Following his Sept. 29 investiture, Michigan State University President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D., announced one of his first initiatives was to bring “MSU to Michigan,” and he did so by leading MSU's inaugural Spartan Bus Tour. We set out from campus Monday morning October 21 from Kellogg Center. (0:20) - President Guskiewicz opens the tour. (1:14) - Our first stop was in Mount Pleasant to visit the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture and Lifeways. Eric Rodriguez is interim public relations director for the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. (4:20) - The next stop on the tour was in Le Roy to visit M&R Pickling, an Amish-owned canning company founded in 2013. The company is a client of the MSU Product Center, which supports innovation and growth for those in food, agriculture and natural resource sectors. Then it was on to a stop at the Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center, the largest National Guard training facility in the United States and the main training facility for the Michigan National Guard. At the stop, we met Michigan native Colonel Lucas J. Lanczy, the current commander of JMTC and got a brief welcome and history of the site to learn about the center's economic and environmental impact in the region. (6:15) - We remained in Grayling for our next stop at a somewhat hidden MSU jewel, Camp Wa Wa Sum. Brandon Baswell is service manager with IPF Real Estate. (8:13) - As we headed to Traverse City to spend the night, President G, as we affectionately called our leader on the tour, reflected on Day 1. (11:40) - Day 2 of the tour began in Traverse City at the Northwest Michigan Horticulture Research Center. The 137-acre Center was founded in 1979 by the area's fruit growers who wanted a research center of their own — a place that could help with unique issues that come with growing fruit in a region unlike any other — so they turned to MSU. Nikki Rothwell is an MSU extension specialist and coordinator of the center. (16:02) - After a group walk up part of the Sleepng Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Glen Arbor, we enjoyed lunch at Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club, a nationally renowned golf destination located on the shores of Lake Michigan, offering two championship golf courses. Founded in 1999, the golf club is built on the bluffs above the shore of Lake Michigan. Arcadia Bluffs is routinely rated a top 50 course in the country. We heard a presentation from club representatives and alumni who graduated from MSU's top turfgrass management program. Then it was on to Ludington State Park, a public recreation area located two miles north of Ludington, occupying 5,300 acres between the shores of Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake. Ethan Theuerkauf, an MSU assistant professor and coastal geomorphologist described his research that focuses on how and why coastal landscapes, such as beaches, barrier islands and wetlands change over time. As we boarded the bus in Ludington on our way to the Martinez Farm in Conklin, we learned more about MSU Migrant Student Services. Day 2 of the tour ended with an evening reception at the Muskegon Museum of Art. Teresa Dunn, a Mexican American artist and MSU professor who has artwork on view in the museum joined the group and talked about her art. (19:25) - Day 3 of the tour began with a stop at Muskegon High School to learn about current and future pre-college programs in teaching and osteopathic medicine. (23:24) - Next was a stop in Rockford to view PFAS remediation sites. MSU's Center for PFAS Research, formed in 2020, is an interdisciplinary center that leads agricultural and natural resource PFAS research in Michigan and works with communities to create remediation strategies. (26:08) - Next, the Spartan Bus Tour headed to MSU's Grand Rapids Innovation Park that anchors the “Medical Mile” in Grand Rapids. It includes the MSU Grand Rapids Research Center, Doug Meijer Medical Innovation Building and Perrigo's North American corporate headquarters. MSU's College of Human Medicine has roots here as well, located in the nearby Secchia Center. Then it was off to visit Herman Miller, a subsidiary of MillerKnoll that produces office furniture, equipment and home furnishings. (28:07) - As our extraordinary driver, Tina Martin from Dean Trailways, began taking us to Hickory Corners and a visit to the Kellogg Biological Station, KBS interim director Jeff Conner hopped on the bus to prepare us for our visit to this MSU jewel. The W.K. Kellogg Biological Station, or KBS, is MSU's largest off-campus education complex and one of North America's premier inland field stations. ...

