Ever since he was a young child—when he first realized he was one day going to die—Matthew Alper set himself upon a life quest to ascertain whether or not there exists a spiritual reality, a God. Was he merely a flesh and bone mortal or something more, something that perhaps transcended his purely physical being? After receiving a BA in Philosophy, Matthew continued his unconventional journey working as everything from a photographer's assistant in NYC, an electrician in England, a 5th grade and High School history teacher in Brooklyn, a truck smuggler in Central Africa, and a produced screenwriter in Germany—all the while independently studying the breadth of the life sciences from genetics, biology, anthropology, behavioral neuroscience and more. Once his research yielded what he felt constituted a valid scientific explanation of human spirituality, he wrote, “The ‘God' Part of the Brain.” Since its initial publication in 1997, Matthew has lectured all over the United States, appeared on NBC tv, been written up in the Washington Post, appeared on numerous radio shows and is a contributor to the anthology "Neurotheology"—an emergent new science of which he is considered one of its chief founders. An outspoken member of the atheist and secular humanist movements, Matthew presently lives in Brooklyn.Contact: MatthewAlper1@aol.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.

Has contemporary neuroscience made the idea of a 'soul' irrelevant and obsolete? What even is the soul and how does it relate to our human identity and flourishing? Stan Wallace recently wrote a book entitled, Have We Lost Our Minds? Neuroscience, Neurotheology, the Soul, and Human Flourishing and identifies and corrects the wrong assumptions of neurotheologians. Stan outlines a biblically and philosophically sound understanding of our soul and its relation to the body, and illustrates how this understanding is the right path toward more fully loving God, loving others, and flourishing. Listen in as Dr. Jeff and Stan discuss this fascinating topic and more.  Truth Changes Everything was formally known as the Dr. Jeff Show. Why do universities require students to take classes in the humanities during their first few years? Dr. David Horner, who has taught these classes for many years, helps us see the wisdom of requiring these courses, in light of the value they bring to the student who takes them seriously. Dave earned his master's and doctoral degrees in philosophy at Oxford University, is a professor of philosophy at Talbot School of Theology, and is the author of (among other books) the popular Mind Your Faith: A Student's Guide to Thinking and Living Well. As pastors and ministry leaders, why is a thorough understanding of the body, mind, and soul so vital as we minister in a rapidly shifting world? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Dr. Stan Wallace. Stan is the president and CEO of Global Scholars. He travels the world, writing and speaking on issues of apologetics, ethics, and Christian thought. His most recent book is entitled Have We Lost Our Minds?: Neuroscience, Neurotheology, the Soul, and Human Flourishing. Together, Stan and Jason explore concepts around the brain, the mind, and the soul. Stan shares the dangers of some of the extremes in these conversations and helps point us to a healthy middle way that resonates with biblical truth. Now I want to encourage you to hang with us in this conversation because Stan has to explain some deep concepts, but in the second half of the conversation, Stan really helps us understand the implications of all of this when it comes to ministering and serving in the world we live in today.Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more, at http://PastorServe.org/networkSome key takeaways from this conversation:Stan Wallace on the existence of an internal, tangible aspect of human nature: "Scripture is really clear that we have an inner material dimension."Stan Wallace on the importance of the soul as the fundamental essence that brings coherence and unity to the various aspects of our being: "The soul is the thing that stands under and unifies all those other things that make us, us."Stan Wallace on the deep interconnection between the soul and the body: "God created our souls to be able to structure a body "around" itself, not physically, of course, but around itself, so that it can actually engage in the world in ways that it flourishes."----------------Looking to dig more deeply into this topic and conversation? Is spirituality something people are predisposed to experiencing? Do your genetics make a difference? What external forces are at play that might cause someone to become more spiritual? Spiritual awakenings are a common topic in the spiritual community, but not often something that we dissect and explore in-depth. This is the first installment of our three-part series (well...we think it'll be three parts) where we'll explore how and why spiritual awakenings occur. In this first episode, we share stories about our own spiritual awakenings and discuss common ways people seem to experience them. We preview some larger topics that we'll further dive into for parts two and three in this series, and we also invite listeners to write in with their own spiritual awakening stories so we can share them in a future episode as part of this series! SPONSORSHIPRyan Hagan, our guest for episode 5, has officially launched his newest 12-week self-paced program: The Hagan Method! An outspoken member of the atheist and secular humanist movements, Matthew presently lives in Brooklyn.Contact: MatthewAlper1@aol.com

