Pursuing a career in the arts or music is a journey filled with passion, creativity, and, often, immense challenges. It can feel like you're constantly pushing against a wall, struggling to be seen, heard, or valued in a crowded industry. The road to success is rarely a straight path—rejections, self-doubt, and setbacks can make even the most talented artists question whether to keep going. This happened to my friend Lonnie Park, now a Multi-Grammy® award winner. By leaning in to insurmountable challenges rather than retreating from them after being catapulted over the top of a quad vehicle, he took a huge step to mentally break through those setbacks. In this episode, we'll explore how embracing obstacles, staying adaptable, and refining your craft with strategic goals and relationships can transform hopelessness into potential success. (First aired on WUTC 6/10/23)The Shindellas are a band formed under the belief that when women come together, powerful change can happen. They are advocates aligned under the tenets of sisterhood, excellence, elegance, and empowerment.Since hitting the scene back in 2017, The Shindellas, (Kasi Jones, Stacy Johnson, and Tamara Chauniece), who hails from the music city of Nashville, has been on a mission to impact music with their unique sound and style. Hand-picked by Multi-Grammy-nominated production and songwriting duo Chuck Harmony & Claude Kelly (Rihanna, Miley, Jazmine Sullivan, Ledisi, Fantasia, and more), The Shindellas were fueled by the opportunity to make music that would not only matter to them but ring true to the listeners. As a result, the ladies tapped into retro sounds of R&B/Soul influences to bring forth a sound they dubbed as ‘New American Soul' with hints of The Clark Sisters, EnVogue, The Pointer Sisters, and LaBelle. Effortlessly displayed, they not only evoke emotion through harmony but the beauty of music is evident on their recently released debut album HITS THAT STICK LIKE GRITS via Weirdo Workshop/The Orchard. The 14-track album showcases each voice that blends to sound like one. The album's lead single "Money" remains a fan favorite. Other releases featured on the album include "Fear Has No Place," and "When You Are Lonely." Celebrity fans include names like Beyonce, Missy Elliott, and Anita Baker. Last year, they made history as the first R&B band to perform at the 2021 CMT Awards, and performed on the 2021 “CMA Country Christmas.” The Shindellas have been featured on NPR, appeared at the ESSENCE Festival of Culture, performed at the TEDxNashville Women, and more. The Shindellas, at their core, are pitch-perfect. Their tone is penetratingly beautiful. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

I take nothing with me. I tell all my secrets.Queen Sheba is the poet who founded Poetry vs. Hip-Hop Live! and its associated foundation to support LGBTQ women navigating a cancer diagnosis. We connected as guests in a delegation of social impact creators invited to Israel by its Foreign Ministry.I'm glad we did. She is doing inspiring work I may not ever have discovered otherwise.AI Summary* Sheba founded Poetry versus Hip Hop, a social impact platform that aims to bridge cultural gaps and dissolve stereotypes.* The platform disguises itself as a stage show, but the team also reaches out to people from different backgrounds and cultures.* Human connection is essential, especially since people often misjudge and misunderstand each other.* Her personal and professional journey in poetry and spoken word began with experiences of growing up in Detroit and being adopted by a white family.* Her work has evolved to cover a range of social and political issues.* She emphasizes the importance of offering solutions in her work and teaching her students to do the same.* Her superpower is taking risks with her writing and leaving everything on the paper or stage.* She advises allowing oneself time to grieve and be sad but to show up for life and take risks.* Start small and gradually build up to bigger risks, and find a supportive community to share work with.* Her books and albums can be found on Amazon, and information on her upcoming performances can be found on her website and social media.Poetry vs. Hip-Hop Live!“Poetry vs. Hip-Hop is a social impact platform disguised as a stage show,” Sheba says. The performances are merely the context for bringing people together from across sometimes antagonistic divides. She says:We purposely reach out to people that are from all walks of life, including but not limited to any race, color, creed, LGBTQIA community—anything at all—so that we can bridge these gaps and start conversations with people to help dissolve stereotypes, to help people understand different cultures, to maybe introduce them to cultures they have never seen or talked to before or worked with before.Demonstrating the impact, she shares the story of an event in Texas where two antagonistic hip-hop gang rivals were invited to perform. They were reluctant to even share the stage with one another.Sheba says:We had to sit down and say, “Hey, this is the perfect opportunity to say, ‘Hey, we're not the stereotype that you think that we are. We're not these gangsters. We're not we're not these thugs. We're writers and creatives and thought leaders and thinkers and social activists. Come over and meet my crew over here.'” We were able to dissolve that a little bit and get at least one from each crew to come.Sheba's work is an extension of who she is. “I'm adopted. I'm adopted by white people. I grew up in a major city. I present Black, but I'm biracial. I'm also part of the LGBTQIA community. So, I have all of these facets and umbrellas that are amazing.”