We dive into the history of Architect Norma Merrick Sklarek, who broke new ground as the first Black woman licensed in New York and California, with guest Tobi Ashiru reflecting on her own experiences as a Black architectural designer teaching at USC and how Norma's pioneering achievements have inspired her.————About Norma Merrick SklarekNorma Merrick Sklarek (1926-2012) was a pioneering architect who shattered racial and gender barriers in the profession. As the first Black woman licensed as an architect in New York and California, Norma made significant contributions to iconic projects such as the Fox Plaza in San Francisco, the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles, the US Embassy in Tokyo, and Terminal One at  LAX. But as a black woman, she faced a lot of discrimination throughout her career. In fact, after graduation, she was rejected by 19 firms purely because of her race and gender. But she made an impact at 5 notable firms, including Victor Gruen Associates where she worked with Frank Gehry and Cesar Pelli. She also co-founding a firm with 2 other women, named Siegel-Sklarek-Diamond, which was the first architectural practice led by women in the US. She was also the first Black woman to be part of the AIA in 1959 AND became an AIA fellow later in 1980. Sklarek's legacy extends beyond her architectural achievements; she was a passionate advocate for diversity in the field, mentoring countless young architects and leaving an indelible mark on the architecture community.About Tobi AshiruTobi is a passionate designer and alumna of the USC School of Architecture. With a mission to change the world through design,  she strives to push the boundaries of creativity. Born in Nigeria and raised in South Africa, Tobi seeks to create contextually relevant work that celebrates blackness. She's a interdisciplinary designer with diverse experiences as an architectural designer, installation artist, forever student, educator, and business owner. She stays committed to the advancement of underrepresented voices in many ways and through Poché Design Studio, a black woman owned design agency she co-founded, where the mission is to occupy and amplify the black space in design. Tobi is currently an adjunct professor at USC School of Architecture where she is the lead instructor for the A-Lab program.Instagram: @bypocheWebsite: tobiashiru.com, bypoche.com ____View all the visually rich 1-min reels of each woman on IG below:Instagram: Amber AsayInstagram: Women Designers Pod

The Art of Balance: Meg Franklin on Life, Cats, and Painting Dreams

In this vibrant episode of the Nosy AF Podcast, I had the pleasure of chatting with the incredibly talented artist Meg Franklin. Meg's journey from the picturesque landscapes of Georgia to the bustling art scene of New York and back again is a tale of passion, creativity, and the pursuit of an artist's dream. Meg shared her experiences of living in New York for 15 years, her eventual return to Georgia, and the accidental acquisition of a bunch of cats. We delved into her dream of ditching the regular job to paint full-time, free from the distractions of office life. Throughout the episode, we explored Meg's artistic process, including her transition from painting on velvet to using vibrant colors on black backgrounds. Meg's work is influenced by the color palettes of her childhood, Muppets, and even the movie Fantasia, which she watches repeatedly for inspiration. We also touched on the importance of networking in New York and how Meg has adapted to connecting with the art world digitally since moving back to Georgia. Meg's insights into what makes a good painting and her criteria for her own work provided a fascinating glimpse into the mind of an artist. Meg and I discussed the benefits of art residencies, like the one we both attended at Pooch Cove, and how such experiences can rejuvenate an artist's creativity. We also touched on the darker side of the art world, including the recent tragedy involving the Titanic submarine expedition near Newfoundland, where we had our residency. As always, I aim to bring you closer to the lives of fascinating individuals, and Meg Franklin's story is no exception. Her blend of humor, artistic insight, and candid sharing made for an inspiring and entertaining episode. So grab your paintbrushes, and let's dive into the colorful world of Meg Franklin on this episode of Nosy AF. Remember to stay connected and let me know your thoughts on the episode. And if you're curious about my own art and film projects, check out my website at MissGraham.com. Until next time, keep being curious and nosy about the world around you! Topics discussed: Meg's