Gaining weight. But your labs are “normal”? Host: Robyn Engelson Guest: Dr. Doriana Parkin Episode Summary: In this enlightening episode, Robyn engages in a conversation with Dr. Doriana Parkin, a family doctor trained in traditional western medicine. Together, we delve into the complex connection between thyroid health, gut function, and the deep impact of emotional trauma. Dr. Parkin uncovers how even when lab results appear "normal," many patients continue to suffer from symptoms like fatigue, anxiety, and chronic pain. The conversation explores how emotional well-being, early life stress, and unresolved trauma can play a pivotal role in disrupting physical health, particularly the thyroid and gut systems. Dr. Parkin shares her approach to compassionate, trauma-informed care and explains why validating a patient's personal story is just as crucial as analyzing lab reports. This episode offers profound insights into how to listen to your body and advocate for your own health. You'll learn: How emotional trauma, especially childhood stress, can impact thyroid health and gut function, leading to chronic health issues. The significance of mind-body connection in understanding symptoms that lab tests often fail to explain. Why patients with normal lab results can still experience debilitating symptoms, and how emotional history is key to finding the root cause. The crucial role of compassionate, trauma-informed care in healing chronic illnesses. How to trust your body's signals and seek the right kind of medical support when you feel dismissed. Memorable Quotes: ““Thyroid health isn't just about the numbers—it's about understanding the emotional story behind those numbers.” “Your symptoms may not show up in a test, but that doesn't mean they're not real or treatable.” “Compassionate care listens to both the body and the story it tells.” “The gut and thyroid are deeply connected; if one is off, it can disrupt the other.” “You're your own advocate—trust your instincts and find a provider who respects your health journey.” Resources & Mentions: Dr. Doriana Parkin's approach to thyroid and gut health. Research on the connection between gut health, thyroid function, and autoimmune diseases. Integrative medicine approaches to diagnosing beyond conventional lab work. Clinics and practices focused on compassionate and integrative care for thyroid health. Actionable Steps for Listeners: Trust Your Symptoms: If your body is telling you something isn't right—even when tests come back "fine"—trust that feeling. Your symptoms are valid and deserve attention. Prioritize Emotional Healing: Consider how past emotional trauma may be affecting your physical health. Seek care that addresses both the mind and body. Focus on Gut Health: Your gut plays a significant role in thyroid health. Consult with a professional who can help balance your gut and thyroid together. Seek Compassionate Care: Don't settle for healthcare that dismisses your concerns. Advocate for a provider who listens and integrates emotional and physical care. Final Thought: True healing begins when you're fully seen and heard. When patients feel understood and their health concerns are validated—not dismissed—they are empowered to begin the journey toward recovery. Compassionate care isn't just a luxury, it's essential for true healing. If you feel your symptoms are ignored, it's time to find a healthcare provider who understands your unique story and addresses both your emotional and physical health needs. What listeners have to say: “Dr. Parkin's approach was a breath of fresh air. She truly listened and validated my experiences, which made me feel understood for the first time. This episode opened my eyes to the crucial link between emotions and physical health. I now feel empowered to take control of my healing journey.” Loved this episode? Twenty-five years ago, Dave Parkin opened Blackbird Sound Studio in Perth, Western Australia, an independent recording studio that he own's and manages. Since then, he's been working in the music industry, picking up awards along the way—including 14 WAMI Producer of the Year wins and an ARIA-winning song—plus a handful of nominations. Dave's had numerous songs chart in the ARIA rankings and a few tracks in the Triple J Hottest 100, with one reaching #2 and several others making the top 10.Beyond the accolades, one of the most rewarding parts of his career has been working closely with bands such as Jebediah, South Summit, Old Mervs, Great Gable, and Spacey Jane, to name a few, on song structure, arrangement, and helping shape their sound. He's had the privilege of contributing to the launch of many successful artists, both independent and signed to record labels, guiding them through the creative process and bringing their music to life.Despite all that, Dave has kept a pretty low-key online presence and hasn't relied much on advertising— he's always preferred to let the music speak for itself, and people find him through the work he's done. More than anything, Dave loves what he does and feels lucky to have built a career around it. These days, he's found a better balance between work and family, trading the long, late hours of his 20s for a more sustainable routine. Making music is still his passion, but so is spending time with his wife and kids.IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:Getting started with running a studioHow to find good bands to trust you with working on their musicBeing open to experimentationDealing with impostor syndromeHow to create clarity with effectsAutomating effects during the tracking stageWhen to use reverb vs. delayCreating movement in a mix through sidechained effectsDistorting drumsHis trick for tracking big, fat snare soundsTo learn more about Dave Parkin, visit: http://www.blackbirdstudio.com.au/Looking for 1-on-1 feedback and training to help you create pro-quality mixes?Check out my coaching program Amplitude and apply to join:https://masteryourmix.com/amplitude/ Want additional help with your music productions? For tips on how to improve your mixes, visit: https://masteryourmix.com/ Download your FREE copy of the Ultimate Mixing Blueprint: https://masteryourmix.com/blueprint/ Get your copy of my Amazon #1 bestselling books:The Recording Mindset: A Step-By-Step Guide to Creating Pro Recordings From Your Home Studio: https://therecordingmindset.com The Mixing Mindset: The Step-By-Step Formula For Creating Professional Rock Mixes From Your Home Studio: https://masteryourmix.com/mixingmindsetbook/ Check out our Sponsors:Want more Mixing or Mastering clients? Very rarely are sequels as good as the original. But in this case USA and Canada was akin to the Ali vs. Frazier trilogy. This might very well be the best hockey game ever seen. The opener on Saturday drew over 10 million viewers. I expect this championship game to supersede even that! Enjoy this one. Also shoutout to Alec Nava for coverage through this entire tournament. I can't wait to work in the booth with him (among others) for real someday!