“I get misread and misunderstood a lot of times,” in part as a result of the intersectionality of who she is. Appreciating that she is often misunderstood, she could see how others are treated similarly and wanted to help improve mutual understanding. In the on-stage “battle” between a hip-hop artist and a poet, Sheba requires the participants to hug “so that there is a human connection.”Sheba launched the foundation after her partner passed away in January 2022.In all her work, she builds on her superpower of taking risks with her poetry, in an effort to be authentic and share something meaningful.Superpowers for Good is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. How to Develop Risk-Taking In Your Writing As a SuperpowerTo help us understand how she uses her risk-taking in her poetry, she describes a poem she's working on now, called “New Booty,” inspired by her recent plastic surgery. She says:It's going to start off a little light and funny, but then I'm going to go left to social-political and say, “Well, now that I have a new booty, maybe I'll be considered black. Maybe I'll be less of [a target for] the microaggression to the mixed girl. Maybe I won't be called white anymore.” Because those are things that I struggle with; those are the things that come up in my life, in my adult life.“My superpower is taking a risk writing, writing to the edge, and then going over it,” Sheba says. She shared a story that highlights the good that can come from risk-taking in poetry and in life. It happens to explain how we met.I gave myself all of ‘22 to be depressed. Not that I'm still not processing the grief or the things that I went through, but I gave myself all of ‘22 to eat, sleep, not do anything, not do anything. If I had to go to work, I told myself I had to go to work. I went to work. If I had a gig, I would show up for the gig. If I had a responsibility to show up. But then I gave myself permission to immediately go home and get in bed.I literally spent—can you imagine the amazing summer in Atlanta, Georgia, in bed? July 4th in bed. Labor Day weekend in bed. Just not doing anything. So, I did not want to commit suicide. I was just tired, and I was exhausted. I told myself, “Do not commit suicide. Just keep showing up for your life. Just keep going. Just wake up and go to the next day and go to the next day.”Labor Day weekend, I was invited last minute to come perform at the mayor's LGBT opening reception for Black Pride weekend.Of course, I accepted the gig. I said, “You know what? Let's go all out.” I got a dress made. I had my friend design a dress for me. I was really honored to be a part of this. I show up, I perform “We Are the Women.” That was the only poem they commissioned me to do. I performed that in front of at least a thousand people. We were in City Hall. This has never been done before. We were in City Hall! A thousand people sitting and standing around from the LGBTQIA community. Elected officials, anybody you could think of, was there. I end the poem to a standing ovation.I was very excited that I decided to get up and take that gig that day. That is where I run into the Israeli consul general, and that is how I ended up meeting you.As we talked, I asked Sheba how to take risks safely. She says you can't. That's the point. As a creator, “You're going to be judged. You can't avoid it,” she says.“You only have one go. So, do what you're going to do every single day and do it big, bold,” Sheba says.“You only have one go. There is no putting it off,” she says, reiterating her point. “There's no putting it off, so take the risk.”Sheba shared a final note. Noting that she has lots of tattoos, she described one she has on her wrist that says, “Not Today.” She got it when she was working as a substitute teacher and saw an influx of middle-school suicides.“As adults, we know that we're just taller children,” she says. “So, I tell people, allow yourself time to grieve and be sad, but show up for your life. Because if you don't, you never know what could unfold positively.”If you follow Sheba's advice and example, you can make risk-taking in your creative work a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.SuperCrowd23Sheba has graciously agreed to perform at SuperCrowd23, which will be held on May 10 and 11. Multi Grammy-winning Jazz keyboardist, arranger, and record producer, Bob James, joins Talib Kweli at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City to talk about his legacy as the most sampled man in hip-hop. James also shares stories about cutting records with legends like Chet Baker and Quincy Jones and offers his thoughts on some of the most memorable sample flips of his work. As