Vibrant Color Palette The Necessity of New York for Artistic Success The Importance of Artist Friendships I made this bio about Meg:(well me and Chat GPT did) Meg Franklin, a painter originally from Georgia, embarked on a creative journey that led her to New York, where she resided for about 15 years. Despite her rich educational background, including an MFA in Painting from the New York Academy of Art in 2013, an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Florida in 2007, and a BA in English from Washington and Lee University in 2004, Meg felt the magnetic pull of her Southern roots. Now back in Georgia, she finds inspiration for her art in the serene charm of her home state. Meg's artistic achievements are highlighted by solo and two-person exhibitions, such as the collaborative "Appetite of Ghosts" with Marcia Resnick at Turn Gallery, New York, NY, in 2019, and solo shows like "Gloryland" at Occulus Gallery, Pacific Design Center, Los Angeles, CA, and "Small, Small World" at Marvin Gardens, Ridgewood, NY, both in 2018. Her contributions extend to various group exhibitions, showcasing her work in cities like London, San Francisco, and Brooklyn. In addition to her visual accomplishments, Meg has left her mark in literary circles. Noteworthy publications include features in "The Coastal Post," where Jen Shepard explored "The Hazy Identity of Objects" in November 2017, and "The Cluster Mag," which showcased "Not-Men" in May 2013. Roxy Kirshenbaum delved into Meg's artistry in "The Artists: Meg Franklin" for "The WILD Magazine" in the same year. Maria Teicher provided insights "Inside the Studio with Meg Franklin" on the NYAA Blog in November 2012, giving readers a glimpse into Meg's creative process. Despite the twists and turns of her artistic journey, Meg Franklin continues to seek authenticity and fulfillment in her art, guided by her experiences and the charm of her Southern surroundings. I have a very tiny a personnel connection to this one, I was at this meeting and many years later lived in the same town as Polly and would run into her at meetings, but never put it together until I listened to this and thought... that sounds like Polly P. I had no idea she was one of the speakers I listened to that night. If you have never been to one of AA's International Conventions I would suggest it if you possibly can, its an amazing experience. I'm Josh Cooperman and this is Convo By Design with a look back at some of the conversations that I feel have shaped my current views of the design industry. Influencers creatives who directly impact the direction of our business. This is Matte Black's, Cliff Fong. Last week you heard from Cliff on a panel and this week, I wanted to showcase him exclusively from our conversation back in 2016. Cliff's ideas about design, taste, style and their direct relationship to the work he does, for whom he does it are inextricably tied together. We speak about him as a design show judge and how that work differs form his views of design in the real world. I would argue these viewpoints are more relevant now than they were then because since the pandemic, haven't most design professionals become a reality design show in some form or fashion? I would argue that most participate actively in the conversation now as opposed to that in 2016. One of the other aspects to this that I hope you notice are the things Cliff does around the work, as in, not the work itself but how he thinks about it and you fill find a certain zen state in his approach that has truly influenced the approach I take to my own work. I can still do way better at that, but this really did help me and perhaps it can help you too, if you're into that sort of thing. Enjoy my conversation with Cliff Fong from 2016, right after this. Thank you, Cliff. Loved hearing this again. I remember it like it was last week at the Crestron showroom in the Pacific Design Center. I don't think that showroom is there anymore, but it is here. Thank you to CXD sponsors and partners, ThermaSol, Article Furniture, York Wallcoverings, Moya Living and Franz Viegener for your continued support. Of course, thank you for downloading, subscribing and listening to the show. Thank you for the emails of support and the guest submissions. I love them and it has allowed me to find some amazing talent to showcase. Please remember why you do what you do and for whom you do it. Designers, architects, artists, product designers, showroom managers, publicists, magazine editors, publishers, set decorators and everyone else that makes our industry stronger by the day, this show is for you. That's why I do it. Thanks for listening. Be well, and take today first.

