"Going Pop" can mean many different things where jazz musicians are concerned, from adding electricity (dang it, Miles, why you do that?), to covering pop songs, to actually experimenting with writing pop songs (not too many take this path and few emerge unscathed). And then there's rare jazzer combining jazz and pop songs, as you'll soon find out. This time out we look at approaches all over the spectrum, ending with a vocal album Mike has already pegged as an album of the year contender. Cecile McLoren – GHOST SONG; John Pizzarelli – DOUBLE EXPOSURE; Reuben Wilson – LOVE BUG; Bill O'Connell – A CHANGE IS GONNA COME.

This story is available in both collections of Hurston's short stories An exploration of writing style by Hurston This short story is similar to "Book of Harlem" in its writing style. In both of these stories, Hurston uses a structure and voice that is similar to old testament texts. From the numbered paragraphs to the use of third person, these stories take on the same voice you would hear if someone read the old testament to you. I can almost imagine a preacher reading this story as a preface to their sermon. I even hear the Amen when the story concludes. A migration story Now that I am almost at the halfway point in through this journey, I see a consistent story that Hurston likes to capture. The life of black people who migrated from the south to New York is often included in these stories. Sometimes it is a back story and in the case of this story, it is the main story. All in all, this story tells about the adventures of Jazzbo. He leaves his life in Waycross, Georgia and heads to Harlem. He learns the ways of the people of Harlem. From his clothes to his skills at talking sweet things to women, Jazzbo eventually gains a style that wins him his lady love and a life in Harlem. Compared to "Book of Harlem" I think this story was less intriguing. It may be that I had experience with the format from "Book of Harlem" but I think the story in "The Book of Harlem" is a little less interesting. Both stories are intriguing in their writing style and I think in the hands of a gifted performer, they would be interesting to hear performed. Overall - I continue to be impressed by the depth and skill of Hurston's writing. You can follow me on this journey by going to www.ifoundthisgreatbook.com/zora
In this week's episode – the last of 2019 – Mark, Barney & "Jazzbo" see out the year by celebrating the sheer majesty of Aretha Franklin and the posthumously-released Amazing Grace documentary. Featured writer Tom Cox provides the perfect segue: a 1999 piece about the Queen Of Soul and her Atlantic Records producer/mentor Jerry Wexler. Your hosts also enjoy a chuckle as they revisit Tom's 2004 piece on Apple's new GarageBand "workstation". Attention then turns to a 2007 audio interview with uptown funkateer and retromaniac producer Mark Ronson. We hear a clip from Maureen Paton's back-of-a-cab conversation with Ronson, after which RBP's three amigos discuss his subsequent career and his work with Amy Winehouse. Marks talks us through new additions to the RBP library, including Keith Altham in the studio in 1968 with the Rolling Stones (and Jean-Luc Godard!); a 1971 Roy Carr rendezvous with the skinhead edition of Slade; and Joe "Mr. C" McEwen profiling the splendidly eccentric Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams in 1975. Jasper rounds matters off with quotes from David Toop's 2001 Wire interview with the brilliant Björk … and a brief chat about Boris Johnson's new nemesis Stormzy. Oh, and to prove we're not just about yesteryear, we've compiled a playlist of our favourite tracks of 2019: beautiful & thrilling music by the likes of Lizzo, Foals, Brittany Howard, Bon Iver, Nilüfer Yanya, Rustin Man, Billie Eilish, Vampire Weekend, Joan Shelley... and of course Amyl & the Sniffers! Pieces discussed: Aretha Franklin: Amazing Grace film, Amazing Grace album, Rev. James Cleveland, Jerry Wexler, Garageband, Sloan, Mark Ronson audio, Stones set studio on fire, Lionel Hampton, Sly & the Family Stone, Slade, Carl Palmer, Swamp Dogg, Culture Club, Pavement, De La Soul, Björk, Jamie Cullum and Stormzy. The RBP podcast is part of the Pantheon Podcasts network.
Summer Fun in '41 January 12, 1941 - In this episode Jack is late with no script. His writers are not worried. This is a very funny episode on a whole different level. References include Popeye cartoons, Jazzbo ties, Presidential candidate Wendell Wilkie, and the New York Rangers hockey team. Plus, listen for an interesting look at the phrase "Long time, no see". And a robot!
Fila Brazillia - Harmonicas Are Shite Jazzbo Edit by Mr Turner DL >> https://hypeddit.com/track/srydfy "In 1990 David 'Man' McSherry and Steve Cobby began to record as Fila Brazillia. Hitherto their collaborations had been infrequent and ultra-spontaneous. Both had maintained positions in conventional bands but needed to trade the constraints of the "write - rehearse - gig - record" treadmill for a more fluent, and ultimately enjoyable approach. A nursery period for a music culled from sonic experiments and ideas quickly put to tape emerged. A treatment of all sounds as "objet trouvé" and a hobbyist attitude prevailed. When Dave Brennand a.k.a. Porky heard a piece composed on a wet Wednesday, he asked to release it. They happily agreed. As previous unreleased work hadn't warranted anything but comedy monickers - "Dada Black Sheep" being one - a name was needed. At that time the media's "killer dog frenzy" was in full swing and a breed known as the fila brasiliero was the subject of a debate in the Commons. This was misheard on the radio by Steve, proposed and accepted for the single and eventually the name stuck. The track "Mermaids", was Fila Brazillia's first single, released in Spring 1991, and marked the beginning of a decade which saw Fila yield seven highly acclaimed albums and a skip-full of singles on Pork Recordings and over 60 remixes." Steve Cobby's current projects (2009) include establishing Steel Tiger Records with Sim Lister; home to J*S*T*A*R*S and The Cutler (Cobby collaborations with Lister and Porky).
