Almost immediately, he found himself as sideman for notable locals such as Kermit Ruffins, Michael Ward and The Reward, and Sun Ra trumpeter, Michael Ray.  In 1992 he co-founded the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars(NOKAS), a pioneering klezmer ensemble that infused that music with the vibrancy and energy of the funk, jazz and brass music of New Orleans. To date he has had opportunity to play with most of New Orleans' greatest musicians from across all genres.  NOKAS was playing some of his compositions, but by 1993 he found himself seeking outlets for his compositions in other styles and forms.  After playing with a plethora of combos and experimenting with many great local musicians he formed Naked On The Floor and eventually The Naked Orchestra. Naked on the Floor (quintet) and the Naked Orchestra (18-24 piece creative orchestra) play Freilich's original compositions exclusively and still play regularly in New Orleans. He has appeared at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival 24 times as well as headlining the Berlin Jazz Festival with NOKAS. He has appeared at numerous other festivals inside and outside the country including Bonnaroo, the Ann Arbor Jazz Festival, The American Folklife festival at the Washington Monument, collaborations with poet, Andrei Codrescu at the Holocaust museum in NYC and many others. Other notable work includes appearances with Sam Rivers, Burton Greene, Marshall Allen, The Wild Magnolias and backing songwriters such as Robbie Robertson. He has done arrangements for a wide range of recordings from, Peter Stampfel to Hal Willner's presentation of U@ doing music of T-Rex. He is featured on over 21 recordings ranging from Klezmer to Afro-Cuban and avant-garde orchestra music. Recently he put out two CD's of a large orchestra playing his original compositions, a small group, and played on Marianne Faithfull's latest release.  Many of these recordings are either Big Easy or Offbeat entertainment award winners across a number of categories.  He also has music featured in films and TV shows (Andy Richter conquers the Universe, The Dukes of Hazzard(Warner Home Video) as well as commercials for companies such as Southwest Airlines and Mercedes.    n 2016 he produced and arranged an album, NOLA? for legendary Basque artist, Fermin Muguruza. Rearrangements of Muguruza's classic work utilizing the great players and sounds of New Orleans. That led to a very successful European run for the Basque New Orleans Orchestra. Other arranging credits include Hal Wilner and U2 tribute to T. Rex and Grammy Award winner, Peter Stampfel's 100 songs of the 20th century project.      His work includes 4 completed and performed operatic works: a comic-satirical opera, Bang the Law, about a couple of New Orleans lawyers and their movements through New Orleans class detritus after Hurricane Katrina, a two movement orchestral fantasy about Elias Cannetti at carnival, formation of a new quintet to play new original compositions, an octet reduction of Peter and the Wolf for a New Orleans Contemporary Art Center/Guggenheim foundation presentation; a second opera, ee me & cummings thee which premiered in New Orleans in Nov. 2011.   2019 saw the completion of two operas. One a hyper-collaborative project with writer, Bernard Pearce, The Coronation, on the selecting of queen bees. In June 2019 he wrote an operetta on the Dirty Letters of James Joyce to Nora Barnacle, titled Darling, Please do not be offended at what I wrote.  He is the subject of the one hour radio documentary Jonathan Freilich's Freedom Double-O Naked Klezmer Jazz Latin Boogaloo: The Radio Documentary by award winning documentarian, David Kunian and was the 2008 Louisiana Governors' Music Fellowship Award recipient.  This year he figured as a Rising Star guitarist in Downbeat's Critics Poll.  Freilich was born Oct.13, 1968 in Philadelphia, Pa.  He spent most of his early years, up until a late teenager in London, England before moving to Los Angeles in 1985.  Thereafter, he moved to Santa Cruz, Ca in 1987 before the 1989 move to New Orleans.  Currently, he is residing in Los Angeles after completing further studies in composition at California Institute of the Arts. Aside from music, Freilich is also a certified Iyengar yoga instructor and co-owner of a studio in New Orleans for many years.

When you’re in a relationship, sex changes over time. Sometimes it goes from being good to being great. Other times, the fabulous person you fell in love with appears to change completely and turns into a person who is batsh*t crazy and completely unlovable.   We’re summarizing here, but this is pretty much how Andrew Duhon describes the possibility of the trajectories of love in the modern era.  The reason we’re having this conversation on Happy Hour is because Tracy Carlson is a sex therapist. It’s not every day you get  to meet a sex therapist, especially after you’ve already had a couple of drinks in the middle of the afternoon, and well, you’ve got questions, right? The good news is Tracy has answers. Jonathan Freilich raises some pretty good and searching questions about sexuality and fantasy, while he's taking some time off from making his own podcasts to drop by and say hi. Joshua Summey drops by too, from his home in San Antonio, Texas. Josh was the songwriter and singer and front-man for the band Hazy Ray and a favorite on Happy Hour when he lived in New Orleans, so the Covid-enforced Zoom format has its upside in as much as we can reconnect with people far flung across the country. Closer to home, Kimya Holmes is trapped in her apartment with her two highschool age kids, navigating distance learning and the distinction between oral, anal, and more traditional penetrative sex. It’s fascinating to find out how people are dealing with this quarantine, isn't it? On this show we opened the floodgates to talk to anyone who wanted to join and this time we did not get bombed by Russian porno trolls but we did have a couple of very nice drop-ins. Including David who is calling from his code-atorium in Birmingham Atlanta. We’ll do this open-invitation style show again next week. You can see photos from this show by Jill Lafleur on our website. Last week’s quarantine happy hour is here.

