On this week's episode of Enneagram IRL, we meet with Dr. Jerome Lubbe. Dr. Jerome is referred to as the “Patient Doctor” because it was his own quest for neurological well-being that led him to specialize in complex, unresolved neurological cases. His practice explores how functional neurology, neuroplasticity, and tools like the Enneagram can improve holistic well-being. Dr. Jerome created and released the first-ever neuroscience-based model of the Enneagram in his book, The Brain-Based Enneagram. Being a functional neurologist has shown him that the healing we once thought was impossible is actually possible. Neuroplasticity tells us that we are capable of change. If we understand the function of the brain, we can improve our way of life.Grab His Book:The Brain-Based Enneagram: You are not A number by Dr. Jerome D. Lubbe

Our Creative Archetypes Series continues this week with Enneagram 2's “The Helper.” Merideth chats with author Holly Oxhandler. Holly is the Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development and an Associate Professor at Baylor University's Diana R. Garland School of Social Work. Holly studies religion/spirituality, health, and mental health, and as a studio art minor in college, she embeds creativity into every aspect of her life and work. Merideth and Holly explore how to be a helper without burning out and seeing creativity as an act of self-care and connection. Other 2 voices in the episode: piano teacher and podcaster Christina Whitlock and author/spiritual growth coach Stephanie Miller. Invitation: Put your oxygen mask on first. Write 3 pages of longhand stream of consciousness first thing upon waking. After you finish writing, step outside of yourself, re-read your pages and look for clues about what it is you need. What is one thing you could give to yourself today that you need? Be your own helper, mother, giver, or friend. Having taken care of yourself, look at those around you and ask the same question. What needs do I see? How can I serve them personally— with a phone call or a bouquet of fresh flowers— or creatively—with a handmade card or homecooked meal? Use your creativity to find connection and collaboration, to comfort yourself and others. We join Adrian (ENFP/Enneagram Two) on his emotional journey to uncover the truth behind his mother Dorothy's decision to give him up for adoption five decades earlier without informing his birth father John of her decision. Can the AI Therapist help Adrian to understand and come to terms with his mother's decision and the effect it has had on his life thus far? We also explore the "Second Dimension" of human ego functioning, the Enneagram Two, a dimension that best reflects our innate human capacity for nurturing and unconditional love. According to the neurologist Jerome Lubbe, what Two nature seeks and is motivated by is Appreciation, reinforced through a sense of being valuable and worthy. Two shadow creeps in though as a response to inattention and criticism. Other archetypal Twos we all know and love (apart from Adrian and my mother) include Hagrid and Molly Weasley in the Harry Potter universe, Mary Poppins, as well as Dorothy (in the wizard of Oz), Dr Watson, the Buddha's Ananda, King David of the Old Testament, Martha and Mary Magdalene of the New. This week, we talk with Dr. Jerome Lubbe, an expert in shifting from health care to human care, and a man with a bio so fascinating you have to hear it for yourself. This week Benj Miller and Dr. Jerome talk about what it really means to be taken care of, how business leaders can effectively take care of the people they serve in a way that builds healthy culture, and how to do all this without compromising self-care and family life. This is certainly a conversation for the books! This episode is sponsored by The 261. Start your day with clarity! As leaders, we have countless things on our mind: things we need to do, things we're not doing, problems we need to solve, new exciting ideas––all jotted down in that worn out mental notebook we keep in our heads. But, sometimes leaders and entrepreneurs simply need to step away from the mental clutter––sometimes we don't need the notebook, we just need a sticky note––a simple reminder along the way to help us gain clarity and control of our business. That's why we created a new FREE resource called The 261. As you may know, there are 261 work days in the calendar year. So, we have mapped out the entire year with daily micro thoughts and micro actions––sticky notes––to help keep the ball moving forward in your personal life as a leader and for the sake of your business. Imagine if you dealt with a debilitating migraine every day of your life and doctors didn't have the right answers to help you heal. What would you do? How would you cope? Dr. Jerome Lubbe experienced this firsthand before becoming a functional neurologist and working to improve people's well-being. The brain is a complex system, and sometimes the answers to our suffering aren't easy to come by. On this episode of God Hears Her, hosts Elisa Morgan and Eryn Eddy talk to Dr. Jerome Lubbe about the brain and the pain a lot of us face.   About Our Guest: Dr. Jerome is a functional neurologist who knows that healing is possible, even when it feels impossible, because of the brain's ability to reorganize itself and create new connections. He specializes in complex and unresolved neurological cases because he knows what it's like to have an undiagnosed issue as he suffered from migraines without any answers for years! His practice also explores how functional neurology, neuroplasticity, and tools like the Enneagram can improve our well-being. In this episode, Dr. Jerome Lubbe unpacks a radical new lens on the Enneagram from the vantage point of Neuroscience. As a functional neurologist who's worked with complex trauma patients over the last decade, Jerome shares his personal story as well as explains why we need to move away from thinking of ourselves as a certain number on the Enneagram to seeing ourself as a whole person with various efficiencies. Later in the conversation, Jerome gives a breakdown of each number and it's basic desire or motivation. Today we have the distinct honor of celebrating our 50TH EPISODE with Dr. Jerome Lubbe, the ONLY board certified functional neurologist in Atlanta.  Dr. Jerome specializes in complex, unresolved cases, and in general, teaches people how to use and strengthen their brain. Additionally, he is the author of Whole-Identity: A Brain-Based Enneagram Model for (W)holistic Human Thriving. Dr. Jerome gets really vulnerable with us about why he became a doctor after being a patient for 20 years and suffering debilitating migraines during that time and still today. He shares that his goal is to help find everyone some sort of improvement in their pain. We talk about how to remain hopeful, even when in terrible pain, and we ask him to explain in detail how our brains deal with fear. We discuss the difference in self-care and self-help, and, OF COURSE, we get his fascinating take on his own interpretation of the Enneagram and why none of us are just ONE type.