You have to understand the patterns of behavior, even though the tool sets evolve.” “Recognizing that our work experiences are increasingly becoming digitized and virtual, the work is becoming digital, but that we're physical beings and physical spaces. We need to figure out how to allow people to exist in these physical spaces and use those tech tools in a really healthy, fun, productive way.” “Facility managers and corporate real estate leaders are product owners that own the product—the workplace. The focus is on helping them better understand their teams, the diverse nature of those teams, the evolving nature of the work, and trying to conceptualize a space that gets better over time.” “Regardless of your inherent perspectives on management, the thought of using a space to supervise work in an era of digitized distributed work is extremely unrealistic.” “What can this space do to help our employees to collaborate in new ways, offer them experiences they can't have at home. That is a healthy and better approach. It's just complicated. It's more complicated than saying, well line 'em up in rows so that I can watch them effectively.” “It's urban planning. We're taking these principles, we're bringing them inside the building. We're enabling an ecosystem of people.” “Any facilities project is a change management project, and any real estate strategy has to follow talent.”

Article based on the latest MillerKnoll Earnings Call held on 2024-03-27: MillerKnoll's recent earnings call highlighted noteworthy points for investors. CEO, Andi Owen remarked, "We are as we said in the prepared comments we're on the cusp of seeing order demand pick up. We saw some positive trends as we move through the quarter. Americas orders in the last couple of weeks have increased over last year same weeks prior year. So the trends are pointing in the right direction. I think the macro indicators as we've covered are pointing in the right direction." These comments reflect a cautious optimism in the wake of demanding market conditions that have curbed order volumes and sales in the recent quarter. Despite the dip in net sales compared to the previous year, MillerKnoll met their adjusted earnings per share guidance and improved the consolidated gross margin. The company has activated several programs to fuel demand and optimize operations. These range from enhancing showroom strategies and rolling out new concept studios, to integrating augmented reality capabilities and diversifying product assortments. On the subject of evolving business practices, Owen described their approach to showroom consolidation: "It's not really driven by cost. Cost is a great side benefit, but really driven by the customer and what they're telling us." The emphasis on customer-centered adaptation underscores MillerKnoll's commitment to providing an enriched customer experience. Notably, the earnings call drew attention to challenges such as demand pressures and delays in capital expenditure decisions. Despite these temporary setbacks, MillerKnoll has identified signs of emerging demand, particularly in the luxury housing market, as indicated by an uptake in customer inquiries and project mock-up requests. In terms of future direction, the company aims to focus on cost management and adapt its restructuring measures to the constantly changing economic conditions. Planned strategies include consolidation of showrooms, reduction in workforce, and expansion in international territory. On a tactical level, the intent is to optimize retail stores, enhance digital capabilities, and diversify product offerings to consolidate brand loyalty and tap into dormant housing sector demand. In conclusion, MillerKnoll's strategic actions, alignment with consumer trends, and demonstrated resilience in recent quarters suggest that the company is positioning itself to navigate expected market fluctuations. It's worth noting that these observations are derived from MillerKnoll's own representations and insights during the earnings call and should be viewed in that context. The company's trajectory illustrates a measured and strategic response to current challenges and indicates a realistic approach towards future growth and opportunities. Once captivated by design's allure, how do those shaping our built environment tap into the compounding power of sharing knowledge, honing their skills, and seamlessly blending beauty with efficiency? Andrew Kao is a licensed architect, a former Product Manager at WeWork, and a former Vice President at both CBRE/Hana and MillerKnoll. Evan walks us through how MillerKnoll is handling this new challenge and how they are adopting some inspiration from the sporting goods space to support their efforts. This episode is best enjoyed in a very nice chair.

