Last week, country music lost one of its most iconic stars. Over the course of several decades, Toby Keith's perfectly deep, rich voice belted out 42 songs that became top-10 on the Billboard Country chart. While many of those songs were about bars, or girls, or his love for his country, it is one of his most gentile songs that remains not only one of my favorite songs, but an anthem we should try to live out loud throughout our lives. And the backstory of the song is as inspiring as the song itself.

E54 - Tyler Hubbard is Dancing in the Country with his 5 Foot 9 Wife and Family as a Solo Artist As the Georgia half of Florida Georgia Line, Tyler Hubbard spearheaded the shiny, good-time sound of bro-country in the 2010s, singing such era-defining hits as "Cruise," "Get Your Shine On," and "This Is How We Roll." Once he split with Brian Kelley in the early 2020s, Hubbard continued the legacy of FGL as a solo artist, modernizing their signature sunny sound on the 2022 number one hit "5 Foot 9," which was the first single pulled from his inaugural EP Dancin' in the Country. His eponymous full-length debut arrived the following year. A native of Monroe, Georgia, Hubbard attended college at Belmont University in Nashville, where he met Florida-born singer/songwriter Brian Kelley in a campus worship group. The pair eventually parlayed their friendship into a successful music career under the banner Florida Georgia Line. Emerging in 2010, the duo found mainstream success two years later with the release of their debut single, "Cruise," which became the first country song ever to receive diamond certification from the RIAA. The wide-ranging Grammy Award winners spent the rest of the decade at the forefront of the country-pop scene, releasing gold- and platinum-selling efforts like Here's to the Good Times, Anything Goes, and Dig Your Roots. In 2021, Hubbard and Kelley announced that they would be embarking on dual solo careers while remaining part of Florida Georgia Line. Hubbard's collaborations with Tim McGraw ("Undivided") and rapper Lathan Warlick ("My Way") appeared later that year. In early 2022, he signed with EMI Nashville and began work on his debut album, which embraced both his country and Christian roots, and saw him working with a host of regional hitmakers, including Ross Copperman, Keith Urban, and Thomas Rhett. "5 Foot 9," the first single from the sessions, appeared later that June, eventually climbing to number four on Billboard's Country Airplay charts. Hubbard followed the hit with Dancin' in the Country, his debut solo EP, in August. The set provided the seeds of Tyler Hubbard, the eponymous full-length debut that appeared in January 2023 and reached the upper echelons of the Billboard Country charts. If finding common ground sounds like an ambitious prospect in these profoundly polarized times, that's because, quite frankly, it is. But with his extraordinary new album, The United State, Wells has managed to transcend politics and race and religion and tap into something far deeper, something infinitely more primal and timeless. Recorded with acclaimed producer Duane Lundy (Ringo Starr, Sturgill Simpson's Sunday Valley, Joe Pug), the collection explores our innate humanity and everything that comes with it: the joy, the sorrow, the ecstasy, the pain, the hope, the fear. Wells' songs speak to the universal truths that bind us, empathetically leaping between perspectives as they reckon with personal growth and existential quandaries. The arrangements here are rich and ethereal to match, balancing lush sonic landscapes with stark acoustic meditations. The result is a subtly revelatory record, a gripping, cinematic album full of small moments and sharp insights that add up to nothing short of life itself. “Ultimately, this album's about unity,” says Wells. “It's about the common thread that connects us all.” After spending his childhood in Blanchard, LA, Wells moved with his family to Cynthiana, Kentucky as a youngster. Growing up in the rural South, he rebelled against the commercial country music that surrounded him, instead preferring the trippy psychedelia of Pink Floyd and the brash energy of Guns N' Roses. After an aimless couple of years trying to put a band together in rural Kentucky, he moved to Lexington, and immediately launched the cult favorite Southern rock band Fifth on the Floor. The group released a couple of well-received independent records before teaming up with Shooter Jennings on their breakout third album, 2013's Ashes & Angels, which debuted on the Billboard Country charts. While the record earned raves and helped land the band dates with the likes of Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, and Blackberry Smoke, it would prove to be the group's last, and following a pair of hometown farewell shows, the four-piece split for good. “When that band broke up, it kicked me in the teeth. We'd spent years clawing upward, and suddenly there was no wind, no sails,” says Wells. “That had been my dream since I was a teenager, and all of my eggs were in that basket. There was no backup plan.”  