A Description of episode 132 of Outside The Studio with Tessa: This month on Outside the Studio, we welcome David Benedicktus RN/BSN (retired). David has a 40-year career as a mental health professional working in a variety of mental health settings and focusing on system integration, and patient education projects. In retirement he became a founding member of Complementary Medicine Practitioners of PNW. He organized wellness health promotion talks for the City of Vancouver WA, the local library system and patient support groups. He also became an instructor at Clark College in Vancouver, Washington, for ten years lecturing on the neuroscience of trauma and the relationship between trauma and adaptive lifestyle choices which can lead to chronic disease and addictions. He teaches courses on the Neuroscience of Healing and Resiliency, Preventing Cognitive Decline as You Age, Cannabis and Your Health and Psychedelic Assisted Therapy. Leaning on David's life experience and subject matter expertise, today's conversation explores the theme of inequality and the divide between the haves and the have-nots. It begins with Tessa sharing her childhood realization of the difference between those who have safety and those who are in danger due to war, poverty, and mental health issues. Her father, David Benedicktus, discusses his involvement in the civil rights movement and his work with marginalized communities, particularly the homeless. They discuss the importance of empathy and taking action to address social issues. The conversation also touches on the impact of poverty, and the role of neuroscience in understanding human behavior. Key Takeaways:1.The divide between the haves and the have-nots is a significant issue that affects society. Empathy and understanding are crucial in addressing social issues and helping marginalized communities.2. Poverty and homelessness are complex problems that require structural support and resources. Neuroscience can help us understand the factors that contribute to human behavior and the need for compassion. Cultivating compassion and empathy is essential for addressing the challenges faced by marginalized communities.3. Trauma plays a significant role in shaping individuals and communities, and trauma-informed approaches are crucial for providing effective support. Providing resources such as mental health services and affordable housing can make a significant difference in the lives of those in need. Introducing the Decision-Making Studio Podcast If you're a regular listener to the show, you'll know that it's all about the risks of human decision-making. I try to bring you guests who can help us to better understand them and what we can do to mitigate them. One of those guests is Ben Cattaneo, the host of his own podcast, which was one of the inspirations for this show.  Ben's show used to be called The All Things Risk podcast, but he recently rebranded it to The Decision-Making Studio podcast. To mark this he launched what he calls an ‘inbetweenisode' — a short explainer show — on his channel.  It's done with his trademark honesty, insightfulness and a touch of humour.   If you're listening to this show, then chances are you'll find Ben's show interesting.  So, I thought I'd let Ben take over this channel to share why he's changing the show's name and breaking up with risk. You'll find the show on all the usual podcast platforms. Further information and links: https://thedecisionmaking.studio/podcast To hear Ben's previous appearances on this show: Ben on Decision-making (April 2024): https://www.humanriskpodcast.com/ben-cattaneo-on-decision-making-part-two/ Ben on All Things Risk (March 2020): https://www.humanriskpodcast.com/ben-cattaneo-on-all-things/A cross-cast of this show and the All Things Risk podcast (April 2020): https://www.humanriskpodcast.com/all-things-human-risk-crosscast/

A Description of episode 129 of Outside The Studio with Tessa: This month on Outside the Studio, Tessa and Kelly discuss the practice of yoga nidra and its benefits. They explore different types of yoga nidra and how it can be used for cognition, healing, transformation, and setting intentions (sankalpa). They also address the question of whether it's okay to use yoga nidra to fall asleep and how to handle snoring during a yoga nidra practice. Kelly shares about her two books, 'Meditation for the Modern Family' and 'You Are Not Your Thoughts,' which provide guided meditation practices for different ages and focus on anxiety. Kelly shares her perspective on the importance of humor and self-acceptance in difficult times, and how yoga nidra has been a nourishing practice for her. Key Takeaways:1. Balancing motherhood, work, and self-care can be challenging, and it's important to prioritize self-care and set boundaries.2. Teachers often teach what they need to learn themselves, and it's okay to have struggles and imperfections. Practice, whether it's yoga or meditation, helps us acquire tools to navigate real-life challenges.3. Yoga nidra is an accessible entry into building a meditation practice because it can be done lying down and focuses on relaxation and comfort. A Description of episode 128 of Outside The Studio with Tessa: In this conversation, our favorite repeat guest Jill Rose is back on Outside the Studio to discuss the challenges of technology and the lack of human connection in the digital age. We explore the fear of change and the pressure to strive and achieve in society. Jill shares her insights as a life coach, emphasizing the importance of listening to our inner voice and taking small, gentle steps towards change. We also touch on Tessa's recent surgery and the lessons she learned about self-care and the need for support. Women's health, particularly menopause and reproductive health, is underrepresented and not taken seriously. The conversation around these topics needs to be more open and normalized. Painful periods and PMS symptoms are not normal and should be addressed. There is a lack of research and funding for women's healthcare, especially menopause. Hormone replacement therapy can help with menopausal symptoms but may come with side effects. Embracing the aging process and loving oneself throughout the journey is important. Key Takeaways:1. The fear of change and the pressure to achieve can hold us back from making necessary changes in our lives.2. Listening to our inner voice and taking small, gentle steps can lead us in the right direction.3. Embracing the aging process and loving oneself throughout the journey is important.