Today's episode includes a visual demonstration, so you may want to consider watching the Youtube version. This episode is a re-air from earlier in 2023.00:00 - Bloody Dumpling Shenanigans (and Introduction)Dumplings can be deadly. What a birthday… After that story, we shift to today's guest, John Fay.John is the founder and CEO of Låda Cube (pronounced Lauda Cube). Låda Cube produces pre-fab cassettes that are used in the place of conventional stud-and-drywall walls. 04:25 - John Explains Låda CubeRecent refinements of production efficiencies has enabled Låda Cube to explore the benefits of standardization. This standardization yields multiple benefits:Final assembly is more consistent.Assembly can be handled by minimally skilled workersEntire walls can be disassembled and their parts reused–either when it's time to reconfigure a space or in the case of a more complete demolition.Låda Cube modules are small enough to be easily handled, and they fit together with a cam-lock system that each has 750 lbs of carrying power. The cassette-built wall can then be covered with a variety of finish surfaces that can be switched out when it's time for a change of decor. 10:15 - Timelapse Video John explains that specialized cassettes can serve customized features:Increased load-bearing capacityPlug-and-play electrical systemsSpace for plumbing accessThe goal is to have a system that never goes obsolete–that will be reverse compatible long into the future.John shares about one of Låda Cube's large recent projects, a series of WalMart vision centers. If the work on these centers would have been done using conventional methods, it would have taken 16 days per center. With the modules, each center was finished in 3 days.15:30 - Cost and Production PaceWe explore the topic of cost. As you might expect, this type of product is currently a premium product. Låda Cube is currently priced at $4.50/linear foot. John believes digitization and production improvements will eventually bring that number below $2. The trickle-down benefits of standardization include faster estimates and reduced errors. John said his crew can generally give a phase-one drawing within just a few hours. The Låda Cube team is now working on software integrations that will populate modules in the design phase so that estimates and invoices can be almost immediate and also transparent. We discuss both cost and quality. John explains that the ½” MDF that is their current main skin finish material. He says that they're occasionally using Avonite and, in the long run, would like to pursue partnerships with gypsum manufacturers to integrate small panels with easy seam solutions. 27:32 - Vision Center Cost BreakdownsTyler asks John to share some of the specific costs related to the Walmart vision center projects, including a large refund that the accountants struggled to process. John anticipates the development of a third-party market for exchanging components of this sort of system. He explains that there is no reason for any of their products to ever end up in a landfill. We hear about door integration when John explains that representatives from MillerKnoll contacted them to say that they've never hung a door on a truer wall. This is due to the fact that the Låda Cube cassettes are built to tolerances of 15/100”.Eddie addresses some of the mindset shifts that owners, contractors, and municipalities will need to consider in transitioning to this sort of construction. 37:50 - John's Megaphone MessageThe Låda Cube team sees themselves as changers of environments. When they approach a worksite, they try to remove the fear and tension that might be there. They want to show compassion and to champion people well.Find John Online: LinkedIn - Låda CubeCheck out the partners that make our show possible.Find Us Online: BrosPodcast.com - LinkedIn - Youtube - Instagram - Facebook - TikTok - Eddie's LinkedIn - Tyler's LinkedInIf you enjoy the podcast, please rate us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to us! Furniture is big business and big money - at least if you are the CEO of MillerKnoll. MillerKnoll makes office furniture, including that famous chair made out black mesh that everyone loves so much. But sales have been a bit soft lately and the sales team was worried about not making their bonus. During an all staff Zoom call (beware of those Zoom calls!) the question of bonuses came up and Andi Owen, CEO and passionate believer in equality, reminded her entire staff that there was a $26 million dollar goal to hit and that "you can visit Pity City but you can't live there" (sort of like Disneyland). The staff did not take it so well and the clip of Andi sharing her motivation skills went viral online and then came the apology. Was Andi Owen right to challenge her team to stop thinking about money and instead think about her money? Andi gets a pretty sweet bonus if the corporate gods smile upon her, so she may end up apologizing all the way to the bank.
