In this episode of the show, Baldy and Stu look back at the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, which was played at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad between the Black Caps of New Zealand and the 2024 champions India. We start with our instant reactions to India's dominant performance that made them the first team to win back-to-back titles at the Men's T20 World Cup. It's a tough one as Black Caps fans, but all credit to India for the way they played without fear in three crucial matches to finish the tournament and go all the way. There's praise for Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan at the top of the order, as we wonder what - if anything - the Black Caps could have done to stop the Indian batting blitz. For New Zealand there was a brief moment of joy when Jimmy Neesham grabbed three wickets in an over, but Shivam Dube's flurry to finish meant the home side took all the momentum into the innings break. Tim Seifert made a nice start, but once Axar Patel struck with the key wickets of Finn Allen and then Glenn Phillips, it was always going to be tough work for the Kiwis. Jasprit Bumrah finished with 4-15 to claim the player of the match, while Sanju Samson was named player of the tournament. So there we have it - a month of high-quality cricket and plenty of fun for us on the show. New Zealand hearts broken again and India well deserved back-to-back champions in this edition of the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. The T20 World Cup final awaits but the real question is - should this tournament continue to be staged every two years?! Sure, there's a Finn Allen century to marvel at and a Jacob Bethell performance to savour, but what is the care factor here in Australia. So as well as ponder whether New Zealand might be set for their all time cricketing moment against a red hot India on home soil, Corbin and Ed debate if Australian cricket fans care about a trophy that comes around every five minutes. And more broadly, will the Aussie obsession for test cricket ever translate to similar fandom for the T20 variety beyond the four months over Summer. There's plenty more on the agenda too including an intriguing Sheffield Shield round on right now with Travis Head and Matthew Renshaw opening for their states, Adam Zampa hasn't been being retained by the Renegades and Pakistan players being fined for their sub par World Cup.ABC Grandstand cricket commentator Corbin Middlemas is joined by Ed Cowan to bring you all the highlights and match analysis to keep you up to speed. In this episode of the show, Binksy and Stu look back at Day 21 of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, which was a crucial day for Group 2 in the Super 8s, as the Black Caps of New Zealand took on England in Colombo. We start the show with pure emotion, as the boys react to the late drama that saw England snatch victory with three balls to spare. The Black Caps did a lot right throughout the course of the game, with Finn Allen and Tim Seifert setting a strong platform, Glenn Phillips looking good with the bat, but when Adil Rashid bamboozled Mark Chapman first ball after drinks, momentum swung back to England. With the ball in hand, it was a brilliant start from Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson as England lost two wickets inside the first two overs. But contributions from the middle order left England within striking distance, and boy did Rehan Ahmed and Will Jacks strike. The 18th over, bowled by Glenn Phillips, proved crucial, as the pair added 22 to the score and then finished the job with three balls to spare. The result confirms England's spot as top qualifier from the group, while the Black Caps have a nervous 24 hours to wait to see if they're flying back to India or home to New Zealand. To round out the show, the boys look ahead to the final Group 2 game, between Pakistan and the hosts Sri Lanka. In this episode of the show, Raj and Stu look back at Day 8 of the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup, which featured three games: Ireland v Oman, England v Scotland and New Zealand v South Africa. We start the show by discussing the Black Caps' top of the table clash against South Africa, which unfortunately didn't go the way the New Zealanders were hoping. Tim Seifert and Finn Allen raced out of the gates, and Mark Chapman & Daryl Mitchell rebuilt the innings, but a stuttered finish left them short of a par score. And from the moment the ball hit Aiden Markram's bat, South Africa looked completely in control. We talk about the Black Caps' bowling struggles, possibly not giving Markram's brilliance enough credit as we search for answers to the powerplay problems. In the second match of the day, England