In this episode, Mark Baratto sits down with published author, Richard "Conch Boy" Gomez to talk about his fictional book based on his own life as a smuggler in Key West during the 80's. More on Key West: A Smuggler's Tale In Key West: A Smuggler's Tale, we meet Bobby Campo, a journalist and native of Key West who is writing his first novel about a subject that has interested him for a number of years. His interview begins with a legendary Key West smuggler, a childhood friend of his very straight-laced father and mother (or so he thought). In the early 1970s until the early 1980s, Norberto Belafonte Diaz smuggled marijuana into the Keys. During the interview he takes Bobby on a winding trail, not only down the backroads of their island home but also down the backroads of that dark history. Bobby is introduced to some of the most memorable characters of that time, each with their own adventure-filled stories. But unbeknownst to Bobby, Norberto is leading him down a path that he has chosen carefully. Key West: A Smuggler's Tale teaches us in the end that under the watchful eye of fate, old wounds can be finally healed. About the Author Richard now resides with the love of his life Michelle, in Jensen Beach, Fl. They both enjoy the retired life. When not traveling they wake each morning to the sound and sight of the ocean as it touches the shore. Life's adventures have turned to memories of a life worth living. Richard plans to continue to write about life on a spit of land surrounded by ocean far far away from normal, but always his idea of paradise. Key West, the place where his dreams became realities. This week in drone news: Texas law 423 has been found unconstitutional by a federal judge, a recreational pilot in New York was fined more than $15,000, an update from our travels to the Texas Public Safety Robot Response Summit, and an upcoming South Florida Drone Meetup. Texas Drone law 423 was ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge The law restricted drone use and distribution of images captured via drones. “The challenged Texas statutes prohibited legitimate newsgathering that causes no harm, and unconstitutionally drew distinctions that disallowed journalistic drone photography but allowed the exact same drone photography when done for other favored purposes. Judge Pitman properly found that these distinctions were improper and that the statutes were so vague as to be unconstitutional.” https://petapixel.com/2022/03/30/stringent-texas-anti-drone-law-overturned-in-federal-court/ A drone pilot from NYC was fined by the FAA over 15k last December. The pilot stated they were operating under 44809 but did not meet the requirements. The operator was issued a $15,205 fine. The FAA issued fines for three flights, including 107.12, No remote pilot certificate, 107.13, drone not registered, 107.19(c) Posing a hazard to people, aircraft or property, 107.23(a) Flying at night without a waiver (Prior to new rules), 107.29(a) Flying over people without a waiver (Prior to new rules), 107.41 Flying in controlled airspace without authorization, 107.65 No 24 month recency of knowledge. Adriana Quinones is happy caring for three children, painting with colorful plastic diamonds, and hanging out with her mom. But something else she'd like in her life--a good man--has proven hard to find. She has intellectual and learning disabilities--compounded by English being her second language. Adriana doesn't always recognize red flags, and has been abused in many ways by love interests. People with intellectual disabilities are at a higher risk of abuse than the general population. Society doesn't always set up adults with intellectual disabilities to succeed in relationships. "Social inclusion is the 'next frontier' issue in intellectual and developmental (IDD) research, policy, and practice," says the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. People with intellectual disabilities are our classmates, coworkers, and neighbors. But the AAIDD says: “Social inclusion goes far beyond just being present in the community. It's about the roles we take in civic life, who we love, and how we build fulfilling relationships with others.” The third season of A Valid Podcast brings listeners into the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and asks what society could do better to support social inclusion. Guests: Adriana Quinones Monica Ruiz Dr. Beverly Frantz, Temple Institute on Disabilities. The podcast is produced by All-Abilities Media at the Center for Media Innovation at Point Park University. The podcast will be published via Unabridged Press podcast channels. Images and written material will appear on PublicSource. A Valid Podcast is on Apple Podcasts, Anchor.fm Spotify, Google Podcasts, and others. Point Park University's Claire Lindsey interviewed Adriana Quinones and Monica Ruiz, thanks to support from the Pittsburgh Media Partnership. Jennifer Szweda Jordan hosts this season with commentary from award-winning podcaster Erin Gannon. PublicSource Managing Editor Halle Stockton provided editorial advice. Jeweltone Production's Liz Reid mixed audio and interviewed guests. Portions of this podcast were recorded at Rain Cat Recording Studio in Jensen Beach, FL. Cover art was created by Mick Fisher, with assistance from Creative Citizen Studios. George Casselberry and Jane Ondrusek, from the Woodlands Foundation, provided music for this season.