Andi Owen, the CEO of MillerKnoll, recently went viral for telling employees not to ask about bonuses during a company-wide meeting, adding, “You can visit pity city, but you can't live there.” The company said Owen's comments were taken out of context and that she is committed to her team. But in a still newly post-Covid world and workplace, Owen's advice about traveling to Pity City struck a nerve. There are so many tensions still at play in blue-collar and white-collar workplaces: work-from-home, wages, and balancing work and gratification – all in the shadow of a pandemic that took about seven million lives globally. Sarah Green Carmichael has written about work culture, including the “Pity City” boss, childcare, and the merits of hybrid work as a columnist for Bloomberg Opinion. What world do we live in when you can be shot at and almost killed for ringing the wrong doorbell? This is what happened to Ralph Yarl, a 16-year-old black teenager that went to the wrong house looking for his little brother. Andrew Lester, an 84-year-old white man, didn't ask who he was looking for or say he was at the wrong house, instead, he went to the door with his gun and opened fire on the teenager. Ralph was shot at twice and could have lost his life, for showing up at the wrong house. This is another shooting and still no change to gun reform. In this case, it's not standing your ground but open season. Here's another case where a senior leader of a company went on a rant to employees on a zoom call. Andy Owen's CEO for MillerKnoll company had a town hall call with employees to address the health of the organization and respond to employees' concerns about not getting a bonus this year. Andy started the call off with words of wisdom and how to navigate through the tough times of uncertainty, while telling the employees how to treat each other and continue to work hard. Things quickly took a turn for the worse, and she went down the path of making the employees feel that they needed to figure out how they were going to come up with the $26 million that the company lost. She goes on this rant by telling them not to worry about a bonus and to leave pity city. It was later reported that Andy Owen's receives a yearly salary of $1.1 million and her bonus in 2022 was $3.9 million in stock options. Three words for Andy: READ THE ROOM. This is another real world example of a leader that is tone-deaf and refuses to deal with the truth and reality of this important issue. Welcome to Season Five Episode Ten of Authentic Filters! Today's episode includes a visual demonstration, so you may want to consider watching the Youtube version. After a short story about deadly dumpling shenanigans, we shift to today's guest, John Fay. John is the founder and CEO of, Låda Cube (pronounced Lauda Cube). Låda Cube produces pre-fab cassettes that are used in the place of conventional stud-and-drywall walls. John starts out with a review of how the cassettes function and the benefits they offer. The refinement of production efficiencies has enabled Låda Cube to explore the benefits of standardization. This standardization yields multiple benefits: Final assembly is more consistent. Assembly can be handled by minimally skilled workers Entire walls can be disassembled and their parts reused–either when it's time to reconfigure a space or in the case of a more complete demolition. Låda Cube modules are small enough to be easily handled, and they fit together with a cam-lock system that each has 750 lbs of carrying power. The cassette-built wall can then be covered with a variety of finish surfaces that can be switched out when it's time for a change of decor. John explains that specialized cassettes can serve customized features: Increased load-bearing capacity Plug-and-play electrical systems Space for plumbing access The goal is to have a system that never goes obsolete–that will be reverse compatible long into the future. John shares about one of Låda Cube's large recent projects, a series of WalMart vision centers. If the work on these centers would have been done using conventional methods, it would have taken 16 days per center. With the modules, each center was finished in 3 days. We explore the topic of cost. Tyler asks John to share some of the specific costs related to the Walmart vision center projects, including a large refund that the accountants struggled to process. John anticipates the development of a third-party market for exchanging components of this sort of system. He explains that there is no reason for any of their products to ever end up in a landfill. We hear about door integration when John explains that representatives from MillerKnoll contacted them to say that they've never hung a door on a truer wall. This is due to the fact that the Låda Cube cassettes are built to tolerances of 15/100”. Eddie addresses some of the mindset shifts that owners, contractors, and municipalities will need to consider in transitioning to this sort of construction. John's Megaphone Message: The Låda Cube team sees themselves as changers of environments. When they approach a worksite, they try to remove the fear and tension that might be there. They want to show compassion and to champion people well. Employee well-being should be at the forefront of every CEO's mind, not only because it is the right thing to do from a humanistic perspective, but also because your reputation as a leader and the longevity of your company depends on it. Companies rise and fall - usually because of of ego and hubris - and our industry is no different. Take CareerBuilder and Indeed for example; each to varying degrees are facing headwinds thanks to the unbridled belief that the good times will always roll and the competition is unworthy. Based on news this week, it's looking more and more like Indeed is on the road to be the next CareerBuilder, and the boys dig in. Additionally, consolidation continues, as Fama has acquired Social Intelligence, making them a juicy acquisition target for the likes of Checkr and Sterling. What's more, the CEO of MillerKnoll put her foot in her mouth and is paying the price on social media, while Amazon's AWS is taking aim at Google and Microsoft's OpenAi as another player in the artificial intelligence arms race. By the way, if you're in Vegas for UNLEASH America next week, stop by the WorkHuman booth on Wed. and say Hi (you might even get a T-shirt).