On this edition of Parallax Views w/ J.G. Michael, award-winning journalist and author Simon Parkin joins us to discuss his latest book, The Forbidden Garden: The Botanists of Besieged Leningrad and Their Impossible Choice. This gripping true story explores the incredible sacrifice of scientists at the world's first seed bank, who risked—and even gave—their lives to protect a vast collection of plant biodiversity during the brutal Siege of Leningrad in World War II. We dive into the differing scientific views of pioneering botanist and geneticist Nikolai Vavilov and Soviet agronomist Trofim Lysenko, whose controversial theories led to disastrous agricultural policies and whose influence in the Soviet Union did Vavilov no favors. In the latter part of the conversation, Parkin shares insights from his work as a video game journalist, addressing concerns about the "Fortnite-ification" of the gaming industry—where games are increasingly developed as just monetized content rather than as artistic experiences. We also discuss his Atlantic article, "How a School Shooting Became a Video Game", which covers The Final Exam, a controversial video game designed to raise awareness about school shootings. Created by Change the Ref, an organization founded by Manuel and Patricia Oliver after their son Joaquin was killed in the 2018 Parkland shooting, the game forces players to experience the horror of a school shooting scenario—not for shock value, but to confront the grim reality of gun violence in America. Tune in for this powerful discussion on history, science, video games, and social issues—only on Parallax Views w/ J.G. Michael.

For our Series 5 finale, we're talking about the history and folklore of England's largest county, and Eleanor is telling a story so epic we've split it into three ridings! Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. As a mid-level officer responsible for the lives and welfare of over a thousand men, Parkin conveys the stress of command at a time when one innocent blunder could cost an officer his combat assignment, brings the inferno of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive to life in terrifying, gory detail, and recounts being taken prisoner by the Imperial German Army—a rare experience among American soldiers in 1918. In addition, Parkin provides a detailed account of the 79th Division's attack on Mountfaucon, a military action that remains controversial to this day. This is a book by a brave soldier, a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroism on the battlefield, and a gifted writer. “Serpents of War" is an abridged edition of a nearly 200,000-word World War I memoir that resides in Gettysburg College's Musselman Library, enhanced by the contributions of two scholars of World War I and memory. Written in an unassuming but eloquent style, Parkin's narrative seldom strains for effect. It possesses a strong sense of setting, a knack for capturing the chaos and strange exhilaration of battle, and a sharp eye for the interpersonal, social dynamics of military life—the personality clashes and simmering feuds, as well as the moments of comradeship and accord. “Serpents of War” is an absorbing memoir that holds the reader's attention from beginning to end. Podcast: This week on the show we feature a prerecorded conversation with OM C. Parkin on the challenges and paradoxes around languaging Non-Duality and how to tune into the silence between the words when engaging with a sacred text. OM C. Parkin is a renowned European wisdom teacher and the founder of the mystery school, Enneallionce, and Gut Saunstorf, a modern monastery. His books also include Intelligence of Awakening - Navigating the Wisdom Path, The Birth of the Lion, and The Digital Age - A Critical View from a Wisdom Perspective. OM embodies in his work the link between Eastern non-duality and Christian mysticism, of depth psychology and philosophy, beyond the limits of religions and confessions. He often references the tradition of Advaita Vedanta, which has been revived in the 20th century by Shri Ramana Maharshi, Shri H.W.L. Poonja, the American Gangaji, and others. OM acts in the tradition of these teachers and by being rooted in early Christian teaching. His work in the tradition of silence can be described by three functions: teacher (of wisdom), healer (of the soul), seer (of the heart). He has been supporting people to find their true nature for more than 30 years and founded the modern Satsang movement in Europe. More information about OM C. Parkin's work can be found at: OM C. Bailey Van Tassel interviews author and journalist Simon Parkin about his book, The Forbidden Garden - The Botanists of Besieged Leningrad and Their Impossible Choice. Bailey recommends this as one of her favorite books, as it is wildly important