Although you could skip right to the last 10 minutes. If you did you'd miss Kandy explaining the plight of being a side-chick - a third woman in a two-person relationship - or a side-dick - a third guy in a two person relationship. Kandy also has some insights into human, and her own, sexual behavior, but not quite as radical an insight as Jonathan Freilich, Jonathan is the librettist and composer of a new operetta called Darling, Do Not Be Offended By What I Wrote, which is a faithful operatic telling of the letters James Joyce wrote to his wife, recounting in graphic detail their sexual exploits. Jonathan's opera is being staged as part of the Bloomsday celebrations in New Orleans, centered on June 16th. More info here. On May 22, 1796, while George Washington was still president, the first opera performance in America was staged here in New Orleans. These days most of us think of New Orleans music as small bands playing jazz and funk. But orchestral music has been played here continuously from that night in 1796. Today, Carlos Miguel Prieto leads a classical music orchestra, the Louisiana Philharmonic. Guitarist, composer and co founder of The New Orleans Klezmer All Stars, Jonathan Freilich is the founder and leader of The Naked Orchestra. Marie Lovejoy just got back in town from braiding hair in Minneapolis. She also braids hair at Renaissance Festivals and fairs across the country, which she did for a decade before settling down in New Orleans a few years ago. Hair braiding is, according to Marie, not as simple as it might sound it involves an exchange of energy and personal conversation which make no mistake is NOT therapy. If Marie s exchange with Grant about braiding is anything to go by, Marie would make a fabulous tough love therapist She s a talented storyteller and has some insightful tales about life on the road in the circus family style of Renaissance Fair e gypsies. Jonathan Freilich just got back in town too. Jonathan s been in California, in school studying opera. After he banged out a couple of operas in New Orleans in between his gigs with his Naked Orchestra and 40,000 other commitments from live gigging to writing TV and film scores Jonathan decided he needed to know more about what he perceives is a new trend in presenting live music in different formats. If you have any interest in the current state of the music industry as a musician or just plain music lover this conversation between Jonathan and Andrew Duhon about the state of affairs and where the music industry is headed is as informed as anything you ll find anywhere. It s not all that encouraging but once we quit talking about it and listen to some music the optimism quickly returns. Optimism is the coin of the realm over at Loco Productions, the home of film maker Russell Blanchard. Russell is a New Orleanian who has come home via Hawaii where he worked on ABC s Lost. Russell s latest project is The Lot, a movie based on the true story of the optimism of a Westbank good guy trying to improve the lives of local kids by building a park on an empty lot, who gets screwed by over zealous city officials and local thieves. It s a riveting and instructive story. The photos on this page were taken at Wayfare by the now bipedal but one eyed Douglas Engel. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He is seen playing some tuba and really tends to go very deep when he is exploring anything, but especially music. He also knows a good deal about saxophone lore and trade as well as the other end of the spectrum, analog synthesis. As he is in Trombone Shorty's band, touring constantly, he is in a unique position to discuss the current meanings and associations in the idea of New Orleans music (if there is really such a thing at all) and improvisation. His perspectives are well informed and if nothing at all show a blazing mind for inquiry and a fearless and healthy statement of opinion. He could go anywhere from here. If you were into horse racing you might see him listed in the racing form as one to watch. ...Look to the end for heated debate. Part 1- What Dan is up to now; the Roger Lewis baritone sax quartet+ bass sax; Roger, Tony, tim green, calvin johnson, shannon powell; jazzfest as a showcase for acts that aren’t playing around very much; “the guardians of the vault”; playing with Trombone Shorty and the perception of New Orleans in the world; ponderings about why Trombone Shorty is the current poster child for New Orleans music; the limitations of the idea of New Orleans music; bandleader, Trombone Shorty; Dan’s other musical lives in the past; New Orleans Jazz Orchestra and peoples’ perception of that in relation to the New Orleans music categorization; more on the liberations and restraints of being identified as a New Orleans musician; jazz in academia; musical priorities; the position of precise execution in the New Orleans instrument player’s aesthetic; brass bands and depth of rehearsal- Hot 8 Brass Band; Soul Rebels Brass Band.