You just can't underestimate the satisfaction of a great office chair. We spend most of our waking lives at work, often sitting, so comfort is important. And for many, the location of work has changed. Accelerated by the pandemic, your workplace is as likely to be a kitchen or den as it is a floor of offices. The KNOLL company had some of the most celebrated chairs in the world including Eero Saarinen's womb and tulip chairs, the Barcelona chair by Mies Van der Rohe, and the Wassilly chair by Marcel Breuer. Herman Miller was famous for the Aeron chair, the Noguchi table, the Marshmallow sofa, and the Eames Lounge Chair, among many others. These companies have been the leaders in well-designed, comfortable office furniture for generations, and in 2021 they merged. With us today is Ryan Anderson, vice president for global research and insights at MillerKnoll – and podcast host of Looking Forward: Conversations about the Future of Work. Later on, jazz with the remarkable Tony Desare.

Ryan Anderson is the Vice President of Global Research and Insights at Miller Knoll, leading research efforts in partnership with global collaborators and sharing insights with organizations around the world. With nearly 30 years of industry experience, Ryan's work focuses on how places can be better designed and managed to support positive and productive experiences. Ryan Anderson spent 10 years of his career studying the intersection of technology and the workplace, and noticed that organizations were struggling to create balanced and flexible workspaces to support their employees. After studying the state of return to office across the US and Europe, he determined that employees wanted more control over their work week and schedule flexibility. Anderson suggested designing with employees instead of for them, and cultivating a conversation about how the team can be more productive and impactful. By recognizing the value of strong and weak ties, and shifting away from individual workstations, organizations can create a more community-oriented and productive space. In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. How is the state of return to office varying across different cities? 2. What strategies can organizations use to design workspaces that work for their employees? 3. How can organizations cultivate productive communities that foster a sense of belonging and purpose?
Designing the future of how we live and work is a hot topic, and one that has businesses worldwide wondering how they can get people back into offices in a post covid world. He and his team of researchers survey over 40,000 people annually to understand how to create the best possible spaces for working and living. And he's not afraid to go deep when it comes to remote work, distributed work and the future of the workplace. The painted tan side panels of these units contain lead levels that exceed the safe federal standards and create a lead poisoning hazard. Lead is a neurotoxin and is particularly dangerous for young children. About 700 of these pieces were sold at Herman Miller and Design Within Reach stores nationwide and online at store.hermanmiller.com, dwr.com, and on other websites. If you purchased one of these desks or storage units, contact MillerKnoll at 1-800-338-2107 or via email at recall_info@hermanmiller.com to determine if your unit is on the recall. If so, you can receive either a full refund and free product pickup or a free repair kit that includes a replacement panel. https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2023/MillerKnoll-Recalls-Desk-and-Storage-Units-Due-to-Violation-of-the-Federal-Lead-Paint-Ban-Lead-Poisoning-Hazard-Recall-Alert #millerknoll #desks #storageunits #lead #poisoning #recall

These questions get asked so often that Ryan invited Chris to join him on the podcast to share a digestible explainer of all things metaverse—or, as Chris prefers to refer to it, Web3. If you've ever found yourself lost in conversations about blockchains, NFTs, virtual reality, and the like, Chris breaks it all down and explains what it means to the future of business and our lives. Inclusive design is a topic not nearly enough people are talking about. This week's guests are working to fix that. Jolene De Jong is an Applied Insights + Design Specialist at MillerKnoll and Joseph White is the company's Director of Design Strategy. They recently collaborated on a white paper for the peer-reviewed CRE Journal. In it—and in this episode—they unpack the need for architects and designers to move beyond accommodation of unique needs and toward a more widespread adoption of the notion that spaces that follow inclusive design principles simply work better for everyone. Inclusive design is also a key part of MillerKnoll's POV on the future of work, which you can read here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/designing-better-tomorrow-millerknoll/.