My voice changes every year, just like yours does, and while I have gotten comfortable with the recorded sound of my voice, strange cadence and often tangential leaps, it is very odd hearing these older episodes. But, I do it because I started recording these conversations in 2012 for a 2013 Convo BY Design launch. I get guest suggestions often, very often in fact, and almost all of them are for amazing photographers, but on occasion the suggestion stops me in my tracks. On those very rare occasions, no matter where I am or what I am doing, the photographer is so good that I need to ask them to be on the show right then. This is an example... On April 13th I saw that I had a DM on Instagram from Jaime (@elespaiz) making a suggestion that I do a show about a specific image, a global publicity photo for "Jurassic World Dominion". What was interesting to me is that the link Jaime sent was to a series of behind the scenes images for the shoot, and the description was fascinating. The next post from the photographer showed the end result, and it was amazing. At this point, some browsing was in order. What I found was some of the absolute best photography I have seen. Let me pause for a moment to say something important. If you have listened to the show for any period of time then you know I love looking at great images. I find many of my guest's works to be some of the best you'll find, but this photographer was different. The photographer was Art Streiber, and it seems most every one I know is very familiar with Art. In fact, after being invited to a student exhibit at California Baptist University by the director of the photography program, Christopher Kern, I mentioned to him that I was excited about a new potential guest. He response was that he'd known Art for years. I'm embarrassed to say that I wasn't aware of Art Streiber before Jaime's message. How on earth had I never seen Art's work before? To be more specific, I most likely had seen his work before, and probably had seen it often, but I was completely unaware of Art. I am hoping that with this show I help you avoid that embarrassment. Art is a Los Angeles-based freelance photographer specializing in portrait, reportage, entertainment, and advertising photography, and for the last decade, Streiber's imagery has been selected to appear in American Photography and Communication Arts Photography Annual. To put his talent in perspective, let me list a few of his clients... Starting with Editorial clients we have the likes of Vanity Fair, Entertainment Weekly, Wired, New York, Fortune, ESPN, GQ and The New York Times Magazine. His Entertainment clients include ABC, CBS, NBC, HBO, A&E, CNN, MSNBC, Fox, TBS, TNT, The CW, IFC, MTV, SyFy Channel, Showtime, TVLand, Universal Studios, Columbia-TriStar, Dreamworks, Paramount, STX, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. Studios. For Advertising clients we have Chase Bank, KFC, Kohler, Cadillac, Miller Lite, Heineken, Subway, Farmers Insurance, Oakley and Disneyland. Art Streiber is at the top of the game. As an educator, Art has lectured at the International Center of Photography, The Santa Fe Workshops, Art Center College of Design, PDN's Photo Plus, Savannah College of Art & Design, ATLAS Institute at University of Colorado at Boulder and at The Stanford Publishing Course - his BA in Communications is from Stanford by the way. Having been honored by American Photo Magazine, the Pacific Design Center and the Los Angeles Center of Photography, it seems I am not the only one that is struck by the amazing imagery he creates, and as you hear in this show, he creates his shots... at times with very complex sets, production, and post work. For me, what sums up Art's work best, and perhaps the biggest compliment I can give him, is that I see the clear inspiration he draws from the great portrait, fashion and documentary photographers of the mid 20th Century. Today's image is a perfect example. As we were picking the image for this show, which wasn't easy at all considering there are about 100 of his shots I have questions about, Art described a few images to me as "BIG productions under intense parameters". That's intriguing. He described these shoots as "a window onto productions that perhaps your listeners don't experience / w...