ONCE IN A VERY BLUE MOON by Debra LowryBrianna Nelson was born under a “Blue Moon”. Her psychic grandmother, Lilly, predicted that Brianna would “Walk under the Blue Moon” which would prove to be a difficult path. And Lilly was right. Brianna was raised by Mel, her alcoholic father, who could be nice when sober but mean and unpredictable when drinking! Brianna's life was dysfunctional; often she didn't have food to eat, and she was embarrassed to bring any friends home in case her father was on one of his ‘rants'. She did the best she could to survive a life without a mother and without help, a life where she often had to be the parent, buy the food and clean the house! Her Grandmother Lilly did what she could but was constrained by a promise she had made to Brianna's mother, Ivy. But thankfully, Brianna had a protector, Bobby Coleman, a boy who lived across the street who was a few years older than her. Bobby became her guide, her best friend and eventually, her love interest! She also had a faithful, kind friend, Rosie, who stands by her through the joys and the heartaches of her life.Brianna faces many challenges as she grows up, some very difficult and unexpected. But she manages to survive them and grows stronger and more determined to achieve her goals. Her biggest dream is to one day have her own antique business, following in the footsteps of Lilly. Lilly teaches her everything she knows, taking Brianna to auctions and showing her the value of each item she buys.In a climatic, frightening nightmare of a day, Brianna and Bobby are faced with the most horrible incident possible. They pull together to combat the most evil forces imaginable. Brianna will surprise you, impress you and make you laugh! She is an unforgettable woman who is someone you'd like to know!Debra Lowry loved to read from a very early age. She read all of the "Nancy Drew Mysteries,'' as well as just about any book she could get her hands on! She grew up in Davenport, Iowa. She attended The University of Iowa, where she majored in journalism and she was the homecoming queen. She later moved to Miami, Florida and worked on the Miami Herald Newspaper for two years. In 2008 Debra wrote a column for the 'Pineapple Post Newspaper' in Jensen Beach, Florida. She did a lot of human interest stories, interviews with local people and some investigative articles. She was a single mother for many years and raised an outstanding son, Chris Lowry, who went on to join the Army and went to Iraq three times during the years of 2003-2009. It was very harrowing for her and her son but fortunately he came home safely, and is now the father of three delightful children, two girls, ages 4 and 6, and a boy, age 8. Chris is an excellent, devoted father who now lives in Phoenix, Arizona.Debra has suffered with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for many years but has learned to live with and around it. Writing is one of the most important joys and therapies for her. Debra moved to Pt. St. Lucie, Florida and has lived there for 13 years. Join us for a humorous take on Florida news as we share oddball headlines from around the Sunshine State. On Jensen Beach, one freak wins a $100 bet and gets a nurse shark latched on his arm to prove it. In Naples, a man tries to talk his way out of a DUI - in any language he can. On the small screen, ABC's Dancing with the Stars pounces on one of Tiger King's hottest stars, Carole Baskin, to dance her cool kittens off on national television. Finally, a drunk Uber ride in Clearwater turns into a knife-wielding scene from an action movie. Veteran journalists Cory and Kirsten O'Donnell may not be comedians, but they easily find the comedy behind Florida's headlines. About Jo NeesonPlease donate now at http://joneeson.com A vote for Jo is a vote for our precious lifestyle in Martin County. It's time for a change! Your support is needed and very appreciated!*** The primary in August is “closed” meaning you must be a Republican to vote. The primary is critical to my cause. To change parties, go here: https://registertovoteflorida.gov/homeJo Neeson BioI'm Jo Neeson, a multi-generational Jensen Beach resident with a lifelong passion for helping people, the environment, and our beloved Martin County lifestyle. I am also a proud American Veteran. In my early years, I attended elementary school in Illinois before returning to Martin County. Having attended Murray Middle School, Martin County High, and Indian River Community College, my educational foundation is right here, in Martin County. To further my passions after college, I joined the US Air Force as an air evacuation medic. After the Air Force, I furthered my education at Bethania School of Vocational Nursing and remained in Texas, as a hospice respiratory nurse in the home health industry. After 17-years as a nurse, I returned home to Jensen Beach, and have owned, started and managed a variety of local businesses. Health issues that ensued forced me into an early yet temporary retirement. My commitment and passion for helping others continued with a variety of local causes including:Big Brother/ Big Sisters on the fundraising committeeOne of the original River WarriorsA founding member of bullsugar.orgA founder of Tent City Helpers a local homeless assistance organizationJensen Beach Christian Church food pantryTop Five PrioritiesClean water. As an environmental activist, I've studied this issue extensively and traveled to every Senate subcommittee meeting in Tallahassee, having participated in SFWMD meetings WRAC meetings and a variety of science-based classes and seminars.Smart growth. This cannot be accomplished without concentrating on infrastructure. Our water treatment plants are antiquated, we have NO real solution to the disposal of biosolids. Our roads and bridges cannot accommodate the sheer volume of traffic that already exists.Education. School safety and supporting our teachers have got to be at the forefront of any conversation. The homeless. Having been very active in this conversation I feel like the current and past administrations have done very little to address this issue.Diversity. We can't move forward with careful, controlled growth without addressing our entire community in the conversation. I will work to support the underrepresented members of Martin County.I've spent most of my life helping and supporting Martin County's most important issues. As County Commissioner for District 1, I will be able to continue that mission and make sure that we get it right! To do that, I need your support. Please donate to my campaign fund. Your support is not only extremely important right now, but it is also very much appreciated!https://www.facebook.com/mjoneeson/

