This week on Unlocked, Savannah sits down with Matt and Scott Thomas of Parmalee for a conversation that goes far beyond the music. From growing up in a small North Carolina town to spending more than a decade chasing a dream before landing their first No. 1 hit, the brothers open up about the long road to success, the sacrifices their family made along the way, and the moments that nearly changed everything. They share the incredible story behind "Carolina," the second mortgage their mother took out to keep the band going, and why finally making it wasn't just their victory, but their family's too.The conversation also dives into one of the darkest chapters of Parmalee's journey, when a violent robbery and shooting nearly ended the band's story before it truly began. Matt and Scott reflect on survival, faith, trauma, therapy, and how that experience continues to shape their perspective on life, music, and success today.Of course, there are plenty of lighter moments too, including the story behind "Take My Name," crashing a fan's wedding, the inspiration for their newest music, and why they're determined to enjoy the ride more than ever after everything they've been through. This episode is a reminder that sometimes the biggest breakthroughs come after the longest battles, and that the road to success is rarely as simple as it looks from the outside.Thank you to our sponsors for supporting our show!- Quince: Step into the holiday season with layers made to feel good, look polished, and last—with Quince. From the Patriot Mobile studio powered by E|Spaces, the guys dive into a packed episode of Try That In A Small Town. They kick things off by reacting to the latest ACM Award nominations: who belongs, who doesn't, and why politics still run the game. Entertainer, Group, Duo, New Artist, Album, Song, Single, and Musical Event of the Year all get the TTIAST treatment, with plenty of opinions on names like Morgan Wallen, Jason Aldean, Luke Combs, Jelly Roll, Cody Johnson, Megan Moroney, Chris Stapleton, Lainey Wilson, Alabama, Zac Brown Band, Parmalee, and more. Kelly shares a huge personal milestone: after interning for Reba's company back in the 90s, he finally lands his first Reba cut on a song written in 2005. That opens up a conversation about prayer, persistence, and whether Christians should pray about career and business. The guys revisit the backstory of “If I Didn't Love You” (Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood), from losing a duet slot to writing something ultra-specific on a deadline and watching it connect. In the fan-favorite Dip Shitty-its segment, they unload on Masters “pond jumpers,” public bathroom pee etiquette, clapping when servers drop dishes, trash in urinals, rental car abuse, and more everyday behaviors that drive them crazy. They close with a powerful Small Town Hero story from Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, where a principal charged an armed student, took a bullet, and likely saved lives. It's exactly the kind of “try that in a small town” courage the show was built to highlight. If you like country music, songwriting war stories, small town grit, and unfiltered opinions, this one delivers from front to back. Tonight's guest, Parmalee, has had a plethora of Bigfoot sightings. All of which happened within a 3-mile radius of her home. That's due, in large part, to the fact that for years, she had a clan of Sasquatch living across the road from her property. Parmalee had her first Bigfoot sighting, one night, in August of 2017. She was about 7 minutes from home, at the time, driving up a hill. There was a little convenience store at the top of the hill, on the right-hand side of the road. There was a fur tree standing next to the entrance of the convenience store's driveway. The store's parking lot was well-lit. The fur tree was something Parmalee was used to seeing. What was standing next to the tree wasn't.If you've had a Bigfoot sighting and would like to be a guest, on the show, please go to https://MyBigfootSighting.com and let us know. This week we're sharing a series of episodes that capture one of our favorite themes on Second Act Stories: the moment when life changes key. These Key Changes episodes feature people whose lives have been shaped by music: some who left it behind for something new; others who found their way to it later than expected. Together, they're the stories we return to when we want to show how reinvention really works, not as a clean break, but as a shift in rhythm, perspective, and purpose. Whether you're a longtime listener or just discovering the show, these episodes reflect the heart of the podcast: bold pivots, unexpected harmony, and second acts that still have plenty to say. Rick Beato is one of the most successful YouTube stars in the world. His channel, Everything Music, has 3.5 million subscribers and is approaching 600 million