Original Air Date: Monday 4 July, 9 pm EasternDescription:This week's show is a bit of a pastiche, cut together from snippets of different conversations Dean and Phil have had these past couple week. So, after a hilarious “audio check” cold open, if you hear references to topics not yet covered, don't worry, it all weaves together wonderfully by the end in what might just be one of our best shows of the year! Phil discusses the forthcoming Netflix reboot of Beverly Hills Cop and the (unwanted by the producers) role he might play in it, and whether its filming location means he lives closer to Detroit than Dean does! The subject of “soft tissue” and the importance of stretching and yoga get discussed in the wake of Phil learning about what it means to “pop a rib”. The reason firefighters carry axes gets explained. The graphic design creative explosion that was the late 70s and early 80s is the subject of a gallery exhibit at the Pacific Design Center and it leads Dean to reminisce. When he was in London, did Dean experience the magic of the Elizabeth Line? And did he get to England through the worst itinerary ever? And what exactly did he get wrong when describing the Billy Wilder failure Kiss Me Stupid? These questions all get answered and the great improv comic turned successful character actor Mike Hagerty gets remembered in “Celebrity Deaths”. And if that weren't enough, Phil takes the time to interview Russ Haslage about his career in radio, the “wonder” of Subspace, and the history of the fine works by The Federation (and how YOU can help)!

Norma Sklarek had many “firsts”.  She was often credited at the start of her career as the first Black Women architect to be licensed in the United States.  That distinction actually goes to Beverly Greene – Norma was the 3rd.   But it didn't matter.   Young black girls read her name in the likes of Ebony Magazine – a staple publication in every black household at the time –  when she was included in their 1958 article on “Successful Young Architects”.  As more and more discovered her career, she became their role model. Like so many women, then and now, she chose a management path.  Achievement was measurable, ambition was acceptable, and competence over pizazz was a vital and necessary counterpoint to charismatic male designers in firms with large scale complex projects.  As a woman and as an African American, the design path was simply not open to her, and she needed to work, she had two boys to support, and without any shame, she needed to get paid. So her work often fell shadow to the lead designer.  She was the project manager, the woman behind the scenes who made sure things got done… And yet, despite the groundbreaking achievements of Norma, what is the current state of black women in the field of architecture?  In the 2020 AIA Demographic survey, the association counted 94,000 members.  23,500 of these are women.  There are 691 Black Women architects.  As each Black woman achieves her license, it is a matter of pride to add consecutively to that very small number. It's a matter of shame that it is still so small. On today's episode, Norma Sklarek: An Extreme Bold Hand. The "Tunnel Vision" rapper, 24, was released from the hospital on Monday, two days after he was reportedly shot outside a Los Angeles restaurant where an afterparty for Justin Bieber's concert was taking place. In a video shared by TMZ taken outside Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A., Black (real name: Bill Kapri) could be seen using a walker, as he was helped into a black SUV by several people. According to a press release from the Los Angeles Police Department, a physical fight occurred "between several individuals" outside of The Nice Guy before gunshots were fired early Saturday morning at around 2:45 a.m. local time. Names of the victims were not released, though police told The Hollywood Reporter that men aged 19, 24 and 60 were struck by gunfire. Authorities also told the outlet that "multiple rounds were fired." Sources later told TMZ and NBC News that Black was among the victims. PEOPLE has not independently confirmed the victims' identities. Representatives for Black, Bieber, 27, the LAPD and The Nice Guy have not responded to PEOPLE's requests for comment. According to the LAPD, authorities identified two victims of gunshot wounds when they arrived at the scene. Paramedics with the Los Angeles Fire Department then transported the two victims to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Police also said two additional victims took themselves to local hospitals. Each of the victims were in stable condition as of Sunday morning. The LAPD added that the gunshots were "fired by an unknown suspect, who then fled south from the location." The suspect was described as a Black male. No arrests have been made as of Tuesday morning. The afterparty was hosted close to the Pacific Design Center, where Bieber had performed earlier during h.wood and Revolve's Homecoming Weekend party. Bieber and wife Hailey Baldwin — as well as other celebrity guests including Drake, Tobey