always, Premiere Networks, in conjunction with NBC, brings you interviews with the contestants and winners season after season! The Voice is one of America's most popular shows, airing Mondays and Tuesdays. ABOUT THE VOICE The four-time Emmy Award-winning musical competition series "The Voice" has returned with the strongest vocalists from across the country invited to compete in the show's newest season. Multi-Grammy-nominated Cuban-born singer-songwriter and actress Camila Cabello claims her red chair alongside superstar returning coaches John Legend, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani. Carson Daly returns as host for Season 22. The show's innovative format features four stages of competition: Blind Auditions, Battle Rounds, Knockouts and Live Performance Shows. During the Blind Auditions, the decisions from the coaches are based solely on voice and not looks. The coaches hear the artists perform but they don't get to see them, thanks to rotating chairs. If a coach is impressed by the artist's voice, they push a button to select the artist for their team. At this point, the coach's chair will swivel so that they can face the artist they selected. If more than one coach pushes the button, the power then shifts to the artist to choose which coach they want to work with. If no one pushes their button, the artist is eliminated from the competition. In addition to performing in front of a fully vaccinated, limited-capacity live audience, the artists' family and friends are able to attend their Blind Auditions in person for the first time since Season 18! Also returning this season is the block, which adds another layer of coach competition during the Blind Auditions. The coach chairs each have an extra set of buttons with the other three coaches' names on them, which prevents a coach from adding a new artist to his or her team. The coaches can only use their block buttons on one artist for the entire first round of the competition. The blocked coach only discovers they are blocked if they press their button, and though their chair will still turn, their lane lights up with "BLOCKED." If the coach doesn't press their button, the block is still available for another audition. Once the teams are set, the battle is on. The coaches dedicate themselves to developing their team of artists, giving them advice and sharing the secrets of their success, along with help from their celebrity advisors. The coaches enlist music industry heavyweights to prepare their artists for the Battle Rounds. This season's Battle Advisors include Charlie Puth (Team Camila), Jazmine Sullivan (Team Legend), Jimmie Allen (Team Blake) and Sean Paul (Team Gwen). During the Battle Rounds, the coaches will pit two of their own team members against each other to sing the same song together. The artists are vying for their coach's confidence and decision to take them to the next round. After each vocal battle, the coach must choose which of his or her artists will advance to the next round of competition. Each coach will have one save and one steal in the Battle Rounds. The losing artist is available to be saved by their own coach, but with the steals still in play, the artist could potentially choose to go with a different coach, leading to even tougher decisions for the coaches and artists. Artists who won their battle, were saved by their own coach or were stolen by another coach will advance to the Knockouts. Season 22 will showcase a new format element during the Knockout Rounds. For the first time ever, this phase of the competition will include three-way knockouts. The stakes have never been higher for the coaches and their artists as they vie for the win. In the Knockouts, the artists will be paired against two other teammates, but this time, they will select their own songs to perform individually while their direct competitors watch and wait. The coaches will choose the winner, and the artists not selected will be available to be stolen by another coach. The pressure is on as each coach will only have one steal in the Knockouts. In lieu of enlisting a Mega Mentor, the coaches will work with their artists directly to prepare them as best as possible for this new challenge. Once the Live Performance Shows begin, the top artists will compete against each other weekly during a live broadcast. This time, the television audience will vote to save their favorite artists. The artists with the lowest number of votes will be eligible for the Instant Save and will each perform a new song to prove why they should continue in the competition. America will then have the opportunity to save their favorite performer by voting on The Voice Official App or NBC.com. Those with the lowest number of votes will be sent home. In the end, one artist will be named "The Voice" and will receive the grand prize of a recording contract. "The Voice" is a presentation of MGM Television, Warner Bros. Unscripted Television in association with Warner Horizon and ITV Studios The Voice USA, Inc. The series was created by John de Mol, who serves as an executive producer along with Mark Burnett, Audrey Morrissey, Amanda Zucker, Kyra Thompson and Adam H. Sher.