views. Among the different types of videos Rick posts are his Top 20 Countdowns, What Makes This Song Great?, and his Rants on all things music. Rick also has an incredible series of long-form, sit-down interviews with some of the most acclaimed music artists in the world, including Peter Frampton, Sting, Derek Trucks, Brian May, and a group interview with grunge legends Krist Novoselic, Kim Thayil and Jack Endino. But Rick didn't find success on YouTube until he was in his mid-50s, following the viral success of a video he posted of his 8-year-old son Dylan demonstrating his perfect pitch. In fact, he didn't even launch his channel until he was 54. Prior to his YouTube success, Rick taught music at the college level, he held private lessons (by his estimation, he taught more than 12,000 lessons), he was a music producer and engineer, and he even co-wrote the song "Carolina" by the band Parmalee, which hit #1 on the Billboard Country chart. Rick is also one of the only people in the world who isn't a rock star to have his own Gibson Artist Series Signature Les Paul Special guitars. In this episode, Rick shares his journey from childhood, when he first played the cello, to the classrooms of upstate New York, to his experience working in the music industry, to the incredible success he enjoys today as one of the world's most well-respected experts on "Everything Music." ******* If you enjoy Second Act Stories, please leave us a review here. What if the song that changes your life starts with a brief, a laugh, and a note you weren't sure you could sing? We sit down with songwriter Abram Dean and trace the unlikely trail from church costumes and a middle-school talent win to LA's genre-blend grind, a Warner publishing deal, and a move to Nashville that felt less like strategy and more like calling. We unpack the room where “Gonna Love You” took shape for Parmalee—a “power ballad” request that turned into a simple, soaring promise, a months-long hunt for the right bridge, and a cut day that proved how the right voice can unlock a song. Abram shares how that track later became a conduit for the band to tell a painful family story, showing how country songs carry more than romance—they hold resilience. Then we pivot to “Devil Don't Go There,” where a stubborn idea flipped POV, landed with Laney Wilson, and raced from Friday write to Monday cut under Jay Joyce. The hook is sharp, but the lesson is sharper: trust your co-writers and write the truth the artist can live. The ride doesn't smooth out from there. Abram talks turkey hunts that led to Dylan Marlowe's “Record High,” an Andy Grammer session that turned into his first major cut with “Red Eye,” and the wild “My Side of Town” saga—instant holds, a Morgan Wallen cut that missed the final tracklist, and a rebirth with Josh Ross. Along the way, we get field-tested advice for new writers: show up to writer rounds, know your role in the room, let simple ideas breathe, and don't force doors that won't open.If you love the craft behind country hits, co-writing dynamics, and real talk about the highs and gut-punches of modern songwriting, this one's for you. Subscribe, share with a songwriter friend, and leave a review to help more listeners find the show. What part of Abram's journey hit you hardest?

Parmalee’s resilience is one of the most inspiring aspects of their journey. From the early days of playing music as kids with their dad to becoming one of country music’s most successful bands, they’ve faced countless challenges—but they never gave up. They’ve had their fair share of struggles, whether it’s overcoming internal band conflicts, navigating the pressures of the music industry, or literally surviving a robbery and gunshot, they always always push forward together. Parmalee’s story is a testament to their unwavering determination and the power of brotherhood, and it’s that resilience and conviction that has helped them connect with fans all over the world.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We've got a TLR favorite on this week's episode of Stories Behind the Songs - Adam Craig! Adam has so many impressive cuts like “Church Pew or Bar Stool” by Jason Aldean, “Close Your Eyes” by Parmalee, and George Strait's 2024 single from his upcoming album, “MIA Down In MIA”. We dive into those songs as well as the story behind his unreleased Cody Johnson cut written with Jordan Walker and Matt Rogers that will be on Cody's next album. Adam also talks about his past publishing and record deals, moving to Nashville to be an artist, playing the Opry stage, writing for a “viral moment”, and trying to impress the songwriting icon, Dean Dillon. We also get a verse/chorus of “Church Pew and Barstool” and “MIA Down In MIA”. Adam is a good friend of mine and a regular on our stage, and I'm so glad we got the opportunity to dig deeper into his story and career and, of course, his songs!
