Send us a textWhat happens when Arizona's rugged landscapes and life's harshest challenges shape a country music artist's authentic voice? In this captivating conversation, Shari Rowe takes us behind the curtain of her musical journey, revealing how personal tragedy transformed into creative resilience.Shari opens up about recording at Nashville's renowned Ruckus Room studio with producer Jamie Tate, working alongside session legends like Tommy Harden, Jeff King, and Jimmy Mattingly. Her stories paint a vivid picture of Nashville's recording scene while offering fascinating insights into the collaborative magic that happens when talented musicians gather in a studio. The heart of our conversation explores how Shari's upbringing in a challenging Phoenix neighborhood and painful family experiences became the foundation for her songwriting approach. After losing both parents, she made the conscious choice to channel grief into creativity rather than pausing her career. This led to writing "The Woods," a deeply personal song about her father and the mountain escapes where her family found moments of redemption amidst difficult times. What makes Shari unique is her ability to straddle two worlds - maintaining her Arizona identity while navigating Nashville's commercial music industry. Together with her husband Kevin on bass, she's built a tight-knit "band family" that tours internationally, finding particularly enthusiastic reception for country music in Poland. Her recent production work with fiddle player Stephen Bowman reveals yet another dimension to her artistry.Whether you're fascinated by the inner workings of Nashville's music scene, inspired by stories of turning pain into art, or simply love authentic country music with depth, this episode delivers powerful insights about perseverance and finding your creative voice. Shari's message resonates beyond music: discover what you love, don't give up on it, and use your unique experiences to connect authentically with others.LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comShari Rowe: https://www.sharirowe.com/ Support the show

Jamie's career in the studio world began as an intern at The Sanctuary Recording Studios, where he worked his way up to chief engineer. After The Sanctuary sold, Jamie honed his craft while working around the clock at Abtrax Recording Studios. By 2004, with 18 months of clients already booked, he took the leap and founded The Rukkus Room, which has since become one of Nashville's most iconic recording spaces. The Rukkus Room was designed by Gene Lawson of Lawson Microphones and is one of the last remaining purpose-built recording studios in Nashville. With a new album out and a New York-based band in place, Billy Joel was starting to heat up in 1976. His show at the Bottom Line in Manhattan on June 10th of that year is the proof. The album, Turnstiles, had just come out a few weeks prior. And the orchestra, as Billy was now calling the band, had been on the road for just over two months. The performance was simulcast on seven radio stations, leaving listeners today with a crystal-clear document of the night. Billy and the band, now featuring Russell Javors and Howie Emerson on guitar, Doug Stegmeyer on bass, Richie Cannata on saxophone and organ, and Liberty DeVitto on drums, was a tight, well-oiled unit. The night featured a handful of songs from the then-new record as well as concert staples from Piano Man and Streetlife Serenade. Sonically, the band straddled the New York grit of Turnstiles with the west coast feel of the previous two records. These performances laid the groundwork for The Stranger in 1977, but a listen to this night reveals an energetic, fully-realized sound from a band hungry for success. Shari and I talk about the release of her new single, Last Time. We also talk about her love of nature, singing since she was 4 and so much more. *******With the down-home flavors of pop, rock and bluegrass melded into spirited country goodness, Shari Rowe brings a fresh feel to the real-life stories that make country music what it is. ”Country music is the people's music. It just speaks about real life and about truth and it tells things how they really are,” says Faith Hill. This is country music at its best; this is Shari. A ‘roll down your windows and blare your radio' kind of music that leaves you just feeling good about life…whatever it holds. With a tongue-in-cheek, down-to-earth approachability, Shari speaks to all those going through the frustrations of everyday life, encouraging them not to give up on themselves, to overcome, and to be strong. She sings for the average, hard-working person, for the person who wants to turn up the radio and find themselves in a song. She sings for the adventurers, the outdoor lovers, the families, and the passionates who are out to live life to its fullest. "This song was so fun to write! It has a 90's pop-country feel and gives a comedic nod to something that we all can relate to – risk and regret!""'Have you ever thought "I'll never do that again!' Willie Morrison and I had so much fun bringing this storyline to life, and once again, Jamie Tate and the band captured the song's daring, and almost reckless energy perfectly!""Shooting the cover for "Last Time" was probably one of my most favorite shoots for any project that I've worked on. I've felt, since first writing the song, that there was a 90's undercurrent, so we went all out with the retro styling. I actually imagined the music video and then used that inspiration for the photos."Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ShariRowe.OfficialPageYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/sharirowehttps://twitter.com/sharirowehttps://www.instagram.com/sharirowe/?hl=enhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/2MDsIohRekR6Mwg6hzNOwM*******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@betertopodcast.comFollow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Twitter: https://twitter.com/DaunaD1Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomVideo of the interview is available here: https://youtu.be/wbQQVQWlZj0To see upcoming guests click here: https://www.dmneedom.com/better-topodcastSupport the podcast here: https://www.patreon.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomSound Design and production by Rich Zei at Third Ear Audio Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thirdearaudioproductionsBuzzsprout: Affiliate link https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=1832259©2022 Better To...Podcast with D. Not many decide to serve their country, go to college for a STEM career, and still be able to pursue their dreams of being a country music superstar. Although she was known in her hometown as "the girl with a great voice", Jenny never saw herself pursuing music as a career - believing it was vanity based. Coming from a family who had served, Jenny knew it was only a matter of time before she too would enlist. Her friends and family were shocked, as Jenny was a varsity cheerleader and shy in personality. Jenny proved them all wrong and went on to serve four years with one tour in the Middle East. During her deployment, her father shipped her a 6 string Takamine acoustic guitar. Jenny began entertaining her fellow squad members and they encouraged her to pursue a country music career after hearing her songwriting and a voice that moved them to tears. After being gone for over a year, Jenny felt the stress of the deployment and experienced a therapeutic effect from songwriting. She also saw the healing effect her voice and songs had on other soldiers she worked with. It was then that Jenny found her true calling - songwriting. Finally listening to her heart, Jenny moved to Nashville in 2018 and recorded her self-written and self funded EP with Grammy award winning producer Jamie Tate of The Rukkus Room. That EP followed with a music video filmed in Hollywood, CA for the catchy song, "Driving with the Top Down" and an invite to the Grand 'Ole Opry radio station WSM Today in Nashville for a live on-air performance. Later in 2019, Jenny also performed at the Nashville VA and other various Yellow Ribbon events around the country inspiring other veterans with her drive and resilience. Since her release of the summer bop, Jenny has signed with a busy booking agency and toured all over the East Coast at festivals and theaters playing over 30 shows in 2020 and 2021 despite the pandemic. Jenny's vocals have been lauded by audiences and industry professionals as "huge and soar ing" and her songwriting as "authentic, clever, and from the heart". The end of 2021 saw the release of "Lights of Our Hometown" with UK artist Danny McMahon and has streamed over 10,000 plays since its release on October 22. Fans of Jenny Grace are hungry for more music in 2022 and can expect more releases as she has been recognized as a force in the industry and determined to break barriers in the genre.
In this podcast we get to know Hayley, where she came from what she studied and her secrets to her success and how she manages to keep going and coming up with such amazing music. She talks about her new single Karma and her album which is out on the 22nd of October and you can pre-order on her website HERE Hayley Jensen is an artist whose vocal abilities place her in elite company within the industry. Bursting onto the scene in 2004 as a Top 4 finalist on Australian Idol, Hayley has performed for Coalition Forces in the Middle East, won a MusicOz Award, and was mentored by Kylie Minogue on The Voice Australia, who described her as 'the whole package'. Her 'blind audition' has received close to 2M views on YouTube. ‘Past Tense and Present Peace' was Jensen's first iTunes #1 album & her hard work was rewarded with a Aus. Indie Country Music Award and Top 5 finalist spot at the 2018 Country Music Channel (CM) Awards. Hayley signed with Social Family Records to release her album 'Turning Up The Dial', produced in Nashville USA with Grammy & Emmy Award winning producer, Jamie Tate. It debuted as the 3rd highest selling Australian Country Album (ARIA), #2 iTunes Country album. Over the past two years Hayley has toured nationally & internationally, performing at Buckle & Boots Festival in the UK (‘Summertime Soundtrack' dubbed the festival soundtrack), Calgary Stampede & Dauphins CountryFest, in Canada in 2019. Hayley became a household name in her homeland after placing 4th on Australian Idol & later, on The Voice Australia. In 2018, Jensen signed with Social Family Records to release her ARIA #3 Australian Country Album, 'Turning Up The Dial' produced in Nashville by Grammy Award winning producer, Jamie Tate, featuring festival hits 'Summertime Soundtrack', 'Saturday Night' & 'Next Big Thing'. The same year, Hayley was invited to the UK to perform at Buckle & Boots Country Festival & was a finalist in the 2018 CMC Awards. She has also won an Australian Independent Country Music Award. 