The stars align on this episode of the Gratitude Through Hard Times podcast when two Italian empaths get together for a conversation about mentorship, leadership and personal growth that happens to coincide with the 7:47 Club's seven anniversary. Host Chris Schembra welcomes Matt Tedesco, VP & General Manager for Americas East at the iconic furniture design company MillerKnoll, for a lively give-and-take about his passion for coaching and unique approach to group engagement and retention. It all starts with embracing the journey! They reflect on the pitfalls of results-oriented management, strategies for getting out from under social constructs that do not serve and the compounding power of positivity. Matt highlights a pivotal spiritual moment that has shaped his value system and explains how vulnerability has empowered him — as a coach, an artist, a musician, a father, friend and colleague. Self-awareness is foundational to all the other elements that connect us with each other, says Matt, helping us tune into our own emotions and — as importantly — the challenges experienced by others. You'll also learn about what Matt calls his “cheat sheet to the world,” a simple but profound strategy that guarantees we're bringing our best selves, personally and professionally. Even when the world disappoints, we have it within us to learn and move on with open hearts. “Focus on gratitude, focus on the things that are positive,” says Matt. “Bringing positive energy is a matter of deciding.” This dynamic exchange is your first step! If you'd like to learn more about Chris and his 7:47 Virtual Gratitude Experience, please visitthis link. And click here to listen to previous episodes of Gratitude Through Hard Times. KEY TOPICS:Deflection and Dreams: Chris asks Matt reflect on his humility about accomplishments and the ways in which he feels pride in any endeavor that offers value-add in some way.Results-Oriented Living: The societal push is often towards outcomes, but Matt is committed to embracing the process and lessons learned along the way.Goals are finite. Then what? It's got to be the going — not the getting there — that's good.Putting It Out There: By making his music available on Spotify, which is a vulnerable thing to do, Matt is reclaiming an artistic part of himself. Self-consciousness be damned! We can't be good at everything. And that's the point! Art and other creative, spiritual or physical pursuits (even those that humble us) can be tools for continuous learning and movement towards self-actualization.Matt envisions members of his teams as ensemble musicians playing in concert; not basketball players taking unilateral command. The focus is on collaboration; not scrambling to hit every basket.Recalling a Pivotal Spiritual Moment: An angry kid lacking in confidence, Matt felt a spontaneous transformational release — and sense of equanimity in the world — following his eighth-grade confirmation in the Catholic Church. What does it mean to be of service and actually help? Matt believes the best coaching/mentoring starts with intentional, active listening. No pre-conceived notions or agenda.Above all, most people simply want to be heard — witnessed in a way that touches something deep in them and connects them to others and a sense of understanding.Nervous, sad confused: Matt's wife recently provided him safe harbor, a place to be fully seen, when he chose to get vulnerable and share personal and professional doubts.Defining the True Nature of Love: Borrowing inspiration from "Man's Search for Meaning," the Holocaust survivor Viktor E. Frankl's compelling take on what matters most in life, Matt's take is that our ultimate meaning isn't money, sex or power. It's simply love.Defining Leadership: Loving team members and those we serve requires whole-hearted commitment to listening and caring (that ideally resides in mutuality and reciprocity).Matt's Strategy for Moving Beyond Social Constructs That Do Not Serve:Cultivate awareness.Welcome uncomfortable, vulnerable feelings.Question and examine emotions as they arise.Own those moments of so-called “weakness” without judgment. How to erode performance? Deny, suppress or withdraw from vulnerable emotions.Gratitude as a Tool for Retention:No. 1: It must be authentic.Tokens like a pizza party or group “atta boy” aren't enough.Keep an eye out for the smaller acts, which often matter just as much as the big.Make the recognition specific and personal.Communicate in a way that makes people feel seen and heard. You will be most generous and present when leading from a place of love.Accentuate the Positive! Negative thoughts beget more. Don't miss the opportunity to energize everyone across the enterprise with the force for good that is gratitude!Finding the universal in the specific: By articulating exactly why we have gratitude and celebrating those who inspire it we are spreading a powerfully positive contagion. All in the Perspective: Whether kids on his son's lacrosse team or his top managers and staff, Matt focuses on Attitude and Work Ethic — the only two things we can fully control. The majority of us are capable, despite (or because of!) personal challenges or setbacks. The world will disappoint, but it's critical that we move on.Recipe for Success: For most of us, hard work and a smile are the two key ingredients.Looking for Outcome-Based Results? Here's a measure: Have you gotten a little better? You Are Not Alone: We're all on