With the rug suddenly pulled out from under him, Wells found himself in freefall. Rather than succumb to the disappointment, though, he decided to write his way through the heartache, emerging stronger and more creatively invigorated on the other side with his solo debut, Dawn in the Distance. The record (and its subsequent touring) prompted the best reviews of Wells' career, with Rolling Stone hailing his “gift for melody” and Saving Country Music praising his “stunning insight and honesty.” The album reached #3 on Amazon's Alt-Country/Americana chart, and songs from the collection racked up more than a million streams on Spotify alone.  When it came time to work on a follow-up, Wells decided to flip his entire writing process on its head. Instead of penning whatever music just happened to come to mind, he crafted an entire architecture and sequence for the record in advance, following it like a road map as he wrote about what it meant to be human, to be caring, to love yourself and your fellow man, flaws and all. “Tribalism is the name of the game at this point,” says Wells. “‘Divided' is a cliche. But if you zoom out, we all bleed the same, we all laugh the same, we all cry the same. There's this common path that all of our lives follow: birth, being a dumbass kid, thinking you're falling in love, actually falling in love, starting a family. Worrying about paying the bills, death, whatever comes next. This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

James has become a fixture on the Billboard Country chart with thirteen #1 songs and scores of top 20 singles to his credit. In 2009, Brett achieved the Music Row “Triple Play,” an award for three #1 songs in a single chart year, not once, but twice! These six #1‘s; ‘It's America,' by Rodney Atkins, ‘Out Last Night,' by Kenny Chesney, ‘Cowboy Cassanova,' by Carrie Underwood, ‘Summer Nights,' by Rascal Flatts, ‘The Truth' by Jason Aldean, and ‘The Man I Want To Be' Chris Young earned James ASCAP Songwriter of the Year for the second time in October 2010.A native of Oklahoma City, Brett attended Baylor University, where he completed two years of medical school before moving to Nashville to pursue his dream of becoming a country star. In 1995, Brett James was signed to the Arista subsidiary Career Records and subsequently released his self-titled debut album. Career Records was later dissolved in consolidation, and with it, James's recording artist aspirations. Brett persevered as a writer at Patrick Joseph Publishing which fostered the relationships that destined him for success. In the year 2000, James received his first major album cut with the song ‘Love Is A Sweet Thing,' recorded by Faith Hill, followed by a top 20 single ‘You Won't Be Lonely Now,' with Billy Ray Cyrus. It wasn't long before Brett reached the benchmark that all songwriters and artists alike strive for, the coveted #1 song. In April of 2001, then-break-out artist Jessica Andrews landed James his first #1 with the song ‘Who I Am.' He returned to the top of the chart in 2002, this time with country superstar Martina McBride and the song ‘Blessed.'As his chart success continued, Brett appeared on Billboard Magazine's top-ten country songwriters list for five consecutive years, the only writer to do so, and in 2006 reached yet another musical milestone winning ASCAP Songwriter of the Year. In 2007, Brett received the music industry's highest honor winning the Grammy Award for Best Country Song ‘Jesus Take The Wheel,' recorded by Carrie Underwood. The list of artists that have recorded songs penned by Brett James resembles a who's who in the country music list but also straddles genre lines into American and world pop music. Some notable pop artists to record James' songs include Kelly Clarkson, Jon Bon Jovi, Daughtry, The Backstreet Boys, Chicago, and Leona Lewis. Brett has also scored #1 songs in Europe and a worldwide top 5 Latin hit with the song ‘Todo Mi Amor' recorded by Paulina Rubio. Outside the writer's room, Brett's talents have earned production credits that include Taylor Swift, Jessica Simpson, Josh Gracin, and MCA recording artist Kip Moore whose single “Somethin' ‘Bout a Truck” was a breakthrough smash in 2012!https://www.facebook.com/BrettJamesSongswww.GaryScottThomas.com