took on Scotland, who built a nice platform thanks to a strong partnership between Richie Berrington & Tom Bruce, before a flurry of wickets from Liam Dawson & Adil Rashid put the brakes on. With the bat, England weren't exactly commanding, but a Tom Banton half-century led them across the line and left them well-placed for a Super 8 spot. Ireland began Day 8 of this World Cup batting like a side with nothing to lose, looking to set the tone early against an Oman team also searching for their first victory. Unfortunately for them, wickets fell as Oman's spinners found a nice length, until a lifeline for Lorcan Tucker on 18 completely flipped the game. To round out the show, the boys look ahead to Day 9, which sees Nepal face the West Indies, Namibia v USA and the blockbuster of all blockbusters between India and Pakistan in Group A.   We'll be back in your feed again tomorrow with the next instalment of our T20 World Cup coverage. In this episode of the show, Binksy and Stu look back at Day 4 of the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup, which featured three games: Netherlands v Namibia, New Zealand v UAE and Pakistan v USA.   We start the show by discussing the Black Caps' win against the UAE, which saw them power home thanks to a record-breaking partnership between Tim Seifert & Finn Allen. We talk about playing smart, bowling rotations, Alishan & Waseem's 100-run partnership and the impact of Michael Bracewell's injury news. The first game of the day saw the Netherlands bounce back from their tough loss to Pakistan with a fairly comfortable win against Namibia. There were missed chances early, but Aryan Dutt and Logan van Beek were impressive with the ball, then Bas de Leede produced an all-round masterclass to ice the game and get the Dutch back on track. Next we move on to Pakistan's victory against the USA, which edges them one step closer to the Super 8s. There were runs for Farhan and Babar, then wickets for the spinners to restrict the USA. Despite the loss for the USA, there's praise for Shadley van Schalkwyk and the batting of Ranjane & Jahangir, plus Shadab Khan's impact for Pakistan. In this episode of the show, Binksy, Baldy, Raj and Stu preview the Men's ICC T20 Cricket World Cup 2026. We discuss the key contenders from each group and the questions facing their sides, then make predictions about how the tournament will play out. We start the show with a quick tournament explainer, before moving on to Group A, which features India, Pakistan, Namibia, Netherlands and the USA. The home side comes into the tournament in great form, with runs flowing from the bats of Abhishek Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav & Ishan Kishan, and the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakravarthy with the ball. Pakistan have dealt comfortably with Australia in their most recent games, but will they ever shake their 'mercurial' tag in big ICC events? And can the Kiwi connection help the Netherlands to the Super 8s? Or will the USA be a surprise packet yet again? Group B is home to Sri Lanka, Australia, Ireland, Oman and Zimbabwe, and could be a bit tougher for batters. Pat Cummins is out for the Aussies and Steve Smith wasn't selected, but can Ashes hero Travis Head power them to another title? On paper the Sri Lankan lineup looks a lot of fun, but will playing at home help or hinder their chances? And can Ireland, Zimbabwe or Oman throw a spanner in the works? As the episode continues, we turn our lens towards England's chances in Group C, which also includes the West Indies, Italy, Nepal and Scotland. With Phil Salt, Jos Buttler, Harry Brook, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer & co., England have plenty of matchwinners - but how many matches will they actually win? The West Indies have power players like Romario Shepherd and Rovman Powell in the lower order, but will the top order set a good enough platform? And will Tom Bruce's Scotland give us a classic World Cup moment? Or will it be the new boys Italy and Nepal? The final group could very well be the most closely fought, with New Zealand's Black Caps, South Africa and Afghanistan battling for two Super 8 spots along with Canada and the UAE. For New Zealand, the batters look in fine touch, with recent runs for Finn Allen, Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell, but will it matter if the bowlers can't keep going the distance? South Africa pushed India hard in the 2024 final, and with Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock leading the charge, will they go one better this time around? And you'd be brave to write off any side with Rashid Khan, an opening partnership of Ibrahim & Gurbaz, but the real question is - will Gulbadin fall over again? To