Former NBA player Mark Blount continues to be successful off the court while being a phenomenal small business owner and real estate investor. Having a professional basketball career for 10 years, Mark Blount has played center for the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics, just to name a few. He recently did an interview on The Undefeated and said “I owned quite a bit of real estate in Palm Beach Gardens — seven buildings. I went in there with a friend of mine. We renovated them, all the units there, and brought them back up to, back then it was 2012 code: new bathrooms, new floors, new kitchens and all that stuff,”. Blount then joined the soft-pretzel franchise Auntie Anne's. He opened two stores in West Palm Beach and one in Jensen Beach, Florida. After building and operating the franchises for four years, he sold the stores to focus on real estate. He purchased them for a little under $700,000 and sold them for about $2M. Nicholas P. Vessio is a resident of the Sunny South Florida neighborhood of Jensen Beach and a candidate for Congress in Florida’s 18th District. His opposition is Republican incumbent, Congressman Brian Mast, who is, I think Mr. Vessio will admit, quite considerable opposition. Vessio, an American-Italian, originally from Long Island, was a professional investigator, holding multiple investigative roles throughout his career as a New York State Policeman. A retired Sergeant in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, Nick attended John Jay School of Criminal Justice in New York City, earning a B.A. in Criminal Justice in 1975 and a Masters in Public Administration in 1983. As an entrepreneur, Nicholas is eclectic, designing sterling silver and copper jewelry, and providing education and research in the private security field. Nick is passionate about several issues: clean water, Pro-Life, pro 2A, school safety, end human trafficking, and institute mandatory recycling for all restaurants and bars. His upcoming book entitled "Policing America in the Twenty First Century... "Challenges and Solutions" is almost completed and should be published soon. Nick was kind enough to sit-down for this candid interview, recorded at the SweatShop. NickVessio.com | NICK VESSIO FOR CONGRESS!
Father Christian and Rabbi Durbin recently celebrated a Friendaversary, but at times can act more like frenemies. So they welcomed a special guest into the studio to help them learn all about bullying. Why do we bully, what should we do if we see bullying taking place, and what if we were the bullies back when we were kids? Daniel Burd is the Co-Director with All Access Productions. He'll guide the Priest and the Rabbi through all of that, and talk about his upcoming productions at Jensen Beach and Martin County High Schools. “If you want something in life, the hard truth is you have to step outside of your comfort zone. You’ll always be your worst critic, but that’s a part of growing. Failing has to happen and it’s a hard pill to swallow, but staying persistent and not giving up will get you where you want to be. Stay humble and don’t be an ass hole!”—and this is the long and short of Connie Manjavinos--this week’s Femcanic in the driver’s seat. Connie is the founder of Girls Behind the Gun, a social media platform that shines light on the women in the auto body/automotive industry. At her day job, she is a tradeswoman/painter at a classic car restoration shop in Jensen Beach, FL. Was great having Taylor on the Podcast. A truly inspiring footballer with a great attitude on football and on life. Taylor is a 24 year old striker from Jensen Beach, Florida currently playing in Sweden for Lidköpings FK. She played College Soccer at UCF for two years before transferring to FAU for her last 2 years. The beginning of her journey was in Peru for 4 months, which she described as “interesting,” and definitely a great experience. She then had a trial with a Champions League team in Romania that ended up falling through due to her needing hip surgery, which caused her to be off the pitch for 9 months. During this time, she realized how much she really loved the game and what it meant to her. Though it gave her some much needed family time and time to learn about herself as a footballer and a person. After her surgery, she came back stronger and just recently resigned for another year with her team in Sweden, where her and her team hope to get promoted to the highest. Guy or girl; you will learn a lot from this podcast. If you wan to contact Taylor, her Instagram is: @taytown17 and Facebook is: Taylor Townsend. She would love if you reached out if you had any specific questions for her.

Good morning, this is your high school wrestling update from the Orlando Sentinel for Thursday, December 7, 2017 – My name is Brant Parsons – and I wish I had more sound-engineer training. The 4th-ranked Barracudas won 8 of the 12 contested bouts and it was enough to beat the 7th-ranked Lions 34-32. Chad Nix’ 8-3 win over Troy Jaffy at 195 pounds put the dual away for Jensen Beach. SW Miami, which moved to No. 3 in Class 3A, easily handled Miami Jackson, winning all but two of the matches contested to win 59-24. In our coverage area, Timber Creek picked up five pins to knock off Oviedo 45-21. Getting wins by fall was Ernesto Maysonet, Corban Arana, Gersan Serrano, Mateus Nunes and Jacob Schalk. After immigrating to the United States in the 1970's my mom's life journey took a challenging and rewarding turn when she pursued a career as a school social worker in one of the most troubled school systems in the country. At home, I grew up with her stories and always noticed the combination of great satisfaction and frequent frustration; the system was a machine and that machine placed very little value on the humans that worked within it or the humans that it was established to serve. But my mother, who values helping others above all else, would not be deterred. On today's program, the kickoff episode for a new season of Realities where the conversations will take place around the dinner table, you will hear from my mother as she and I look back at her career and eventually retirement, and how she sees it all now. The setting is her temporary kitchen table in Jensen Beach, Florida... an appropriate place to evaluate a magnificient career.