Hayley became a household name in her homeland after placing 4th on Australian Idol & later, on The Voice Australia. In 2018, Jensen signed with Social Family Records to release her ARIA #3 Australian Country Album, 'Turning Up The Dial' produced in Nashville by Grammy Award winning producer, Jamie Tate, featuring festival hits 'Summertime Soundtrack', 'Saturday Night' & 'Next Big Thing'. The same year, Hayley was invited to the UK to perform at Buckle & Boots Country Festival & was a finalist in the 2018 CMC Awards. She has also won an Australian Independent Country Music Award. 2019 saw Jensen tour Canada, performing at Calgary Stampede, Alberta and Dauphin's CountryFest, Manitoba - the only Australian artist on both official line ups. Whilst there, she collaborated extensively with Canadian artists and writers (including Jason McCoy & Clayton Bellamy of The Roadhammers, Dan Davidson, Troy Kokol), and has since begun work on her 4th studio album with Calgary based indigenous producer, Troy Kokol at Reluctant Cowboy Music. The first track to be released from the forthcoming album set new career highs for Jensen both in Australia and abroad. 'Breakin Hearts’, a swampy modern country song, debuted at #1 on iTunes and was the #1 Australian song at country radio according to The Music Network (TMN) Airplay Charts. It was also added to Spotify's curated 'Fresh Country' playlist. Abroad, it cracked the Canadian Country Top 100 radio charts and was the #32 most played song on CBC Music on SiriusXM across North America. The track was accompanied by a unique, animated Wild West themed music video that tells the story of a heart-breaker outlaw who meets his match in a sassy female cowgirl. Scripted by Jensen, the video premiered exclusively on CMT, was featured in their Top 100 videos for 2020, and has accumulated 75k+ views online Hot on the heels of the success of Breakin’ Hearts’,  Jensen released a power pop-country bop, ‘Fireworks’  to Australian Country radio. Penned over Skype during lockdown with Aussie friend, expat and Billboard Country #1 songwriter, Phil Barton and partner, Dana Heaton-Perdue, the song once again featured the stellar, soaring powerhouse vocals we have come to expect from Jensen. The music video featured home videos of her fans, sharing sparklers with their loved ones. Released November last year continues to climb the charts and is currently one of the Top 20 Australian country tracks at radio. ‘Just Gonna Party’ is the third single to be released ahead of Hayley’s forthcoming album. It’s an upbeat, refreshing song that somehow manages to address the current worries of the world with a positive spin. The accompanying music video is an ‘out of this world’ animation by former Hanna Barbera animator, Reggie Entienza.  Produced & scripted by Jensen, it is sure to take you on an adventure! ‘Just Gonna Party’ was co-written with award winning Canadian writers Troy Kokol and Chris O’Neil and produced by Troy at Reluctant Cowboy Records - the same team that brought us ‘Breakin’ Hearts’ & ‘Fireworks’ last year. Inside The Newsroom with Daniel Levitt

Hello! And welcome to another edition of the Inside The Newsroom podcast newsletter, where I’ll dish further context and info about everything discussed in the podcast. If you enjoy what you read and listen to, please subscribe to get it straight to your inbox next time. Today’s guests are…… storm chaser Josh Morgerman and filmmaker Caroline Menzies of the new TV show Hurricane Man, currently airing in the UK and South Africa (random) and set to hit the US in the coming months. I loved this episode and Josh’s obsession with chasing storms was absolutely addictive and makes me (don’t worry I won’t) really want to tag along with him next time. Does climate change make hurricanes worse?Although it’s not central to the show, it’s impossible not to talk about hurricanes without talking about climate change. What you have to consider is the difference between meteorology and climatology — they’re different but closely related. Meteorology is the study of weather, most often on a day-to-day or event-by-event basis, so it’s hard to decipher if climate change is involved. Climatology is the study of weather trends over an extended period of time. In order to explore if climate change is making hurricanes worse, you have to look at long-term trends, which is (*shameful plug time*) what my colleague and I looked at for the Guardian last year.Niko Kommenda and Moi, The GuardianThe Category is Just a NumberWe most often hear about the ‘category’ of a hurricane, and the barometer of panic ascends or descends according to this