2019 saw Jensen tour Canada, performing at Calgary Stampede, Alberta and Dauphin's CountryFest, Manitoba - the only Australian artist on both official line ups. Whilst there, she collaborated extensively with Canadian artists and writers (including Jason McCoy & Clayton Bellamy of The Roadhammers, Dan Davidson, Troy Kokol), and has since begun work on her 4th studio album with Calgary based indigenous producer, Troy Kokol at Reluctant Cowboy Music. The first track to be released from the forthcoming album set new career highs for Jensen both in Australia and abroad. 'Breakin Hearts’, a swampy modern country song, debuted at #1 on iTunes and was the #1 Australian song at country radio according to The Music Network (TMN) Airplay Charts. It was also added to Spotify's curated 'Fresh Country' playlist. Abroad, it cracked the Canadian Country Top 100 radio charts and was the #32 most played song on CBC Music on SiriusXM across North America. The track was accompanied by a unique, animated Wild West themed music video that tells the story of a heart-breaker outlaw who meets his match in a sassy female cowgirl. Scripted by Jensen, the video premiered exclusively on CMT, was featured in their Top 100 videos for 2020, and has accumulated 75k+ views online Hot on the heels of the success of Breakin’ Hearts’, Jensen released a power pop-country bop, ‘Fireworks’ to Australian Country radio. Penned over Skype during lockdown with Aussie friend, expat and Billboard Country #1 songwriter, Phil Barton and partner, Dana Heaton-Perdue, the song once again featured the stellar, soaring powerhouse vocals we have come to expect from Jensen. The music video featured home videos of her fans, sharing sparklers with their loved ones. Released November last year continues to climb the charts and is currently one of the Top 20 Australian country tracks at radio. ‘Just Gonna Party’ is the third single to be released ahead of Hayley’s forthcoming album. It’s an upbeat, refreshing song that somehow manages to address the current worries of the world with a positive spin. The accompanying music video is an ‘out of this world’ animation by former Hanna Barbera animator, Reggie Entienza. Produced & scripted by Jensen, it is sure to take you on an adventure! ‘Just Gonna Party’ was co-written with award winning Canadian writers Troy Kokol and Chris O’Neil and produced by Troy at Reluctant Cowboy Records - the same team that brought us ‘Breakin’ Hearts’ & ‘Fireworks’ last year. THIS WEEKS LOCAL SPOTLIGHT...Shines on none other then Warner Music's own, David Boyd Janes!Jackie chats with David about his career, working with a major record label, his brand new single "Couldn't Hurt", and what's next for this rising country star."A Toronto, Ontario native, David Boyd Janes is being recognized as one of country music's most promising new artists – and he owes everything he has accomplished so far to the decision he made two years ago of quitting his job to focus on music fulltime. The valiant move paid off quickly; 2019 was a monstrous year for the budding country star.“I truly feel like I'm stuck in the greatest dream I've ever had and I hope I never wake up,” says David. “I have no idea what's around the corner but I'm really excited to greet it and embrace it all.”He emerged out of 100 artists to win The Next Country Music Star contest put on by the Havelock Country Jamboree, and was named Artist of the Year at the Mississauga Music Awards. Another win at the Country Wild Music Festival in Cobourg, Ontario, earned David a trip to Nashville to record a song with Grammy-winner Jamie Tate. Before David even released the song – Ready For A Good Time – Montana's restaurant chain chose it to be featured in their advertisements airing nationwide on both tv and radio. After winning the Boots & Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase, he not only got the opportunity to perform in front of 25,000 country fans on the final night of the festival, but with the win came a single release contract through Warner Music Canada. The song - Couldn't Hurt - was written with country superstar James Barker, fellow CMAOntario Award nominee Aaron Alan and industry veteran Joe Ernewein. 2020 has also seen David earn his first CMAOntario Award nomination in the Rising Star category, and while plans for a robust tour had to be put on hold, next year is shaping up to be his busiest yet."Check him out online at: https://www.davidboydjanes.com/Stream live: https://streamdb8web.securenetsystems.net/cirrusencore/CHLP

With the pandemic now upon us, those impacts have been accelerated as both large and small retail destinations struggle to survive and adapt to the new world of physical distancing. On May 29th, 2020, Jeremy interviewed Jamie Tate, founder and president of Tate Economic Research, to talk about the pandemic’s impacts on the retail market and the ways in which the industry is responding.
