In March 2026, deputies in Brevard County, Florida, responded to a routine trespassing call at a hotel in Jensen Beach and encountered a man dressed in a genuine black-and-white striped inmate uniform from Mitchell County Jail. What appeared at first to be a daring prison escape quickly unraveled into one of the most perplexing displays of questionable judgment in recent memory. This episode examines the circumstances surrounding Ephraim “Farron” Fullerton's arrest, the curious decisions that placed him in that uniform, and why this case earned a featured spot in quarterly “dumbest criminals” roundups.

In this episode, Mark Baratto sits down with published author, Richard "Conch Boy" Gomez to talk about his fictional book based on his own life as a smuggler in Key West during the 80's. More on Key West: A Smuggler's Tale In Key West: A Smuggler's Tale, we meet Bobby Campo, a journalist and native of Key West who is writing his first novel about a subject that has interested him for a number of years. His interview begins with a legendary Key West smuggler, a childhood friend of his very straight-laced father and mother (or so he thought). In the early 1970s until the early 1980s, Norberto Belafonte Diaz smuggled marijuana into the Keys. During the interview he takes Bobby on a winding trail, not only down the backroads of their island home but also down the backroads of that dark history. Bobby is introduced to some of the most memorable characters of that time, each with their own adventure-filled stories. But unbeknownst to Bobby, Norberto is leading him down a path that he has chosen carefully. Key West: A Smuggler's Tale teaches us in the end that under the watchful eye of fate, old wounds can be finally healed. About the Author Richard now resides with the love of his life Michelle, in Jensen Beach, Fl. They both enjoy the retired life. When not traveling they wake each morning to the sound and sight of the ocean as it touches the shore. Life's adventures have turned to memories of a life worth living. Richard plans to continue to write about life on a spit of land surrounded by ocean far far away from normal, but always his idea of paradise. Key West, the place where his dreams became realities. Adriana Quinones is happy caring for three children, painting with colorful plastic diamonds, and hanging out with her mom. But something else she'd like in her life--a good man--has proven hard to find. She has intellectual and learning disabilities--compounded by English being her second language. Adriana doesn't always recognize red flags, and has been abused in many ways by love interests. People with intellectual disabilities are at a higher risk of abuse than the general population. Society doesn't always set up adults with intellectual disabilities to succeed in relationships. "Social inclusion is the 'next frontier' issue in intellectual and developmental (IDD) research, policy, and practice," says the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. People with intellectual disabilities are our classmates, coworkers, and neighbors. But the AAIDD says: “Social inclusion goes far beyond just being present in the community. It's about the roles we take in civic life, who we love, and how we build fulfilling relationships with others.” The third season of A Valid Podcast brings listeners into the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and asks what society could do better to support social inclusion. Guests: Adriana Quinones Monica Ruiz Dr. Beverly Frantz, Temple Institute on Disabilities. The podcast is produced by All-Abilities Media at the Center for Media Innovation at Point Park University. The podcast will be published via Unabridged Press podcast channels. Images and written material will appear on PublicSource. A Valid Podcast is on Apple Podcasts, Anchor.fm Spotify, Google Podcasts, and others. Point Park University's Claire Lindsey interviewed Adriana Quinones and Monica Ruiz, thanks to support from the Pittsburgh Media Partnership. Jennifer Szweda Jordan hosts this season with commentary from award-winning podcaster Erin Gannon. PublicSource Managing Editor Halle Stockton provided editorial advice. Jeweltone Production's Liz Reid mixed audio and interviewed guests. Portions of this podcast were recorded at Rain Cat Recording Studio in Jensen Beach, FL. Cover art was created by Mick Fisher, with assistance from Creative Citizen Studios. George Casselberry and Jane Ondrusek, from the Woodlands Foundation, provided music for this season.