number. But what causes significant damage is the rain these storms bring. Take Hurricane Harvey in 2017, which stalled and sat on top of Houston and its surrounding areas for multiple days. In total, Harvey dumped 33 trillion gallons of water, and the folks at the Washington Post visualized what that looked like at the link below. Angela Fritz and Jason Samenow, Washington PostWhy Don’t People Evacuate?Hurricanes bring out the best and worst of people. On one hand, so many incredible people offer to help those whose lives have been destroyed. Then there’s those who sit on the sidelines and lambast anyone who “chooses” not to evacuate. The fact is, not everyone can just get up and leave town for safety. Some are physically unable. Some are physically unable to move loved ones. And as you’ll see from the next blurb, some people just flat out cannot afford to leave their possessions that they rely on to make a living.Nicole Stephens, for the New York TimesLike Inside The Newsroom? I watched the below clip with anguish and a clenched butt. Long Road to RecoveryIf you watch the series or have ever seen the destruction of a hurricane, you'll know town's and cities don't recover overnight. My former colleagues at FiveThirtyEight visualized how long it took the victims in New York and New Jersey to recover from Hurricane Sandy (which actually made landfall as a tropical cyclone) and there are still people calling the authorities about the damage. I imagine it will take at least the next decade for the Florida Panhandle to fully recover from the impact of Hurricane Michael, which made landfall as a top-end Category 4 hurricane. Julia Wolfe and Oliver Order, FiveThirtyEightInside the EyeTime for another video. If you’re reading this and you’ve ever survived the strongest part of a hurricane — the ferocious ‘eye wall’ — you’ll know that on the other side is a mystical land where the sun shines and the birds tweet. That majestic place is called the ‘eye’, and in the below clip, we get to see Josh experience something he described as indescribable. I likened it to being on drugs.2019 Hurricane Season ForecastThe past two Atlantic hurricane seasons have been devastating with a total of 32 named storms, including eight major hurricanes (Category 3 or stronger). The good news is that the 2019 season is expected to be nearer the average of 12 named storms. The Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State releases its predictions each year and, while these are subject to change, the early signs are that 2019 will be calmer than the past couple of years.Jonathan Erdman, The Weather ChannelRelated Podcasts#23 — Michael E. After the label scored a hit video on BET and a charting single, Tim sold his interest and moved into the publishing world. In his first job as archive manager at Hamstein, he got his first cut and when it went to #14 on the Billboard Country chart he was promoted to Creative Director. He stayed with the company as it sold to Mosaic and then to Stage Three where he became General Manager. "In my 15 years living in Nashville, I have been fortunate to watch a lot of friends like Kip Moore, Brett Eldredge, Florida Georgia Line, A Thousand Horses, Michael Ray and more, start their journeys with a back pack and a dream and end up being a huge success in country music. Yet the most frustrating part about being a friend and a fan to not just artist, but writers like Corey Crowder, Justin Weaver, Rick Huckaby, Westin Davis and many more, has been hearing amazing songs that will never leave the Nashville city limits.Rob Blackledge was tired, uninspired and most of all unsure of himself. Newly engaged to the redhead of his dreams, his most recent record deal ended abruptly when the label closed down. With no label, no job and no money, he prepared to walk down the aisle. And then the phone rang.On the other end of the line was Rob’s friend Stephen Barker Liles of country music’s duo Love and Theft. He was calling to tell Rob that a song they had written over a year ago was going to be released as Love and Theft’s first single to country radio. The song, “Runaway”, spent 47 weeks on the Billboard Country charts topping out at #9 and opening the door to Rob’s next adventure. In 2011 Rob helped start the country band Blackjack Billy. For four years, they toured the States, Australia and Canada with their hit song, “The Booze Cruise”.But the story wasn’t over. By November 2015 Rob knew it was time to get back to his roots. Back to a single mic on an empty stage, where the only thing that matters is the voice and the song and the story. A story that changes and inspires and got him here in the first place.