Thrilled to have my good friend, colleague and fellow Multi-Grammy® nominee Will Clipman on Musitations™ for the kick off of season 2! I have admired Will and his profound work in world music and percussion for more than 3 decades! It is such an honor and treat to have him on the show. Little did I know we had so much in common; both being published poets, devoted world music multi-instrumentalists and most importantly survivors of a near death experience - which is how we connected while collaborating on a project for the IANDS (International Association of Near Death Experiences) conference last year. We immediately connected and began discussing doing an episode on Musitations™ together which is now live! We discuss the meaning of mythopoetic, conscious creativity and the importance of having "serious fun" when creating - as well as the importance of listening, stillness and silence. Here is a bit more about Will: Will Clipman is a poet, percussionist, performing and recording artist, maskmaker, storyteller and educator. He has been nominated for seven GRAMMY® Awards, including one for his solo world music album Pathfinder, and his pan-global instrumental palette is featured in his Planet of Percussion® workshop and performance. Will has recorded over seventy albums, including thirty-five for Canyon Records, the world's foremost producer of Native American music. Will's poetry is widely published, including his book Dog Light (Wesleyan University Press). His masks and mythopoetic storytelling are showcased in his workshop and performance Myths & Masks®, which is available as a DVD. Will has conducted over three hundred artist-in-residence programs for elementary, middle and high schools, colleges and universities, senior centers, adult and juvenile prisons, hospitals, libraries, resorts and retreat centers. His work as an educator has been recognized with an Arizona Commission on the Arts Decade of Distinguished Service Award and three Governor's Arts Awards nominations. Will has toured throughout the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as in Germany, Canada, Morocco and Russia. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Syracuse University and a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Arizona. This show is being brought to you by www.gubbarum.com Kelsie Kimberlin is a 22-year-old American musician and singer. Her work is not only accessible and entertaining but also steeped with important social themes and dual meanings underscoring her deep understanding of the power of creative music to evoke change. From an early age, Kelsie immersed herself in music, singing in choirs, participating in Yoko Ono's Peace Project, and spending much of her childhood in music studios working on an endless stream of original songs. She participates in every aspect of her art -- writing, recording, performing, and filming her videos. “Right now, the world is going through cataclysmic and historic changes that are affecting every person on the planet. How we respond to them will determine the fate of life on earth for future generations. I want to use my music to shine light on some of these issues and give people hope that together we can unite in our humanity for the common good." Multi-Grammy winner Michael Brauer, who has been working with Kelsie since January, recently said, "I really enjoy mixing Kelsie's music! Her voice is beautiful, emotional and I believe the story she's singing about. The musicianship and productions are amazing too. I expect her to go all the way, she's the real deal." When COVID hit, famed music legend Danny Goldberg urged Kelsie to start releasing her music during the pandemic, and, following the release of “Masterpiece,” sent her an autographed copy of his new book, “Serving the Servant,” about his relationship with Kurt Cobain, congratulating her for her incredible work.