in modern times to understand the importance of seeds and their ultimate fragility. Parkin talks about how he came to find this story and the importance of telling it. There are a few spoilers in the interview, but not many. Parkin shares his exploration of this question: should the botanists in charge of the world's first seed bank use the seeds to feed people amidst starvation and a harsh winter, or do they stick to their pledge of saving the seeds for the sake of humanity's future, and scientific progress in finding better ways to grow invaluable crops? Listen in to hear more about the telling of this story and what we can learn from it. DeAnn Parkin, a mother of three from Ovid, Idaho, has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison for attempting to solicit a murder through a satirical "Rent-a-Hitman" website. The sentencing occurred last Thursday in Senior U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill's courtroom, following Parkin's admission of guilt nearly a year after contacting the fake site. Parkin, now 31, confessed to seeking someone to murder a woman living with her ex-husband in Wyoming. Identified only as "L.A.," Parkin accused the woman of having an affair with her husband and causing turmoil in her family due to drug abuse and alleged involvement in prostitution. Rent-A-Hitman is a satirical website that promotes itself as the ultimate solution to targeted problems, dubbing it the "Point and Click Solution" and boasting a claim of being "100% HIPPA compliant" (Hitman Information Privacy and Protection Act of 1964) on its landing page. The site features a section dedicated to customer testimonials, showcasing comments and blurred images for anonymity. One such testimonial from Phil M. of Florida lauds the service, stating, "Guido and his public relations crew at RENT-A-HITMAN were able to resolve a five-year dispute in a matter of days. Highly recommended!" Furthermore, the website offers various discount packages catering to different groups, including seniors, military personnel, and even Walmart associates. Notably, it extends a nod to Joseph Allen Maldonado, famously known as Joe Exotic, with an additional 10% off if customers mention "Cool Cats and Kittens. Parkin's intentions came to light when she reportedly provided her Idaho address and phone number, along with detailed accusations against the target, in an application on the website: “I would like (the intended victim) to stay away from my husband and my family. She has helped ruin our family and broken it up with her drug abuse and her prostitution services. She has ruined her autistic son life and leaves him with strangers along w my husband to take care of him and uses her son to get my husband to come back to her and then get him more hooked on meth so she can go out and do her own thing while breaking other families lives.” “Make her go away where she won't ruin no one's lives no more stops contacting my husband, give her son a better life. She has ruined my family life enough that who knows if it's even possible to be fixed. Take her to another continent or make her disappear completely where no one hears from her again anything to make her go aways for good please and thank you.” Upon receiving this information, the website owner promptly notified the authorities, leading to an official investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which commenced on May 23. Subsequent exchanges between Parkin and an undercover ATF agent posing as a hitman revealed the plot details. Text messages retrieved from court documents unveiled Parkin's readiness to pay for the execution, her fear of law enforcement intervention, and her indifference to the potential consequences, even expressing a willingness to sacrifice her own life. On May 24, the agent and Parkin spoke on the phone while the agent was secretly recording. During the discussion, Parkin reportedly stated she was “willing to do anything” regarding her problem and that she “did not care if it means her being in a six-foot hole… I'm fine with that.” On June 6, Parkin met with the undercover agent at her workplace in Bear Lake County. During the encounter, Mrs. Parkin reportedly confirmed her resolve to proceed with the plan, expressing a disturbing lack of concern for the well-being of the intended victim and her own son. Following this meeting, Parkin handed over $100 in cash and a diamond ring she claimed was worth $1,500, as a down payment for the hit. She also agreed to pay the remainder in installments. U.S. Attorney Josh Hurwit of the District of Idaho condemned Parkin's actions, labeling them "shocking." He emphasized law enforcement's vigilance in preventing such crimes and vowed to hold violent offenders accountable, regardless of the nature of their criminal conduct.