Maguire and Khloé Kardashian — were reportedly seen entering The Nice Guy before the shooting. This is Convo By Design Today, we are saying goodbye to a friend and celebrating an amazing person and giant in Southern California’s design community, Rocky LaFleur. There are some people you encounter in life who make you feel better, they make you better and they lift up those around them. Rocky LaFleur was the embodiment of that. As long as I knew him, he always had a smile on his face and a word of encouragement. Rocky had a passion for his longtime friends and an openness to make new ones. We lost Rocky this past week and this flood of memories came back to me. There have been so many fun and wonderful events and I cherish the time this tight knit Southern California design community gets together. The last time I saw Rocky in person, it was to see him speak to up and coming design students at UCLA Extension. Eleanor Schrader handed the mic to Rocky and his partner in comedy, Gary Gibson and the two of them led a journey into the wonderful world of design that made these prospective designers eyes twinkle. Not just the good, but the challenging and the hard work that comes with it. Rocky was a phenomenal ambassador for the all of us in the industry, he was a dedicated mentor who gave freely of his time to help others and he always had a smile on his face. That sweet smile.Rocky’s story is special and it doesn’t end here. When you influence and positively impact the lives of so many people, your spirit endures. I was blown away in 2018, seeing Rocky recognized at the Pacific Design Center in front of so many people who were there for no other reason than to shower Rocky with the love and the recognition he deserved. A Lifetime Achievement award, given to him by the ASID, the first of its kind.Rocky has been a fixture in the Pacific Design Center, at Kneedler Fauchere, Rocky needed a home like the PDC to house his huge personality.“Rocky joined Kneedler Fauchère almost 16 years ago and I joined one year later. Believe it or not, I sat in front of his desk and every morning when I arrived he serenaded me with show tunes. That pretty much told me everything I needed to know about Rocky. He’s been one of my closest and most meaningful confidants ever since,” said Gina Dewitt, President of Kneedler Fauchère after the gala event.I sat down with Rocky in 2019. Rocky told me his story, how he, “found his people.” I could continue to gush on about how wonderful this man was, but instead, I would like to replay my conversation with Rocky, recorded in 2019 from the Kneedler Fauchere showroom in the Pacific Design Center.I want to thank Walker Zanger, presenting partner of Convo By Design, for your partnership. The work that they do and their support of the show makes it possible for me to to this. This podcast has kept me connected to the industry, to you for the past eight years and the last has definitely been the most challenging. As we start moving back to events, showcases, design houses, CEU’s and trade shows, we will have the chance to reconnect and I am so appreciative to Walker Zanger for their support of Convo By Design. My hope here is that you can take some time to sit back, turn off the phone for a few minutes and let Rocky make you feel good again. I challenge you to hear that laugh and not laugh with him, it’s impossible. I hope hearing his voice, that laugh, those stories takes away your pain for a moment.Thank you, Rocky…for everything, and thank you for listening. Until next week, be well and remember to to take today first.

Jeff Sampson was the Vice President of Marketing at the Pacific Design Center, a role he held since the later part of 2013. One of Jeff’s most notable contributions to our design community was to refocus PDC efforts of the annual West Week and Fall Market events. He did this through creative programming and a non-partisan approach to media partners. If you were a strong partner, it didn’t matter how long you were around. Jeff and I met in 2014, shortly after I started Convo By Design. I approached Jeff with an idea. I wanted to be a media partner that would record and feature Pacific Design Center programming to the trade. The podcast was brand new. The Pacific Design Center would recognize Convo By Design as a media partner which provided me a wonderful opportunity to introduce the idea of podcasting and on-demand audio to the SoCal design community. Jeff said ‘yes’, he didn’t have to do that. But he did, because that is the kind of person Jeff was. The type of person who would listen to you if you had an idea, because he was curious and because he cared. He was an excellent marketer, too. 7 years ago, not many in the trade knew what a podcast was, but Jeff recognized that he could get his remarkable programs out to more of the people, for whom he was working hard to serve, the trade partners and showrooms of the Pacific Design Center in particular and the design community as a whole would benefit.Jeff Sampson had a 20 year career in marketing with the past 6 at the PDC. He had