Many people in Paragould know Michael Todd as Coach Todd. Others know him as Mr. Todd, their principal at Greene County Tech. In this episode of The Paragould Podcast, we sit down with Coach Todd to hear the story behind both roles. Originally from Parkin, Arkansas, Mike shares about his undefeated high school football season in 1979, earning a scholarship to play at Arkansas State, and the unexpected path that eventually led him to Paragould. What began as a coaching opportunity at Greene County Tech in 1990 turned into decades of impact as a football coach, teacher, and eventually a school administrator. We talk about the coaches and athletes who shaped those years, the transition from the field to school leadership, and what he learned about coaching young people along the way. Now in retirement, Mike has taken on a new challenge, losing 152 pounds, staying active by playing pickleball several hours a day, and focusing on healthier habits. Along the way, he shares a simple leadership philosophy that guided his career: Leadership is seeing the potential in others and helping them see it themselves. This is a great conversation about coaching, leadership, and the lasting influence of educators in a community like Paragould.

In this episode I'm joined by Lee Robinson to talk about his new book 'Jonty: The Life of Jonathan Parkin', arguably the greatest rugby league scrum-half of all time. Jonty's career began as a teenager with Wakefield Trinity before World War One and ended in 1932, by which time he had become the first player ever to tour Down Under three times, twice as captain, and had played in every international match in which he could be selected before his international retirement in 1930. He did all this during what was arguably Trinity's poorest ever decade. Perhaps most importantly, Jonty was the archetype of the typical scrum-half - combative, tricky and with an inbuilt hostility to authority - and his influence is till felt today. The book is available from https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/136704396053 and you can discover a whole lot more about Wakefield Trinity's history at https://www.trinityheritage.co.uk For more on the history of rugby and the other football codes, take a look at www.rugbyreloaded.com (where you can find the links for this episode) and follow me on Twitter at @collinstony

The abortion market was a powerful economic force in American life. Before legalization lowered the cost, one million women each year collectively paid upward of $750 million for abortions. In The Abortion Market: Buying and Selling Access in the Era Before Roe (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2025), Dr. Katherine Parkin reveals the strength of a massive consumer market that involved loans, advertising, and travel, as well as the costs associated with the procedure itself. Laying the foundation for the emergence of a public market that facilitated the buying and selling of abortions, wealthy population control ideologues encouraged positive public discourse on abortion, funded medical studies, and waged legal battles. White, middle- and upper-class women sought out abortions and paid exorbitantly for them. Male entrepreneurs emerged to capitalize on the booming market and profit from the incredible demand. Advertising on billboards and in college newspapers, men profited by providing the phone number, getting kickbacks for delivering patients, and arranging for women's travel to Mexico, Puerto Rico, England, and Japan. Students demanded abortion access and organized when it came at a steep cost, especially to the poorest among them. Abortion providers in Kansas, California, and Washington, D.C. attracted out-of-state consumers, with some women aided by their universities or by medical insurance. Between 1970 and 1973, entrepreneurs, providers, and hundreds of thousands of women seeking to buy abortions headed to New York City, heralded by some as the “abortion capital of the world.” While we may have imagined that securing an abortion was best understood as a hidden, woman-only experience, The Abortion Market reveals the extent to which businesses and businessmen openly selling abortion access shaped the experience of buying abortions for millions of women. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. This week we have 2 hours with Dave Jones where we are trying to get to the bottom of why on earth he thought Parkin was the answer. Along the way we hear stories of the financial struggle Cardiff went through and how he had to hijack players on motorways to get them to come to Cardiff. While at Southampton Jones was falsely accused of abuse allegations which ultimately led to his dismissal and a great deal of mental stress, with football being his escape during his period. We also dig down on his recruitment strategy which is like a half way house for players with 'flawed' lives off the pitch that other clubs don't want to touch and just how Jones managed to get the best out of them. Podcast: This week on the show we feature a pre-recorded in-person conversation with OM C. Parkin at Gut Saunstorf near the Baltic in Germany. We discuss the intention behind Gut Saunstorf