Norma Sklarek had many “firsts”.  She was often credited at the start of her career as the first Black Women architect to be licensed in the United States.  That distinction actually goes to Beverly Greene – Norma was the 3rd.   But it didn't matter.   Young black girls read her name in the likes of Ebony Magazine – a staple publication in every black household at the time –  when she was included in their 1958 article on “Successful Young Architects”.  As more and more discovered her career, she became their role model. Like so many women, then and now, she chose a management path.  Achievement was measurable, ambition was acceptable, and competence over pizazz was a vital and necessary counterpoint to charismatic male designers in firms with large scale complex projects.  As a woman and as an African American, the design path was simply not open to her, and she needed to work, she had two boys to support, and without any shame, she needed to get paid. So her work often fell shadow to the lead designer.  She was the project manager, the woman behind the scenes who made sure things got done… And yet, despite the groundbreaking achievements of Norma, what is the current state of black women in the field of architecture?  In the 2020 AIA Demographic survey, the association counted 94,000 members.  23,500 of these are women.  There are 691 Black Women architects.  As each Black woman achieves her license, it is a matter of pride to add consecutively to that very small number. It's a matter of shame that it is still so small. On today's episode, Norma Sklarek: An Extreme Bold Hand. Special thanks to Kate Diamond, Renee Kemp-Rotan, Roberta Washington, Gail Kennard, Michael Enomoto and Gruen Associates, Pat Morton, Jack Travis, Beth Gibb, Alexandra Lange, and Suzanne Mecs.  The archival recording of Norma Sklarek is from the African American Architects of Los Angeles collection at the UCLA Library Center for Oral History Research. This podcast is produced by Brandi Howell, with editorial advising from Alexandra Lange.   New Angle Voice is brought to you by the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation, with support from Knoll, a MillerKnoll company and SOM.

Are Vaccines good for Us, or do they Cause More Problems than they Prevent? A controversial subject, “Are vaccines good for us, or do they cause more problems than they prevent? And, what about the mRNA vaccines for Covid 19, (which many people so they are not really vaccines, but an experiment in genetic manipulation)? This program asks the question, “Are we allowing ourselves to Think clearly about severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 or as we have come to refer to it, Covid 19.” When the medical profession first encountered Covid 19, we didn't know what to do when people arrive in the hospital in distress. We were afraid to use hydrocortisone, when, many months and many deaths later, hydrocortisone turned out to be extremely useful. We immediately intubated our patients and put them on respirators and looking back it looks as though that was actually a death sentence for many of them.  It seemed that we did not have any reliable treatments available so we did the best we could and prayed for the arrival of the vaccine. In record time a vaccine appeared, and Most people stood thankfully online to receive their injections.  But then it turned out that many people were unwilling to be vaccinated. The government continues to insist that the shots are completely harmless and that is those who are resisting are simply irrational. Arguments and fights broke out with are the vaccinated trying to force those who are resistant to take their shots so that we could hurry up and get to “herd immunity.”  I have been trained to trust those that make the medications and have admired Dr. Fauci for years. But through the months of our recent pandemic, I have begun to have some doubts --- so for our conversation today I have invited my long-term colleague and friend, Jack Travis, who has been studying the vaccine question in detail and who has created and it enormously valuable website, VaccineFacts.info that I guarantee will raise your eyebrows and bring you useful well-researched information Find Dr. Miller here: www.drmiller.com

Dr. Jack Travis stated in his remarks at the National Wellness Conference in that "connection is the currency of wellness."  In this podcast with Jim Strohecker, CEO of Well People, we will discuss how the human connection and experience will lead us towards greater diversity, equity and inclusion processes.  These are some of the show highlights and key takeaways: Jim Co-created the Wellness Inventory program am, a 12 dimension tool that focuses on dimensions of wellbeing.  Four of the twelve dimensions highlighted were self-responsibility & love, breathing, sensing and eating. In his work with faith-based groups Jim used the Wellness Inventory to stimulate greater cohesion.  Participants began to find ways to support each other using mindful eating and prayer walking.  They began to combine modalities for health.   Given that faith communities have high trust and common spiritual purpose, having good physical, mental and emotional health is a natural next step. Jim shares how he created a program for the Tennessee Department of Health to train wellness ambassadors from various faith communities from minority and underserved populations and the overwhelming response that he got from this program.  Jim also addressed how to get wellness programs to groups especially when underfunded.  He has done a lot of work in academic settings using a strategy that we discussed in the podcast.   We discussed how connection to others with empathy is a part of universal wellness and can improve diversity and inclusion efforts.  In a political climate where walls are being put up and that separation is a good thing, what can we do to increase a sense of cohesion and inclusion?   Jim reminds us that we are all a part of the human condition and when we don't know what else to do we can just breathe. Wellness professionals need to be at the heart of these conversations because it's a whole person approach.  For our healthcare and helping professionals, Jim shared that occupational burnout is now a classification of disease according to the WHO and will help us to get more attention focused on wellness and self-compassion.  If you enjoyed this podcast, excellent!  You can reach me for more information at nikki@diversityandinclusioncoach.com and my website at www.diversityandinclusioncoach.com.   You can reach Jim Strohecker at jim@wellpeople.com or call @310.823.9553.  You can find the Wellness Inventory Training Program at www.wellpeople.com.