round out the show, we make our predictions - semi-finalists, winners, top runscorer, top wicket-taker and some bold predictions that may or may not make us look silly in a month's time. We'll be back in your feed again regularly once the tournament starts - potentially with daily recaps from Day 1. In this episode of the show, Binksy, Baldy and Stu chat about the Black Caps' white-ball series in India, the vibes in the England camp over in Sri Lanka, discuss some future stars at the ICC Under-19 World Cup and finish things off with a big announcement! We start the show by talking about the Black Caps' white-ball tour to India, which at the time of recording was two games into the T20 series. There's been runs for Glenn Phillips and Suryakumar Yadav, along with a host of other players, and we discuss the challenge for bowlers in the powerplay on batter-friendly pitches. [Note there's a brief moment where we lost some audio, so at one point Stu goes from talking about Mark Chapman to highlighting Finn Allen, around the 22:30 mark after the second of silence.] As the episode continues, we turn our lens towards England to see how the mood is over in Sri Lanka a few weeks removed from the disappointment of the Ashes. The conversation inevitably turns to Brendon McCullum's future in the coaching role, and whether the T20 World Cup could be the end of his England tenure. To round out the show, we talk about ICC Under-19 World Cup, which has seen a lot of rain for New Zealand, but impressive performances for both Australia and England. Baldy and Binksy take us through a few names to watch, before there's an announcement about upcoming content from the team in the coming months. Finn Allen has had a superb Big Bash campaign with the Perth Scorchers. He's the competition's second highest run scorer with a total of 430, just three runs behind former Australian opener David Warner. His form has helped the Scorchers into tomorrow's Grand Final in Perth and seen him named in the Team of the Tournament. Allen told Piney it's nice to see the work he's been putting in in the lead up to the tournament pan out. He's also hit a record number of sixes in the tournament, a feat he wasn't aiming for, nor was he aware of until he was told. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of the show, it's a heavy New Zealand focus as Baldy, Raj and Stu discuss the Black Caps' white-ball series in India, New Zealand's T20 World Cup squad and the potential for the NZ20 - a proposed privately-backed T20 franchise league to replace the Super Smash. We start the show by talking about the Black Caps' white-ball tour to India, which at the time of recording was only two games into the ODI series. At the risk of getting too far ahead of ourselves, we talk about Daryl Mitchell's fantastic form, the additional craft Kyle Jamieson seems to have added to his game and the two debutants, Jayden Lennox and Kristian Clarke. As the episode continues, we turn our lens towards New Zealand's T20 World Cup squad. Were Tim Robinson and Bevon Jacobs unlucky to miss out? What role might Jimmy Neesham play? Should Tim Seifert & Finn Allen be over in India rather than at the BBL? How much will newborn babies impact the seam-bowling rotation? And more! To round out the show, we talk about the NZ20 - a proposed franchise T20 competition that could start as early as January 2027. Is it a good idea? Will it be good for players? Good for fans? Good for New Zealand cricket pathways? We'd love to hear what you think, as the details are still thin on the ground at this early stage. We'll be back in your feed again soon with more from the cricketing world, including the Black Caps' white-ball series in India and the lead-in to the T20 World Cup. Don Mackinnon: Sports lawyer on the push for New Zealand to have a T20 franchise league

The Devlin Radio Show

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 21, 2025 17:33 Transcription Available

The time is right for New Zealand to join the rest of the world with a privately-backed, franchise Twenty20 league. That's the message from Don Mackinnon, the man standing at the front of the group looking to achieve just that. Some 22 years on from cricket introducing the shortest format, T20 has become the vehicle in which the sport is growing around the world. And, as is the case with sports like football and basketball, strong club-based franchise competitions have proven to be the main driver of that. Led by the Indian Premier League, established in 2008, the franchise game has slowly but surely expanded to all corners of the cricket-playing world. First to India, then England, Australia, Pakistan, the West Indies, South Africa and so on. Even non-cricketing strongholds such as the US, Canada and even