In 1969, the Harlem Cultural Festival was a joyous celebration of Black culture, music and Harlem, in a time of so much societal shift. Despite how powerful this festival was, for decades, it was erased. The 2021 documentary Summer of Soul (...or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) brought this restored footage to public.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

While we gear up for Season 4, we are sharing some of our favorite shows from the past few years. Next up is "Summer of Soul", and our interview with director Amir "Questlove" Thompson. Since we first aired this show in January of 2022, the film went on to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson joins us to talk about his Oscar-shortlisted “Summer of Soul (…or, When the Revolution Could Not be Televised)”. In the summer of 1969, a music festival took place in New York that attracted over 300,000 people. Featuring some of the most incredible artists of that — or any — era, it caught the cultural wave of the moment. No, it wasn't Woodstock. And, until very recently, practically nobody knew it ever took place. Featuring stunning, previously unseen archival performance footage and incorporating an array of enthralling interviews, game-changing debut documentary “Summer of Soul” is a joyful celebration of the Harlem Cultural Festival and a long-delayed corrective to an egregious example of Black erasure. Winner of both the 2021 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for Best U.S. Documentary. “Summer of Love” is Oscar shortlisted for Best Documentary Feature. Fresh off the set of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where he serves as Musical Director, Questlove joined Mike and Ken for a spellbinding conversation, showcasing his unique skills as a storyteller. How is it that even a musical aficionado of Questlove's renown was skeptical that such a concert ever happened? What was his initial reaction to seeing this long-forgotten footage? How did he crack the code of doing justice to the towering musical performances happening on stage and conveying the broader social and political movements happening off it? What inspired him to start the film with Stevie Wonder on drums? And, what about David Ruffin's sartorial choices? Tune in to this episode of Top Docs for answers to these questions and a whole lot more. Questlove in conversation is its own sublime music set. Headphones not included.

When we get hurt or betrayed we put up walls to protect ourselves, but Pastor Hooper Sr. reminds us that we need to have a gate and allow ourselves to trust others again.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Sam Pollard (MLK/FBI), and executive produced by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson (Oscar-winning SUMMER OF SOUL), Tariq Trotter (DESCENDANT), and produced by RadicalMedia , THE LEAGUE celebrates the dynamic journey of Negro League baseball's triumphs and challenges through the first half of the twentieth century. The story is told through previously unearthed archival footage and never-before-seen interviews with legendary players like Satchel Paige and Buck O'Neil – whose early careers paved the way for the Jackie Robinson era – as well as celebrated Hall of Famers Willie Mays and Hank Aaron who started out in the Negro Leagues. From entrepreneurial titans Cumberland Posey and Gus Greenlee, whose intense rivalry fueled the rise of two of the best baseball teams ever to play the game, to Effa Manley, the activist owner of the Newark Eagles and the only woman ever admitted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, THE LEAGUE explores Black baseball as an economic and social pillar of Black communities and a stage for some of the greatest athletes to ever play the game, while also examining the unintended consequences of integration. Director Sam Pollard (Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power, Citizen Ashe, Tiger) joins us for a conversation on the multi-layered history of the Black ballplayer's quest for inclusion, compensation and respect. The story begins in 1890's Jim Crow laws forcing out the few Black players already playing with white players in the nascent professional leagues and culminates with the signing of Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson to a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers and soon after Larry Dolby to a contract with the American League's Cleveland Indians.
Indy reviews Summer of Soul, the documentary by Questlove that recounts the influential but largely forgotten 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, Samantha suggests Jennifer Weiner's That Summer as your next summer beach read, and then we preview next week's big watch: The Talented Mr. Ripley! Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) is a 2021 American independent documentary film about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, directed by Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson in his directorial debut.[5] It had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on January 28, 2021, where it won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the documentary categories. It had a limited theatrical release in the U.S. by Searchlight Pictures on June 25, 2021, before expanding and being released for streaming on Hulu the next weekend. That Summer by Jennifer Weiner: Daisy Shoemaker can't sleep. With a thriving cooking business, full schedule of volunteer work, and a beautiful home in the Philadelphia suburbs, she should be content. But her teenage daughter can be a handful; her husband can be distant, her work can feel trivial, and she has lots of acquaintances, but no real friends. Still, Daisy knows she's got it good. So why is she up all night? I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa

In this message, Derek Staaland challenges us with some powerful truths when it comes to how we handle pain and difficult situations in our past. Oftentimes, what we walk through creates definitive decisions that affect our daily lives in the present. Those decisions can then create barriers to actual freedom, healing, and growth! But what happens when we decide to invite God into those areas of our lives? ------------------------------------------ FOLLOW City First Church: Website: https://www.cityfirst.church Instagram: https://instagram.com/CityFirstChurch Twitter: https://twitter.com/CityFirstChurch Facebook: https://facebook.com/CityFirstChurch

