James Patry is a lifelong Red Sox fan from New Hampshire who is closing in on his goal of visiting all 30 Major League ballparks. James shares how his love of the game was born in the backyard where his older brother Oscar patiently pitched tennis balls to him night after night, and how baseball has remained a constant thread in his life ever since. We hear stories of traveling with his late father to stadiums like the Metrodome and Jacobs Field, and how he plans to make Target Field the final stop on his ballpark journey as a tribute to those memories. James and Anna reflect on the unique energy of ballpark crowds, the characters in the cheap seats, and how baseball helps us explore the country and connect more deeply.Find Baseball Bucket List Online:Twitter: @BaseballBucketFacebook: @BaseballBucketListInstagram: @Baseball.Bucket.ListWebsite: baseballbucketlist.comThis podcast is part of the Curved Brim Media Network:Twitter: @CurvedBrimWebsite: curvedbrimmedia.comJoin us in June of 2025 for the Alaska Midnight Sun Game! October 5, 2007 The Cleveland Indians can thank a bug infestation at Jacobs Field for helping them defeat the New York Yankees, 2 - 1 in 11 innings, and take a 2-0 lead in the ALDS. The bugs are at their worst in the eighth inning, when a flustered Joba Chamberlain gives up the tying run on a wild pitch. The bugs descended upon Jacobs Field in the eighth inning of Game Two like a Biblical plague come to destroy the New York postseason. Indian Pitcher Fausto Carmona pitched through the swarm unaffected for the win.October 5, 1921 - New York is host to the first one-city World Series since 1906 and the Polo Grounds is the site for all nine games. Carl Mays of the Yankees needs 86 pitches to set the Giants down on five hits, four of them by Frankie Frisch, as Babe Ruth drives in the first run of the Series in the opening inning of the 3 - 0 Yankees win.October 5, 1929 - New York Giants Mel Ott and Chuck Klein of the Philadelphia Phillies go into a head-to-head doubleheader tied at 42 home runs apiece. In the opener, Klein homers for the Phillies off Carl Hubbell in his first at-bat to take the home run lead. In the nightcap, Phillies pitchers intentionally walk Ott five times rather than give him a chance to tie Klein. The last walk comes with the bases loaded. Lefty O'Doul of the Phillies has six hits on the day for a National League season-record of 254 hits.October 5, 1953 - The New York Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game Six of the World Series. Billy Martin collects his 12th Series hit, a single to center field in the bottom of the ninth inning, that gives the Yankees their fifth World Championship in a row.Historical Recap performed by:Robyn Newton from - Robyn Says

Mike Hargrove, former MLB manager who led the Cleveland Indians to two World Series appearances, shares his thoughts about a variety of topics, including the electric atmosphere at Jacobs Field in the mid-to-late 90s, the confidence and swagger of those powerhouse Indians teams, the heartache of an extra-innings loss to the Florida Marlins in Game 7 of the '97 World Series and his experiences in the hours immediately after that game, his approach to managing (including the fine line between becoming friendly with players and maintaining necessary distance), what he learned about managing from Billy Martin, the team's name change from Indians to Guardians in '22, the most talented player he ever managed, the current state of Major League Baseball (including analytics and rules changes) and much more.
Dan, Joey and Mark. Mark Mathewson and Joey Stockton from Kendall-Jackson, join Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country. Joey Stockton is the winemaker in charge of Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay and Mark Methewson is VP of Hospitality. CWC has featured KJ before, on this episode recorded on October 19, 2016, when KJ winemaster Randy Ullom was our guest. KJ is the official NBA wine partner. This began during the pandemic when NBA players were confined to hotels and some of them complained about the poor wine selection available to them. When the folks at KJ heard about that, they sent 50 cases of their wine, which really got people's attention and led to the official sponsorship deal. However this is not KJ's first foray into sports sponsorships. Dan Berger did a speaking engagement at the opening of Jacobs Field in Cleveland. He was in Ohio for another reason, and Randy Ullom invited Dan to Cleveland to talk about KJ wines, which were going to be the exclusive wine supplier to the luxury boxes at Jacobs Field. Climate Ride, coming in August KJ is hosting a fund raising event called The Climate Ride on August 17. Julia Jackson is a climate philanthropist who has funded an organization called Grounded, which funds high-impact climate solutions. She wanted to do a fund raiser, so they started a collaboration with Climate Ride. The ride starts and finishes at KJ. There are 4 routes to choose from, from short to long, for riders of every level of endurance. The most ambitious one is 81 miles with 4700 feet of elevation. We will have more about Climate Ride in the weeks before the event, on this show. There will be wines from KJ, beers from Seismic Brewing and cider from Golden State, along with music and food from the KJ culinary team. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Rodney Strong for info on the 2024 Summer Concert series. Speaking of events, tomorrow is the Sonoma County Vintners' annual Taste of Sonoma event, also at KJ. Dan Berger will be wearing his Argentine straw hat. Joey Stockton started his career in wine in Washington state, then worked in Napa Valley and started at KJ when they started in 2011. Now he is the Chardonnay winemaker. KJ Dry Riesling The first wine they taste is a 2022 dry Riesling. They saw a quote from Dan Berger that there is not enough dry Riesling out there. Back in 2018 they had the same idea and started making it. They made it in a concrete egg, a ceramic egg and stainless steel. When the ceramic egg broke, they had to work with the concrete egg and steel. Dan says it has just a trace of sugar and it is perfectly balanced and has perfect varietal aroma. Next they taste the KJ Chardonnay. Dan has written about how complicated it is to make this high quality wine consistently year after year, with a high production volume. The grapes all come from Mendocino, Monterey and Santa Barbara, all coastal regions, and cool surf towns. As time goes by, the KJ approach to Chardonnay has evolved and today shows better acidity than before. This wine has tastes of White Burgundy. It is not sweet. They do “surly aging” meaning they age the wine on the lees and they stir the barrels monthly. Mark Matthewson is VP of Hospitality (not Operations, as originally stated). KJ has a property in Tuscany that Dan says is amazing.