hundreds of friends and admirers in the design community. Jeff also had a life outside of design, where many more will miss him. They will miss him around the holidays, when Jeff would slow down and spend time with family and friends, at happy hour, which was kind of like an any-time holiday. Jeff loved Doris Day and also had an affinity for Rhoda and Phyllis in TV and in real life, recognizing and appreciating all their imperfections. He loved traveling and sharing his experiences. He loved Paris “when it drizzles”, and “when it sizzles.” Jeff had style, he had grace and he took his exit too soon. I wanted to honor Jeff the best way I know how, and that would be through sharing him in his own words. This is a conversation I had with Jeff in 2015. He was episode 15 of Convo By Design which means this episode was recorded and aired within months of starting the podcast. We met at his office in the PDC. This is Jeff Sampson. That was my conversation with Jeff Sampson from 2015. Jeff was gracious with his time and his partnership. He was a good friend and amazing supporter of the Southern California design community. To those of you who knew Jeff well and called him a friend, I’m so sorry for your loss. I want to thank Jeff for his time and his incredible contribution to Convo By Design, I also want to thank you for listening. You make this podcast possible and it is comforting to know that we all share in the work and we can also share the grief at times like these. Please make sure you are subscribed so you don’t miss an episode and if you want to continue this conversation, you can find us on Instagram @ConvoXDesign, with and “X”. After 5 years hosting, producing and publishing Convo By Design, I launched the Design Influencer Group. The need for industry trends and information not just about design, but about the business of design is absolutely crucial to the future of the industry. Designers and architects have seen their business model fundamentally change sure to the rise of social media, movement from brick and mortar locations to “out-of-district” locations and in some cases, exclusively online. In addition to these challenges, design creatives are being asked to do more, for less. Revenue models are being challenged and online competition for creative services are popping-up and dropping out at an alarming rate. The Design Influencer Group is a forum for a select group of design trade professionals to discuss these industry issues and design ideas that are shaping our design community here in Southern California. Grant Kirkpatrick is one of those architects that is actively shaping the way we view Los Angeles. He, through his firm KAA both creates and re-imagines places and spaces. The firm’s mission states a devotion to warm, contemporary design. Providing solutions for modern living and at the same time, he has a love and a sense of duty to protect the structures that Southern California offers the world. Grant and I sat down at the Vondom showroom during West Week at the Pacific Design Center to talk about Southern California architecture, his Marina Del Rey offices that have already lived lives as the original Hobie Catamaran Factory and a warehouse for all of the props and set decor from Cast Away. **Side note, can you believe that Cast Away was released in the year 2,000? In the following conversation, Grant tells me about the fact that his current offices served as the prop house if you will during filming and I thought it would be fun to reintroduce you to a past guest on Convo By Design from the 2016 WestEdge Design Fair, Rosemary Brandenburg. Brandenburg was the Set Decorator on Cast Away, a Robert Zemekis film starring Tom Hanks, Helen Hunt, Peter Von Berg and of course Wilson, the volleyball. It’s one of those Southern California stories that ties architecture and film making, seamlessly. Back to Grant. Kirkpatrick has published a new book called California Contemporary: The Houses of Grant C. Kirkpatrick. This covers 30 years of architectural mastery in Southern California. These homes possess elements that have come to embody the California lifestyle. Architects from around the world try to emulate elements of the modern style and use of materials, not to mention the seamless flow between indoors and out. Kirkpatrick, as you might imagine, has a solid roster of celerities for whom he has designed home, including; Matt Damon, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and of course, of course, Tom Hanks. So the circle is complete. This is KAA Design’s Grant Kirkpatrick. And after Grant, Set Decorator of America member, Rosemary Brandenburg. Have you ever been told you need to speak to promote your business? Have you ever been told you’d be more valuable to your employer if you spoke more on the job? Today, we will explore how you go about making these changes and the impact they can have on your career and your life. Corinne Enslin was raised in the high desert and forests of the Reno/Tahoe area. The colorful scenery and beautiful lakes of northern Nevada fueled her love for nature, art, and