Nepal have franchise domestic leagues. The only exception to that is New Zealand. Since the inception of T20 cricket, New Zealand has maintained a domestic competition made up of the six major associations – Auckland, Northern Districts, Wellington, Central Districts, Canterbury and Otago – known as the Super Smash. However, the lack of any franchise-style model has left the Super Smash outdated. Instead of operating as NZ Cricket's (NZC) main driver of revenue, the Super Smash instead operates as a breeding ground for local talent, allowing Kiwi players to develop and step into the Black Caps and White Ferns respectively. And while that might be beneficial for New Zealand's national sides, the Super Smash being left off Sky's new cricket broadcast deal from the start of next summer shows the model, as it stands, is broken. But, led by Mackinnon, a consortium that includes former Black Caps captain Stephen Fleming and NZ Cricket Players' Association boss Heath Mills wants to take New Zealand into the franchise world. The proposed “NZ20″ would involve teams created by the major associations being sold to private owners, and establish a league to be played at the height of the Kiwi summer in January, as early as the start of 2027. It would also provide parity to what has been shown to work around the world. While the format is still to be finalised, the NZ20 would theoretically be a Kiwi-based league providing New Zealand's players the opportunity to play a franchise competition at home. As and when a format is decided, and agreed to by NZ Cricket, the major associations and the players' association, the NZ20 would revolutionise the sport in Aotearoa. Speaking to Weekend Sport with Jason Pine, Mackinnon – the chairman of the NZ20 Establishing Committee – explained that while similar attempts to implement a franchise league in New Zealand haven't materialised, the state of the sport in 2025 has changed that equation. “If we go back a decade, I was on the board of NZ Cricket,” he said. “We looked at setting up a franchise league back in 2013-14. “At the time we didn't think it was viable. But as one highly respected figure put to me, there's never been more money in the international game of cricket at the moment. “So many people around the world are excited by it and investing in it, but New Zealand is not part of that. “I just think the time is right to tweak that model and create something in our domestic league that fans are excited by. The money is there, the interest is there. The timing is perfect.” Naturally, with this kind of expansion, falsehoods have materialised. For a start, Mackinnon dismisses any notion the NZ20 is a “rebel league”, as suggested when first reported. Mackinnon concedes “it would be crazy to do this without the support of NZC”. Earlier this year, the NZ20 Establishing Committee presented the concept to NZC. In turn, two members of the NZC board are also part of the Establishing Committee, at a time when the governing body assesses multiple options as to how to revolutionise the shortest format here. Mackinnon also points out that what the NZ20 intends to do isn't new. Cricketing nations across the globe have implemented the same models, where privately-backed franchises co-exist with national boards to allow T20 to operate as the centrepiece of the domestic season. Those models have provided the blueprint for the NZ20 Establishing Committee to take on board. “What we're looking to do here is not novel,” Mackinnon said. “In actual fact, it's done all around the world. “The better question might be ‘why aren't we?' The South African league, for example, has gone from loss-making to extraordinarily successful. The Caribbean league has done exactly the same. “The Caribbean league is probably the model we've mostly looked at as replicating, in part. It's a relatively small economy, a relatively small talent pool. And yet it is reinvigorating the game in the Caribbean. “Will it be here in 30 years' time? I don't know. But the model is certainly doing great things for the game at the moment. There is absolutely no reason why we can't do it here.” What's more, there is also evidence of Mackinnon's suggestion of franchises having stakes controlled by the major associations, while selling ownership to investors. For example, England's “The Hundred” competition initially involved its franchises being co-owned by the English county cricket sides. However, when put to tender earlier in 2025, hundreds of millions of pounds were raised for the counties to use as they saw fit, including investing in the grassroots. The biggest potential worry for the NZ20 – if successful – is the window in which it would operate. If Mackinnon's suggestion of January eventuates, the NZ20 would clash with