Hey film buds,Summer is a unique time of year. It conjures up both the excitement of possibility and the nostalgia of Summers-past. And though we all have different ways of enjoying it, we all feel that Summer call to shed layers and run out into the heat. Though it is certainly fun to experience that Summer feeling in the fantastical films of Jaws or Do the Right Thing, we thought it could be just as fun to experience something grounded in reality with two documentary films. Introduction - 00:00Opening ChatSummer SeasonFirst is one of the most iconic films in documentary and sporting history; The Endless Summer. It was a labor of love, working in an old-fashioned documentary form, and it is often credited with being the film that made surfing mainstream. We touch on all these topics in this conversation with Lester, who also talks about his latest venture, the band Moonalice. https://www.moonalice.com/splash https://www.songfacts.com/ https://www.facebook.com/songfacts https://twitter.com/Songfacts http://pantheonpodcasts.com/ https://twitter.com/pantheonpods Hosted and Edited by Corey O'Flanagan https://twitter.com/ofe1818 https://www.instagram.com/coreyofe/ corey@songfacts.com Songfacts Podcast Spotify Playlist https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3IThMW5yB8XnFh5cS2gTxR?si=KAhiqWRcSIy5uxb2sZPFTA This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts. It was the summer of '69. The Kennedies were dead, Dr. King was dead, Malcolm X was dead, Woodstock was happening, and man just landed on the moon, but the story you didn't hear was about the 3rd annual Harlem Cultural Festival. After sitting in a basement for 50 years, this documentary gathers attendees and performers to reminisce about the festival and what it meant for them and their community during a time of turbulation and division in this country. Joe is joined by Julio Olivera from The Contrarians podcast to talk about SUMMER OF SOUL as well as the other 2022 Oscar nominees: WRITING WITH FIRE, ATTICA, ASCENSION, and FLEE. In the year 1969, Richard Nixon became president of the United States, James Earl Ray plead guilty to the murder of Dr Martin Luther King, multiple planes are hijacked to Cuba, the Stonewall Rebellion took place, and the war in Vietnam raged on.….but there was an incredible music festival that took place for the third time in Mt Morris Park in Harlem, that for years no one recalled.Welcome to See Hear Podcast episode 95.Tony Lawrence was a lounge singer who had a vision to bring some joy and positivity to Harlem. The African American population had undergone poverty and police brutality. Lawrence assembled the first Harlem Cultural Festival in 1967, but the lineup of 1967 was truly amazing. Started a full two months before Woodstock, this festival held over a series of weekends over the summer featured the likes of Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, The Staple Singers, The Fifth Dimension, B.B. King and many others. 40 hours of festival footage was shot for local TV networks, but shortly after, the festival and its footage were forgotten by most – and Woodstock became ubiquitous in popular myth as the cultural event of a generation. In 2021, drummer, DJ and music director Questlove released the film “Summer of Soul (Or When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised)” about that event featuring much of that magnificent footage.....but this is not a concert film in the conventional sense. There are interviews with musicians and those who attended the shows – both from the time and contemporary. To contextualise the period the show was born into, we get news clips about the moon landing, poverty, radicalism, Martin Luther King's assassination and a lot more. This footage is not slotted in as an afterthought – it goes hand in hand with the music, and is a masterpiece of editing.Tim was not available, but Bernie and Maurice were joined by film writer, broadcaster, and commentator Emma Westwood to discuss the wonder of the event – both musically and politically. The film is completely worthy of the praise and hype. We hope to convince you that you need to see this – in a cinema or on a streaming service. Our gratitude goes to Emma who brought an amazing conversation to the show (no surprises there). Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, musician, songwriter, director of "Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)," talks about the Oscar nomination for his film, which was put together from long-forgotten footage of 1969's Harlem Cultural Festival.
Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson's directorial debut, "Summer Of Soul," had its world premiere at last year's Sundance Film Festival, where it went on to win the Grand Jury and Audience prizes for Best Documentary. The accolades did not stop there. The film has garnered more wins than any other documentary film in the awards race this year, including a record-breaking six wins from the Critics Choice Awards, including Best Documentary Feature, Best Director, and Best Editing for Joshua L. Pearson. Thompson and Pearson were both kind enough to take some time to talk with us about the film, working with the mammoth amount of footage they had from the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, their reaction to the film's success, and more.