the journey together and interconnected There is tremendous power in it!QUOTABLE“He blends doing a good job in corporate American with having an artistic expression and play on the side. And it's a pretty cool balance!” (Chris)“To be a great leader, you have to do the work.” (Chris)“It is not about the result. It's about the process and really trying to enjoy and find meaning … If you only focus on the result, once you get that result, then what?” (Matt) LINKS/FURTHER RESOURCES:Matt's Spotify Albums"The Radical Leap: A Personal Lesson in Extreme Leadership," by Steve Farber."Man's Search for Meaning," by Viktor E. Host Ryan Anderson welcomes Phil Kirschner of global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company. A self-proclaimed “accidental workplace strategist,” Phil fell into managing workplace strategy transformation efforts at Credit Suisse more than a decade ago and never looked back. As a result, his openness to supporting new ways of working fuels this fast-paced exploration of the need for executive-level change management, for widening our perception of what “hybrid” means, for using AI to identify moments that matter in the physical workplace, and more. Who hasn't had a burger and fries at a Denny's or Bob's Big Boy? There are thousands of them, not just in Los Angeles, where they were born, but across the country. These family restaurants are core to how America defined itself after World War II. Cars, families, space flight, modernism....the new world order.... And who defined that fun and futuristic look? Our pioneering LA woman architect: Helen Fong. She was born in 1927 in Los Angeles Chinatown where her immigrant parents ran a laundry that she often worked at as a child. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was still intact, and you can imagine this presented many challenges for Helen as she grew up. She went on to create some of LA's most iconic diners, which are still celebrated by legions of fans. These landmarks have cemented their place in pop culture. Strip malls and roadside attractions, driving with the top down, hair blowing in the wind and another day of sunshine. Helen's design work helped create this image, yet many don't know the story of the woman who they have to thank. On today's episode: Fast Food and Radical Rooflines: Helen Fong Shapes Los Angeles Coffee Shops. With her legendary unerring taste and a total commitment to produce absolute perfection in her self, her work, her products, and how she would be remembered, Florence Knoll is generally recognized as the single most powerful figure in the field of modern design. As an architect, Florence was the force behind the seamless integration of furniture, space, textile, art, graphic design into a perfect brand concept: Total Design. Her influence transcends the specific disciplines, she was the force integrating them, and in her work at the Knoll Planning Unit, she promulgated the values that still motivate architects and designers today: solve the program with scale and detailing appropriate to the interior in support of how people behave in the active environment. Here she is: Florence Knoll: Total Design. Special thanks in this episode to Paul Makovsky, Bobbye Tigerman, Alexandra Lange, Dorothy Cosonas, David Bright, Celia Bertoia, Alana Stevens, and Kathy Hiesinger and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The archival audio of Florence Knoll is provided by the Knoll Archives. Thank you to Leah Kalotay for your help with this recording. Norma Sklarek had many “firsts”. She was often credited at the start of her career as the first Black Women architect to be licensed in the United States. That distinction actually goes to Beverly Greene – Norma was the 3rd. But it didn't matter. Young black girls read her name in the likes of Ebony Magazine – a staple publication in every black household at the time – when she was included in their 1958 article on “Successful Young Architects”. As more and more discovered her career, she became their role model. Like so many women, then and now, she chose a management path. Achievement was measurable, ambition was acceptable, and competence over pizazz was a vital and necessary counterpoint to charismatic male designers in firms with large scale complex projects. As a woman and as an African American, the design path was simply not open to her, and she needed to work, she had two boys to support, and without any shame, she needed to get paid. So her work often fell shadow to the lead designer. She was the project manager, the woman behind the scenes who made sure things got done… And yet, despite the groundbreaking achievements of Norma, what is the current state of black women in the field of architecture? In the 2020 AIA Demographic survey, the association counted 94,000 members. 23,500 of these are women. There are 691 Black Women architects. As each Black woman achieves her license, it is a matter of pride to add consecutively to that very small number. It's a matter of shame that it is still so small. On today's episode, Norma Sklarek: An Extreme Bold Hand. Special thanks to Kate Diamond, Renee Kemp-Rotan, Roberta Washington, Gail Kennard, Michael Enomoto and Gruen Associates, Pat Morton, Jack Travis, Beth Gibb, Alexandra Lange, and Suzanne Mecs. The archival recording of Norma Sklarek is from the African American Architects of Los Angeles collection at the UCLA Library Center for Oral History Research.