as a modern monastery, the impact that digitization in the external world has on our ability to do internal work, and more. OM C. Parkin is a renowned European wisdom teacher and the initiator of the OM Foundation Inner Science and the publishing house for wisdom literature  advaitaMedia, the founder and director of the mystery school Enneallionce—School of the Fourth Way, and Gut Saunstorf Monastery—Place of Stillness. OM embodies in his work the link between Eastern non-duality and Christian mysticism, of depth psychology and philosophy, beyond the limits of religions and confessions. He often references the tradition of Advaita Vedanta, which has been revived in the 20th century by Shri Ramana Maharshi, Shri H.W.L. Poonja, the American Gangaji, and that of the Fourth Way of G. I. Gurdjieff. OM acts in the tradition of these teachers and by being rooted in early Christian teaching. His work in the tradition of silence can be described by three functions: teacher (of wisdom), healer (of the soul), seer (of the heart). He has been supporting people to find their true nature for more than 30 years and founded the modern Satsang movement in Europe. More information about OM C. Parkin's work can be found at: OM C. Twenty-five years ago, Dave Parkin opened Blackbird Sound Studio in Perth, Western Australia, an independent recording studio that he own's and manages. Since then, he's been working in the music industry, picking up awards along the way—including 14 WAMI Producer of the Year wins and an ARIA-winning song—plus a handful of nominations. Dave's had numerous songs chart in the ARIA rankings and a few tracks in the Triple J Hottest 100, with one reaching #2 and several others making the top 10.Beyond the accolades, one of the most rewarding parts of his career has been working closely with bands such as Jebediah, South Summit, Old Mervs, Great Gable, and Spacey Jane, to name a few, on song structure, arrangement, and helping shape their sound. He's had the privilege of contributing to the launch of many successful artists, both independent and signed to record labels, guiding them through the creative process and bringing their music to life.Despite all that, Dave has kept a pretty low-key online presence and hasn't relied much on advertising— he's always preferred to let the music speak for itself, and people find him through the work he's done. More than anything, Dave loves what he does and feels lucky to have built a career around it. These days, he's found a better balance between work and family, trading the long, late hours of his 20s for a more sustainable routine. From University Press of Kansas: “Serpents of War” is the memoir of Pennsylvanian Major Harry Dravo Parkin, is a rare account of World War I as seen from the perspective of a battalion commander. As a mid-level officer responsible for the lives and welfare of over a thousand men, Parkin conveys the stress of command at a time when one innocent blunder could cost an officer his combat assignment, brings the inferno of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive to life in terrifying, gory detail, and recounts being taken prisoner by the Imperial German Army—a rare experience among American soldiers in 1918. In addition, Parkin provides a detailed account of the 79th Division's attack on Mountfaucon, a military action that remains controversial to this day. This is a book by a brave soldier, a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroism on the battlefield, and a gifted writer.   “Serpents of War" is an abridged edition of a nearly 200,000-word World War I memoir that resides in Gettysburg College's Musselman Library, enhanced by the contributions of two scholars of World War I and memory. Written in an unassuming but eloquent style, Parkin's narrative seldom strains for effect. It possesses a strong sense of setting, a knack for capturing the chaos and strange exhilaration of battle, and a sharp eye for the interpersonal, social dynamics of military life—the personality clashes and simmering feuds, as well as the moments of comradeship and accord. “Serpents of War” is an absorbing memoir that holds the reader's attention from beginning to end.   Dr. Trout's Travels in Harry Parkin's footsteps -   https://kansaspress.ku.edu/blog/2024/09/26/on-the-serpents-trail-following-the-footsteps-of-harry-dravo-parkin/ Where to buy “Serpents of War: An American Officer's Story of World War I Combat and Captivity” -   https://kansaspress.ku.edu/9780700635054/serpents-of-war/ The BFWWP is on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/BattlesoftheFirstWorldWarPodcast.    Any questions, comments or concerns please contact me through the website, www.firstworldwarpodcast.com. The fellas are back this week with a laundry list of holiday related topics to tackle. After a lengthy diatribe on their local Parkin issues (and why Dave feels and inner calling to stand on his porch), they talk about cold plunges, new Christmas music, the backstory behind Dave's new single, a bit about Thanksgiving, and why Jon might need therapy after seeing one two many dish towels on the counter.  JOIN US: http://dadville.substack.com Thanks to our sponsors!