The New York Yankees are going through a horrific stretch without Aaron Judge in the lineup but that is no excuse for the rest of the team or the lineup that Cashman put together. On this episode of "Sabol Brothers on the Baseline," Scott and John dive deep in a topic many Cleveland sports fans don't know about - the Failed Cleveland Dome Stadium Projects from the 1980s through the early 90s. Form Ohio Governon Dick Celeste (1983-1991) and former Gateway Sports Complex (now known as Progressive Field and Rocket Mortage Fieldhouse) Executive Director Tom Chema breakdown what happen during those years. Were the Indians ever close of moving out of town? Why didn't Cleveland end up building a dome for the Browns and Indians? How close were they of renovating Cleveland Municipal Stadium? Where would they have put a proposed dome? How then Jacobs Field and Gund Arena were built and why former Browns owner Art Modell decdied not to take up the city's offer of building a new stadium near the Indians and Cavs home? These question and more will be answered! With the Cleveland Browns currently evaluating their future in their current home, this episode comes at the perfect time to rehash what happened in Cleveland with potential dome stadiums and why some of the issues surrounding the Browns and the city then, are happening now in 2023. It was not as easy to drop the Indians nickname when talking about the team before, well last season! Old habits die hard but we're fine with the team having changed its name as it was overdue. 122 years, an original member of the American League with 16 playoff appearances, 2 AL pennants and 2 WS championships. It ain't easy being a fan of the Guardians, Indians, Naps or any other Cleveland baseball team nickname! Jacobs Field opened in 1994 - the strike year. Mark had a little trouble with that. And we got through an entire podcast without mentioning 'Super' Joe Charbonneau. Please subscribe to our podcast and thanks for listening! Main Event is proud to share the long-awaited return of StadiumScene.TV's Sports Stories is here! In our first episode back, we have taken on the role of hybrid talk show and documentary by featuring a StadiumScene.TV partner helping us tell a story about a memorable or controversial experience where they have a personal experience with that story. In our first episode back, we have our old friend and now frequent pilot regular, Ralph Schudel of ralphschudel.com talk to us about growing up in northeast Ohio and experiencing the Cleveland Browns moving to Baltimore. This episode is the unofficial sequel of our popular "Colts Move to Indy" episode from 2017. Ralph introduces us to the key players of the Cleveland Browns move such as owner Art Modell and minority owner, Al Learner (spoiler alert: he returns again at the end), some former Browns coach named Bill Belichick (yes, that one), and how the old Cleveland Municipal Stadium along with the Cleveland Indians leaving for Jacobs Field (now Progressive Field) helped accelerate the move out of Cleveland. In the end, as we all know, the Browns returned to Cleveland as an expansion franchise in 1999 and Ralph closes out the episode talking about how much the Browns mean/meant to the people of northeast Ohio. Bonus question... why does legendary movie Director Richard Donner (Superman, The Goonies, Lethal Weapon series) have a bust of Abraham Lincoln in his office? Stay tuned to the very end to find out why! Check out Ralph's work: Website Twitter Instagram The full video for this episode can be found on our YouTube channel. The number one question that I get from kids that I coach when they find out I played in the big leagues is, “What was it like?” As much as I would love to break into the Bull Durham monologue of “The ballparks are like cathedrals, you hit white balls for batting practice, you never carry your luggage and the women all have long legs and brains” (all true by the way), I prefer to tell the real story of my experience and my perception of what the big leagues was really like... When I first got there, the holy shit factor was real, very real! I'll never forget looking around Jacobs Field in Cleveland when I got called up and it literally felt as if I was standing in the middle of the Roman Coliseum during the height of the gladiator days... Yet after the initial novelty wore off, playing Major League Baseball wasn't any different than playing baseball at Ford Field in Portola Valley during my Alpine Little League days… Sure, the bases were further apart, the players were better and there were way more people in the stands, but the game between the lines was essentially the exact same... That said, throughout my career I was called up and sent down 9 different times, traded twice and released (fired) 3 times... The fight for playing time was a constant battle that never ended and no matter what anybody told me, I always believed I was only as good as my next performance. I often took my at-bats home with me and my self-worth was way too dependent on external outside influences and bottom-line results that never told the entire story... With experience came knowledge and with knowledge came wisdom, but it wasn't until I was well finished with professional baseball when I was able to put these things into proper perspective... So… What was it like you ask? It was a grind but it was a beautiful f*ing grind, and I wouldn't trade a single damn day of it for any other experience in the world... -EB P.S. Have you hopped on a Team GoHard Foot Reflexology Board yet?