Australia's Big Bash League, South Africa's SA20 and the UAE's ILT20. The SA20 and ILT20 are both owned by Indian private equity, while the Big Bash League is almost certain to follow a similar path in seeking outside investment. Naturally, then, that would leave the NZ20 competing for talent, be it local or international. For Mackinnon, though, the priority is ensuring the competition is primarily an outlet for New Zealanders. “We're really conscious of that,” he said. “The first thing is we want to make sure our very best players are playing in it. “Heath [Mills] has been talking a lot to the Daryl Mitchells of this world, the Kane Williamsons – our best players. They are incredibly excited about this as a concept. “First and foremost, you're going to have a young kid playing for Otago, bowling to Finn Allen for example. That's got to be good for the game in New Zealand. “There's an awful lot of really good white ball cricketers playing around the world, not all of them can play in South Africa and Australia. “I have no doubt that there would be the opportunity to supplement squads. They would still be very good, exciting players that would put bums on seats.” However, the NZ20 isn't the only option on the table for NZC. The national body is also undertaking a review, led by Deloitte, to determine which direction it should move in. While a similar, privately-backed franchise model is also on the table – separate from the NZ20 – the biggest potential rival would be for the NZC to seek having at least one side join Australia's Big Bash. While that would mean New Zealand and Australia joining forces – as seen with the Warriors in the NRL, the Breakers in the NBL and Auckland FC and the Wellington Phoenix in the A-League – it would also mean NZC has less influence on how the team could be run. Regardless, Mackinnon, said that while the NZ20 Establishing Committee believes it has the best way forward, it ultimately wants to see what's best for the sport – even if it means NZC moves in another direction. “I'll be the first to applaud NZ Cricket for looking at all of their options, they're doing the right thing,” he said. “If they say that's better for cricket in New Zealand, we will live with that and I will wish that project every success. “It seems to me a competition that's played throughout New Zealand, ideally at holiday venues at the peak of summer, with some of our best players playing, some great international players is better for fans, it's better for players, it's better for our regions, and personally I think it's better for our Black Cap and White Ferns development programmes. “But that's just our opinion. I fully accept that NZ Cricket are looking at all their options – as they should.” LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of the show, Baldy, Raj and Stu look back at the cricketing week that was, which saw NZ in T20 action against the West Indies, India win the Women's World Cup and Australia name their squad for the first Ashes Test. We also look ahead to an intriguing Test series between India and South Africa. We start the show by congratulating India on their Women's World Cup win, before moving back to New Zealand where the Black Caps are 2-1 up in their T20 series against the West Indies. There's praise for Matthew Forde, Ish Sodhi and Mark Chapman, plus questions about NZ's death bowling and what the T20 World Cup squad might look like if - and it's looking like a bigger 'if' with each passing day - injured players like Glenn Phillips, Finn Allen, Will O'Rourke and Lockie Ferguson do return. Next we head to India, where Rishabh Pant returns for the home side as they prepare to take on South Africa in what shapes to be the toughest challenge to date for the current World Test Champions. Can Pant and Dhruv Jurel play in the same XI? Is Keshav Maharaj the best spinner in the world? And will India simply be too strong on home soil? We round out the show with the latest Ashes news, which mainly involves asking Baldy his thoughts on the Australian squad for the first Test. We start the show by talking about India's dominant performance against Pakistan in the Asia Cup group stage. We talk about India's depth and the balance that their two brilliant allrounders - Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel - provide, as well as the impressive contributions of the likes of Kuldeep Yadav, Abhishek Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav. Saim Ayub's bowling was a bright spot for Pakistan in what was otherwise a tough day at the office for Mike Hesson's side. Next we move to the final stages of the English home summer to discuss a damp end to the white-ball series against South Africa, which saw a return to form for England's batters in between the