Lorri Francis was there. She doesn't remember a lot of it, but she WAS there. On this episode we talk to one of Chicago's great movers and shakers and connectors about Medusa's, the Rock Room, Cubby Bear, Double Door, G.G. Allin's chair upholstery, Rights Of The Accused, Death Angel, Gabe's tattoo, the P.P.P., whippets, the continuing saga of Zoetrope, Mark Stephens, Tom Popp, Joe Shanahan, Wrigleyville Tap, The Rolling Stones, Richard Ashcroft, D.D. Halloween shows, Nirvana hatred, and Jesus Christ LIFE MOVES FAST!!! As usual, we had a great time catching up (and trying to KEEP up) with the great Lorri Francis. We love you!

Joe and Lori talk the election results and how music and the Nov 22nd party at Metro will empower our House Music Community. Joe Shanahan began his journey in artistic propriety as a Columbia College graduate with a keen ear for the underground music shaking Chicago's musical core. Shanahan spent his post-collegiate years trekking to New York and London to experience the happenings redefining the global arts community. He returned with an “act local, think global” business philosophy and an urge to fill the void in his home city's art scene. Shanahan began throwing fringe gatherings in his loft, but soon the crowds, and his ambition, grew too large for the space. On the eve of a certain very invasive medical procedure for Scott (see episode 54), the guys try to get a little invasive with Metro owner Joe Shanahan. A task that proves to be near impossible, as Joe —writhing and squirming like a goldfish— deflects questions at every turn and attempts to transform the interview into something resembling an episode of “This Is Your Life” for Scott. Crafty. But that's okay — the few times we were able to pin Mr. Shanahan down, we got him to talk about running the best music venue in the world, hanging out at the Hacienda, booking R.E.M., the days (or nights) when Smart Bar was on the 4th floor, helping Dave Grohl get a new drum set, pipelines to Minnesota, the best pizza in Chicago, smoking pot with the Clash, and why love means never having to say “I told you so”. This episode is sponsored by CLENPIQ.
Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament once stated that "essentially Ten was just an excuse to tour." The band clearly just wanted some material to play on the road, as their first tour kicked off just after they'd completed mixing sessions for their debut album; the record wasn't even released yet. The tour -- PJ's only with drummer Matt Chamberlain -- was a short one focusing on the East Coast and Midwest. It wrapped up in Chicago at the famed Cabaret Metro with a concert that is still legendary among Pearl Jam fans. After that Metro gig on July 21st, 1991, the band took a break as they prepared for the release of Ten. The album arrived a month later on August 27th, and by September, Pearl Jam returned for a world tour as one of the newly crowned kings of '90s rock. In this episode of Consequence Podcast Network and Sony's The Opus: Ten, we go back to The Metro to relive that final show of Pearl Jam's first tour so we can see a band on the brink of decades-long stardom. Joining host Jill Hopkins on this trip back in time is none other than The Metro's founder, Joe Shanahan. Subscribe now to stay up-to-date on future seasons of The Opus. Also, make sure to support our show and the Consequence Podcast Network by picking up an official Opus hoodie or T-shirt at the Consequence Shop.
In Chicago, many venues received their federal grant money after months of delay from the Small Business Administration. We speak with two venue owners, Joe Shanahan of the Metro and Katie Tuten of the Hideout, for an update on Chicago venues. And, as the Taliban allows some Americans to leave Afghanistan, the picture is far less clear for Afghans who served the U.S. military as interpreters, drivers and partners. U.S. Army veteran Robert Couture, who served two tours in Afghanistan, joins us to discuss.

"Scar tissue is stronger than regular tissue. Realize the strength, move on." - Henry Rollins General Admission is back with a new season! We've got so much planned for you guys so get those headphone ready, subscribe and share. For our first official episode back Don sits down with singer and storytelling powerhouse Henry Rollins and Chicago rock venue legend Joe Shanahan. Shanahan is the owner of Metro, a venue anchored within the Chicago music scene. In this episode you'll hear a discussion surrounding the relationship between bands and the venues that house them. Henry talks how his band needed venues like The Metro in order to make enough money for a Denny's Grand Slam breakfast and gas to make it to the next gig. Places like the Metro also need the bands and musicians so they can keep the lights on. It's a symbiotic relationship. This interview is part of an ongoing series of intimate conversation to be held at the Metro and sponsored by Dark Matter Coffee and Shure.
