can develop that and/or a three. Moussa Diabate is going to be an IMPACT defender, can play the four, might develop a shot, switchable nightmare. Versatility with Brandon Johns able to play 4 or 5. He was more commanding as a starter, team X factor. Terrance Williams is about to bust out. Will Tschetter: redshirt or instant Wisconsin center? [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. The Backcourt: Wings and Guards starts at 32:24 Caleb Houstan is like bringing in an NBA three-and-D dude. Not going to feel like a freshman, can shoot over anyone 6'5” and lower so he could be the new Chaundee shoots it guy. Backups: all the fours and twos. Eli Brooks is the most important player on the team (no hot take). Kobe Bufkin is going to outplay his rankings—this year he's something in between freshman and sophomore Caris. Could see a jump from Zeb Jackson, or he could fall behind Isaiah Barnes. Not Jace's turn yet. Could be Frankie's turn soon but Devante Jones is your starting PG and could be an upgrade on Smith. 3. Big Ten Basketball Preview starts at 1:06:53 Tier 1: Illinois gets back Kofi and Curbelo, Trent Frazier is a problem for Brooks, who else can play on this team? Purdue brings back everybody, can a sophomore breakout from Ivey and Edey and Newman and Gillis take them all the way? Ohio State replaced its backcourt, waiting to see if Seth Towns can take a big role. Maryland found a center and a PG to go with Ayala and Scott. Tier 2: Indiana is 2015 Michigan football. They'll put four out so TJD can work alone inside, and brought in four transfers/recruits to do it. MSU has a few dudes but can't figure out which and when to play. Iowa and Wisconsin suffered huge losses. Nebraska > Penn State and Northwestern. Are 200 teams better than Minnesota? 4. Hot Takes, and Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac starts at 1:46:57 Signs of life from future opponents who looked like pushovers, signs of death from objects in the rearview mirror. Indiana has to be a frustrating follow, but not enough that we can wish Jamie luck on fixing that OL. Drought is affecting available feed on permitted grazing allotments, as well as the price of hay on the market.   In fact, Lichleiter, who runs permits on Sanborn Park has thinned his herd to 328 after selling 100.    They fetched about $1,800 a head, despite being better cattle than what he sold six years ago for $3,000 each.   And on top of that hay in the valley is as high as some have ever seen it.   Those who spoke with the Montrose Daily Press reported good crops so far, but also pressures from rising fuel costs and other behind-the-scenes expenses that affect what they charge.   On top of these expenses some growers won't be getting a second cutting because their water rights are insufficient for the available water supply.    A lot of people are struggling.   Lichleiter said he's taken a 40% cut to his grazing already and the U.S. Forest Service wants to cut further.    He found a little extra land to lease as pasture and has purchased some extra hay. He's also holding onto heifers and the best of his stock as he considers his options. A good snowpack that's at least 100% of normal this winter is critical to going forward.   To learn more about the process visit our full story at montrosepress.com   Also - The Ridgway Marshal's Office is seeking information as to the possible whereabouts of Paul Mcelera of Ridgway.   He was last seen leaving his residence on July 5, on his vintage motorcycle.   He was wearing a black helmet, and a black leather jacket.   Anyone with information is asked to call 970-249-9110 or 970-626-5196. Ep. 51: Pittsburgh Basketball and 10 years in the NBA shaped this entrepreneur. Charles Smith played with the Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks, and San Antonio Spurs. During that window, he was often asked to assume new roles, sometimes mid-season. The one skill he worked on constantly was shot blocking, and still today he ranks in the NBA's top one percent of all-time shot blockers. After retiring, he participated in the Executive Entrepreneurs program at Stanford University and has recently partnered with Fierce Inc., a global leadership development and training company whose client roster includes Apple, Coca Cola, and HBO. One of Fierce's critical areas of focus involves helping teams communicate better. “There's an old saying in sport,” Charles said, “The game tape or practice tape doesn't lie. If you fall down, it's there for all to see. Businesses don't have tape like sports teams do, but they do have measurables.” And if the tape doesn't get you, observed the 10-year NBA player, a good teammate will. Listeners to this podcast will enjoy Charles' no-nonsense insights forged in the heat of world-class competition. Versatility will be the key for any reserve players, cab you play more than one spot? Can you play special teams? Can they keep "just a fullback?" They will go heavy on the defensive line, keeping players fresh and developing younger players. Linebackers and safties kind of morph into one, and the Cornerback group could be a dogfight all summer. #Browns #BakerMayfield #NickChubb #OdellBeckham #MylesGarrett #JOK JohnJohnsonIII Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. In this episode we chat with Country singer songwriter Brook Chivell and hear about his obsessive musical upbringing in Melbourne and desire to be jet setting all over the world. he wrote his first song at age 6 and started playing guitar at 17 just as he was supposed to be studying for his end of school exams. Heading down the rock path and playing in cover bands all over Melbourne he had to get fired from his band to make him realise it was time to start recording and releasing his own music as an independent artist. Brook has made a name for himself as producing modern country that sits just as well in the Australian Country scene as it would in the American market. Versatility is the key for this talented musician, with just as much passion belting out a party country rock anthem as well as a soulful country ballad. Brook is a songwriter at heart and loves the search for melody, the hook and the soul of the song. "It's all about the connection" he says was the best advice given to him when performing with his mate Brandy - AKA Adam Brand. After reaching the finals of the 2017 Toyota StarMaker Competition at Tamworth Country Music Festival, Brook has gone on to perform at iconic festivals such as Deni Ute Muster, Gympie Music Muster, Sydney Country Music Festival, Broadbeach/Groundwater Country Music Festival as well as Tamworth Country Music Festival. Brook is also considered one of Australia's finest touring artists. Connect with Brook: Facebook instagram Twitter Spotify

My guest this week is Kristi Soomer, founder and CEO of Encircled, a line of innovative, sustainable and versatile women’s wear based in Toronto. She wanted to help women do more with less in their wardrobes. She launched her online store in 2012 and now has a studio in Toronto. 5:58 – Kristi 101 The brand started as a travel clothing line. Kristi came from a corporate career and never went to fashion school, but she wanted to make comfortable, stylish clothes. 7:41 – The beginning She was packing for a yoga retreat in Costa Rica and didn’t know what to pack. She liked the concept of a piece of clothing that could be versatile and used many different ways. She used a versatile scarf she had and improved it until she created her own prototype. 12:16 – Creating a brand She started with a product instead of a brand and developed a brand that wrapped around her product. She named her company Encircled because it made her think of her circle scarf. 14:51 – Ethical fashion Kristi was ahead of the curve when it came to sustainable fashion, but some people didn’t understand why it mattered. She says authenticity and integrity are really important to her, so she became curious about sustainable fashion and human rights in the fashion supply chain. 19:18 – Progress over perfection Kristi says it’s impossible to shop perfectly, but you can find better brands, better fabrics and better options. Try to take incremental, small steps. People expect her to be perfect and they criticize what she drives, but there’s a lot of grey area in sustainability. She believes in progress over perfection. 29:23 – Turning point in her business It was a hard decision to quit her career, and her family didn’t support her desire to be an entrepreneur. She started seeing growth in the business in 2015. She began hiring people to help her, and she plans to have 20 employees this year.  35:50 – On the horizon She started a podcast, is doing interviews and started an email marketing course and goal setting course. She wants to help female entrepreneurs level up. She wants to keep creating comfy, dressy clothes and expand product development and find new fabrics. 39:35 – Get to know you Favorite meal? Hamburgers Song she has to sing? Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” FEATURED QUOTES “Authenticity and integrity are really important to me.” – Kristi “I became very curious and very interested in human rights in the fashion supply chain.” – Kristi “There are very few women who ever surpass the million-dollar mark in revenue. We passed that in 2015 and continue to grow, and I want more women to be able to do that.” – Kristi CONNECT WITH KRISTI:  https://www.kristisoomer.com/ https://www.encircled.ca/ ABOUT KRISTI: Kristi is the founder and CEO of Encircled. A line of innovative, sustainable and versatile womenswear based in Toronto and retailed exclusively online. A former management consultant who virtually lived in airports, Kristi started Encircled with the dream of helping women do more with less in their wardrobes. Frustrated with the lack of versatile and stylish travel clothing, she started designing it. With no fashion background and little capital, she launched her online store in 2012. Today, Encircled has a beautiful studio in the Junction Triangle area of Toronto, a team of 12, and makes all of its clothing within 35km of their studio. Encircled has been featured in publications like FASHION magazine, NOW Magazine, The Globe and Mail, and Apartment Therapy. Encircled is also a certified B Corporation, and winner of the StartUp 50 Fastest Growing companies in Canada in 2018.