We crack 2018 open with an exceptional conversation from a long-standing music industry pioneer bred out of the golden age of hip-hop journalists. A very unique man indeed - Joseph Patel also known to some as Jazzbo. In the years of print journalism, he contributed extensively to Ego Trip, The Source, URB, Rap Pages, Vibe, Mass Appeal, One Nut, Bomb, and countless others. He was at the birth of Sole Sides along with Jeff Chang, DJ Shadown, Asia Born, n' crew. Then moved to NYC, worked at MTV, Vice, The Fader and even the ill fated 360HipHop. We talk about it all and how he wrote the bio's for 'Midnight Marauders', 'Fantastic Vol. 1' and N.E.R.D.'s debut 'In Search Of...'. Lots of insight and banter for old and young. Prince Jazzbo is a Jamaican DJ and was very successful as a Producer in Reggae music with his Ujama record label. Jazzbo started as a DJ on Killa Whip sound in the Homestead area of Spanish Town. At A dance between Killa Whip and Ruddy's Sound in 1971, Jazzbo "clashed" with the great I-Roy. This clash was the start of some of the first musical "beef" between artists - well before Beenie and Capleton and Tupac and Biggie. More importantly, it was a patron by the name of Coxsone Dodd who was at that dance, that invited Jazzbo to Studio One to record the very next morning. Jazzbo was there at 5:00am waiting for Coxsone. Prince Jazzbo is from the original school of toasters in Jamaica - alongside U-Roy, I-Roy, Big Youth, Lizzy, Dennis Alcapone, and others. The style of Dj'ing has a unique sound and style in that era. At the time of this interview Jazzbo was actively producing the artists Horace Ferguson, Horace Andy, Buzz Parker, Little Jazzbo (his son), and Black Thunder out of Belgium. Visit the source: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Prince-Jazzbo/540441745982050 Now, if you like what you hear, we encourage you to seek out and purchase great Prince Jazzbo music. Buy his albums in the shops, on I-Tunes, and via Ernie B reggae.
The boys take it easy this time out with an all jazz police episode. Pat is revealed to be a beet-hating blasphemer, while Mike explains that Gordon Sumner isn't as bad as all that. King Crimson – RED; Sting – THE DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES; The Sea and Cake – EVERYBODY; Norah Jones – LITTLE BROKEN HEARTS; Gregory Porter – BE GOOD (Mike's bad). Oh yeah - it is ON, Norah Jones.
Ugh! I had to replace my "Black Legacy" playlist, originally meant for today's webcast (Sept. 3rd, 2011 2pm - 4pm @ www.killradio.org). Why? After the implosion of last week's CSC ("Beats, Breakbeats, Scratches and Bass"), I found the "Black Legacy" show to be as implosion-possible as the "BBSB" show was. Frakkin' heavy handed DJing if ya' ask me...and now I'm scared that I've lost my playlist-making powers. So fine, let's jump to my "Children's Show" with music that was a part of my youth as well as music made for children from the 40's - 70's. No way to misstep with kiddie music, right?!! Right?!! Answer ME!!! Many tracks played throughout today's show I was happy to find thanks to the magic of the Internet. Perfect examples are all the tracks by the Record Guild of America, Inc., that during the 1940's produced a number of children's music records on 45rpm. I was lucky enough to find them available in .mp3 format along with the original artwork. (Check out the link which proves I'm tellin' the truth). One of the tracks that I was practically raised on was "Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winter Group, as it was played (by my brother and I mostly) on my parents' jukebox growing up. Actually it was my Mom's jukebox, an anniversary present my Dad gave to her back in the early 70's. It looks just like the one linked and I just saw a similar one for sale at a vintage clothing store in Echo Park, although someone painted red paint all over what was originally silver metal and stained wood. Also Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Sheherezade was another track that I have my Mom to thank for. I can remember "The Young Prince and the Young Princess" being played while my family and I did housework and yardwork on the weekends. For that reason, this show is very much dedicated, with much love and affection, to my Mom and all the great music that she exposed me to growing up. 1. On November 2nd Deadly Dragon Sound is proud to announce their latest limited edition reissue: Ujama / Deadly Dragon Link Up part 4!: Manchez - The STRUGGLER!!! We were so proud of this reissue that we have put together this podcast in celebration of its release:Manchez - Struggler on Ujama / Deadly Dragon Sound 7". Limited Edition Reissue available only at www.deadlydragonsound.com. A few months ago we found this Manchez 7" and were simply blown away -- it is rare for us to find a record that we have NEVER seen and even rarer when that tune is simply brilliant. A total unknown, Manchez combined the urgency of such great 80s singjays as Courtney Melody, Half Pint and Pinchers to create this fiery slab of Digital Righteousness that rides over a driving version of MPLA! When we went to Jazzbo, he could barely remember who Manchez was but had no problem locating the tapes for us alongside a KILLER dub version.
