Hello Friends of the Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! We are taking a short break between seasons during February and March. In the meantime please enjoy these REBROADCAST episodes, some favorites of ours, to tide you over until we return on Wednesday April 9th with new episodes!Get ready to saddle up for some wildly excellent 80s action with The Most Excellent 80s Movies podcast's tubular recap of Lethal Weapon! Our radical hosts Krissy, Nathan, and special guest Andy Andy Nelson gnaw their way through this primo slice of buddy-cop nostalgia. It's 1987 and extreme odd couple, detectives Riggs and Murtaugh, are trading quips and bullets on the streets of LA. The hosts serve up a bodacious summary of this classic flick starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as the mismatched cop duo. Majorly Important Points:They dish on how this flick totally created the formula for buddy cop flicks with its wacky partners. We dig it!Some stuff like Riggs' grief and the villains are now kinda bogus and don't hold up. Bummer! The action scenes are styling and they can roll with the occasional plot holes. Sweet! They analyze whether the wild Western-style ending fights really move the story. Hmmm.Other Triumphant Topics:This movie screams the 1980s with its cliches, tropes, and references. Classic! The action is almost as extreme as director Michael Bay's future flicks. Ka-boom!Some bits about women and doctors are now super cringe. Not cool!Is this really a holiday classic or just set at Christmas? We're not sure, dudes. They rate this radical movie between 6 and 8 "buns" out of 10.In conclusion, this most excellent 80s flick is a pioneer of buddy cop films despite some heinous elements that don't age well. --We couldn't do this without your support of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! Send us a textOn the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are learning to live again while taking down some dirty, rotten criminals. We watched the 1987 film by Richard Donner, Lethal Weapon. If 50-something is, as Murtaugh claims, “too old for this shit,” then what do we have to look forward to? And what does it say about us when we're already feeling too old for a lot of shit?I'll say one thing: at least none of us have just been partnered up with a loose cannon with a death wish. I'm sure that's not what Murtaugh wished for when he blew out his birthday candles. But you know what none of us will ever too old for? Watching a fantastic ‘80s classic. Send us a textDid you know Lethal Weapon takes place in L.A. during Christmas? Neither did we. But now that we do, we couldn't be more excited. In this episode of The Rewatch Party, Nick, Anthony, and Elise tackle the rewatchability of the 1998 action-comedy Lethal Weapon 4, the final installment in the legendary buddy-cop franchise. Early in the discussion, Nick drops a fun fact that surprises Elise—Mel Gibson, who plays the iconic Martin Riggs, is actually Australian. Elise, having never known that before, adds a fresh layer of amusement to the conversation, sparking an interesting side discussion about Gibson's career and how his international background contributed to his rise as an action star in Hollywood. The trio dives into how Lethal Weapon 4 continues the series' signature blend of high-octane action and comedy while giving Riggs and Danny Glover's character, Roger Murtaugh, even more depth as they confront aging and family responsibilities. Nick, Anthony, and Elise discuss how the chemistry between Gibson and Glover is as strong as ever, making the characters' friendship the emotional core of the film. They also highlight the standout performance of Jet Li as the villain, whose martial arts skills add a thrilling new dimension to the franchise. As the conversation progresses, the hosts examine how the film mixes lighter comedic moments with more serious themes of family, loyalty, and legacy. Elise appreciates how the movie balances explosive action with heartfelt moments, like Riggs preparing to become a father and Murtaugh facing retirement. Anthony points out that these personal stakes give Lethal Weapon 4 an added layer of rewatchability, as the characters' growth feels earned after four films. The hosts also enjoy the return of Joe Pesci's Leo Getz and Chris Rock's introduction as Detective Butters, whose comic relief keeps the movie fun. By the end of the episode, Nick, Anthony, and Elise agree that Lethal Weapon 4 is a highly rewatchable film that brings a satisfying close to the series. They praise its blend of action, humor, and heart, with Nick noting that it's the perfect conclusion for fans of the franchise. Elise's newfound knowledge of Mel Gibson's Australian roots adds a playful twist to the conversation, making this episode of The Rewatch Party a must-listen for fans of the series and newcomers alike. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0122151/

As the discussion unfolds, the hosts explore the evolving dynamics between Riggs and Murtaugh, highlighting how "Lethal Weapon 3" balances their trademark humor with more mature themes, such as Murtaugh's approaching retirement and the duo's increasing camaraderie. The addition of Rene Russo as Lorna Cole is a focal point of the conversation, as the hosts delve into how her character brings a fresh and exciting element to the film, particularly with her strong chemistry with Riggs. The hosts also analyze the film's action sequences, from explosive set pieces to the high-stakes shootouts that have become synonymous with the franchise. Send us a Text Message. On this episode Tom and Bert cover Movies - "Alien" and Lethal Weapon" with little known facts about the Production, Filming and behind the scenes drama."in Space no one can hear you Scream"! This was the famous tagline for "Alien" a 1979 SciFi/Horror/Thriller that brought back memories of the SciFi Classics of the 1950's with their taut, pulsating, suspenseful Storylines. Starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skeritt and John Hurt, "Alien" was a rousing success and moviegoers were horrified by the infamous and iconic "Chest Burster" scene (13:31) with John Hurt having a tad bit of indigestion to say the least. "Lethal Weapon" (37:16) a 1987 Film is our 2nd movie to review and discuss. I don't know about y'all, but I could talk about movie cops in a dozen different ways - and I think even Annie would say the same. You often get cops in buddy movies - like Riggs and Murtaugh, Tango and Cash, etc. And then you have the franchise people - for which we do have something to say in this episode. And we haven't even talked about TV cops yet at all. I am trying my darndest not to break Annie's rule after our first episode on teachers. Hope you enjoy this episode. We still have a ton of professions to get through! For example: Con Artists Retail Workers Soldiers Priests Um....Prostitutes Do you have one you'd like us to take on? The Movie Wars crew was exhilarated to tackle two buddy cop classics in 1989's Lethal Weapon 2 and 1995's Bad Boys. Similar to Westerns, the Buddy Cop genre has been transformed and retooled, all while paying homage to a timeless formula. The chemistry between the lead actors drives both of these films. LW2 reveals that Riggs and Murtaugh are more like family than when they were introduced in the franchise's first entry, where they were beleaguered and struggled to reconcile their opposing policing methods. Bad Boys hinges more on Mike and Marcus' friction and bickering, leading to the ultimate payoff when their highly effective partnership is put on full display. Both films are anchored by comedic third wheels played by a pair of legendary Joes(Pesci and Pantoliano). How will the war score fair for these two genre titans? Give it a listen because you're never too old for this Movie Wars sh*t.