rain. After scores of 400 in an ODI then 300 in a T20, it wasn't hard to hand out praise, with Phil Salt and Jacob Bethell in particular our topics of conversation. We also look back at a full international summer from Jofra Archer and try to make sense of a very full domestic calendar. In this episode of the show, Baldy, Stu and Jamie look back at Australia's 'comfortable' win against the West Indies, discuss selection questions facing India and England for the second Test of their series, plus a short conversation about the Black Caps T20 squad for the tri-series also involving South Africa and Zimbabwe. We start the show by talking through Australia's win against the West Indies, which saw the visitors bat first and concede a first innings lead but still come away with a comfortable victory on the scorecard at least. To no one's surprise, there are conversations about Australia's top order once again, with Sam Konstas and Cameron Green in the spotlight, plus dropped catches, praise for the likes of Jayden Seales, Josh Hazlewood and Shamar Joseph across both bowling attacks, and also some DRS controversy that certainly bothered Roston Chase. In the second segment, we look ahead to the second Test between England and India at Edgbaston, mainly with an eye to selection. Jofra Archer has joined the England squad - will he play? And should he? Whereas India have a few questions to answer, particularly in the bowling department. Does England's win in the first Test mean Jasprit Bumrah needs to play the second? Do India need to be braver in their selection? What do they do with the 4th bowling option/number 8 - Shardul Thakur? Nitish Kumar Reddy? Kuldeep Yadav? Arshdeep Singh? To round out the show we briefly discuss the Black Caps T20 squad to face Zimbabwe and South Africa in the upcoming tri-series, which looks to favour an explosive top order of Finn Allen and Tim Seifert, and has no room in it for Devon Conway or Mitch Hay. This week on the show, Binksy, Jamie, Baldy and Stu felt like bouncing around a few topics in the aftermath of the Champions Trophy before the news cycle is dominated by the IPL. There's a bit of ODI format chat, then a quick check-in on the teams we support - Australia, England and New Zealand. The episode starts with a discussion about the Champions Trophy format and ODI cricket in general. Did the tournament make a convincing case that there's still life left in 50-over cricket? Or are ODIs too formulaic? If the number of bilateral ODIs are declining, is that a problem? Or does it make these tournaments more exciting? Was the jeopardy of knockout cricket something the World Cup should consider? Or is a longer tournament still the best way to find out who the best team in the world is? We round out the show by touching base in Australia to wonder whether any of the fringe players did enough to force their way into best XIs when Cummins, Hazlewood and co. return? Then in England to ponder on the white-ball captaincy after Jos Buttler decided to step down. And we finish by looking at New Zealand's home series against Pakistan, which saw the return of some familiar names in Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, Jimmy Neesham and Ish Sodhi, but it was Kyle Jamieson who stole the show in the first T20 as the Black Caps powered to an emphatic win. In this episode of the show, Stu and Baldy discuss the Black Caps test squad to face Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, plus the contractual situation facing NZC now that Devon Conway and Finn Allen have stepped away from the security of a central contract. We also look back at the quality bowling on show in South Africa's series win against the West Indies, as well as the impact of Ben Stokes's injury on the upcoming England v Sri Lanka series. We begin with a conversation about the potential dilemma facing New Zealand Cricket with the continued rise of franchise tournaments and their clash with the NZ home summer. Devon Conway has moved to a casual contract, Finn Allen has opted to play for the Perth Scorchers – but is it actually a dilemma? We then move to the West Indies where South Africa secured a valuable series win to keep their World Test Championship chances alive. There's praise for Jayden Seales and Keshav Maharaj in particular, and we wonder whether the Proteas will regret not sending a full strength team to New Zealand in 2023. To round out the show, we look ahead to the upcoming England v Sri Lanka series, which will see Ollie Pope captain the home side following a hamstring injury that will keep him out of the rest of the summer. Who will replace Stokes in the starting XI? Will England's style change at all? And can Sri Lanka pose any problems or will this be another straight sets win?