Join us for an insightful chat with Dr. Cristina Leira, an extraordinary individual with a profound passion for bridging the gap between science and spirituality. Cristina walks us through the unique characteristics of science, spirituality, and religion, offering a holistic perspective that could enhance your understanding of these distinct yet interconnected fields. We unravel how science provides a methodical, evidence-based approach to knowledge, while spirituality represents an individual's unmeasurable experience of life.   We then turn our focus to the crossroads of spiritual practices and mental health, exploring how rituals such as meditation, prayer, and contemplation can help reduce stress and mind wandering, and alter consciousness states. Dr. Leira paints a fascinating picture of how advancements in neuroscience can trace the neurochemical changes linked to these spiritual practices, thus improving mental health outcomes. We also discuss the importance of finding a practice that suits your individual needs and proves helpful during times of distress.   We further explore how neuroscience and technology allow us to comprehend the intricate cognitive and emotional processes involved in spiritual experiences. Dr. Leira talks about the effects of these mystical experiences, such as dissolving the illusion of 'self', and the potential drawbacks of attempting to bridge science and spirituality. Listen in as we discuss whether it's possible to measure what we believe and how we can integrate science and spirituality into our lives. This enlightening episode is not to be missed!   Listen to this episode to discover: 1. How to cultivate spiritual practices like meditation, prayer and journaling to build resilience and better regulate emotions, especially during times of crisis. 2. How to gain a more holistic understanding by exploring the connections between neuroscience and spiritual experiences. 3. We're back with Curt Thompson, MD, to talk about hope. Have you ever wondered how to summon hope when everything seems bleak? Is hope a fleeting notion or something we can truly cultivate? Hope, like faith and love, is not just an abstraction, but a skill we can nurture. It's a profound practice that finds its home in both our minds and bodies. Curt shares: “The things that I pay attention to on purpose, I remember. And what I remember becomes my anticipated future. Hope is a function of the mind that addresses the future. And this is what I mean when I say hope is a thing that I form by paying attention to the glory that is offered to me in the middle of my pain, in the present moment. And it requires lots and lots of practice, but it then is not like, ‘Oh, maybe I'll have hope. I hope I have hope.' It's a thing that I maybe I won't like. And so… I'm going to have to practice.”    We thrive on shared experiences of hope within a community. Even a brief 3-minute interaction can spark the daring prospect of relying on another person. Our communal practice etches hope into our brain's pathways, grounding it in the way we engage with one another. Although personal introspection has its place, the true growth of hope blossoms within the context of human connection. Tune in to this thought-provoking dialogue as we explore the intricacies of cultivating hope and the transformative power of embracing it together. Curt skillfully guides us through a journey into the roots of shame within the human experience. He explores its emergence even before the infamous act of consuming the forbidden fruit, noting that the serpent's temptation, often overlooked as an act of violence, effectively exploits and manipulates shame. This manipulation resonates through time, manifesting in ways that disconnect individuals from one another and create internal divides, subsequently impacting personal unity and relationships. Joined by co-hosts Dr. Dan Allender and Rachael Clinton Chen, this conversation unfolds at the crossroads of theology, neuroscience, and the intricate tapestry of the human experience. We think you'll encounter at least a few thought-provoking concepts that you may not have considered before – we certainly did! And there's still more to come. Could DMT induce spiritual beliefs by activating a pre-existing disposition latent in the human mind? We examine this possibility in the astonishing conclusion to our exploration of why some people believe that the entities encountered while using the psychedelic DMT are real. After recapping previous coverage of DMT-induced spiritual belief, this episode pivots to examine traditionally religious people - Christians, Jews and Muslim - who are fundamentalists about DMT entities. Many of these people have not, and never will, experiment with psychedelics, but have nevertheless found a place within their conceptual schemas for admitting the reality of DMT entities as angels, demons or djinn. The episode then turns to the work of Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Rick Strassman. Strassman, who converted to Judaism as a result of his research and experimentation with DMT, makes the case for 'neurotheology' - the existence of a distinct neurological circuit inside the human brain that facilitates prophetic encounters. This episode ranges over modern Egypt, the rantings of Alex Jones, and the bizarre angelic manifestations in the Hebrew bible, to build the case that DMT spirituality may be an extreme manifestation of something deeply embedded inside the human psyche.

Juni Felix harnessed her past hurt to help others in their own healing. Raised in a broken home and forced to take on more than a child should to keep her family afloat, Juni felt far away from the God of the universe. When a co-worker gave her a Bible, she started to see that God is big enough for her trauma, and was there all along. On this week's episode of One80, you'll hear her incredible story of transformation. As God and others walked with her through trauma recovery, she started to make connections between the God of the Bible and the human brain, using neuroscience to help others through trauma. Juni is a national speaker, national radio personality and national best-selling author of You Are Worth the Work.