design. She studied at the University of Reno, Nevada. Originally, she pursued sciences for the medical field. However, her deeper artistic side won her over. She changed directions and followed her passions. After graduating with honors, she landed the highly sought after internship at Wendell Norris and Associates (president of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) NV chapter). This developed into a permanent position soon after. They quickly put her talents to work. She wrote design articles and organized the newsletters for the Nevada chapter of ASID. She was soon given the opportunity to travel with the team to Los Angeles and design for clients in the entertainment industry. Due to Corinne’s success designing at Wendell Norris and Associates firm at just 24 years old, she was offered a job in Pasadena, CA designing Kitchens for Siematic. She ignited their showroom, turned profits around, and showed impeccable customer relationships. She was then offered a position as a Lead Designer at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. During her flourishing career in Los Angeles, she met her future husband. He was building and remodeling homes in Beverly Hills, Bel Air, and Hancock Park. They quickly fell in love and transformed into quite the team. They remodeled large estates, designed homes from the ground up, and restored historical architecture inside and out. Soon after, Revivals Design was born and a showroom soon followed. The top priority of Revivals Design is bringing to reality the beautiful spaces that everyone can enjoy and transition through together, leaving them satisfied and inspired. Fast Talk with Vickey Wachtel and Courtney Barker with guest Jeanette Chasworth Jeanette Chasworth's clients have nicknamed her “the color whisperer” because of her approach to creating incredible rooms or homes for her clients. When starting a new project, she first listens to the needs and desires of both the client and the house. Instead of fitting her style to a project, she uses her intuition and design knowledge to create a unique environment that weaves together each client's unique tastes, preferences and functional needs to create a space or home that reflect the client's personality. After working with Jeanette, clients describe their new space as “visual expressions of their personality”. Their homes move from feeling chaotic to feeling more like a sanctuary. There is a sense of peace and comfort created by colors and textures that now harmonize with the energy of the client—and with their home. As a result, Jeanette's portfolio illustrates great diversity in design, as her philosophy is unbounded by a particular style, and her inspiration draws from the desires that houses may ‘whisper in her ear'. In addition to Jeanette's innate talent with color and design, she earned a degree from Los Angeles' Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM). Next were varying assignments, from showrooms at the Pacific Design Center, interior design firms, drapery manufacturers, and the assistant to the president and designer of a Bausman & Co., a premier furniture manufacturer. In 2002, Jeanette opened her own design firm and her journey an interior designer took a new and exciting turn. In addition to managing numerous interior design projects., she has taken her love one step further, by being an interior design instructor. She has inspired students at Citrus College in Glendora, the University of California at Riverside, and Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

http://www.bizbash.com/sunny_climes_inspire_hboand_8217_s_peachy_emmy_bash/los-angeles/story/6642/ "...HBO, always a big winner, unambiguously celebrated another change this year: the ceremony’s move from September to August. The cable network acknowledged the shift from the brink of fall to the waning days of summer by transforming the Pacific Design Center’s fountain plaza into a wonderland setting for what event designer Billy Butchkavitz called “an enchanted evening by the sea.” He added, “I got to have fun with it because it was in the summertime.” When speaking with Billy about his vision, he gave me two ideas to build my set around. The idea of a luxurious sound that one may enjoy while vacationing by the sea and the inspiration for that sound was a song Billy suggested called Night & Day. I used Night & Day as the "leitmotif," or recurring theme/musical idea and used the three instances of the song in this mix as pivot points to go in other directions of vibes and feeling. This set was played with 3 drummers who also did their own thing at times throughout the night. After the Jazz grooves we got into dancing music and all and it was a great night. I even wore a suit that was 'Salmon,' or kind of pink...so did the drummers! I don't mind costumes at all as this isn't just a dj thing, it's a spectacular spectacle. A breezy and celebratory evening under the stars entertaining the entertainers and I'm glad that I can share what that sounds like. Footprints On The Moon - Johnny Harris Night & Day - ?
